Chapter 4
"Way to crush the moment." Jamie said groggily to Dean.
"And we aren't staying here all week." Sam said. "I just exorcized a bunch of angry demons over the intercom of a building and scared the crap out of a desk lady. I think that's plenty of action for this city. So..where do you two want to be dropped off?"
Katie ignored the question and nodded. "Okay, that's magical, dude. Just saying."
There was an awkward pause as the brothers and two friends looked at each other. Finally, Dean said, "Hey, Sam, can I talk to you for a second?"
Sam nodded. "Sure." They both walked away and started talking quietly.
Katie tilted her head, watching them go. "That was a little weird."
Jamie nodded, then cleared her throat. "But it was good timing, because I've been wanting to talk to you too."
Katie sighed. "We can figure out the soulless thing later, I-"
"Uh, no. Actually, it's about Sam and Dean."
"Oh. Yeah?"
"Well..maybe we should stay as partners with them. For a while, I mean. Not, like, forever. Necessarily." Jamie shifted her position as Katie eyed her.
"Why are you being so..I don't know, awkward?"
"What? I-I'm not."
"You just stuttered.
"So? People stutter..sometimes."
Katie continued looking at her friend, a smile playing on her lips. "You..Jamie, do you like one of them?"
Jamie jumped. "No! I just met them. Stop being stupid. I mean, that's so unlike me, and..okay, maybe a little, but if you say anything I'll kill you. Slowly."
"Fine, fine! We can suggest staying partners with them."
Jamie nodded, and turned as Sam and Dean approached them again.
"So, uh, I know I just talked about dropping you two off, but, uh.." Sam trailed off, and looked to Dean to finish for him.
Katie rubbed her face to hide a smile as she noticed Jamie wringing her hands behind her back.
"We were just thinking that we made a pretty good team, so..maybe we should..stay a team." Dean said, looking between Katie and Jamie.
"I thought we made a pretty good team too, so I'm cool with that," Jamie said, looking pointedly at Katie.
"Fine by me."
Dean nodded. "Well, uh, good!"
There was another uncomfortable pause before Jamie said, "Um..is anyone else hungry?"
Dean grinned. "Yeah, always."
The four breathed inward sighs of relief as the awkwardness passed. The group entered the car and Dean started driving towards a nearby fast food restaurant.
Sam grimaced as Dean parked. "'Donny's Diner'? Seriously?"
"Hey, they say they have pie." Dean said.
As the group entered the building, Jamie glanced back at the car and asked Dean, "So what kind of car is that, anyway?"
"1967 Chevy Impala." Dean said proudly.
Jamie nodded. "I'm not, like, a car person or anything, but it seems like a cool car. At least, compared to our crappy truck thing."
Dean smiled, but before he could respond, Katie started furiously tapping Jamie's shoulder.
"What, what, what?"
Katie pointed. "Isn't that Kayden? That's Kayden!"
Jamie looked at the person in question, then nodded. "Yeah, that's him. What's he doing here?"
"No idea!" Katie said, running over to the man. He was tall and lanky with very short dark hair and glasses.
"Uh, are we missing something?" Dean asked.
Jamie turned back to the brothers. "Oh, that's Kayden, Katie's older brother. He kind of helped her become a hunter and stuff." Jamie paused. "Actually, he'll probably be super pissed with me when he finds out she's soulless."
Jamie headed over to join Katie, followed by Sam and Dean.
Katie stood a few feet away from Kayden, shifting back and forth. Jamie caught up to her, asking, "What is it?"
"I don't know. I'm afraid that if I talk to him, he'll get dragged into this mess."
At that moment, Kayden glanced over and noticed the group.
"Katie?" He rushed forward and hugged her. "How long has it been? Are you okay? Wait, you have the right number so you can call me, right?"
"A month, yes, and yes, I just haven't had a chance to call you."
Just then Kayden noticed the brothers standing behind Katie and Jamie.
Looking at Sam intensely, he asked, "Katie, is he your new boyfriend?"
Katie and Sam's eyes both widened and Katie blushed slightly. "Kayden, no. That's, uh.." She cleared her throat uncomfortably. "That's just Sam Winchester, and his brother Dean."
Sam smiled awkwardly.
"Oh." Kayden said. There was a pause, then another man walked up, just coming out of the bathroom. He was tall, but by far the shortest man among them. He had curly light brown hair and glasses, just like Kayden. He blinked at the group.
"Kayden, how did you find two hot chicks in the three minutes I was gone?" He asked, grinning. Jamie took an exaggerated step away and Kayden gave him a deadly glare. Dean grimaced and hid a small laugh.
"No. Do not speak of my little sister that way," he growled. The other man's eyes widened.
"Wait, is that little Kates?" He said, eyes widening. Katie groaned.
"Okay, one, it's Katie, two, yes, hi Sean, and three, I am not little!" Katie snapped.
Jamie stifled a laugh. "You're kind of little."
Kayden winced, smothering his own laugh as Katie turned her burning gaze on him. "Okay, not everyone is lucky enough to be tall as the Empire State Building," she growled, glaring up at him.
"Well, she's still as gentle and kindhearted as ever, I see," Sean chuckled. Katie groaned and looked at Sam.
"Save me," she pleaded. Sam shook his head in amusement, lifting his hands in a 'don't look at me' manner.
"You know what, I don't need any of you. I can go save my soul myself," she said, freezing right after the words left her mouth.
