The Siege Pt. 1 Cont
><><
Kai, Ford and Sheppard followed Beckett and his team back to the infirmary and waited as they worked on Sergeant Bates.
John paced restlessly as they waited for news. Clearly it had been an attack. On the trip down to the infirmary he had doubled the marines on duty, but they were already operating on a skeleton crew with next to no sleep. He couldn't keep pushing his men and expect them to be ready to fight when the Wraith arrived. He needed to talk to Bates and find out what happened.
Teyla's pretty face, twisted in anger kept replaying itself over and over in his tired mind. He didn't want to even consider that possibility. If she had done this, then he had been wrong about her and she wasn't the person he had thought she was at all. He shouldn't have allowed Bates to leave alone when he was so pissed, he should have had Ford escort him...somewhere.
John sighed and scrubbed at his eyes. There were too many unknowns and blaming himself for all the things he coulda done was not going to fix the problem. He looked up at the others. Ford was sitting in a chair, staring at his hands thoughtfully. Kai stood against the far wall. She hadn't moved since they arrived in the infirmary, settling into the eerily stillness she could do sometimes. He was surprised to find she was watching him. Her expression wasn't exactly sympathy, but maybe understanding...John scowled and rubbed at the center of his chest as he turned and resumed his pacing.
It was nearly an hour before Beckett stepped out to see them. The Doctor looked as exhausted as the rest of them.
"Is he going to be okay? John asked.
Beckett's face was grim. "It's still hard to tell. He's got five broken ribs, a fractured collarbone and the concussion was quite severe."
"When can we talk to him?" John stepped forward, anticipating being let into the room immediately. They needed to get this problem sorted as quickly as possible, they had already wasted too much time.
"We can't," Beckett said apologetically, he led the way towards the Sergeant's bed. "I put him in a medically induced comma until the sub-dermal haematoma can be dealt with. We won't be finding out what happened from him any time soon."
Ford stared down at the unconscious Sergeant as the monitors around him beeped rhythmically. "Teyla and Bates got into it pretty bad yesterday," he said conversationally, glancing towards the Major sheepishly. He knew how close The Major was with Teyla, but there was no denying what happened.
John shook his head before Ford had even finished speaking. "A fist fight and a beating like this are a long drive apart."
Ford stiffened, he didn't appreciate being dismissed so easily. "I understand that sir," He said as respectfully as he could manage. "But they were in a fight and they both were looking to continue it."
John sighed. Regardless of whether or not he believed Teyla did it, Ford was right and other people would quickly come to the same conclusion if they didn't prove otherwise. He nodded, but didn't look convinced as he turned back to Beckett. "Anything pointing to who did this?"
Kai scowled as she stared down at the Sergeant. He wasn't a large man. He was shorter than the Major, but more muscular. She had seen him fight several times. Unless Teyla had caught him by surprise he wouldn't have gone down easily. The focus of the attacks on his head and shoulders also made her think someone at least his same height. It wasn't that Teyla couldn't have inflicted the injuries, there were just more convenient ways of incapacitating him if she so desired.
Beckett looked down at Bates. "I'm having a forensic exam of both his body and clothing performed right now." He informed the Major.
"Let us know what you find out," John looked to Ford and Kai. "Let's go get Teyla's side of the story," he said wearily.
The three of them walked most of the way in uncomfortable silence. Kai could feel the tension between the two men. It was rare to see Ford stand up to Sheppard and it had both of them off kilter.
They were approaching the residential quarters when Ford at last spoke. "You know how I feel about Teyla," he said briskly. "It's just that I think we need to keep in mind that there's a chance it wasn't her in control."
John hesitated for a moment and cut his eyes over to Kai. "What do you think Zian?"
Kai hesitated. "Me, Major?" she asked scowling.
"Yeah, you're supposed to be telepathic, right?"
Kai shook her head. "Not me, my people," she corrected gently. "And if you read Doctor Beckett's report...we don't have the ability to connect mind to mind in this way. The most complex psychic abilities were lost to the Mortii generations ago. At most some Mortii may protect against psychic attack or form a telepathic connection through a Bond-"
John hesitated for a step, he turned towards Kai frowning as half forgotten words chased themselves around in his mind.
