Chapter 18

Hey guys! Don't know what happened with last chapter's formatting. I'll fix it when I feel like. (Fixed it!) Also, this chapter has some Della and Louie angst just because so deal with it! Lol, I don't care that much for Louie and Della angst, but it made one of my FFN readers happy so I threw it in there. Enjoy!

The two super heroes stared each other down. "Ugh, what are you doing here?" Darkwing questioned, raising an eyebrow.

"I'm investigating suspicious activity in the area," Gizmo Duck said, putting his hands on his hips.

"No, that's why I'm doing. Your assistance is not needed," Darkwing said, trying to shoo Gizmo Duck away. He tried to push him over.
"Wait, hang on, I can help. We can work together like a buddy cop movie," Gizmo Duck said, trying to fight off Darkwing's shove.
"What? No. Darkwing works alone," he said.
Gizmo Duck raised an eyebrow. "Don't you have a sidekick?"

"Had a sidekick," Darkwing corrected, a hint of sadness in his voice.

"Look, I'm just here for a scout mission, seeing if this actually is FOWL's hideout, and then they're going to wish they never kidnapped those kids," Darkwing said.

Gizmo Duck smiled. "Hey! I'm working on that same case! Like I said, we could team up," he pressed.

Darkwing rolled his eyes. "No, no, no, no, no, and again, no!" he shouted. Then he turned back to Funzo's. How was he going to get in there? He frowned and snapped his fingers. "Darn it, I wish I had powers," he said under his breath. "Fine, I will allow you to help me," Darkwing sighed.

Gizmo Duck crossed his arms. "No, we're equals," he said. Then he stuck out his hand. "Partners?"

After a moment's hesitation, Darkwing gave in. "Alright, alright." he whined, shaking the hero's hand.

Darkwing and Gizmo Duck discussed their plan outside of Funzo's. "Alright, we sneak in, then you'll use your high tech visor or whatever to look for any secret passages. Then if there are any, we'll sneak in, take a look around the place, and sneak out. Any questions?" Darkwing said.

Gizmo Duck thought a minute. "How do we sneak in? They won't let you in without a kid, and it'd look a little odd for two super heroes to just walk in," he said.

"That's why I said sneak," Darkwing said.
He pulled out his grapple gun and shot onto the roof of the facility. He slowly climbed up, while Gizmo Duck used his helicopter helmet to get up. Once they had reached the roof, Darkwing inspected it for any way to enter.

"Over here is an air vent that leads to the employees only room," Gizmo Duck pointed.
"Wow, you can see all that with your visor?" Darkwing questioned.

"It's x-ray vision. And I can see more than that, Drake," Gizmo Duck responded.

Darkwing flinched at the sound of his own name. "Just don't tell anyone, or else," he glared. "Don't you have to tell me your secret identity if you know mine?" he added, tapping his foot. Gizmo Duck ignored him.

"Let's work on getting inside," he said.
Darkwing rolled his eyes and followed the other hero. After lasering open the vent, the two heroes climbed in. It was surprisingly large and strong enough to hold the weight of the Gizmo suit. They soon found themselves in the employees only room. Darkwing climbed out of the vent first, followed by Gizmo Duck.

"Well, what do you see?" Darkwing asked.
Gizmo Duck looked around, then frowned. "Something's messing with the suit and it won't work properly," he explained.

Darkwing glanced around the room. "I guess we'll just have to find it ourselves," he whispered, trying not to draw attention from anyone outside the room.

Darkwing looked through the drawers on the desk while Gizmo Duck examined the bookshelf. "There's nothing here," Darkwing whined.

"There has to be. If I was a fellan, why-" Gizmo Duck started.

He was cut off by his suit's computer voice. "Activating lemon pie." The suit smashed a pie into Gizmo Duck's face.

"What the heck?" he questioned.

"Who would you like to write a check to?" the computer asked.

Gizmo Duck frowned. "I thought we fixed all the glitches!" he whisper shouted.

"Hmm... that is not in your contacts," the suit went on.

Gizmo Duck rolled his eyes. This thing was as annoying as Siri.

Darkwing raised an eyebrow. "Maybe there's something in the area making you suit go haywire. All the more reason to believe this is FOWL's headquarters," he said.

"Now playing Scottish rap by Mark Beaks," the suit said. Then it started playing ridiculously loud music. The two heros freaked.

