I'm tired of feeling empty inside.

"Pump two rounds of epi." They talk in a language I do not understand- medical. Whatever they are actually saying seems serious by the amount of lip-biting and eyebrow-itching amongst them. That and the loud beeping. "Miss, I'm afraid we'll need you to leave."

I try to argue back but a nurse simply wheels me out the room, away from Ella's bed. I am so defenceless. "Please, please tell me what's going on. I-I don't understand."

"Miss, your friend is having postpartum hemorrhage. It means that she is bleeding excessively as a result of the birth. And as for the baby... we had to perform a C-section because the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. We discovered he has a bad respiratory system and blood flow from being premature. Both mother and child will need medical attention and perhaps even surgery. I'm sorry but I have to go back now."

I- I- I... I don't know what to say. Ella and the baby are in danger. A huge black hole starts forming inside me, sucking out everything. I'm empty- wiped clean of any thoughts or responsibilities. Apart from one.

I need to make sure that they survive.

The looming memory of Kyle's face still haunts me as I collapse onto my bed. I haven't seen Dan since he walked away on the beach - I went to look for him but he wasn't where we were playing Frisbee. He wasn't in Phil and Ella's room either. He wasn't even down in the hotel café. He wasn't anywhere.

My stomach rumbles- it feels empty in there. I realise I haven't even eaten all day, in fact my last meal was before Dan proposed. Wait a second. Where's the ring? I remember Ella saying she put it back in the box, but where exactly is the box?

Nevermind - she'll know where they left it. Probably in her room or something. I pick up the hotel phone and juggle it between my hands. To order or not to order, that is the question. Yeah, I think I'll get room service. I'm starving! I press the star on the keypad and wait two rings.

"Hello, how may we help you?"

"Hi, um, can I order some food from here?" Papers shuffle around in the background before a small gasp. I feel awkward listening in on the woman murmuring with other receptionists.

"Not usually, but we can make an exception for our VIP guests." VIP? Really? Uh, sure. Why not?

"Thanks so much! I'd like a cheese and ham sandwich with a bottle of lemonade." I can almost hear her frowning at me.

"Is that all, ma'am? We have some of the world's finest chefs to cater for us. Would you not like something a bit more... Fancy?" Ha, the day I eat caviar is the day I meet the Queen. Basically never.

"That's all, thank you." I hold back laughs as she tells me that my food shall arrive in ten minutes before hanging up the phone. "OH MY GOD, THAT ACCENT THOUGH?!"

I swear, she makes me sound less British than Dan ever has. Where is Dan anyway? Shouldn't he be back by now? I'm getting worried...