"You have been so guarded," she said. "Had I not looked into her mind and seen you together I'm not sure I would have seen it myself."
"Seen what?" John asked in confusion.
Chaya smiled at him. "A Bond."
"Major?" Kai asked in confusion as John nearly tripped. He looked like he had seen a ghost.
"Ah never mind," he said shaking away the memory as they approached Teyla's room. "I guess we'll ask her," he said a little too quickly.
Sheppard stepped forward and knocked on Teyla's door. It was just a little after dawn. The door slid open and Teyla looked over the three of them cautiously. "Major?"
"Teyla," he said. "Can we come in?"
Teyla nodded and stepped back into her room. She sat down on the edge of her bed. "What is the matter?" She asked, looking over each of them, as though she could find answers on their faces. "What has happened?"
"Bates was attacked last night, he's in a coma," John supplied grimly.
Teyla's eyes widened in genuine shock. "Is he okay?" She asked first, then she hesitated as she took in the fact that all three of them were wearing full tactical gear. "You do not think I had anything to do with it?"
"Of course not," Sheppard assured her, though his hands were on his hips and his body language was anything but reassuring.
"You and Bates did get into it pretty good last night," Ford pointed out.
Teyla frowned as the young Lieutenant. "You know me Aidan, I never would have taken it that far."
"I know, so let's see if we can't rule it out all together."
Teyla's eyes cut to John who nodded, encouraging her to answer the questions. He had already seen the truth in her eyes when they told her Bates was hurt. Now they just needed an alibi to keep everyone else off her back while they figured out who did it.
"Where were you last night?" Ford asked crossing his arms over his chest. He had grown up watching Law and Order with his Grandma and he knew Sheppard would make a better good cop any day.
"I was here, in my room," Teyla responded looking back and forth between the Major and Ford, she wasn't sure why Ford was behaving so strangely.
"The whole night?" Ford pressed.
"Yes," Teyla said sharply.
"So there's no way of knowing if you blacked out or not," John said.
Teyla scowled, looking back and forth between her team members. she had thought they of all people would trust her in this. "I have no way of proving it no. But I did not leave the room last night, I am sure."
Both Ford and Sheppard nodded, though neither look entirely convinced convinced.
She sighed tightly. "I did not leave this room," she repeated.
Kai however wasn't paying attention to their exchange. Instead, she was looking around the room with interest. Teyla had decorated the room with warm fabrics and sheer scarves making it feel like the inside of a tent. Everything was beautiful and feminine. However, the glowing blue lights of the door controls stood out starkly against the wall.
"Major," Kai said frowning at the door control.
"Yeah?" He asked turning back to Kai.
"I don't know if it's the same in the residential rooms, but a lot of the security protocols record the opening and closing of doors. I might be able to find out if this door was opened last night," she said thoughtfully.
Weir's voice came of the comm. "Sheppard, Ford please report to my office."
"We're on our way," Sheppard replied. "What do you need to do it?" He asked turning back to Kai.
Kai shrugged. "Just my tablet. I'll grab it and hopefully have an answer inside of an hour."
"Do it, report back to me as soon as you find anything," he nodded to Teyla and he and Ford hurried towards the control room.
Kai fast walked back to the lab. When she came back she knocked on the door before opening it. Teyla's face was shuttered and she still sat on her bed.
"I just need access to your door panel," Kai said awkwardly as she motioned towards the controls.
Teyla nodded but she was staring down at her hands as her fingers tangled together.
Kai worked on the panel for several minutes before Teyla spoke up. "Do you also believe I am capable of this?"
Kai snorted humorlessly but she didn't look up from her tablet. "Of course you're capable."
Teyla was silent for a long moment and when Kai looked up she could see the shock on the other woman's face. Kai made a noise of impatience in the back of her throat. Teyla could be sensitive sometimes and Kai wasn't well practiced in dealing with emotions. If a Mortii had grievously insulted another a combat challenge could be issued. Kai hadn't witnessed any of those, so she assumed a different type of conflict resolution was used.
"It doesn't mean I think you did it," Kai explained. "Honestly, between you and I, I think I'm more likely to lose my temper..."
Teyla didn't argue but she still looked hurt. Emotions were swimming in her dark eyes. "Major Sheppard-" She started to say.
