Chapter 25

Inside Huey's mind, two beings were fighting. The Duke and Huey. A barrier of metal bars separated them. Black, jagged rocks surrounded the entire plain and there was the soft crash of waves from somewhere.

Duke glared at his counterpart. Huey gripped the bars in his hands. "What's happening out there?"

Duke shrugged. "Black Heron is taking us to her lab for torture or whatever." Lately, the Duke had been coming out a lot more than Huey did. It was like he was trapped in his own mind now.

"What happened to Katie! You just left her there! What if she's not alright? She looked really hurt," Huey said.

Duke stared at the ground, a scowl on his face. "Why should we care? I bet it was all a charade from the beginning."

"Please. Let me out. We can't just sit by while everything falls apart around us!" Huey's beak quivered.

Duke scoffed. "Why not? There's nothing worth living for anyways."

Huey watched his counterpart with sad eyes. "Dewey wouldn't have gone down so quickly. Louie would've already found a way out of here. We have to escape for them."

"Well, they're gone!" Duke shouted angrily, his fists clenched. "And it's all FOWL's fault!" He began to growl a bit, like a rabid animal. Huey took a step back, just in case these bars weren't enough to protect him.

"Look, I know we've had our differences, but if we work together we could get out of here and stop FOWL." Huey fidgeted with his hands, slightly afraid of how his alter would react.

"Oh yeah? Us and what army? I thought you were supposed to be the smart one." Duke put his hands on his hips and paced.

Huey glanced down and sighed. "Well, what are you going to do?"

Duke crossed his arms, his ragged feathers falling over his face. "I don't know. Black Heron said she would torture us. Hopefully, that'll end it."

Huey's eyes widened. "You're insane! Don't you want to fight for something!"

"I don't know. Maybe. It would be fun to rip all those agents to shreds." For a moment, the Duke actually considered that option.

"Kill everyone, that's a brilliant idea," Huey said sarcastically. He sat down on a rock and leaned his head on his hand. "Then, once we're out of FOWL, we can go to prison."

"Well, do you want me to fight or not!" Duke glared at his alter, teeth bared. He paced across the bars, running a claw against it.

"Just... don't give up. I know you're rage and everything, but use that for good." Huey gave a sad smile, trying to convince the beast on the other side of the bars.

Duke scoffed. "You've forgotten who you're talking to. I'm anything but good."

...

Back on the outside world, Black Heron led Huey to her laboratory. The walls were a pearly white, a much brighter color than his cell had been. He winced, trying to adjust to the light. A weird smell hung in the air from all the chemicals from her experiments. The soft hum of computers filled his ears. In the center of the room was a table, covered with work-in-progress experiments.

She picked up a vile with blue liquid. "So, who wants to play 'guess what Black Heron will do to me'?" she said, smirking.

Huey avoided eye contact and crossed his arms.

She shook the vile in her hand, watching the liquid. "No one? Well, someone has attitude. It's not like you're family is dead or something. Oh wait."

Huey glared at her and one of his eyes twitched.

I'm going to kill her right now.

QUIT TRYING TO KILL PEOPLE!

Huey let out a heavy sigh, trying to control his anger.

"Well, since those two girls ran off, I'll have to find someone else to be my lab rat." She smirked. Black Heron truly was mad at times.

"What do you mean 'two girls?'" he finally spoke up. Was there a chance that some of his friends were alive?

"Just that pink girl and red headed brat. They got away with Katie, and somehow she wasn't punished for that... but I digress! Back to my experiment." She turned to him, giving him a smile that sent shivers down his spine.

Oh my gosh! Katie helped Gos and Webby! We shouldn't have left her.

Probably a trick.

But-

Shut up!

Black Heron stood up to her full height, making Huey feel small and insecure. "Now, rumor has it, you know where Finch's journal is."

Huey flinched.

"So, it is true? Mind telling me where?"

"Yeah, like I'm going to tell you." He glared at her.

She shrugged. "This works out for me better anyways because now I get to test this." She held up the vile for him to see. "Have you ever heard of truth serum?"

Huey took a step back, eyes wide. "Don't. You. Dare. That's an invasion of personal space!"

She gave a chuckle. "Relax, this isn't that. At least, not exactly." She gave a sly look. "Now, open up."

Huey shook his head violently and held his beak shut. But to his surprise, it opened without his consent. He looked to see her with a remote in hand, her thumb on the button.

"Those braces are pretty neat, huh?" said Black Heron. She slowly crept towards him. "Just like  Steel Beak. And if you're wondering how I'm able to control them, I put the magnets on them while you slept." Once she had poured the liquid down his throat, she pressed the button again, releasing his mouth.

He shook himself, coughing on the liquid. "What is wrong with you?!" He narrowed his eyes at her, his Duke side started to show.

She ignored him and took a step back. "Okay, let's start with an easy question. How are you, emotionally?" She leaned her robotic arm against the table, watching eagerly for his reaction.

