Chapter 14

"..."

I can't believe you're doing this. It's been a strange day, alright!

Katie didn't dare breathe. She snuck through the dark halls of FOWL. It was late at night. She chose that time so no one could see her. She thumbed a key card in her hand. The back had a barcode and the front had an image of a global with a talon grabbing it. "Thank you uncle Steel Beak," she smiled under her breath.

She stepped from around the corner, but immediately stopped. Cleaning the hallway was FOWL's agent/ janitor, Ammonia Pines. She swept with a red broom. Katie hesitated, hoping Ammonia hadn't seen her. It seemed like it, so she snuck behind her.

"What are you doing up?" Ammonia asked without looking at the robin.

Katie tensed. "I'm, uh, getting a glass of water!" she said.

Ammonia turned around and raised an eyebrow. "The kitchen is the other way," she said.

Katie bit her beak. "I know that! I just wanted water from the... bathroom. That's it. It tastes different," she replied, forcing a smile.

Ammonia looked at her strangely, then went on cleaning the floor. "Alright then, Katie. You do whatever," she said. Katie nodded and went on.

Finding herself standing before a door, Katie took out the key card. Black Heron had her normal lab, but then she also had this one. It was Black Heron's secret lab. She never let Katie in and it was restricted access only. Katie had been able to sneak Steel Beak's access card from him. She swiped it across the door, causing it to open. Then she crept down the stairs and into the lab.

...

Webby bit her beak, laying on the floor of their cell. She just couldn't sleep. "Gosalyn," she whispered, wanting to know if the redhead was still awake.

"Yeah?" Gosalyn replied.

"What do you think Black Heron meant when she said no one is coming to save us?" Webby wondered.

Gosalyn sat up. "I- I don't know. Just... Don't look to much into it. Probably just one of those things bad guys say to throw us off our game," she said.

The door to the cell creaked open, startling both girls. Without thinking, Webby jumped at whoever had opened the door. "Ha! We've escaped!" she whispered shouted, triumphantly standing on her victim.

The person she had landed on shoved her off. "No, I freed you," a girl said, getting to her feet. Webby stood up and dusted herself off.

"Who are you?" Gosalyn questioned.

Taking a good look at her, Webby could see the other girl was a robin. The girl stuck out her hand. "I'm Katie Buzzard," she introduced.

Gosalyn reluctantly shook her hand. "Gosalyn Mallard. Why are you helping us?" she questioned.

"Are you working for FOWL?" Webby wondered, still unsure.

Katie rubbed the back of her neck. "It's... complicated," she replied.

Gosalyn glared at her. "What's that supposed to mean? How can we know if you're trustworthy?"

Breathing in, Katie said, "You'll just have to trust me, okay?"

...

Scrolling through the phone in his hand, Drake sighed. "Ugh! This thing is a cluttered mess! There's no system to anything on this phone!" he let out. Boyd and Violet looked over his shoulder.

Drake handed the phone to the robot. "Here. Is there a way you can organize this? Help us find anything useful?" he asked. Boyd nodded, transforming his finger into a phone plug. He plugged it into the phone, then after a few seconds smiled.

"Alright, I sorted through it and downloaded the important stuff," he said.

"What did you find?" Violet asked.

"There were several voicemails between Bradford and the eggheads. They talked about some journal," he said.

Violet jumped up. "Isabella Finch's journal! Huey found it at the woodchuck race," she explained.

Drake put and finger to his chin, thinking. "Why would they want a journal?" he wondered.

"It has information and clues on how to find some of the greatest artifacts of all time. Those artifacts could be really useful to FOWL," Violet said.

"Then we have to get that journal before they do," Drake said.

"But where is it?" Boyd asked.

Violet looked around the room. "I don't know. Knowing Scrooge, he probably hid it," she said. The thought of Scrooge reminded her that they were gone. She stared down at her feet.

"Alright, kids. Then we better start looking," Drake said, interrupting Violet's thoughts. She nodded.

After several hours of searching, Drake rubbed his tired eyes. They had no luck in finding the journal. He glanced at a clock and saw it was past midnight. He looked over to Violet and Boyd. The robot had run out of battery a while ago, and Violet had tried to stay up as long as she could, but finally gave into sleep. Drake smiled sadly at them. All three of them were hurting, but now that the kids were asleep, he could let his guard down.

He soon caught himself crying, but he didn't fight it. He thought of his closest friend. Launchpad had been like a brother to him. They had been through thick and thin, pushing through together. But now it seemed like the crash happy pilot had met his match. Drake couldn't really comprehend the full gravity of the fact that his best friend was dead.

And then there was Gosalyn. Drake had no clue where his daughter was. Or even if she had met the same fate as Launchpad. All Drake could do was hope. But hope wouldn't bring back Launchpad. And hope wouldn't save his daughter.

Taking in a deep breath, Drake looked back at the two kids. They had been through so much, all of them. Drake decided to take another look at the phone.

Picking it up, he saw that most of what was on there had deleted. He raised an eyebrow. "What the heck?" he questioned. More and more of the data started erasing. He frowned. It was some sort of self destruct function. His eyes wandered over to Boyd. He had downloaded everything on the phone. It didn't matter if it deleted on the phone.

Then a thought came to Drake. Boyd had downloaded everything on the phone. Could that include some viruses too?

