Katie stepped into her grandfather's office. "You said you wanted to see me?" she said, stepping up to his desk. She rubbed her hands nervously. She still couldn't make up her mind on the whole "who to trust" thing. She sat down at the chair across from Bradford. She readjusted herself a few times, then looked up at him.
"Katie, dear, why are you acting so nervous around me?" Bradford asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Me? Nervous? I'm not nervous. Why would I be? I'm back home safe with you. I'm doing the right thing," she said, more to herself than to him.
"You are. Those McDuck's didn't care for you. They only wanted to use you," he said.
She nodded to herself. "So, what did you want to tell me anyway?" she said, shaking herself of her thoughts. She leaned up against the dark wooden desk and fiddled her thumbs.
"Oh nothing... except a mission for you," he said smirking.
The moment it clicked in Katie's head what he had said, she nearly jumped out of her seat. "Really? For reals? Are you being real right now!" she said. She jumped to her feet and did an excited twirl. Then she leaned in close to him from across the desk.
Bradford chuckled and nodded. "Really."
"Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh!" the robin squealed. She couldn't keep from jumping up and down. Bradford stared at her. When she caught his gaze, she stopped jumping. Patting down her dress, she cleared her throat. "I mean... yeah that's great news," she said in a more tame manner.
Bradford let a smile cross his face and ruffled her hair. "Oh Katie, I really did miss you," he said warmly.
She hugged him tight. "Thank you so much grandpa!" she said, then almost ran out the door.
"Wait, you don't even know what it is yet," Bradford said.
She stopped and spun around blushing. "Oh right. My mission is?" she said. Her excitement toned down a bit. She had to look like she knew what she was doing. This was her chance to prove she could handle it. Taking in a deep breath, she calmed herself and stood up straight. "What is my mission?"
"Your mission is to get Isabella Finch's journal," he said.
He pressed a button on his remote and the monitor behind him lit up. For a moment while it loaded, it displayed the FOWL logo. A globe being scooped up by a vulture talon. The lights dimmed to easier display the screen. The whole room had a red hue to it. Katie looked around when the lights changed. She bit her beak from getting too excited again.
Finally, the image showed the journal in question. (I couldn't find a picture of the journal and I couldn't remember what it looked like, so I made my own description). The book was leather. The front and back cover were tan while the binding was deep reddish brown. A calligraphy I was marked with ink over another letter, F.
Katie studied it in her mind so she'd know what it looked like. "So, where do I find this book?" she said.
Bradford raised an eyebrow. "The Ducks didn't tell you?" he said.
Katie shook her head. "I don't even think they know where it is," she said, trying to recall if they had told her.
Bradford clenched his fist. "Well then, I'm sorry Katie, but if that's the case, I don't have a mission for you."
Katie slumped. Disappointment was written all over her face. She exchanged her look for a determined one and ran up to her grandfather. "Oh, please grandpa, you have to give a mission! I'll take any job! Just give me something to do!" she said, putting on the best puppy dog eyes she could. She got down on her knees and looked up at him with pleading eyes. "Pleeeeeeeese?"
Bradford thought it over. "Well..." he said, still thinking.
"I will take literally a. Ny. Thin. G."
Bradford tweaked his beak. "I have something, but I'm not sure if you're up to the task. Especially after hanging out with those McDuck kids," he said.
Katie got to her feet. "I can take it. I know what side I'm on. Let me prove my loyalty to you, grandpa! Blood is thicker than water! I won't kill you in the middle of the night because you have vulture eyes!"
Bradford gave her a strange look after that last one.
Katie's cheeks turned red. "Sorry, Edgar Allan Poe," she explained.
After a moment of awkward silence, Bradford finally told her the task. "Anyways, I was going to say you could take food to Huey," he said.
Katie stiffened. "In cell 25?" she asked.
He nodded. "But I could just get someone else to do it," Bradford said.
Katie shook her head. "No, please let me do it. It'll be nice to see Huey again," she said. She looked down at her feet and rocked on her heals.
Bradford gave her a stern look. "Huey can not be trusted as much as those other kids. He's just like the rest of them Katie. Also, I thought cell 25 gave you the creeps?" he said. He smiled teasingly, trying to lighten the mood.
"N-not anymore, I don't think. It's just like the basement. I was scared of it when I was younger, but not anymore," she said.
"You can go get one of those trays from the kitchen. When you go down to him, ask him if he knows anything about the journal," Bradford said.
Katie nodded. "What's so special about this journal anyways?" she wondered.
"That's a story for another time. Now go," he said, turning back to his work. Katie just shrugged and went to the kitchen.
...
Gandra led Gyro through the halls of FOWL. "Okay, I think they're this way," she said, tapping her foot. They stood at a corner while Gandra tried to remember where they were keeping Gizmo Duck and Darkwing.
"You don't even know where we're going," Gyro grumbled.
Gandra shot him a look. "Oh hush it! I'll find them. Just give me a sec."
Gyro rolled his eyes and leaned against the wall. Navigating the hallways was like a finding a way through a maze. They felt like they were going in circles. Their feet made a patting noise as they walked. The faster they walked, the faster the patting, which just made them tense for some reason and walk faster. Each moment felt like a ticking time bomb, even though they both knew it was all in their heads. And the fact that most the halls were empty only added to the tension.
