Chapter 5
"Jamie."
Jamie groaned.
"Jamie." Katie snatched away Jamie's pillow.
Jamie groaned louder.
"Come on, it's 9 am already. Wake up."
"Mean friend..pillow compromised.."
"What? Look, Sam, Dean, and Kayden are all in the other room. We could use some help researching."
"Ugh. Fine." Jamie slowly got ready and followed Katie into the Winchesters' room. Sam was sitting at a table in the room with a laptop, with Katie's laptop in a nearby chair. Kayden was staring at some old-looking leather bound books. Dean was cheerfully eating french fries on one of the beds.
Looking up as Jamie and Katie entered, he said, "Hey guys."
"Guten morgen, Dean," Katie said.
Sitting on the couch and turning to face the others, Jamie asked, "So, have we found anything? About Lilith and Wrath, I mean." Looking at Katie, she added, "You explained Wrath, right?"
"Yeah."
"No, not much. There was a possible sighting in Nebraska, but it's a really slim chance." Sam responded. After a second, he said, "Oh wait, no. Nevermind. No, we have nothing."
Jamie sighed. "Awesome." Looking at Katie's computer, she asked, "Why are you looking at 'ghostyspirity.com'?"
"I'm looking into a possible case."
Kayden looked up quickly. "What? Katie, you need to be looking into these demons!"
"Yeah, we kind of already have a case here," Dean said, looking at Katie with confusion.
"Just because a hunter has death on the horizon doesn't mean the monsters stop attacking."
At this the room fell silent except for the sounds of Dean eating his french fries and Katie typing on her computer.
"Ooh!" Katie exclaimed. "It looks like an angry spirit named Damian Sentine has been showing up around here."
"I hate that that's exciting for us." Jamie sighed.
"None of us seem excited except Kates," Kayden commented dismally.
Katie sighed. "I'd like to live out my last days with a purpose, okay?"
Dean nodded. "Yeah, that's understandable."
Jamie glared at Katie. "It's not the last of your days, okay? And Dean, shut your face." After a pause, she added. "Sorry, Dean."
Katie grinned mischievously at Jamie, earning herself more glares.
Looking back at her computer, Katie went on, "Anyway, it looks like 'Damian Sentine', who died 25 years ago, has supposedly started showing people their worst fears and making them panic until they hyperventilate, their heart stops, and they die."
Sam laughed quietly. "That's a new one."
Jamie opened her mouth to respond, but froze, her eyes fixed on the ground to her left. "Uh, s-speaking of worst fears," she stuttered.
Under her horrified stare was a crack in the floor of the motel room, through which large amounts of spiders were crawling, approaching the group in a black mass.
Dean stood and moved to get a better look. "What?"
Jamie slowly took a step backward, then turned and ran to Dean, screamed, and leapt into his arms. Caught off guard, Dean dropped her, only to elicit more panicked screams. Jamie stumbled to her feet and climbed onto Dean's back, all the while screeching.
"Not a fan of spiders?" Dean asked, looking extremely uncomfortable.
"Can we leave this room please?" Jamie hissed, her eyes fixed on the approaching arachnids.
Kayden tilted his head and squinted at the spiders. "I've seen those before."
Katie had risen to her feet and grabbed her computer bag on instinct. "Where?"
"Um..in a book of..poisonous spiders."
"Go go go go go!" Jamie screamed, clinging harder to Dean. Katie ran over and opened the door, shoving Dean and Jamie through. Sam and Kayden ran through also, Katie slipping out last and slamming the door. She turned to Jamie.
"Hey, hey Jamie, look at me." Katie said, walking over to her and waving to get the terrified girl's attention. Jamie whimpered slightly, sliding off Dean's back and into Katie's arms, clinging to her best friend.
"S-spiders...spiders everywhere..." Jamie whispered, her voice muffled by Katie's shoulder.
"I know, I saw them. But they're not here anymore. They can't hurt you," Katie said in a reassuring voice, rubbing Jamie's back gently.
Jamie looked at the door over Katie's shoulder. "What's..oh god, why?" She screeched and bolted across the motel parking lot. The spiders had started emerging from under the door.
Following at a slower pace, Sam pulled out his EMF meter, saying, "Hey, I wonder.." The contraption immediately started whining and buzzing. "Katie, what was that you said about, uh, Damian Sentine?"
"He..oh. Looks like we have a fear ghostie on our hands."
Jamie was running in circles now, yelling, "Is there one on me? I think there's one on me!"
Katie grabbed her friend as she passed. "Easy, Jamie. You're fine. There isn't a spider on you." Behind Jamie's back, she gestured for someone to flick away the small, flailing black creature stuck in Jamie's hair.
Kayden made a face, but quickly got the spider away from Jamie and smashed it underfoot.
