Chapter 22
Hey! Just realized I couldn't put songs on here! I'm going to go back and put songs in all the song chapters.
Thanks for all your support!
Stepping into the kitchen, Katie quickly found the tray with Huey's food. She walked over to it, taking it from the counter. She looked over the meal, and stuck out her tongue in disgust. A stale roll and some unidentifiable slop in a bowl. Katie held it away from her when the smell reached her. "Oh... Huey..." she said in sympathy for him. She glanced around the kitchen, trying to find something.
Setting the tray back on the counter, she grabbed a stool and pushed it against the fridge. She climbed on top of the stool and looked over the top of the fridge. Her face lit when she found what she wanted. A jar of cookies. She grabbed it and stepped down the stool. Taking off the top, she smiled. After digging around in the jar, ignoring any raisin cookies, she pulled out two chocolate chip cookies.
She held one in her mouth as she put back the jar and the stool. Then she got the tray and put the second cookie on it. She swallowed the first one, leaving chocolate and crumbs all over her face. Taking the roll, she put it on top of the second cookie to hide it. Even Huey deserved something sweet.
Katie took the tray down the halls of FOWL. She soon found the door down to cell 25. She tried to juggle opened the door, holding the tray, and turning her phone flashlight on all at once. Balancing the tray on her beak, she grabbed the door handle. She swung it open a bit and put her foot between the crack. Then she put her hand in her pocket, pulling out her phone. With her foot, she pushed the heavy door open and stepped into the dark hallway. It shut behind her with a loud thud.
She held the tray in one hand now, and with the other hand, she held her phone as a light in the pitch darkness. She shuddered. There was a warm atmosphere to the hall, the sort that made you feel claustrophobic. She frowned, worried that the heat would melt the chocolate. She moved a little quicker, the pat of her feet hitting the floor as the only noise.
Finding herself at the cell door, Katie took in a deep breath. It had been a while since she had seen Huey. And if she was right in working for FOWL, wouldn't that make him an enemy? He must have done something to end him up in here. Her mouth was open as she thought over everything.
She shook herself of her fears and uneasiness and looked to the door. Her grandfather hadn't given her exact instructions and she hadn't ever been down here before. She looked over the handle, trying to figure out how to open it. It seemed like there were two openings. One handle opened the entire door, and the other handle opened a small slit, just big enough for the tray. The two handles were right next to each other, making it hard to tell which was which.
Katie's hand hovered over one handle. "I think it's this one," she said to herself. Hearing the sound of her own voice comforted her somehow. It made her feel less alone in the dark.
She took hold of the handle, but realized she had forgotten to unlock it. She dug around her pockets for her FOWL keycard, which had limited access due to her being and agent in training. But her grandfather, for the time being, had given her access to unlock this door. She swiped it over the scanner and tried again.
To her surprise, the whole door opened. Her heart raced and she dropped the tray, making a loud clang. Her breathing was uneasy as she realized her mistake. A moment's hesitation.
A figure jumped out at her, pinning her against the wall. In the process she dropped her phone, letting the light reveal the figure. "Huey!" she smiled.
He glared at her, pressing his forearm against her neck. "Don't 'Huey' me, Katie," he snapped.
Katie looked him over, heart pounded. She didn't know whether to be happy to see him or scared that he was so threatening all of a sudden. His head feathers were ruffled and messy and dark bags hung under his eyes. He looked strange without his cap to Katie. His palms and joints were gray, probably from sleeping on the dirty floor. He had a few bruises and he was thin and looked unwell.
In his hand he held something he had grabbed from the tray. He held it up to her face. "Don't make me use this... this... Is this a cookie?" he asked, taking a better look at what he had.
Katie nodded. He sighed irritated and threw it away. Then he released her, taking a step back. She rubbed her neck, then looked at him.
He shot her a hard look. Then he spun around, grabbing her phone, and walked down the hall. Katie called after him. "Wait! What are you doing?"
"Escaping this stupid place," he said without looking back.
Katie ran up to him. "No, no, no, you can't! Grandpa will kill me!" she said.
He kept on walking. "There's not a chance I'm staying in this nightmare," he said. Katie noticed his voice crack.
Katie had to think of something fast, or else her whole career as a spy would be ruined before it even began.
Song (To the tune of Burn the Ships by For King and Country)
Katie:
How did we get here?
A castaway on a lonely shore
I can see in your eyes, dear
It's hard to take for a moment more
Huey stopped. Then he took in a breath, clenching his fists. He kept walking.
Katie:
We've got to
Huey:
Burn the ships
cut the ties
Send a flare into the night
Say a prayer
turn the tide
Dry your tears and wave goodbye
Katie ran ahead of him and grabbed his hand. He stated at her for a moment, and for the first time, Katie realized he was crying. She smiled sadly at him.
