Mama
*There is some swearing if that bothers you.
Mama
"Mama!" Lex screamed.
She struggled in my grasp as the man in the doorway cuffed Mama's hands behind her back. Papa was fuming, shouting at the officer as Lance and Ivan collectively managed to hold him back.
"You can't do that!" Papa yelled. "Marian never did anything wrong! Let her go!"
Mama didn't even fight it, just accepted her fate quietly. She looked at me, her blue eyes filled with sorrow. "Be a good girl, Theo. Take care of Lexi for me, alright?"
I nodded as she turned to Papa.
"You'll be alright," she told him. "You were always a fighter, Linus."
Then the guard pulled her through the door and closed it behind them. Papa struggled out of my brothers' grasps and opened the door, but the guard and Mama were already in the car, speeding off for the city. Lex gave up her fight, and I picked her up.
"It'll be okay, Lexi. It'll be alright," I whispered.
Papa shouted incoherently, slamming the door and pounding his fist on it.
"Theo, take Lex to bed," Ivan instructed, guiding me to the stairs.
I nodded. "Of course."
After climbing the steps I brought my little sister down the hallway and into her room. She changed into PJs, brushed her teeth, and went to bed soon after, falling asleep before her head even hit the pillow.
I went back down the hall and changed in my room before I brushed my teeth and hit the sack. I couldn't sleep though, being that my mother had been arrested and taken away forever only an hour ago.
I heard Papa's pounding fists come to a halt, and the house was filled with silence only until he stormed up the stairs and started yelling at Ivan about me.
"Goddamnit, Ivan! You bastard, if you hadn't taught your goddamn sister to fight like that we wouldn't be here! Your mother would be home, we would be okay!" He yelled.
"Cool it Dad," Ivan replied. "Lex is asleep."
He lowered his voice. "You will never teach Lexington to fight, is that understood? Because you've already ruined one daughter, I won't have you ruining the other one too!"
"Sure, Dad," Ivan muttered.
"Do not sure Dad me, young man!" Papa whisper-screamed.
"Yes, sir." Ivan walked away, and Lance snuck up the stairs and into his room behind Papa's back.
I will never forget, for the rest of my life, the long and piercing scream my father let loose that night.