Jamie slowly calmed her breathing. "So, a fear spirit," She gasped. "As if we didn't have enough on our plate already."
Sam gave a small smile. "Let's just move away from--" He cut himself off, freezing as he looked behind Jamie.
"Sammy?" Dean asked, looking at his brother with concern. The group turned to witness a clown emerged from the bushes. Sam's eyes widened and he turned and tried running. Kayden and Dean grabbed his arms.
"Sam! Listen, it's not real! It's just a ghost screwing with you!" Dean said urgently.
"These just keep coming, don't they?" Jamie muttered.
"Just breathe. Um, don't hyperventilate." Kayden said. Sam looked back, his expression calming slightly.
"You're afraid of clowns?" Katie asked, tilting her head and looking at Sam with interest.
Sam ignored the question and blinked repeatedly, taking small, short breaths.
"We need to go," Jamie said, backing away from the approaching clown and spiders. "Library, maybe? To research this dude, or something?" Everyone nodded in agreement and piled into the Impala. Dean started it up, and the quintet drove to the local library. They had just parked before Sam slumped forward in his seat.
Dean looked over and noticed. "Sammy?!" Dean shouted, grabbing his shoulders and shaking him. Katie swatted Dean's hands away and put her fingers against Sam's neck, waiting in a tense silence.
"I..I'm not getting anything."
Dean froze. "What did you just say?"
"I.."
Dean stared in shock at his brother. "No..Sam, no, not like this.."
Jamie looked at Dean and rubbed his shoulder awkwardly, trying to calm him, as it was clear that this was his fear. Then she blushed and quickly stopped. After a moment of horrible silence, Katie breathed a sigh of relief. "It's back now. It just flickered, I guess."
Dean closed his eyes and looked down momentarily before uncomfortably clearing his throat and leaving the car. As Jamie and Kayden exited the car, Kayden held the door and asked, "Katie, you coming?" Katie shook her head.
"I'll wait 'til he wakes up," she said, putting a hand against his forehead as if to check for a fever. Kayden raised an eyebrow and Jamie barely smothered a laugh, but Katie's brother gruffly slammed the door and went into the library. Katie sat back with a sigh. She waited for a few minutes, before leaning forward again.
"Sam. Sa-a-am," she said in a soft, singsongy voice. "Sa-a-ammy." She drew out the first syllable of his name, reaching forward and tapping incessantly on Sam's shoulder. A bolt of courage filled her. "I have a crush on you," she whispered, heat creeping up her cheeks.
Sam chose this moment to wake up, causing Katie to leap backwards.
"What? What happened?" Sam said, looking around.
"Nothing! I didn't say anything!" Katie said quickly.
What she didn't know is that Sam had heard every word, and was doing a little happy dance inside.
The pair sat in uncomfortable silence before Dean opened the door and climbed in. "We have the gravesite," Jamie stated.
"Yeah," Dean said, once again starting up the car once everyone was inside. "Let's gank this S.O.B."
When they arrived and piled out of the car, Katie froze, focused on the sky. Or rather, on the horrific flying monster in the sky. It resembled something like a goose dressed in hideous prom attire, with the wings of a moth. To most of the group, the monster looked ridiculous, even somewhat amusing, but to Katie it was the most horrific creature she'd ever seen. She began backing away, and the others simultaneously realized just whose fear this monster was.
"Katie? Remember, it's not real," Kayden began, touching Katie's shoulder gently. This, however, did not help. Katie screamed bloody murder and dropped to the ground. She clung onto Kayden's leg, still screaming.
"Okay, so you guys do your thing, and I'll try to fend it off?" Kayden suggested, talking loudly over his sister's screams. Jamie pulled out a gun and shot at the monster, causing it to flicker out of view. Katie continued screaming until Kayden nudged her. She blinked and stood up, her face red with embarrassment.
"Say nothing about that, and you won't die," Katie said stiffly, avoiding eye contact with the rest of the group. Dean, quietly chuckling, opened up the trunk and pulled out a stash of shovels. He passed them out, but only had four.
"I'll stand guard and let you know when I think Damian has shown up," Kayden offered. Katie nodded, then slumped over, falling on Sam, who jumped but managed to catch her.
After a pause, Kayden said quietly, "I think Damian's shown up." Sam nodded, awkwardly trying to hold Katie upright. Kayden gingerly pulled her out of Sam's arms, looping her arm over his shoulders. Just as she was released from Sam's grip, Sam looked dazed and fell over backwards, directly towards Jamie, who was focused on her friend and ended up being crushed.
Kayden felt for a pulse and paled as he found none. The monster flickered back into view, and a clown emerged from the bushes. Small black objects began falling from the sky, and Jamie screamed when she realized they were spiders. Dean hauled Sam up, and Kayden pulled Jamie while still half-carrying, half-dragging Katie.