"The Major has to do his job," Kai interrupted impatiently. This was exactly what happened back on that planet with Teyla's friends. She couldn't tell the difference between what the Major had to do and what he wanted to do, and then she blamed him for things he couldn't change.
It made Kai mad because she knew that even though he didn't show it, the Major cared about his friends and it had to bother him. "He isn't afforded the luxury of an opinion," Kai said bluntly. "He has to do things by the book or people will question him. They'll question his ability to do his job. To be..." Kai gestured helplessly as she struggled to find the words to explain. "The Major," she finally said with a shrug. "Who you are and the things you must do...they are not always the same."
Teyla sniffed, shifting uncomfortably. "I have not found that to be true."
Kai turned to face Teyla fully. She met her gaze unrelentingly and unapologetically, although her Storm grey eyes were sad. "Then you are very lucky," Kai told her friend honestly.
Teyla scowled and looked as though she didn't understand. She opened her mouth to say something, but Kai's tablet beeped.
Kai looked down, unsurprised to see that Teyla's door had remained closed through the night. She disconnected the wires and tucked the tablet under her arm. "You're clear," Kai told Teyla honestly. "I'll let the Major know."
"I'm sure he and Lieutenant Ford will be relieved," Teyla replied.
Kai hesitated in the door and turned back to Teyla. "They will be Teyla. Everything they did was to protect you, to prove to the others that you were innocent so you would be able to be on active duty and help in the investigation."
Then Kai turned away and hurried to Weir's office. She was in the control room when she was able to hear their conversation. Weir, Ford and Sheppard were sitting in her office with the door open. She assumed no one else in the control room could hear their conversation.
Ford was speaking. "The whole Wraith connection thing, and her nightmares make me nervous."
"What are we going to do about it?" The Major's voice was sharp with sarcasm. "Stick her in the brig? It's Teyla we're talking about."
Weir was the first to see Kai. "Kai," she greeted as Kai approached the door.
Kai nodded respectfully and the other two looked over their shoulders at her. When Sheppard saw it was her he sprung to his feet.
"Well?" he asked, his eyes flickering to the tablet under her arm. "Did you find anything?"
Kai nodded. "According the control panel the door was not opened. Unless she climbed out the window Teyla is clear."
Sheppard exhaled in relief. "Well that's a relief," he said flopping back into this chair. He scrubbed at his gritty tired eyes.
"Except now we have to figure out who was responsible," Weir pointed out. She wrapped her hands around the warmth of her coffee mug. She was also relieved Teyla had been exonerated. She hadn't wanted to believe the Athosian leader was capable of attacking one of their people, but unlike the Major she was able to see how a situation could have escalated. Teyla was a very skilled fighter and if she had lost her temper anything could have happened.
"So we're back to square one," Ford said grimly.
"Well, we have security footage," Weir said thoughtfully. She turned to Kai. "Are you able to continue to help in the investigation? Or does Zelenka need you back in the lab?"
"I can help," Kai assured her. "Zelenka will contact me if he needs my-"
The slap of running feet sounded out in the control room and Kai turned to see Beckett jogging towards Weir's office. "We have a situation on our hands," he said urgently as he fought to catch his breath.
"What's going on?" Weir asked.
"I've completed the tests, found DNA on Sergeant Bates uniform."
"And it's not Teyla's," John filled in for him.
"No Major," Beckett replied grimly. "I ran the test twice to be certain. It's conclusive. We have a Wraith in the city. "

John's team plus Kai were meeting with Weir, Zelenka and Beckett in the conference room. He had two teams of marines on standby. He initially planned on Stackhouse's team taking the second team of marines to hunt the Wraith but he was still off world checking out the potential Alpha sites. Instead, he would have to divide up his own team.
"Someone tell me how this is possible. How can a Wraith get inside the city?" He asked grimly.
"They didn't gate in," Ford said.
Kai frowned thoughtfully. "The dart," she said half under her breath.
"What?" Sheppard asked turning around to face the small Mortii.
She pressed her lips together grimly. She was mad at herself for not thinking of it sooner. "The Wraith dart that scanned us. They said it made it's way through the city, scanning the whole thing. As soon as it was done it self destructed."
"So they beamed into the city," Sheppard finished for her.
Kai nodded.
