Chapter 12
*Maniacal laugh
Readers: Why are you doing that?
Me: Oh no reason.... He he he....
It had been one week since Huey had joined FOWL. In that time, Katie realized that Huey would randomly be sad, and she assumed he was thinking about his family. She felt bad for him. From what her grandfather had told her about them, they didn't sound like a very good family. They had ignored him and got mad at him when he made the slightest mistake.
One afternoon, Katie was with Black Heron. Katie sat on a spinning stool. Black Heron was working on some type of invention. Katie was talking her ear off.
"So what kind of gadget are you making? That reminds me, that's what you should name your mouse. Gadget. You know, the one you made smart. I thought those little animals were so cute! I came up with names for all of them. Chip is the one in the hat, and Dale is the one in the flower shirt. Oh! And the other mouse I named-"
"Wouldn't you rather hang out with that McDuck kid?" Black Heron interrupted.
Katie did a spin in the chair. "I would, auntie Heron, but grandpa has him doing some sort of mission," she explained.
Black Heron rolled her eyes. "How many times have I told you not to call me that?" she said annoyed.
Katie ignored her and went on spinning on the stool. "I think it's so unfair! I've been wanting a mission since forever, and I don't get one. Then Huey shows up and he gets one within the first week!" she let out.
Black Heron went on working on her robotic arm. "Uh huh, so sad kid. I have to focus on this project, so why don't you go somewhere away from me," she said.
Katie sagged and climbed down from the stool. "Alright," she said, leaving the room.
"A mission? Cool! What do you want me to do?" Huey questioned. "I need you to steal this," Bradford said, passing him a photo across Bradford's desk. They sat opposite to each other in Bradford's office.
The photo had an image of a gun shaped thing. "Um, two things. One, what does this thing even do? And secondly, I don't feel comfortable stealing," Huey said.
Bradford clicked his tongue. "Alright, to answer your questions in order, this thing is a bazooka, but it's extremely powerful. And Huey, you don't need to worry about stealing, because no one is watching you as an example. Your youngest brother stole stuff all the time, right? If he could do it, so can you," Bradford said.
Taking a breath, Huey said, "Alright. When do I start?"
"You can begin in thirty minutes. I'll have some eggheads pick you up outside," Bradford said. Huey nodded.
In thirty minutes, Huey waited outside of Funzo's with the Phantom Blot. Huey was a little off set by his appearance. He tried to make small talk while waiting.
"So... do you work for FOWL full time, or is it just a side job? Which job do you like better? Funzo's or FOWL?" he asked, rocking on his heals. The Phantom Blot just stared at him with those cold green eyes. Huey tensed up and tucked in his tail.
Ending the awkwardness, a speedboat pulled up on the dock. Huey let out a sigh of relief. "Hey kid! Come on!" Steel Beak called. He was sitting in the driver's seat. Huey climbed into the boat and smiled. Steel Beak just grumbled something under his breath. "Alright, kid, where are we going?" he asked. Huey pulled out a slip of paper with coordinates that Bradford had given him.
Steal Beak glanced at it, then typed it into the GPS. Then he leaned back in his seat while the boat drove itself.
"You don't have to drive?" Huey questioned. He leaned into the dashboard and examined the technology. It truly was amazing. He ran his hands across the radio, smiling.
Steel Beak shook his head. "It's got auto pilot, and, I don't know how to drive this thing, so it all works out," he said with a smile. Huey couldn't help but give a laugh. Steal Beak raised an eyebrow. "What? Do you think I'm stupid? Cause I'm not!" he said.
Huey held up his hands defensively. "No, no, you just... remind me of someone, that's all," he said.
They soon arrived at the place. It was a lab out in the middle of nowhere. Cool blue waves surrounded them. The lab was like a building built on a platform. Huey assumed the platform went down all the way to the bottom of the water. Gray iron railing ran around the edges of the lab. The platform was wider than the lab itself. It gave enough room for a helicopter pad, even.
Taking in a deep breath, Huey snuck into a high tech lab. Huey would've been amazed at all the machinery if he weren't on a mission for FOWL. The lab was in the middle of nowhere, out at sea. It made Huey think of his cousin Feathry. He shook himself of his thoughts. He'd left his family behind. They didn't want him, so he didn't want them either.
He finally found the super powered bazooka in a pearly white room. He crouched in the vents. He had a walkie talkie in his hand. It buzzed. "Huey, this is Bradford, are you in?" Bradford asked from the other end.
"Yeah, but this lab seems pretty vacant. I don't think anyone's here to guard the weapon," Huey said.
"Trust me, there are people there. They're all in the break room, which is why I asked you to wait thirty minutes. Right now it's unguarded," Bradford said. Huey nodded to himself.
"Alright, I'm going in," he said.
"Wait a minute. I'll tell you when," Bradford said. Huey didn't understand why he had to wait, but he did so anyways. After several minutes, the walkie talkie went off again.