"Katie. Please tell me you meant that figuratively," Kayden said stiffly.
"Oh, uh, sure.." Katie laughed nervously. Kayden turned to Jamie.
"I thought I could trust you with my sister," He said in a quiet, deadly tone. "Now, somebody better tell me what happened,"
Katie sighed. "It..it was my fault. I put my trust in the wrong person. Well, not a person, really, but..I trusted the one thing that I never should have. Ever."
"A demon," Jamie said, no accusation in her voice. "She trusted a demon. A demon who had possessed her for as 'long as she can remember'."
Katie picked up the explanation. "Things escalated until there was a gun pointed at Jamie's head and I was left with a choice: Jamie or my soul. It was pretty easy from there. Well, easy, but..painful." She chuckled drily.
Kayden sighed deeply. "Great." After a pause in which Sam and Dean exchanged glances after hearing the full story, he said, "Well, I'm coming with you on this 'soul hunt', whether you like it or not."
"Kayden, no." Katie said, glancing at Jamie.
"I am, Katie."
Katie stared at the ground, then at her brother. "Fine, but once this is over, please just go back home. I don't want you to get sucked into this."
Behind Jamie, Dean leaned over to Sam and whispered, "Well, this is uncomfortable."
"Yeah," Sam whispered back. "Are there five of us now, or..?"
"Yes, there are five of us," Katie said, turning and facing the brothers, who looked surprised. "What? You whisper loudly."
"Okay, y'alls have fun with that. I'm seeing an exit cue here, so see ya." Sean said, winking at Jamie and Katie as he walked away. He received no reaction other than blank stares.
"Okay, so that happened," Jamie said after a moment, rubbing her forehead. "Let's just pick up the food and head to a motel. I'm exhausted."
The newfound group of 5 quickly got food and headed back to the Impala.
"Can I ride shotgun?" Jamie asked.
Dean opened his mouth to answer but was cut off by Sam. "No."
Surprised and mildly amused, Jamie got in the back seat.
After arriving at 'Lucky's Motel', the Winchesters and Kayden each bought their own rooms and split off from the other two. Jamie and Katie walked into their room, located next to Sam and Dean's.
Jamie let out a small, tired laugh. "These walls have..sparkles on them. And there's a third switch for neon lights. Where did theyfind this place?"
Katie shook her head, collapsing on the nearest bed. "I don't know."
Jamie started towards her bed, then paused. "It's pretty obvious, you know."
Katie sighed, eyes closed. Muffled by the stained blanket on the bed, she asked, "What is?"
Jamie laughed, and imitated a girly voice. "Who you like."
"Shut up, I don't like anyone. I hate everyone. Die."
Jamie giggled, then stopped. "Did I just giggle?"
"Yes. Let's talk about giggling instead."
"No! No, you're into Sam. I can tell! It's so cute."
"I am not. By the way, this conversation could not possibly get any more high-schooly."
"How would you know? You never went through high school. At least, you never went through a full year at one school."
"Whatever."
"But Katie, guess what?"
"What?"
Jamie paused and grinned again before saying in the same girly voice, "I think he likes you too!"
Katie grabbed a pillow and hurled it at Jamie. "Shut up! You know, you like--"
Katie was stopped by a hand pressed onto her face. "These walls are thin!" Jamie hissed.
"Dean." Katie finished through the hand.
In the neighboring room, Sam had just finished brushing his teeth and was getting into his bed. Dean had already collapsed face first on his, but was now slowly sitting up and brushing glitter off of himself.
"What is this place, a 70's strip club? Why do we never stay in a freakin' normal motel?"
Sam shrugged and lay down, staring at the ceiling.
Dean looked at his brother for a second, then grinned and shook his head slightly.
Sam noticed. "What?"
"You've always been such a baby."
Sam sat up indignantly. "What?"
Dean stopped brushing off glitter to look at Sam again. "Come on, if you weren't already thinking about becoming a team with those two, you wouldn't have agreed so quickly."
"Yeah, they're good hunters, Dean! Besides, you're the one who suggested it, and I know it wasn't because 'they would be a good asset'. Dean, you don't even use the word 'asset' unless you mean something else."
"Sure I do!"
"Fine, give me one example of a time when you used that word normally."
Dean was silent for a second, then said, "Shut up."
Sam laughed incredulously and lay back down, turning off the lamp next to him.
They were both silent for a while, but neither were sleeping.
Finally, Dean rolled over and said, "It's Katie, right?"
"Oh come on, Dean."
"Answer the question."
"I..well, if I had to choose between Katie and Jamie, yeah, it would be Katie."
Dean chuckled. "Adorable."
"Again, you asked!" Sam paused, then said tentatively, "You, uh..you're not gonna say anything to her, right?"
Dean burst out laughing.
"Shut up!"
Between laughs, Dean said, "No Sammy, I won't tell your crush you like her."
"Oh, real mature."
Once the two had calmed down, Sam tilted his head, then looked interestedly at Dean. "Wait. Did you ask me that to make sure I wouldn't say Jamie?"
"Don't be stupid, Sam. I was just..making sure I was right."
"Yeah, sure. You were all ready to be jealous, weren't you?"
"Sam."
"Don't say I'm a baby when you team up with them just so you can.." Sam laughed before continuing, "be around her more often."
"Okay, enough! Sleep. Now."