"Can they do that?" Ford asked.
"They beam people up, they have to be able to beam them back down," Kai said with a shrug.
Weir crossed her arms over her chest. She didn't like that their city suddenly didn't feel safe. "So the pilot of the wraith dart scanned us, transmitted information to the hive ships, beamed down here and destroyed his ship."
Zelenka was nodding. "Seems plausible."
"That is precisely the time I began to sense the wraith continually," Teyla agreed.
Sheppard scowled. "No wonder you were having nightmares," he said wryly.
Weir bristled. "What's he been doing here all this time?"
"Well," Zelenka said thoughtfully. "Bates was attacked near the generator that powers this tower."
Sheppard scowl deepened. "Maybe the Wraith's job is to knock out the power before the hive ship gets here. Leave us dead in the water."
"Or ensure the self destruct plan failed," Kai added.
"Or a combination of both," Ford agreed.
"Exactly," Weir agreed. "We do know for sure that we have a Wraith intruder in the city that we have to track down."
Zelenka stiffened. "I may have an idea." He led the way back out into the control room toward the sensor terminal. "Kai get the-" he started to say but Kai was already carrying the crystals towards him. He nodded his thanks and began reassembling them. "This is a biometric sensor we've had on-line for a month or so. It detects irregularities in biometric rhythm and reports them."
Sheppard frowned down at the console watching as Zelenka and Kai moved in perfect unison without having to say a word to one another. "Wouldn't it have picked up on the Wraith?"
"Well, it requires a lot of power. We've narrowed it's field of focus to scan solely in the gate room, figuring that was the only place the Wraith, or any other alien entity would enter the city from."
The overhead screen activated, small white dots appeared over the top of a schematic of the city.
"Okay, so that was wrong," Sheppard said glibly.
"Yup," Zelenka agreed as he frowned down at the console. "Now, if we can just expand-my god..." Zelenka drew off. "There he is," he said motioning towards the single red dot, blinking in one of the abandoned sections of the city.
"It works like a life-signs detector," Kai explained to the others. "Except it's able to distinguish different species." Glancing up at the screen she could see where their group was standing in the control room. She found it interesting neither she nor Teyla showed up as being different species according the the scanners.
"That's him?" Sheppard asked stepping up next to her.
"That's him," she confirmed grimly.
Sheppard glanced down at Kai. Her body was tense as she stared up at the screen. He glanced back towards Zelenka. "We can track him in real time?"
"Yes."
Sheppard turned back to the group. "All right. With Stackhouse off-world I need another team leader," he turned Kai. "You in?" he asked. She nodded briskly. "Okay, I want two teams. Ford, you're with me. Teyla, Kai you'll lead the other team of marines. Let's go get him."
><><
Kai and Teyla led the second team of six marines around to the south side of the Wraith's position. The Major's team had taken the more direct north attack position. Team one would be in position before them. Beside her Teyla had her P-90 in her hand. Despite the Major's offer of one of her own, Kai was more comfortable with the handgun and her Blade.
The comm between them was open "Is he still in place?" The Major's low voice came through.
"Yes, he's still in the same room," Zelenka confirmed. "Hasn't moved since we located him."
"Well, let's hope he's still sleeping. We're gonna breach from different directions. If he tries to get out the other door, take him. Teyla, Zian you in position?"
"Almost," Teyla replied.
"My teams ready," Sheppard replied. "Stand by."
Over the comm Kai could hear his impatient sigh and the quiet click as he fiddled with his gun. The Major was not a patient person. She increased her speed as a bad feeling went over her. The others behind her followed suit.
"We're in position," he said after another moment. "We're going now."
"Sheppard wait!" she yelled but he didn't listen. She could hear the men's movement's, their sharp breaths and in the background she heard a wraith stunner firing. She jerked, feeling for a moment as though it had been her that was hit. She took off in a sprint for the Major's position.
She was well ahead of the marines and Teyla when she spotted the Wraith. He was crouched over the Major. "Nothing will keep us from our new feeding ground," he snarled. He raised his feeding hand, and was about to slam it into the Major's chest.
