Gone
(Y/N) POV
I sat in the cafeteria alone eating lunch.
I've been busy doing a bunch of maintenance. With more than half the crew gone, it leaves us 3 having to work triple time.
And even with that, I do the most work. Newton is usually too busy navigating and Olivia isn't strong enough for most of the labour tasks.
So it results in me straining myself trying to get it all done.
Newton has described what happened to HQ, and they responded with a bunch of quotas they want to be met before we can land back at home.
I was barely getting any sleep, I'm sure I probably have giant dark bags under my eyes.
"Oy," I hear a voice from the comm room
"What?" I ask as I pop my head in
"Some help please," Newton asks as I start doing random things.
"Your too shaky," he yells as I try to connect a wire.
"I can't help it," I say as he sighs
"I'll get Olivia, you stay here," he mutters as he leaves.
I mock him under my breath for a while. 10 minutes later and he still hasn't gotten back
"What the hell is he doing?" I ask as I stand up.
As I do, Newton turns the corner
"I knew it!" He yells as he pins me against the wall
"Knew what?" I ask confused
"I knew you were a parasite!" He yells as I get even more confused
"I don't know what you're talking about, what happened?" I ask him as he keeps me pinned against the wall
"Olivia...I can't find her!" He says
"Why wouldn't I just kill you then, if I killed her, you'd be dead by now too eh?" I yell back as he goes silent
He drops me from the wall as I regain my footing.
"Think for Pete sake," I mutter as he scowls
"You better find her or you going into space," he insists as he walks out of the room
"What the hell was that?" I ask as I start looking. Sure enough, Olivia was nowhere to be found.
"Where are you?" I ask myself as I walk all the halls looking at the ceiling. The last time there was a corpse, it was hiding.
But that doesn't make any sense. If she is dead, the only person who coulda killed her is Newton. And if that's the case why am I not yet dead?
I take a moment to think.
Maybe she's stuck somewhere? I don't think so, there are really no cramped spaces that she would be in...plus she'd be calling for help.
Wait...cramped spaces.
I remember the one time Olivia showed me a place she likes to go to.
I walked to the place that we watched the stars that one time.
I squeezed through the opening and went to the window. And there she was
"There you are," I call out as I get closer. She must be sleeping as she didn't respond.
"You got Newton all worried," I mutter as I reach her. I shake to wake her up
But me shaking was the only thing that happened.
"Olivia?" I ask as I shake her more forcefully
I rolled her over so I could check her vitals...nothing
My heart sank as I look at the Cyan suit. It was lifeless.
I found a bottle of medical pills in her hand
"Oh," was all I could say.
So she killed herself.
I didn't know...I didn't know what she was feeling like.
A person that was alive a few hours ago...is now gone.
Of all the deaths within the past few days...this one hit me the hardest.
It was supposed to be over...we were supposed to go home.
I felt tears around my eyes.
I didn't realize how much I started to care for her.
When I think back, I always think that she was there.
If only I had known what you were going through.
I stayed in the area for a little while. Looking at the lifeless Cyan body.
My heart ached.
I remember Joseph saying that she had a hard time in public.
Damn it!
I crawled out of the space as I searched for Newton.
Finally, I found the Orange suit looking frantically in places she would never be. Newton looked in small cabinets hoping to find her.
"Newton...I found her," I say in a solemn voice
"Where!?" He asks concerned as I lead him to the small space
"I'll wait out here," I say as I don't want to see the scene again.
The orange suit disappears into the hole.
A few minutes pass.
And he comes out with her body.
"We should arrive home tomorrow," he says as I nod
He carries her over his shoulder as he heads to the medical room.
"I'm sorry," he suddenly says
"I shouldn't have assumed it was you," he finishes
"Yea," was all I could say as he sets her down
"I know she had a problem. She asked me to keep it silent...and it got her killed," he says in his own sad voice
He sits on the floor as he leans his back against the wall.
He starts curses under his breath
"We started with 8 people...and we are coming back with 2," he says as I nod
"If only I coulda seen it...it'd be 3 returning," he mutters
"Yeah looks like we are both to blame," I say
We both looked at the Cyan suit in silence. Of all the death on this ship, Olivia was the only one not directly related to the parasites.
"You know...my wife was gonna come," Newton says suddenly
"I'm glad she didn't," he says
"Thank god for pregnancy," he finishes with a forced laugh before going silent
We sat there for hours in silence
The only reason why Newton left the room was because he had to attend to the comms.
I was left in the room as I ponder.
Was it true that Olivia liked me?
I guess I'll never know
Of all the deaths that happened...I think hers was the most preventable one.
Eventually, we landed at home.
I don't remember much, but I do remember a bunch of people engulfing the ship as they haul us out.
I stood over an open coffin, displaying a gorgeous woman. Her skin was pale, but I guess that what's happens when you're dead. Olivia Stevens was written on the top. And more coffins were further down that housed the other bodies that we had recovered
Just before they buried Olivia's coffin. I placed a hand on it
"Thank you for this gift," I say as I hold a fake leaf, the same one she gave to me.
I felt a hand on my shoulder as I turn around to see Newton.
He was a thin man with blonde hair. Beside him was his wife
"Any plans to go to space again?" He asks
"Yeah...at least I plan to," I say as he smirks
"You and me both man," he says as his wife puffs her cheeks
"I thought I told you no," she says as he smirks
"I'll be fine," he says as they start arguing. A friendly argument though.
I smile as I turn to leave.
I look at Olivia's coffin one last time
"Cya," I say as I hold the leaf
"I'll never forget ya," I mutter as I walk away
(A/N): Ok, for those who voted, the choice that won was to keep the book going. The shorter option would have seen Olivia stay alive and we get together with her...but as I wrote the part I couldn't help but think what would be the aftermath if this happens. And now that the main arc is done, I can say a few things. First off, the main love interest was supposed to be Kelly...and then I started writing Olivias character and I liked her more. And well...we all know what happened to Kelly. But now that both of them are gone...I wonder who will step into the spotlight...anyway, hope you enjoyed the first part of this book
