Trust is a Finicky Thing
A/N: Hey guys! I thought I'd give you a one-shot of something I thought of at 1 am yesterday. Here it is! I hope you like it and also stay tuned in for more updates on my main story, UA Staff Chat (On Crack)!
Sometimes, trust is a finicky thing. One moment it's there and another, it's gone.
The life of a quirkless person is not one you wish to have but is given to you. You are stuck with it and everywhere you go, it follows.
Just because you have a quirk now, doesn't mean the pain goes away. It's there, just hidden behind the mask you call a smile.
One Izuku Midoriya will finally come to amends with his mentor and find a huge truth he should have been told months ago. This one truth will shift all the trust he had gained in his mentor since he met him. That trust he had is just a murmur of what it was originally and an even smaller whisper of what it was when he was younger.
The trust in one person is something that should be carefully attended too and is just like a string. Once the string snaps, there is no going back.
Izuku's POV
"You originally became a teacher at UA to find a successor, right?"
"Yeah, " says All Might.
"I could physically feel everyone's strong emotions of not wanting to give in. So I..."
"Think that someone else should be my successor?"
The already thin string stretches.
Sigh.
"Yes. Then-"
"But you know, I was quirkless too."
...
The silence that followed was deafening. Izuku's breath hitched, and for a moment, he forgot how to speak.
"W-what?"
The thin string frays.
"You knew?"
Izuku's voice cracked, trembling as he took a step forward. His body ached from the fight with Todoroki, but the pain in his chest burned hotter.
"You knew what it was like, and you still told me I couldn't be a hero?!"
The already too thin string frays and frays even more.
"Young Midoriya—"
"No!"
The string snaps.
Izuku's voice rang out, louder and sharper this time.
"Don't try to explain it away!"
He took a shaky breath, his fists clenching at his sides.
"You—of all people—should've understood what it feels like to be powerless. To have everyone look down on you, to tell you you're not enough. You knew what that was like, and you still stood there and said I didn't have what it takes."
All Might winced, his hands tightening into fists at his sides.
"I only wanted to protect you," he said, his voice low but earnest. "The life of a quirkless hero is—"
"Impossible?" Izuku snapped, cutting him off.
"Dangerous? Do you even hear yourself right now?! You sound just like every other person who told me to give up. Just like every kid who laughed at me for dreaming too big. Just like Kacchan!"
The mention of Bakugo's name made All Might flinch, but Izuku didn't stop. His voice cracked, but his anger only grew sharper.
"Do you even know what your words did to me? What you almost did to me?!"
All Might froze, his wide eyes meeting Izuku's tear-filled ones.
"You weren't just another person telling me I couldn't do it, All Might. You were you. You were my hero. I believed in you more than anything. I thought... I thought if anyone would understand, it would be you," Izuku said, his voice trembling.
"But you didn't. You looked at me like I was nothing. You told me to give up."
Izuku's hands were shaking now, his voice raw as he continued.
"Do you have any idea what it's like to hear that from the person you look up to most in the world? I already had Kacchan telling me every day that I was useless, that I'd never be anything. I already had people laughing at me, teachers ignoring me, and strangers looking at me like I didn't belong. And then you—" He choked on the words, tears streaming down his face.
"You just made it worse."
All Might opened his mouth, but Izuku didn't let him speak.
"I was on that rooftop," Izuku said, his voice dropping to a whisper, "and for a second... I thought maybe everyone was right. Maybe Kacchan was right. Maybe I really was just a useless Deku who should stop trying. And when you said those words to me, I thought..."
He hesitated, his chest heaving as he tried to force the words out.
"I thought maybe it would be easier to just give up. On everything."
...
The room was deathly silent. All Might's face paled, his breath hitching as Izuku's words struck him like a physical blow.
"I didn't jump," Izuku continued, his voice bitter, "but it wasn't because I still had hope or because I was strong. It was because of the explosions."
His voice cracked, and his trembling hands gripped the edge of the table behind him.
"I was so out of it—so caught up in the pain and the voices in my head telling me I was worthless—that I didn't even notice what was happening. But then I heard those explosions. Kacchan's explosions. They snapped me out of it. And when I realized what was happening, I ran."
All Might's throat tightened, but he stayed silent, unable to form the words to respond.
"I ran into danger because of him," Izuku continued, his voice gaining a sharp edge.
"Because I remembered something you always said. In every interview, every speech. You'd always smile and tell the world, 'A hero is someone who can inspire others to act. Even without power, anyone can be a hero.'"
He let out a bitter laugh, tears streaming down his face now.
"Do you even remember saying that? I remembered it. I believed it. Ever since I was a kid, those words were my hope. My lifeline. They were the reason I thought maybe—just maybe—I could still be something someday."
His voice dropped into a pained whisper.
"But then I met you. The real you. And you told me the opposite. You told me to give up. To stop dreaming. And for a moment, I believed that, too."
The tears wouldn't stop, but Izuku pressed on.
"Do you see how hypocritical that is, All Might? You inspired me my whole life with those words, only to turn around and crush me when I needed you most. You're living proof that a quirkless person could still make a difference, and you didn't even give me the chance to try. Someone believed in you enough to give you One for All, but when it came to me, you just... gave up."
All Might's hands trembled as he took a step forward, his face pale and his lips parted as though he wanted to speak, but Izuku took a step back.
"You didn't believe in me," Izuku whispered, his voice raw.
"And because of that, I don't know if I can believe in you anymore."
He turned, his back to All Might as his shoulders shook with silent sobs.
"Stay away from me," he said, his voice barely audible.
Izuku walked away, heading to the stands, and All Might was left standing alone, his towering frame hunched under the crushing weight of his guilt. The silence that followed was unbearable, filled only with the echo of Izuku's words that would haunt him for a long time to come.
The string is broken and shall stay broken for some time.
It is not till someone finds out about this encounter that the string will start fixing itself.
It is not for a couple of months does that string truly start healing.
It is not till one Izuku Midoriya finds a family in which he trusts his secrets with will that string have been truly fixed and the trust he could and have given to one Al Might was given to someone else.
Sometimes, trust is a finicky thing. One moment it's there and another, it's gone.