"Turn that off!" Darkwing said.

"I can't! It won't listen to me!" Gizmo Duck said.

Darkwing covered his ears from the terrible music. "Why would it play this of all songs!" he complained.

Suddenly, the lights in the room went red and a large cage fell from the ceiling, trapping both heroes. Several eggheads came into the room with guns. Darkwing face palmed. "This is why I work alone."

...

Katie was reclined on Huey's bed. The house was quiet. She hadn't spoken to Gosalyn since when she got mad at her. Katie let out a depressed sigh. She was trying so hard to prove that she was only trying to help, but they wouldn't listen. Thoughts of what her grandfather said filled her mind. Maybe she should go back. There they actually treated her well. They didn't try to tie her up. They didn't accuse her of being a spy. They let her help. Katie shook her head. No, she couldn't go back. She was on the good side. Right?

Her phone buzzed. She glanced at it, seeing it was a text from her grandfather. He had tried to call her multiple times and she had been ghosting him all day. She frowned at the text, too upset to read it. Swiping the screen, her finger hovered over the "Block Contact" button. But for some reason she couldn't bring herself to push it.

"What are you doing Katie?" she said to herself under her breath.

"Just make up your mind! Tell him no!" she debated with herself. Why couldn't she press the button. Biting her beak, curiosity moved her to read the text.

They'll never accept you

Katie frowned. She knew he was right. But she didn't want to admit it.

Leave me alone.

She pressed the send button. A few moments later, he replied.

Quit lying to yourself. Please come home Katie. I miss you.

Katie tried to decide whether to trust him or not. She grinded her teeth, upset she couldn't make up her mind.

"Why is this so hard!" she cried, holding her head in her hands.

...

Webby and Violet stepped into the mansion. "We're back!" Webby called, closing the door behind them.

Gosalyn ran up to them. "Guys! There's something important I have to tell you!" she exclaimed.

"Nice to see you too," Violet said.

"Where's my dad?" Gosalyn wondered.

"He went to go check something out, but he'll be back," Webby said.

Gosalyn shrugged. "Eh, it doesn't matter. Anyways, something happened while you were gone!" she pressed on.

"What?" Webby wondered.

"I found proof that Katie really is in cahoots with FOWL," Gosalyn said.

Webby was skeptical. "How?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Well, someone was in the house talking to her," Gosalyn said. Webby nodded, following her story. "And I think they were talking about Huey. He's somewhere called cell 25. And the other guy was all like, 'Katie come back to me', and he sounded real old. I'm sure it has something to do with FOWL. And then I saw him leave," Gosalyn explained.

"Sounds like a FOWL agent to me," Violet agreed.

Webby shook her head and hands, thinking they were being ridiculous. "So, what you're telling me is, a man broke into the house, had some secret discussion with Katie, which actually sounds like maybe she's not working for FOWL and they want her back, then broke out of the house and ran off?" she speculated.
Gosalyn thought to herself. "Well, when you put it that way..." she cringed.

"And you never once thought to call us about someone in the house?" Webby questioned.
"No, I did not," Gosalyn replied.
Webby face palmed.

Gosalyn still wanted to protect her case. "But she is a spy! I'm telling you!" she cried.
"Why don't we ask Katie if she's a spy? That'll put an end to it," Webby suggested.

Gosalyn put her hands on her hips. "Well, of course she's going to say she's not!" she said .
Violet spoke up. "Though I do agree with you that she's working for FOWL, I do think it would be wise to confront her about it," she said.

Gosalyn frowned out voted. "Alright. She's up in the boys' room," she said, leading her friends up the stairs.

They hesitated before walking in. "Hey! Kate-ster!" Gosalyn greeted with an awkward smile.
Katie climbed down from the bunk and raised an eyebrow. "Why did you call me that? What do you want?" she questioned.

Violet stepped forward. "It's nothing personal. We just have a question. We want to know if you're a spy," she said.

"You think I'm a spy? How is that not personal? How many times do I have to tell you! I'm NOT!" Katie shouted annoyed.
Gosalyn crossed her arms. "Then how do you explain that conversation you had with that guy?' she demanded.

Katie looked surprised. "You heard that?" she asked, looking down at her feet.

"You better believe I did!" Gosalyn said. Webby stepped in front of her.