Katie:
Step into a new day
We can rise up from the dust and walk away
We can dance upon our heartache
Huey pulled away from her, his stern expression returning. His gaze at her was so filled with hate and anger; sadness and regret.
Huey:
Light a match
leave the past
burn the ships
And don't you look back
Katie stood in front of him. He tried to go around her, but she wouldn't allow it. Finally, he resolved to pushed through her, but she stood her ground. But he was stronger than her, and pushed her to the ground. She got herself back up, dusting off.
"If you were any kind of friend, you wouldn't want to keep me in a place like this. It's literally torture, and you're fine with it," he said with a huff.
She took a step back. "Huey, I am your friend," she said. She tried to put a hand on his shoulder but her pulled away.
"No, you're not. You killed anyone I had left."
Katie:
Don't let it arrest you
This fear
This fear of fallin' again
And if you need a refuge
I will be right here until the end
Oh, it's time to
Huey:
Burn the ships
cut the ties
Send a flare into the night
Say a prayer
turn the tide
Dry your tears and wave goodbye
Huey bit his beak, tears now rolling down his beak. He sank onto the floor, pain in his eyes. Katie watched, wondering what to do.
Huey:
There will never be a new day
I can't rise up from the dust and walk away
All it ever is is heartache, oh
So light a match
leave the past
burn the ships
And don't you look back
Katie helped Huey to his feet and wiped his tears with her hand. "Huey, I..." She searched for words. He pushed her back and went on.
"Save it," he snapped.
Katie:
So long to shame
walk through the sorrow
Out of the fire into tomorrow
Forgive the hurt
face the fear
Feel the wave disappear
We're comin' clean
We're born again
And soon your lungs can breathe again
Oh, we can breathe again
Step into a new day
We can rise up from the dust and walk away
We can dance and lose our heartache, yeah
Huey:
light a match
leave the past
burn the ships
And never look back
And never look back
And never look back
END SONG
Huey was a few feet from the door, and Katie couldn't afford to let him go. She bit her beak, considering using a last resort.
"Huey, get back here, or else!" Katie said, stomping her foot.
"Or what, you'll attack me with your cookie?"
Katie jumped in front of him and kicked him in the stomach. Huey doubled over, wincing. He quickly got back up and swung his fist for her. She ducked out of the way, letting him fall over himself. He wiped his jaw and tried again. She kept avoiding his hits till finally he leaned against the wall catching his breath.
The lack of food combined with his irritation was tiring him out. Katie smirked, her plan working. Not only was she tiring him out, but she was moving him from the exit too. Huey noticed this as well and his face turned red with anger.
"Katie, just let me go, unless you want to meet the Duke," he said, taking in heavy breaths. She stood firm and shook her head. Huey jumped on her and the two rolled back an forth on the floor. Katie was defending herself while Huey clawed at her, trying to land something.
...
Steel Beak grumbled to himself, sitting in the monitoring room. He was reclined in a black office chair, wearing his white suit. The room had a red hue to it and in front of him were several screen monitors and equipment. Sitting at the equipment were the two eggheads that had been hit with Black Heron's dumb ray. One chewed on a rubics cube, getting saliva everywhere, while the other spun aimlessly in his chair, pressing buttons, switching the monitor images.
Steel Beak sighed and put his hand on his forehead. "Monitoring the world isn't even a real job! No one ever does something out of ordinary anyways," he thought aloud. "Not only did Bradford give me this pointless job, but I'm stuck with you two idiots," he said, gesturing at the eggheads.
Different screens held different scenes, each one surveying a specific person. FOWL was keen on keeping an eye on any possible threats or allies. People among the monitors included Glomgold, Magica, Djinn, Storkules and Selene, Penumbra, Ma Beagle, etc. Darkwing and Gizmo Duck also used to be on there, but they had been captured earlier. Steel Beak didn't really know what they had done with the heroes, but he hoped it was something terrible.
Steel Beak rolled a toothpick in his beak, wishing he didn't have this stupid job. His eyes wandered to the egghead who was randomly pushing buttons on the radio. The rooster rolled his eyes, thinking they should upgrade to something better than a radio interceptor. It wasn't like anybody actually used those things anymore anyway. Not to mention that their radio in interceptor could only intercept after the conversation was over. By then it would clearly be to late to stop anything.
There wasn't much over the interceptor. Just muffled static mostly. After the egghead flipped to a channel though, there was a spit second that actually sounded like people. Steel Beak jumped up. "Wait, go back!" he said. The egghead just looked at him.
"Uhhhhh..." he said.
Steel Beak rolled his eyes and took the interceptor. He flipped the switch a few times before finding the channel. People were talking, and Steel Beak was certain he had heard those voices before. It clicked in his brain. The McDucks!