Kai emptied her entire clip into the Wraith before it staggered back from the Major. She ran straight for the Wraith. She dropped to her knees and skidded across the floor, slicing across the back of it's knees with her Blade. The Wraith yelled angrily as it collapsed to the floor, it's stunner skittered across the floor away from it. Kai threw herself into a forward roll and snatched up the stunner. The Wraith had pushed itself back to it's feet when she spun back towards it and fired two stun shots into the center of it's chest. The Wraith went down.
She could hear the running feet of her team as they came into the room. Kai shoved the stunner into her belt and scrambled over to Sheppard. He was laying too still, the Wraith had ripped the top half of his vest and t-shirt open. She was relieved to see the skin was smooth and uninjured. He hadn't fed. She touched him and he jerked and lunged at her. His eyes caught hers and as soon as he realized it was Kai he relaxed back down.
Kai laid a hand against his chest to steady him. "You're okay Major," she promised him. She felt the gentle nudge in the back of her mind but she was too relieved Sheppard and his men were uninjured she didn't care.
John's brows drew together in a frown as he fought against the effects of the stunner. He fought to make his muscles work, but it took all of his energy and focus just to keep his eyes half open and stay awake.
"Your team is safe," Kai assured him as though she could read his mind. "Just relax," she told him. "Beckett's on the way down to look you over, but it looks like you took a stunner to the chest."
John leaned back and let himself rest. "Yeah," he said.
There was a long moment of silence between them. Kai suddenly realized she was still touching the warmth of his chest and she snatched her hand back. "I told you to wait," she told him.
John snorted and groaned as pins and needles erupted through his body. He groaned. "Are you seriously saying I told you so right now?"
A small smirk tugged at the corner of Kai's mouth and John let himself close his eyes, knowing Kai would take care of things.
"How is he?" Teyla asked urgently as she knelt beside Kai. The Major was unconscious, his head turned towards Kai.
"He's okay, Ford?" Kai asked.
"The others are fine," Teyla promised. "I have already reported to Weir and Doctor Beckett is on the way."
Beckett arrived shortly after and he and his team began lifting the unconscious men onto gurneys and moving them to the infirmary. Teyla stood over them, waiting until the last two, Ford and Sheppard were lifted.
Teyla turned back to Kai, a troubled expression in her eyes.
"Go with them," Kai encouraged. "I'll escort the prisoner," she said jerking her chin towards the Wraith. The remaining marines had found shackles and were preparing to move him to the brig.
"Are you certain?" Teyla asked. It had not escaped her notice how close Kai and Sheppard had been when she first arrived.
"Of course," Kai responded briskly and she turned to the Wraith. "Let's move," she said to the marines. Two of them grabbed the shackled Wraith's arms and between them they dragged the unconscious prisoner towards the holding cell.
><><
The Wraith had been awake for nearly an hour. He stood in the center of his cell at attention, his entire focus on Kai who stood just outside the bars staring him down. The marines all moved and shifted their weight nervously, but the two of them were like the eye in the center of a storm.
The Wraith had sniffed the air once and cocked it's head to the side as though it wasn't quite sure what to make of the small warrior standing in front of it. It had glanced towards the men surrounding the small Queen but they all lacked the quiet power of the one before him. A slow smile stretched his face. He had not believed one of such strength resided in this place.
The Wraith was studying her. The others behind her shifted a few times and she wondered if he was trying to make them see things, if he was testing her in some way. Wraith psychological tricks had never worked on her or her people. Instead of seeming upset, the Wraith looked amused.
The doors behind Kai slid open and she heard the distinctive movements of The Major, Ford and Teyla as they stepped into the room.
"Good to see you on your feet sir," one of the marines said quickly, and Kai knew how uneasy they had been without their commanding officer. She could handle a Wraith, but none of them knew much about her beyond what they had seen.
John nodded to the man and stepped up next to Zian. The small woman seemed to be having a staring contest with the prisoner. "Where we at Zian?" he asked in a low tone. "He said anything yet?"
Kai shook her head. "Nothing."
"Why's he smiling?" he asked.
"I think it's amused it make me see things like the others," she said with a shrug.
John turned back to the four marines stationed in the room. "Has it been making you see things?"
They all nodded and he glanced down at Kai. It was good to know the Wraith couldn't implant images in her mind. He wondered if it had something to do with the telepathy she claimed to be so bad at. Shrugging it off he stepped up to the bars.