"Alright, now!" Bradford said.
Huey climbed down from the air vents. Creeping over to the bazooka, he realized the nozzle of it was actually outside the wall and in the ocean. Huey was puzzled. "That's weird," he spoke to himself. He tried to pull it out unsuccessfully. After trying with all his might, he gave in and leaned against it.
His elbow hit the trigger, causing it to go off. A loud boom was heard as the missile was sent through the water. Huey let out yelp. "Hope that didn't hit any boats," he said worried and uneasy. Then something caught his eye. On the wall was a red button that read RELEASE. He pushed it, and the bazooka came out of the wall. A panel was lowered to keep the room from flooding.
Huey picked up the weapon, which to his fortune was lighter than it looked. He snuck it out of the lab without crossing anyone's path. He got into the back of the speedboat with Steel Beak.
"You got the thing?" he asked. Huey nodded. Steel Beak drove (auto piloted) the boat back to FOWL headquarters.
Knocking on the door, Boyd stood a little nervous. Lena opened it. Leaning against the door frame, she asked, "Can I help you?"
"Hi. I'm Boyd! A definitely real boy," he greeted. The robot stuck out his hand and Lena looked at it.
"Sure. And I'm not a shadow," she said sarcastically. "If you have to say it, I'm not so sure you're real," she chuckled.
"I was wondering if I could talk to Violet," he said.
Lena rolled her eyes. "You can try, but I don't think she'll have it," she said.
Boyd twisted his beak confused. "What do you mean?"
"She hasn't been the same since last week. She's not herself," Lena explained.
She showed the robot boy in. Then they walked up the staircase to Violet's room.
"Hey, sis. Boyd wants to talk to you," Lena called to Violet through the door.
"Tell him to go away!" Violet answered.
Lena and Boyd exchanged a look. "Just let us in!" Lena demanded, opening the door.
The scene was Violet, plopped down on her bed. She was curled up in a big purple cotton blanket. Loud music was playing in the background, and the small trash bin held several woodchuck related posters.
"Violet, you need to- Can you turn off that music!" Lena blew her hair out of her face and covered her ears. Violet pressed a button on her phone and the music stopped.
Boyd gave her a wave. "Hey, Violet," he said sheepishly.
Violet glanced over at him, then looked back up at the ceiling. "Hi."
"Violet, we need to talk about what happened last week," Boyd began.
"No thank you," Violet interrupted. Boyd frowned.
Suddenly, Lena yanked her sister of the bed by her ankles. Violet let out a yelp. "Violet! Stop putting yourself in this hole! I get you're upset but get over it! You're not going to fix it by moping around all day!" she shouted. Violet rubbed the back of her neck.
Then the hummingbird took in a deep breath. Her eyes watered. "You're right, and I'm sorry," she said.
Boyd put out a hand to her. "Friends again?" he asked hopefully. She nodded and took his hand smiling. "Friends forever!" she said.
"Alright then! Today, Huey's family is going to go get him from those coordinates. You want to wait at Kilmotor hill for them?" he asked. She nodded. Then she turned to Lena.
"Thanks," she said.
Lena smirked. "What else are sisters for?"
"Alright, Huey, you got it?" Bradford questioned over the walkie talkie.
"Yes sir! Wow, this mission stuff is easier than I thought!" Huey grinned. Salt water sprayed from the side of the speed boat. Some splashed into Huey's mouth, so he decided against leaving it open. He spat out the little bit of water that had gotten in his mouth.
"Actually, the mission's not over yet."
Huey stopped. "What? But I got the bazooka!" he said.
"Stealing the bazooka was only half the mission," Bradford said.
Huey took in a breath. "Alright, then, what else do I have to do?" he wondered. "I've given Steel Beak some coordinates. Once there, he'll tell you what to do next," Bradford said, before the speaker went silent.
Huey looked up at Steel Beak. "So what am I doing?" he asked.
"Oh, look, we're here!" Steel Beak said, parking the speed boat. They were at some kind of island. It was filled with trees that reached high up. Their leaves spread out in large umbrellas. The palm trees swayed a bit with the wind.
Huey walked on shore with Steel Beak following. "Okay, we'll need the bazooka," he said, handing it to Huey. Steel Beak pointed beyond the horizon. "Out there is a submarine, and in it is secret information about FOWL. You have to shoot it down," he said.
Huey's eyes widened. "What!? Are there people on there?" he questioned worried.
Steel Beak shook his head. "Nah, it's auto pilot just like our boat. It's got information on it that we don't want to get into the wrong hands," he explained.
Huey bit his beak. "Well, alright then," he said nervously. He took hold of the weapon and looked through the scope. When he found the sub, he pulled the trigger. The gun had kickback, knocking the duckling on his back. There was a loud bang, making Huey's ears ring.