"I'm fine." he said through gritted teeth. He went on, his tone rising as he spoke. "Sure, you murdered my family, locked me in a dark room, and forced some weird concoction down my throat! But I'm FINE! THANKS FOR ASKING!" He threw his hands in the air, eyes wide with frustration and stress.

Then, once he was done, in a split second, he felt a tingling in his spine and fell... upward. He landed on the ceiling on his back. "Ow! What the heck?" He rubbed his head, discombobulated from now being upside.

Black Heron grinned. "Looks like it doesn't take to sarcasm well."

"What is this?" He asked, getting to his feet. It was like being a bat, but the blood didn't rush to his head or anything.

"We found some magic rune stones at the bin, so I thought why not use that?" She walked up to him, their foreheads almost touching. "Everytime you lie, your center of gravity will be thrown off in a different direction. Only when you tell the truth will it return back to normal." She tapped the tip of his beak, making him take a step back.

He crossed his arms. "Okay, this isn't exactly enjoyable, but it's not torture." he said.

She let out a laugh. "Not yet." She walked over to a lever by the table. She yanked on it, making the room transform. Each wall had a different obstacle. The first wall stretched out entirely, expanding the room. The second wall had spikes covering it. The third wall had an array of weapons from axes to small kitchen knives. And the final wall had tar slathered on it. Small notches appeared in the ceiling he was standing on.

Huey's eyes widened. "What!"

"Now, I wouldn't want to fall onto any of these things. So it's better to tell the truth."

"What are the notches for?" he asked.

"So that, in case you do fall and decide you want a second chance, you can hang on and try again to answer truthfully. Also, it would be funny if your arm got dislocated in the process."

He glared at her. "Gee, thanks."

She began pacing. "So, Huey, where's that journal?"

Huey went silent. Surely it wouldn't be lying if he just didn't answer. But, once again without warning, he began to slide to the wall with the long drop. He caught himself on a notch before he could hurt himself. He gave a small yelp.

"Silence counts as lying, since you're not answering the question." Black Heron waved her finger, smirking.

The duckling gritted his teeth.

...

Huey talked with himself inside his mind. "What are we going to do! She has us cornered!" he panicked, pacing his aside of the bars.

"Why don't we just tell her where the stupid journal is and be done with it!" Duke said, tapping his foot.

Shaking his head, Huey frowned. "We can't! We have a responsibility to keep it safe to Uncle Scrooge!"

"You mean the Uncle Scrooge who's dead? What? You think his dead ghost is going to come haunt us for telling?" Duke remarked, making fun of his alter.

Huey stared down with sad eyes. "Besides that, who knows what FOWL might want the journal for."

"We already know. To collect all the artifacts and what not," Duke said, waving his hand.

Huey tilted his head. "You really think they'd put up this much trouble for random artifacts?"

Duke shrugged. "Or, I could just let us drop now..."

Huey's eyes widened and he reached out and hand through the bars. "No! Don't do that!"

"Well, do you want me to tell them where it is or let us fall?"

"Neither! Those are both horrible ideas!"

Duke mocked Huey for a moment with his hand, grumbling. Then he let his arms sag and sighed. "Ugh! Fine! I'll keep the stupid secret!"

...

"Now, tell me. Where. Is. The journal?" Black Heron drummed her metal fingers on the table, making a clicking sound. She waited.

Huey bit his beak, searching for an answer. "I won't tell you!" His gravity shifted again, sending him in the direction of the tar. He clawed for something to catch himself and gripped onto another ledge. He tucked in his tail to keep it from being burned.

"I hate you." After the words left his mouth, his body rotated, returning back to the normal way of direction. He dangled from the ceiling, and once he realized what had happened, let himself drop to the floor. "Ha! Yes! In your face!"

He tried to make a run for it while his gravity was back to normal, but she stopped him. "Not so fast. As long as that vile is still in effect, you can't go."

"Why not?"

"Huey, why did you run away from your brothers? Your family?"

The boy was taken off guard by the question. "B-because they ignored me." He shot to the side, landing inches from a halbert on the wall. He gulped.

"You can't leave because any question I ask, if you so much as twist the truth, you fall," she remarked.

Huey staggered to his feet, his mouth gaping. "But I told the truth that time!" He fell again, this time to the wall with nothing. He was close enough to it that it didn't hurt him badly.

He growled, narrowing his eyes. He stared at the ground, starting to get upset. He wanted to shout, but he couldn't risk falling another direction.

"Ooh, drama!" Black Heron snickered. She walked up to him. "Where is the journal?"

Huey breathed heavily, thinking it all over.

That's it, I'm going to tell her. Just get this over with.

No! You can't!

Well, you're the one lying about how we ended up in this mess in the first place.

I am not! I don't know why we keep falling!

Sure.

Seriously?!

Huey balled his hands into fists. "The journal is..." His voice broke off, wrestling with whether or not to say it. She smiled, eagerly awaiting his answer. His heart rate quickened and he felt like he would cry right then and there. But he refrained.

"The journal is at the mansion," he said. He slid a few feet to land on the real floor. He crossed his arms and made his way to the door. Hopefully he could get out before she hit him with another question.

"Yes, duh, but where in the mansion?" she asked, a frown on her face.