...

"How did you even know to come save us?" Gosalyn questioned, as Katie motioned for her to go up the elevator. The three girls went up.

"I just heard Black Heron talking about you. You're Webby, right?" Katie asked. The elevator doors closed.

Webby raised an eyebrow. "How do you know my name?" she asked.

Katie shrugged. "Huey mentioned you," she said.

To her surprise, Webby jumped on top of Katie. "Huey!? Where's Huey!?" she exclaimed.

Katie grunted and pushed the pink duckling off of her. "How about a warning next time you do that?" she said.

Webby and Gosalyn stared at the robin with wide eyes. "Huey!" they reminded.

Katie got to her feet. "Right. He and I are friends," she explained.

Webby and Gosalyn exchanged a look. Gosalyn put a hand on her hip. "Yeah, I'm sure, especially after he was kidnapped by FOWL," she said sarcastically.

Katie turned her head. "He wasn't kidnapped, he chose to join FOWL," she corrected.

"Pft, Huey's smarter than to join the bad guys," Gosalyn said. Katie bit her beak, trying to decide whether or not she worked for FOWL. She hated to admit it, but maybe they were the bad guys.

"And besides, being kidnapped happens all the time to this family. It's not that unrealistic," Webby said. Katie crossed her arms.

"Well, from what I heard, it's not a very good family," she said.

"What are you talking about! Huey loves his family," Gosalyn debated.

"That's not what my grandpa told me," she said.

"Well, your grandpa lied," Gosalyn said.

"My grandpa wouldn't lie to me!" Katie argued. She stopped. Did she really believe that?

"Where is Huey anyway?" Gosalyn asked.

"He went home," Katie replied.

Gosalyn and Webby smiled. "Nice! Now all we have to do is get back to our homes, and everything will be back to normal!" Webby cheered.

There was a beep as the elevator came to a stop.

Webby and Gosalyn followed Katie out of the elevator. They were now in the employees only room. It was dark, the only light coming from under the door crack.

"Alright, let's move," Webby said.

Katie stopped her. "Wait. To get out we have to pass through Funzo's Fun Zone," she said.

"And?" Gosalyn said.

"And that means dealing with the Phantom Blot. He doesn't need sleep so he guards up here," Katie explained.

She creaked the door open. The three girls surveyed the establishment, looking for any sign of the Phantom Blot. It looked clear, so Katie motioned for them to go. They snuck past the arcade and the ball pit. They had clear shot to the door.

"We're almost out," Katie smiled, facing Webby and Gosalyn. Then she turned forward and yelped. The Phantom Blot stood before her. A chill ran down her back..

Swallowing her fear, she gave him a small wave. His glowing eyes intimidated her. "I'm, uh, just... taking these prisoners to somewhere... else?" she said, questioning her own cover. Gosalyn face palmed behind her.

Suddenly, Katie took off running for the door, Gosalyn and Webby tailing behind.

The Phantom Blot grabbed Gosalyn. "Gah! Let go of me, you creep!" she shouted, fighting his grasp. She kicked and screamed. Webby came to her rescue, landing a hard kick on the mascot's face. Gosalyn dropped on her feet and high fived Webby. Then they headed for the door, meeting up with Katie.

"Come on, let's get out of here!" Katie said, throwing the door open. The girls raced out of Funzo's as fast as they could, heading for the mansion.

...

Letting out a yawn, Drake was determined to find that journal. But he still had no luck. His eye lids were starting to get heavy. He glanced over to the two kids, who had fallen asleep on each other. They looked so peaceful, at rest. Of course, that peace was a lie, but it was nice to have a break. Drake leaned his head on the table. He would just close his eyes for one second...

Drake woke up with a start. A loud banging came from downstairs. Before his mind had woken up, he looked around. Violet had also been startled awake, and Boyd was slowly loading. The banging on the door continued. It took Drake a minute to remember he was in McDuck manor. He got up from his seat and hurried downstairs quickly.

He looked through the peep hole and couldn't believe his eyes.

He opened the door as fast as he could, Violet and Boyd coming to meet him. When the door was open, all three stood in shock. Before them stood Webby, Gosalyn, and another girl.

Drake swooped his daughter before she could even say hi. "Oh my gosh! Gosalyn! I've missed you so much!" he cried, planting a million kisses on her.

She squirmed in his arms. "Missed you too, dad," she laughed.

Tears started to form in Violet's eyes as she stared at her friend in disbelief. "Webigail!" she grinned. The two girls met in a hug. Webby also found that she was crying now. Violet wiped the tears from her eyes, not wanting anyone to see her crying.

"Violet! It's been forever!" Webby smiled.

The other girl stood in the doorway, rubbing her arm awkwardly. Webby took notice of her. "Oh, Vi! This is the person who helped us escape," Webby said, pushing the robin forward. She gave a small wave. "I'm Katie," she introduced.

Violet stuck out her hand. "I'm Violet. Thanks for saving my friends," she said, getting her emotions under control.

Drake finally set Gosalyn down. Webby looked around puzzled. "Where's everyone else?" she asked.

Boyd, Violet, and Drake looked down at their feet sadly. Webby tried to read their expressions.

"Guys, where is everyone?" Gosalyn repeated.

Thanks for the support! I really appreciate it!