"Gos, chill," she said, trying to calm her.

Violet stepped up. "It's not that we don't trust you... No, wait, it totally is," she said.

"You guys, I'm trying really hard to help! Why won't you just accept that!" Katie let out frustrated.

"Because you're a spy," Gosalyn chimed in a singsong tone.

Webby smacked her in the arm. "Katie, I believe you, but why were you talking to that guy? Who was that?" Webby wondered.

"My grandpa," Katie sighed.

"The LEADER of FOWL," Gosalyn put in.

"Gos, stop talking!" Webby said.

"Just admit it!" Gosalyn said.

Violet nodded.

"You're working for FOWL!" Gosalyn said.
Webby tried to stop them before they started fighting, but it was too late. Gosalyn jumped on Katie and the two were wrestling. Violet was cheered Gosalyn on.

"Violet, what are you doing?" Webby said.
"I'm cheering for the good side, Webigail. Maybe you should too," Violet huffed. Webby was taken back by Violet.

Finally, Katie shoved Gosalyn off of her, tears in her eyes. "Just STOP!" Katie shouted, surprising everyone. She got to her feet breathing heavily.

"I tried to be nice! I bent over backwards trying to help! I betrayed my own FAMILY to prove to you that I'm not evil! But none of you stinking care! You only see what you want to! And you accuse me of being a spy!? Maybe I should! It'd be better than being on your side!" she screamed. Then she stomped out of the room.
Webby winced at the sound of the front door slamming shut.

The girls were quiet until finally Gosalyn spoke up. "Suppose she'll come back?" Gosalyn ventured, rubbing her arm ashamed. Violet stared down at her feet.

"No, I don't think so," Webby said, glaring at the two girls and tapping her foot.

...

"Hey, mom, do you know where Dewey went?" Louie asked, stepping up to Della. She was helping build another boat.

"No, why?" she wondered.

"Well, we kind of got in an argument," Louie said.

"About what? Louie, can you give me a hand?" she said. Louie nodded and helped his mother. This boat was a little different than the last. It was more of a boat than a raft and Della was hammering together the wood with her iron leg. He held the nails she was using they had found among the remains of the sub.
"Well, it was about... Huey," Louie said.

Della raised an eyebrow. She was obviously still hurt and worried about the eldest triplet. "Huey?" she said.

Louie nodded. "Mom... I'm mad at him," he admitted.

"Who? Dewey?"

"No, Huey," Louie spoke.

Della smiled warmly at him and ruffled his feathers. "Louie, it's alright," she said, her voice cracking a bit. Louie raised an eyebrow.
"It is?" he questioned.

Della went on hammering the nails. "Yeah, as long as you don't take it too far," she said.
"What do you mean?"

"Well, like when Donald was mad at Scrooge, and he didn't tell you about me or him. Or when I..." She drifted off in thought.

"Ow!" Louie shouted as Della hammered his finger.

She jumped up. "Oh my gosh, Louie are you okay! It was an accident!" she began to freak out.

Louie shook out his hand. It really hadn't been that big of a deal. "Yeah, I'm fine. Anyways, you were saying?" he questioned.

"Oh right. Well, I was going to say... Louie, I owe you an apology," she said.

Louie was puzzled. "What for?"

"For how I acted during the Timephoon. That was one of those moments when I took it too far," she said.

Louie was taken back. "Mom, I-"

"No, Louie. I'm sorry. I shut down Louie Inc, your dream. I was just under a lot of pressure by Beakly. She was telling me I didn't discipline you guys enough, and it just had me a bit annoyed and-"

"What's this about me?" Beakly interrupted.
Della jumped out of her skin. "Gah! Beakly! Umm... nothing?" she covered.

Beakly just rolled her eyes and walked away.
Louie started laughing. "Scary, isn't she?" he chuckled.

"Well, I wouldn't want to get on her bad side," Della added. The two smiled at each other.
After several attempts to raft off the island, the family was getting restless.

Della kicked up some sand. "We'll never get off this island!" she shouted.

Dewey sat at the edge of the beach, looking out depressed. Louie thought about whether or not he should speak to him. He sighed and finally decided to let him have his space.

"Well, making a boat ain't going to help us, but what else can we do?" Scrooge said.

Everybody thought a minute. "We could make a 'sub' sandwich and ride it back to Duckberg!" Launchpad suggested.

