Chapter 1: The Dark Abyss
I woke up in a cold sweat, my hands feeling along the floor I way lying on. The room was dark with no visible windows. I felt along the concrete floor, attempting to find a door- a light- anything.
Panic rose into my chest, and fear gripped at my throat, choking me as the darkness that my eyes just wouldn't adjust to encompassed me. No matter how much I tried, I couldn't seem to slow down my heart, or steady my shallow breathing. I let my hands wander my body in attempt to find associate with at least myself. My legs were exposed up to my upper thighs until my fingers ran into small shorts. I didn't recognize them. They weren't mine. I felt upwards on my body, my fingers running across the straps on my shoulders. The lace of my bra seemed familiar to me. Perhaps that was the one thing that I knew. I was wearing a simple thin tank top that seemed to have a million holes in it. My hands found their way to my scalp to which my fingers combed through my hair. It seemed shaggy and matted and only fell to the bottom of my neck.
Composing myself, I let my bare feet slide against the floor so that my legs were stretched out. When my legs had become curled into my chest, I had no idea. I opened my mouth in attempts to call for help, but no sound would come out of my mouth. What did I even sound like? What did my face look like? I couldn't remember. I couldn't remember anything. It was if a deep fog took over my memory and blocked everything out.
I crawled forward until it seemed like forever. Just when I was about to give up, my fingertips made contact with the wall. I quickly brought myself onto my knees with my hands pressed firmly against the wall. Slowly I began to stand on my feet. I tried to be cautious due to the fact that I had no idea if my legs could even hold me. Shuffling across the walls, I became more desperate to find the exit. It was no use. Either the room was too large to find the end, or there really wasn't a way out.
Sinking to the floor with my back against the wall, I curled my legs tightly to my chest, lowering my chin to rest on top of my knees. I began to think of everything I didn't know: my voice, my face, my age, my name. I didn't know who I was. It was just me alone in this dark pit with no real memory of anything besides aching familiarity that I should have been able to piece together.
I sat there for what seemed like hours. What could I do besides that? Just when I was able to relax just the tiniest bit enough for me to maybe fade out into a sleep, I heard something above me. Were those voices? Footsteps maybe? Whatever it was, it was coming closer and closer until it was right above me. They were definitely voices. I stood up and strained my neck so that I might be able to hear better then just muffles of sound.
"Hey what's this?" I heard a low voice say. "This wasn't here yesterday was it, or am I really becoming that unobservant?" I heard a loud grinding above me. What was that person doing?
"What if it's some treasure someone tried to hide?" A high pitched voice said. "I guess it would be a horrible hiding spot with it being out in the open and all." The grinding got louder. A stream of light broke through the darkness and I shielded my eyes from the rays.
I heard a gasp from above me and when I looked up, about five people were standing there just peering down at me. Of course there wasn't a door out. The way out was up.
"It's a girl!" A younger boy exclaimed. "How'd she get down there?" He was smacked on the arm by a female whose features I couldn't quite make out from my vantage point.
"Who cares? She must be freezing down there. Come on guys toss down a rope and go get her before she freezes to death." A shuffling was heard above and suddenly a rope was let down almost hitting me in the face in the process.
"Watch out darling, I'm coming down for ya. You just stay right where you are alright now?" A young adult looking man swung himself over the top of my round prison and made his descent down to me. Once on the ground, he gave a little salute and fashioned a little pulley device. He smiled and offered his hand to me. "I know this is a little bit awkward since we've only just met, but my name is Stephen and if you would hold onto me, we're gonna get you out of here."
I looked nervously at his hand but figured that if they were murderers up there, at least i'd be dead then stuck in this hole until I starved to death. I stepped forward and he motioned for me to wrap my arms around his neck. He then gave a slight tug at the rope and wrapped his arms firmly around my waist, holding me very close to him. While awkward, the warmth was appreciated, and I couldn't very much complain. We reached the top and I was helped to the ground. I felt a jacket wrap around my shoulders and I turned my head to see another man who was clearly the one who gave me said jacket.
"Hey there, I'm Finn. Are you alright?" His words were gentle and soft spoken. It immediately calmed me and I went to answer. No sound came out of my mouth still. I closed my mouth and looked down at the ground almost ashamed at my lack of voice. The girl whom I saw touched my shoulder.
"It's alright if you can't talk. Why don't we get you back to our town and we can get you check out to make sure nothing's injured?" She smiled warmly at me and I nodded. I guess I didn't really have any options. I surely didn't know where I was from or even where to go from here.
"Come here Beauty. You can't walk in these woods with bare feet. I'll carry you." Stephen said as he was walking towards me. I didn't have time to protest when he very smoothly swung me into his arms. Did he practice that?
He called me "Beauty". Was I actually beautiful or was that just something he said. I didn't know and I guess I had stopped caring because I had soon relaxed and fell asleep.