"Somewhere." Technically it wasn't lying.

She grabbed his arm tightly. "Tell me where it is or else."

"Or else what? There's nothing else you can take from me," he snapped. He tried to pull away from her but she held tight.

"Huey, you may think that you've already hit rock bottom, but trust me, it could be so much worse. So tell me where the journal is or suffer the consequences." Her voice was creepily low, and she spoke in a neat whisper.

"I think I'll take my chances," he said.

Her robot arm's grip got tighter and he was sure he would have a bruise afterwards. "That's it, you little brat, I'm sure I can find someone to get you to talk." She started to drag him out of the room, but her dug his feet into the ground.

"No! Let me go!" He tried to pull away from her, only making his arm hurt more.

The two tugged over him, making his arm extremely sore. He shut his eyes tight, trying to get as far away from this woman as possible. "I'll never tell you where that journal is!" he shouted.

"Why? You think your dead family is going to get on you if you do?" She let out a cackle.

That was the thing that broke the camel's backs Huey snapped and spun around. He bit her good arm, sinking in sharp teeth. She reeled back in shock, letting him go.

She jumped back, Huey glaring at her. He had almost gone full Duke, teeth bared and his pupils red with fury.

...

"What are you doing!" Huey shouted at his alter.

Duke glared at him. "I've had enough!" The bars began to slide further onto Huey's side, giving him less and less space.

Another set of bars appeared above Huey and they began closing him in both ways. "Stop it!"

"No! You're too soft!" The Duke growled at Huey, anger in his eyes. His feathers puffed up with rage.

"We can get out of here if you would just let me take the lead!" Huey pleaded, having to step back from the space closing in. "You can't let your rage get in the way of your thinking."

Duke ran at the bars, startling Huey. The duckling fell on his tail end, hands trembling.

"In case you haven't noticed, all I am is pure rage! The world sucks and if we don't stand up to it, it's only going to get worse!" Duke snapped. He bared his claws, like he was just about ready to rip his counterpart to shreds.

"But not like this. This is chaos!" Huey frowned, holding his arms close to his body. "Just stop."

"Maybe you're the one who should stop!" Duke shouted. He began growling and paced the bars like a wild animal. The bars closed in faster. "I'm in control now. And there's nothing you can do about it!" His pupils shrunk like cat eyes and if looks could kill, Huey would've been dead a thousand times over.

And that's when Huey realized there was no use arguing with his counterpart. He wouldn't listen to reason and would do what he wanted. With or without Huey's approval. He gulped, deciding he really was broken. His family had been everything to him, and now that they were gone, there was nothing in the world that could make him happy.

The rage had taken over.

...

Huey lunged at Black Heron, but she ducked behind the table. He rammed into the wall with nothing on it, banging his head. Her eyes widened as she realized she had gone to far. She spoke into a com built into her arms. "Send security to my lab immediately," she said, her voice wavering.

Huey shook himself, only stunned for a moment. He turned his gaze back on her. He tried to go at her again, but a pair of strong hands grabbed him out of the air.

Several eggheads pinned him to the ground. He snarled and clawed at the grown, trying to reach her. At this point her was barking like a dog, spit drooling from his mouth. Scratching at the eggheads, he threw unintelligible insults at them.

Black Heron slowly rose from behind the table, jaw gaping. "He's... incredible. I can see now why Bradford wanted him." It was like she saw him as a new toy, a new experiment.

She stepped towards him, heels clipping on the floor. He tried to grab for her, but she stood just out of reach. She knelt to his level. "You are really something Hubert."

"And you're a no-good, horrible, wicked-" An egghead snapped a muzzle over his beak before he could finish his insult.

The large egghead holding him stood up. Huey struggled in his arms, kicking at the air. All his screams were muffled by the muzzle. He went on wrestling for a while, trying to shout.

Once he finally ran out of energy, he stopped fighting. He breathed heavily, eyes still locked on Black Heron. He growled underneath the muzzle. His feathers were  all ruffled, especially all the ones on his head.

"What do you want us to do with the little monster?" another egghead said. There were a total of three eggheads in the room. All together they kind of looked like the wannabe versions of the beagle boys.

Black Heron smirked. "Put him in a cage and leave him in my office. If he wants to act like an animal, he'll be treated like an animal. I want to watch him." She put a hand on her hip, eyeing Huey like a bag of diamonds. He eyed her like his next meal.

"And make sure he's locked up tight. Put at least five locks on the cage."

The eggheads nodded and took Huey away. As they went, only one thing filled Huey's mind. Furious rage. His breathing became shaky and his eyes small and red. This wasn't Huey anymore.

This was the Duke.

Oh yeah! Finished another chapter! I love the Duke so much. I may have a problem. All my favorite characters of shows just end up being the evil versions of good guys. The Gray Knight, Bipper, the Duke of making a mess, Negaduck, etc. And I strongly believe Huey has split personality disorder. This was fun to write.

Thanksa for all your support! I really appreciate all the reviews, follows, and favorites! You guys are so great to me. Good night and take care!