As the 60% panicked, 40% dead group reached the grave, Dean trembled and set down the limp Sam, picking up his shovel and beginning the process of digging. Jamie was screeching and sprinting in circles around the gravestone, using her shovel as a spider umbrella and occasionally stopping in an attempt to help, but failing. Looking back at Kayden, Dean yelled, "So are you gonna help, or just stand there?"
"I'm a physicist!"
Dean gave him a look of extreme annoyance. "Kayden, help me or my little brother and your baby sister both die!"
This made Kayden start forward with a shovel after carefully setting down Katie and brushing a few fallen spiders off of her. Both frantically started digging. The clown had reached Sam and was kicking at his 'lifeless' body. The moth-prom-goose was circling Katie. The spiders, however, were all swarming towards Jamie, who had stopped screaming after one had fallen into her gaping mouth. Jamie now leapt into the hole Kayden and Dean were digging, hiding under her shovel.
"Helpful," Kayden sighed.
After a while, Kayden and Dean reached the coffin. At this point, Jamie had long since passed out. Dean slammed his shovel into the wood, splintering it. He and Kayden quickly exposed the body and climbed out of the hole, spiders, clowns, and monsters still tormenting their unconscious fearers.
With a shaking hand, Dean poured salt and gasoline over the bones and threw down a match. As the body incinerated, the fears followed suit and disappeared into flames. Sam gasped and sat up, looking around. Kayden turned to his sister, but Katie hadn't moved.
"No." Kayden said softly. Jamie groaned and opened her eyes, sitting up. Her eyes fell on Sam, then Katie.
She blinked, then her eyes filled with tears and she shook her head numbly. "But.." Jamie trailed off, unable to face the truth, but unable to lie to herself. Just as she was about to break down, a noise filled the cemetery.
"I LIVE!" Katie boomed, slowly sitting up with her arms out like a zombie. Everyone stared at her in shocked silence before Jamie lunged and elbowed her hard in the gut.
"That wasn't funny!" Jamie shouted in her face, trying to be angry despite the fading distress and utter relief she felt washing over her. Katie groaned and held her stomach.
"Okay, bad joke." Katie said, rubbing her side and standing up shakily while brushing herself off. Jamie pulled herself up using Katie, and Dean helped Sam up.
"Back to the motel?" Kayden asked after a silence in which everyone's heads slowly stopped spinning from all the chaos. Everyone agreed tiredly.
Once back at the motel, the group collapsed in Sam and Dean's room. Katie lifted the side of her shirt up to her ribs, revealing several purple marks.
"Kayden, did your nightmare include me having bruises that look like the little dipper, or was that mine?" She asked exhaustedly.
Kayden shrugged. "I'm guessing yours," he said, watching Katie heave herself up.
"I'm going to see if I can do anything about these," she announced, going to the bathroom. Kayden nodded as she left, then sighed with relief and turned back to the rest.
"I thought she was never going to leave," he said in a deeper than normal voice. He stood and his eyes flickered to black and back again. Jamie reacted quickly, but only was able to lift her hand before she was frozen in place. Dean and Sam leapt to their feet, only to have Wrath do the same to them. The room was completely silent again, as the demon waited for Katie to return.
"So, I traced the lines, and apparently-- oh crap." Katie said, entering the room.
"How nice of you to join us, sweetheart," Not-Kayden spat in a sickeningly sweet voice. Katie glared furiously, but didn't make any moves to attack.
"Wrath. You already have my soul, and you'll have my life in less than a week. What more do you want from me?" Her voice broke on the last sentence.
"Tsk, tsk. Someone must be having a bad day," Wrath said in a mockingly sympathetic tone.
"I was dead less than an hour ago. The little dipper is bruised into my side, and I'm pretty sure you plan to kill my friends and brother if I don't do what you want. Yeah, sounds like a bad day to me," Katie spat.
"Would you rather I do this tomorrow, then, sweetheart?"
Katie sighed, defeat prominent on her face. "Whatever you plan to do, just leave them out of it. They never did anything. Do whatever you want to me, but so help me if you touch them at all I will not hesitate to trap you in me again and put a gun in my mouth."
Wrath tilted his head. "I see someone's a bit desperate."
Smiling, Wrath threw Kayden's head back, his smoky essence pouring from his mouth. The smoke curled around Katie, consuming her from the feet up, giving her just enough time to throw a desperate, pleading glance at Jamie, still frozen, before both Katie and the smoke dispersed, leaving nothing but the faint smell of sulfur.
Kayden gasped as he and the others were freed from the demon's grasp. They all looked at each other with anguish, trying to find answers in one another and finding none.
Jamie fell to her knees and curled into a ball. "Not her," she whispered. "Not Katie."