Everyone sent him a look.

"Right, we don't have any mustard," he said disappointed.

"Yes, not enough mustard was the problem with that plan," Beakly said sarcastically.
Donald proposed something. They turned to him.

"What?"

He said it again, but no one could understand him.

"Any idea what he said?" Della asked Louie.
Louie shrugged. "I get like every third word," he said. Donald glared at him.

"If only we had that translator Gyro made," Beakly said.

A lightbulb went off in Louie's head. "That's it! Gyro! We could contact him and he could come get us!" Louie exclaimed.

"That's what I said!" Donald quacked. Then he face palmed.

"Let's try it," Della smiled. Pulling out her phone, she tried to turn it on. She was unsuccessful. "Why won't you work!" she shouted, throwing it down on the sand.
"Well, it could be it's too hot, or it's wet, or the sand, or THE FACT YOU JUST THREW IT!" Scrooge said.

Della blushed, embarrassed.
"Nah, it couldn't be that last one, she tried it before she threw it," Launchpad said.
"Are you kidding me? None of us have water proof phones!?" Louie said, throwing his hands up disappointed.

...

Gizmo Duck frowned. The eggheads had tied up Darkwing and Gizmo Duck and took them down to their base. They shoved them along whenever they walked too slow.

"Alright! I'm going!" Darkwing snapped when an egghead jabbed him in the back.
Gizmo Duck tried to think of a plan. He was certain Darkwing was doing the same think.
They turned down several hallways. The eggheads talked behind them.

"Director Buzzard will be happy to see we got you," one sneered.

Darkwing glared at them. "You'll lose," he said.
Gizmo Duck looked around FOWL's base. Down the hall was a girl with raven colored hair and in a t shirt and jeans. She had a light blue jacket tied around her waist. Gizmo Duck gasped.

"Gandra?" he called.

She looked his direction. "Suit?" she said raising an eyebrow. She ran up to him.

"Gandra! What are you doing here?" he questioned.

Darkwing examined her. "Who's your friend?" he wondered.

"Suit, I- I didn't want you to find out like this," she said, her excitement dissolving into an ashamed expression.

"Gandra? What are you talking about?" Gizmo Duck asked.

"Suit, I... I work for FOWL!" she admitted.
Gizmo Duck was taken back. "You betrayed me? Again?" he said.

"I've got to get better at relationships," she said. Then she looked up at him.
"But it's not what you think!"

An egghead stepped up to her. "And what do you mean by that?" he asked.

Gandra tensed. "Nothing," she sighed. She put a hand on his shoulder. She traced one of the buttons on his suit with her finger. Without looking up, she said, "I'm sorry, suit."

The eggheads continued pushing the heroes away. Gizmo Duck was hurt on the inside. And Darkwing wasn't making things any easier. "Let me guess. You're a FOWL agent too," he sneered. Gizmo Duck sent him a look.

The eggheads shoved the heroes into Bradford's office. The vulture stepped up to them. "Well, well, well," he spoke sinisterly. He looked between Gizmo Duck and Darkwing. "We've got Gizmo Duck and a purple weirdo," he said.

Darkwing glared at him. "I am the terror that flaps in the night! I am the splinter stuck in your palm that breaks when you try to get it out. I am-"

Bradford interrupted him. "Yeah, yeah, whatever. What are you doing here? How did you find us?" he said, raising an eyebrow. The two heroes were silent. "Ugh, I hate uncooperative people," Bradford sighed.
"What do you want us to do with them?" one egghead questioned.

Bradford looked the egghead up and down, thinking. "Eh, I don't care. Dispose of them how you wish," he said, waving his hand.
The eggheads smiled and Darkwing and Gizmo Duck exchanged a look.

"You won't win," Gizmo Duck spoke up. But they were already halfway out the door with them. Bradford closed it behind them.

He was distracted from his thoughts by a girl calling him. He looked at the monitor, the source of the noise.

"Grandpa? Grandpa, I'm back," he saw Katie on the security footage. Bradford smiled. The girl looked hurt and unsure of herself. Bradford could put that to good use.

"Can you let me in?" she asked, standing outside Funzo's.

Bradford sat down at his desk and pressed a button on his speaker. "Phantom, could you please let miss Katie in?" he grinned.