Gandra bit her beak and kept walking. "Maybe they took them this way," she said.
"Yeah, twentieth time's a charm," Gyro mumbled. Gandra ignored him and kept going.
Finally, Gyro got fed up with the aimless walking. "Oh, just let me lead," he said, crossing his arms and stepping in front of her when she stopped.
"Wait, Gyro!" she called.
"Ah, don't try to tell me you know the way. You obviously don't!" he said. She frowned and followed him.
"Fine, but I won't help you when you get yourself killed," she said.
"Like that's going to happen," he said. Gyro stepped around a corner and came face to face with a gun. He jumped back with a yelp. The carpet made him slip, landing on his tail feathers.
"What have we got here?" an egghead snickered. He stood with his hand on his hip and his weapon aimed at the chicken. Gandra glared at Gyro and stood next to him. The egghead gestured with his weapon at the two. "Miss Dee, you're not helping the enemy, are you?" he said, looking her up and down.
She rolled her eyes. "Oh shut up. I'm taking this guy as prisoner. You really think I'd help the Ducks?" she said.
"Well, rumors have been spreading that you like that Gizmo dork," the egghead said.
"Let me guess, Black Heron told you that?" she said. "That woman is always trying to get under my skin. You can't believe a word she says. Just get back to whatever you were doing, while I take this chicken down to the cells."
The egghead was still skeptical. "Well, if that's the case, why don't I just call director Bradford and ask him about it," he said, reaching for his phone.
Gandra's eyes widened. "No! That's not necessary. I'll do it, after I get him locked up."
"Oh no, but I insist."
"I can do it myself."
Gyro looked between the two, keeping silent.
"If he's your prisoner, then why isn't he cuffed up or something?" the egghead pressed on. Gandra bit her beak. She hadn't thought of that.
The egghead moved the gun to face Gandra. "You're a traitor!" he barked. "I'm telling Bradford." He pulled out his phone and was halfway through dialing when Gandra stopped him.
"Wait. If you tell Bradford, I'll..." She searched for something to say. "I'll tell Steel Beak you steal his good suits!" she said.
The egghead was taken back. He glared at her a moment, then stepped aside. "I didn't see anything. And neither did you," he said, then he turned and walked off.
Gyro got to his feet and dusted himself off. He straightened his hat. He gave Gandra a questioning look.
"What? Blackmail is a good thing to have in the spy game," she said. Then she waved him to follow. "In fact, that gives me an idea." She picked up her speed to a swift walk.
Gyro tripped over his feet trying to keep up with her. "What do you mean?" he wondered, following closely behind.
"Well, I think I might know where Gizmo Duck is," she said with a smirk.
Finally, they came to a door. It was a vacuumed shut door with a big sign on it. The sign read, STAY OUT. There was a keypad on the door. Gandra typed in the password, 1991.
"What is this?" Gyro asked as she pushed open the door.
"This is Steel Beak's private wine cellar. But the eggheads sneak in here all the time. If he ever knew, he would go nuts. So I use it as blackmail against them. But honestly, I think they're games are stupid, the disgusting pigs. They figured out his password, and now they come in here and get drunk. No girls allowed," she said. She rolled her eyes at that last part.
Gyro and Gandra crept down the wooden stairs. They tried their best to keep the boards from creaking. It was cold to keep the wine fresh and it made a chill go down Gandra's spine. The lighting was dim and it flickered on and off a few times. There was the soft buzzing from the old lights. Gandra and Gyro hid behind a barrel of wine, watching from afar.
There was Gizmo Duck and Darkwing, talking with the eggheads. The eggheads crowded around them and started chanting. "Fight! Fight! Fight!"
Gandra made a face of disgust. These games were pointless and stupid. She might even steal a drink to get rid of this from her mind. She thought the eggheads low compared to her. She scoffed at them.
"Well," someone said behind them with a chuckle.
Gyro and Gandra spun around to see who had spoken. Gandra gasped from surprise and Gyro's eyes widened. A husky stood up straight with his hands behind his back. Gandra mentally scolded herself for not being more careful.
"Gandra Dee and my old intern," the husky said, grinning slyly.
Gyro narrowed his eyes. "Akita."
Akita stepped closer to them. "You know, when I saw the boys bring that Gizmo suit in here, I knew you were soon to follow. You were always sentimental in saving your sorry excuses for inventions," he said. He ran his tongue over his sharp canine teeth.
"Sorry excuse?! I'll have you know-"
"Gyro, you're still that idiotic kid from all those years ago," Akita said, shaking his head.
Gandra readied herself for a fight. She slipped off her glove, preparing to electrocute him.
"By the way, how is 2BO?" Akita said. Gyro glared a him, clenching his fists.
"It's Boyd. And it's none of your business," Gyro said, crossing his arms.
"Hmm..." Akita thought. "I'm glad you're here. Then I can share my latest project with you. Or should I say my oldest..." he said smirking.
Gandra and Gyro shared a look. "What are you talking about?"
