Illusion (Horror)
Here I was, still paranoid about the scary red orbs that seem to pop out of nowhere making me breathless, the white of eyes no more visible as red rules over it making me feel dizzy with just the thought of what could have possibly made that to happen. Was it blood? Was it a red dye? Or was it something else? Something much more sinister. And here she was Samantha, one of my best 'dubious' friends, so self-centered that she thinks the world revolves around her, talking about how much she understands me and 'adores' me.
"Seriously Maira, don't tell me you still see those. You est.", Samantha finished with a snort and I rolled my eyes at her.
"I told you before, it was just a misunderstanding.", I retorted, feeling annoyed by her casual demure.
"Yeah. You mistook a rabbit for a person who had red eyes.", she laughed for a few moments more than popped a nacho kept at the table chewing merrily.
However, she did miss my posture which had straightened with goosebumps rising at my skin. Should I tell her? Or is she going to laugh it off like everybody else?
'Not like she isn't laughing it off right now', I thought with a scoff.
"Oh come on, you don't have to look sad. We did forgive you, didn't we? You may have ruined our holiday but we hold no grudges against you.", she flashed me a fake smile.
She thinks that I believe her. If I can give you a list of fake friends could probably be topped by Samantha. I don't know why she came to my house in the first place. The things that happened this holiday, when the five of us went hiking to celebrate the eighteenth year of our life, had called off my friendship with those so-called-friends, forever. They thought, I had turned mad at our tour and was experiencing things that were not even there. How could have I made them believe me that 'No, They were real'? They stopped picking up my calls when we returned and I started ignoring them too. If my voice was so weightless for them, I'll prefer staying away from them too.
It all started when I saw that pair of red glowing eyes. And then a saw her everywhere. In my tent, at the waterfall, and most importantly, behind my friends. But no, they won't believe me because they didn't see it themselves. Eyes. A petty thing we all believe in.
"But tell me the truth, Did you see someone, or were you looking for some attention?", she asked shamelessly.
"I may have illusioned it or I maybe have not because I don't see it anymore.", I replied keeping my voice as calm as possible ignoring the flaring burn in my chest.
"Hmm. I guess. You must have been sick."
"Maybe."
"Did Mohini or the others even call you?", she asked and I gritted my teeth. Way to be nice, Ms. Samantha!
"No. No, they didn't."
"Oh."
"Isn't it getting late for you to go home?", I looked at my open window watching the full moon shining at the dark cloudy sky. The clock struck nine simultaneously and fortunately, Samantha realized that it was late.
"I have to go now. See you later.", she stood up clutching her bag and swinging it over her shoulder. I followed her to the front door and opened it to make her way.
She waved me bye and then walked off to her house which was just next door. I released a breath to calm down my nerves. I am alone now. Father is out on an office tour and mother is busy at the diner since they have a birthday party tonight. After closing the door and locking it with shivering hands, I turned around to make a ma ineralsedroom.
However, I stopped short seeing someone standing a few feet away at the top of the staircase. Cold sweat ran down my body and I could feel my breath catching in my throat. My heart thumped threatening to fall off my rib cage. My feet were glued down to the floor resisting all my movement of fleet. Shivers ran down my spine accompanied by my eyes which were bulged and my lips, which were parted.
Her face pale, eyes glowing, and lips smiling stood there motionlessly staring at the floor. Her left hand could be seen, scary and bloody. What might have caused them? The tattered brown clothes resembling rages and a mess of coiled black hair hid all her other features yet I could see the evil written all over her face.
After all, it's just a matter of eyes.
