Mera walked out of the blue building, her heart thudding in her throat. She passed the small garden and the steel gates without even noticing the security guard whom she greets whenever she visits here.
It was truly a very cherishing morning. The weather was not hot or cold. Everything seemed perfect. Even the melody of birds sitting on the branches of the tress along the road were pitched high elevating the scenic beauty. Yet, she paid no attention to them. Her thoughts were occupied with a loss of something she didn't even ever had or possessed. She felt the tears brim again but reminded herself of the vow and stopped them.
Weeks had passed since she had first entered this building which now had become a distaste and now she realised, maybe she shouldn't have entered it at all. Maybe she would have still been kept in dark then. So be it. But this pain she felt was beyond control. Her amber eyes looked lifeless and she walked or rather stumbled forward. Too shocked and saddened to accept the simple fact.
A green file was on her hand. She didn't dare open it. She knew the result that the doctor had so sadly told her. However, his sadness and pity did nothing to console her. What it did is to break her a little more. The blood test, ultrasonography and regular checking of her ovulation pattern finally gave her the most heart wrenching result.
She was sterile.
The thought itself brought a huge brick of dissapointment and despair on her heart. Dissapointment on herself. Was she not good enough? Was she not good enough for God? Who didn't even bother to give her the basic right of a woman. To create life. To nourish it. To cherish it.
What should she tell her husband? Derek will be so upset! That thought made her stop and gulp to keep the flowing emotions under control.
From an early day, Mera always wanted her own child who she could share her life with. She always imagines her child to be perfect. A ray of sunshine who would bring a smile on everyone's face. A child whose favourite person will be she. As she walked forward, she even noticed a three year old kid hugging her father while her mother was smilling down at her. Her heart further clenched at the sight.
She rubbed her hands on her jeans and straightened her shirt and a whimper left her lips. The suppressed whimper to want and need.
She struggled to walk again. Barely consoling her wrenching heart.
As she stumpled forward, she noticed a five year old girl standing below a tree trying to grab on to a flower which was out of her reach by two centimeter up on a low branches of the tree. Mera's lips spoke out an unknown language of grief and joy. Joy at the girl's childish lay and attempts. And grief at the realization that she will never be able to experience this. God!! What will she do?
As she observed the girl, tears spilled down and she didn't even make any effort to hold it back. She needed to find a solution. To have a baby. To give birth to a child like share always wanted. There are multiple surgeries present that can help her have kids again. She should try them on, right? Just to fulfill the one want she always had.
She clutched her purse tighter and moved forward to the little girl trying to reach for the flower dangling at the low tree branch. Her mouth spoke of incoherent sounds of her struggle. As the shadow of Mera fell on the kid, she turned around with a toothy grin. Her hair was in braids and one of her hands were wrapped around a torn teddy bear. Her face had a few freckles making her a universal example of cute.
She motioned towards the tree and and called out to Mera with the same grinning face, "Can you get me that flower?" Her tone had so much innocence that Mera's tear streaked face became jubilant with a smile and a motherly care.
As Mera remembered that occurrence from just a month ago, she couldn't help the glee that filled her whole being.
She, now, sat in the office of another blue building, this one much different to the previous one. She was dressed in a pink frock and pink hat. Her shoes were white and her hair this was was like the untamable beast as she moved with a certain sway in her steps. She, indeed, had changed a lot. Her husband, Derek was with her as he held her hands his and smilled lovingly at her. Her was dressed in a deep purple shirt and typical blue jeans.
They both looked like a couple with absolute happiness etched on their faces. It was indeed a perfect family seated on the plush sofa of the office.
"Are you ready, Mr. and Mrs. Smith?" The kind lady asked. Her high bun and spectacles with dark brown dress might look very intimidating to some but her face had nothing to any vigour. It was clearly plain kindness and sweetness.
"Yes"
"As ready as we'll ever be"
The couple answer together and Mera giggled at her enthusiasm; unable to keep the smile from spitting her lips.
Finally, the wait was over, the office door opened and out came the same freckled girl of five years wearing a pink frock and hat with white shoes identical to Mera. They had both chosen it together when they went shopping the previous week. Her hands were wrapped around a brandy new yellow teddy bear.
"Alicia!" Mera squealed. Alicia ran towards Mera and instantly claimed on her lap making herself comfortable in the position and greeting the headmistress with a 'Good Morning'.
"Why, you look lovely, little lady!" The headmistress complemented and Alicia blushed.
"So, are you ready to adopt Alicia Jones, Mr. And Mrs. Smith?"
"Yes!" The answer was collective and strong.
"And Alicia, are you ready to take Mr. and Mrs. Smith as your parents?"
"Yes." She shouted.
"Then lemme fill out these small paperworks!" The headmistress said in a joyous voice.
"So Ms. Smith, what ice-cream flavour would you like to eat?" Derek joked and pulled his daughter's cheeks.
"Chocolate!" She squealed and giggled at the same time. The girl was a ball of pure energy.
And as Mera looked at her daughter, she didn't feel that void anymore. That piercing pain anymore. All she saw was a chance give to nourish and cherish this bundle of energy. And she finally understood that she wasn't kept away from any blessing by the God. But, she was the blessing. A blessing to Alicia.