"Did I get it?" he asked in pain, a little too loudly for lack of hearing. In the distance, they could see a blast of water burst up and a huge wave splashed over the two. They were drenched and their clothes stuck to their bodies. Huey spit out some salty water.
"Wooh! Yeah kid!" Steel Beak cheered. He helped a soaking Huey up to his feet. "Ya know, I had my doubts about you at first, being a McDuck kid and all, but I think you'll make a good agent," Steel Beak added, ruffling his feathers. Then he looked down at himself. "But I am going to have to buy myself a new suit though."
One hour earlier...
Everyone was, in a word, upset.
Della was upset because FOWL had kidnapped her son.
Donald was upset because Scrooge had reluctantly given up his dime.
Dewey was upset because Louie still thought that Huey had left on purpose.
Louie was upset because Dewey wouldn't listen to him.
Beakly was upset because she was scared for her granddaughter.
Launchpad was upset because though he didn't know what was going on, he knew it wasn't good.
And Scrooge was upset because of everything.
Della boarded the submarine along with everyone else. The coordinates Bradford had given them put them right in the middle of the water, which Della thought was weird. Everyone was quiet, including her. She felt a pang in her chest, worry for her eldest filling her mind. Beakly was so sure that it was a trap, and everyone, in one way or another, knew she was right. Della just wanted the whole thing to be over. She just wanted Huey back.
As Launchpad stopped the sub, she was jerked forward. But Della didn't have the energy to yell at Launchpad. She was just so tired from lack of sleep and her tears. She just wanted to hold her son in her arms again. Donald set a hand on her shoulder, pulling her out of her thoughts. "You alright?" he asked. She nodded, forcing a smile.
"Launchpad, where are we?" Scrooge questioned.
Launchpad squinted, looking at a monitor. "Uh, I think this is the place," he said unsure.
Scrooge joined him and looked down at the coordinates. "Seems right, but where's Bradford?" he wondered.
Beakly jumped up. "I knew it was a trap!" she exclaimed.
Scrooge held up his hands. "Calm down, 22, everything's alright!" he said. Beakly sat back down.
Startling them, Scrooge's golden phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID. "It's Bradford!" he said. Everyone jumped to their feet and gathered around Scrooge to listen.
Della bit her lip, quiet for a fear she might miss something he had to say.
"We're here, Bradford. Now where are our kids?" Scrooge demanded.
"Yeah, well, that's the thing..." Everyone went quiet.
"Bradford! What are ye doing!" Scrooge questioned.
"You know, I always thought of myself as a bit of a novelist," Bradford said. "And I'm a big fan of chess."
"Get to yer point!" Scrooge demanded.
"I love to see all the little pieces put together, in just the right spot. Watch as everything falls into place," Bradford went on.
Beakly spoke up. "It's a trap. We have to go," she said. Scrooge put a hand up to stop her.
"And you know what I love most? Irony," Bradford added.
Everyone was getting impatient with the vulture. Della slightly wanted to just punch him in the face and move on with life.
"Scrooge, I don't want your dime. And I don't want your girls. The pink one is too hard to control, and the red head argues about everything. But your Huey is a rare gem," he said. Scrooge looked around at his family. Della felt uneasy. Dewey and Louie were huddled close to her.
"Now, you may think I'm some cruel and wicked person. I kidnapped a poor defenseless duckling in the middle of the night. Who knows what horrors your Huey may be facing," Bradford teased. Dewey's eyes started to water. Della caught sight of him from the corner of her eyes. She set a hand on his head for comfort.
"But Scrooge, I think you know what really happened."
Everyone stopped and looked at Scrooge.
"What is he talking about?" Della asked. Scrooge rubbed the back of his neck.
"Tell them Scrooge. You saw the recording. Why don't you tell them what Huey said," Bradford pressed. Scrooge couldn't handle the eyes of his family staring at him expectantly.
"Huey... Huey wasn't kidnapped," he began. Della looked at him confused. "He- He chose... to go with FOWL," he said, his voice cracking. Everyone gasped. Dewey and Louie exchanged a glance. Della couldn't handle this anymore. She stepped to the edge of the submarine and stared out at the water. She rather watch fish than have to deal with all this.
"That's right, McDucks. He chose to join us. In fact, he's having a great time here. He didn't need his family. You came to rescue a boy who didn't want to be," Bradford sneered.
Donald started squawking angrily, but Bradford interrupted him. "And you know what the most delicious part of this is?" he said.
Della was quiet, watching the waves go up and down. It hurt her too much to listen to that vulture anymore. But as she looked in the water, she thought she saw something. She squinted, trying to get a better look. It got larger, and she realized it was getting closer. Then she knew what it was.
"Clan McDuck ended at the hands of its own kin."
Della jumped up. "Everybody! A torpedo is heading straight for the sub!" she exclaimed. But it was too late. And the torpedo made impact.