"You got a name?" he asked the wraith grimly.
The smile on the Wraith's face transformed into a snarl and he stared John down.
"Okay," John said brightly as though it didn't matter one way or another. "We'll go with Bob. Bob, I'm going to need to know what you've been doing here the last two weeks and I'm going to need to know now."
The Wraith growled low in his throat and John sighed.
He turned back to Ford who was standing over his shoulder holding a stunner. "I don't think he's in a very talkative mood sir," Ford told him.
"I need to know what he's been doing and whether he's been transmitting back to the hive ships."
Ford frowned. "Wouldn't we have picked up a transmission?"
"He could have sent a secure message."
Teyla looked over the Major's shoulder towards the Wraith. "Maybe I can try to connect with him," she offered.
John scowled. "I don't think so."
"If the Alpha site has been compromised we need to know."
John didn't like it, not one bit, but he had already tried to break a Wraith prisoner. It had taken weeks before he had even blinked. They didn't have time for this. He looked over at Kai. She nodded once, infinitesimally. Of course she agreed with Teyla. "Fine," John sighed. "See what you can do."
Teyla stepped up to the bars and closed her eyes as she sought the connection. The Wraith stepped up to the bars. "What are you doing human?" it growled in a dangerous tone.
The Wraith frowned thoughtfully. "You're trying to get inside my mind..." a slow smile crossed the Wraith's face. "Allow me."
Teyla's head snapped back and she cried out. She fell back, gripping her temples as pain exploded through her mind. Kai caught Teyla and the two went down to the floor, Kai cradling Teyla in her lap.
"Teyla!" John yelled. "Stop him!"
The cell door slid open and John fired two shots into the Wraith's torso. He flinched forward but didn't go down. It had broken his focus enough for him to let Teyla go.
"Are you okay?" Kai asked Teyla.
Teyla nodded as she panted. She pushed herself up as she fought to catch her breath.
"My wounds will heal," The Wraith promised the Major.
"Yeah?" John asked dangerously. "For how long?" he fired another five shots into the Wraith. It fell forward onto it's knees, crying out in pain. "I need to know what you've done to this city!" John yelled to be heard over the Wraith's gasps of pain. He shot him two more times and stalked into the cell. He ejected the empty clip and slid a new one in. He cocked his head to the side as he pointed the gun at the Wraith. "Listen Bob," John growled. "I have no problem with killing you whatsoever," he promised.
The Wraith leaned forward, snarling defiantly.
"I'm not screwing around Bob!" John bellowed.
Teyla flinched beside Kai.
"Did you sabotage this base or not!" when the Wraith didn't answer again John fired another three shots into it's torso. It cried out and fell back to the floor.
"Those," it panted. "Who feed upon you, will know what you've done to me," the Wraith promised.
"Yeah?" John challenged taking another aggressive step towards the Wraith. "We'll see."
"Sir," Ford called, his voice pitchy with his uncertainty. "I think maybe we've gone a bit too far."
The Wraith's eyes cut to Ford and Kai wanted to curse out the Lieutenant for showing weakness and undermining The Major.
"I don't think we've gone far enough."
The city-wide announcement system activated, distracting them all. "May I have your attention please?" Doctor Weir's voice came through. "Our plan to stop the Wraith armada has failed. They will make it to Atlantis. Therefore we must begin our evacuation plans. I wish I could tell you all this is a fight we will win, but I can't do that."
The Wraith began chuckling.
"I wish I could tell you we will find a safe harbor when we leave here. I can't promise you that either. I can tell you this, up to know, you all have accomplished extraordinary things and I believe that even in the face of an uncertain future, as long as we stay together, we will continue to do so. Now, we all have our evacuation duties. So thank you, and I'll see you on the other side."
The comm clicking off was drown out by the horrible, chest rattling laughter of the dying Wraith. "I will tell you this," it finally said. "No matter where you flee, we will find you," it promised. "Just as surely as we will find earth. And when we do...we will feast."
Kai watched the Major's face as his jaw tightened and resolve settled into his hazel eyes. He stalked forward and fired the last three shots it took to kill the Wraith.
Ford and Teyla stared at him in shock as he turned back to face the group. "You have your orders," he said grimly as he tucked his sidearm back into it's holster. "We're evacuating."
