Chapter 3
Jamie turned to Sam. "So, have you guys found out anything about Lilith? Specifically, ways to make her give up select souls?"
Katie tilted her head. "Can't I just stab her 37 times in the chest and eat her hands?"
Sam gave Katie a disturbed sidelong glance. "Um, not without being killed in some horribly creative way."
Dean glanced back at Katie as an idea popped into his head. "Hey! Want to know my word of the day?"
Sam grimaced. "Oh no.."
Katie looked warily between the two. "Sure..?"
"Long pig!"
Sam groaned.
"It..it means human flesh." Sam explained. Katie made a horrified face.
"Eww! What the heck is wrong with you?!"
"This is why we don't share our word of the days, Dean!" Sam said.
Katie's face lit up as she remembered. "Hey Dean, want to know my word of the day?"
Dean turned up the music. "Sure."
"Pachyderm!"
Jamie burst out laughing. "That is a good word of the day."
"See Dean, that's what normal word of the days are like!" Sam said.
For a moment, Jamie realized with surprise how well she and Katie were getting along with Dean and Sam. Then she decided to steer the conversation back on track. "Okay. All we know about Lilith is that she has white eyes instead of black ones and she likes to possess little kids. Is there anything else we should know?"
"She can break your neck with a flick of her wrist." Sam said.
"Oh. Delightful!"
Sam smiled tightly and pulled a dusty leather book out of his bag, flipping it open. Katie leaned forward and read over his shoulder. "Lilith is sort of Lucifer's special agent, so she has a lot of powers to help release him. Basically, she's just really powerful, and all the other demons treat her like a demon-goddess."
"Oh. Okay!"
"So why did Lilith choose to show up here, anyway?" Katie wondered.
"There's a seal here." Dean said.
"A seal? Um..why do we care about seals right now?" Jamie asked, looking at Katie.
"Not the aquatic animal, bro. Lilith has to unlock 66 of these special seals to start the apocalypse." Katie clarified.
"Oh. That kind of seal."
"Yeah. She's broken way too many already."
"So did you two have any plan to waste her? 'Cause we don't." Dean said.
"We were going to try the colt, I think," Katie said. Jamie winced as she remembered that Dean and Sam had been wanting the colt.
"You're the ones with the colt?" Dean said with a hint of surprise.
Jamie watched him cautiously. Hunters had been known to kill each other for such precious artifacts. Luckily, all he said was, "Not bad. Good job covering your tracks, anyway."
"Um, thanks."
"Guys?" Katie asked.
"What?" said Dean.
"Um..look up."
Sam looked up, his eyes widening. "Dean, pull over."
Dean looked upward, reacted the same way, and pulled over.
Seeing the huge cloud of billowing demon smoke, Jamie nodded. "Yep, we found her. Let's go."
"Well, that was lucky." Jamie said.
The newfound foursome jumped out of the car. Dean opened the trunk and pulled out the arsenal of demon repellers that he had acquired over the years. "Do you two know how to handle a gun?"
Jamie pulled a shotgun out of her bag. "We're hunters. Of course we do."
Katie pulled out her pistol. "But my aim sucks monkey butts."
"Let's go," Sam said, heading towards the doors.
Jamie and Katie followed the two men up to the front desk of the building, where they were stopped by the desk attendee.
"Hello ma'am," Dean said. "Uh..my partner and I are..uh, FBI agents. We are bringing these two very traumatized young women to the top floor for questioning." At 'very traumatized' Dean looked meaningfully at the two friends to tell them to act the part.
Katie and Jamie exchanged an elated look. Jamie began shaking and crying quietly, hugging Sam's leg, causing Sam to look extremely uncomfortable. Katie plopped onto the floor, spread her arms wide, and screamed at the top of her lungs, "I like turtles! They are nice! And..fluffy!"
The lady at the desk stared at the two girls, who were barely concealing their laughter. "Wouldn't that make them..uh..more nervous?"
Jamie climbed onto Sam's shoulders and started stroking his hair. Looking even more uncomfortable, Sam said, "Uh..no, as you can see, heights actually calm these two down."
Dean showed the woman his false FBI agent ID. As she examined it, Jamie screamed and leapt down from Sam.
"Turtles!" Katie screeched.
Jumping, the woman handed Dean back his ID. "Okay, go ahead then."
"Thanks," Sam said leading the group to the elevator with a crawling Jamie and a crab walking Katie bringing up the rear. As soon as the doors closed, Jamie and Katie burst out laughing.
Sam rolled his eyes. "That was a little overdone."
Katie grinned and adjusted her glasses, which had become lopsided from the crab walking. "It was fun though!"
After a short time, the elevator doors slid open with a 'ding'.
"Okay. Now how do we find out which ones are demons?" Katie asked quietly.
"Easy," Jamie replied. "Just be traumatized."
Sam and Dean both nodded in understanding and scanned the room.
"Cristo!" Katie and Jamie giggled in unison.
Every person in the room turned with angry black eyes.
Dean stared for a second, then said, "Okay, time to run."
As the group turned to go back to the elevator, the doors slammed shut. Dean swore, slamming his finger repeatedly on the button.
Pressed against the doors, Katie started breathing hard. "Bad timing. Bad timing. Very, very bad timing."
Jamie grinned and walked to the front of the pack of enraged demons, turning back with milky white eyes. "Hello Dean. Back from the dead again, I see."
Katie's eyes widened.
"Oh no.." Sam said.
Katie's face twisted with rage. "No. Freaking. Way. GET OUT OF MY FRIEND."
Lilith twirled Jamie's hair, giggling. "Silly goose! Why would I do that?"
Katie attempted an attack but was only pressed harder against the elevator doors by Lilith's power. "Nice try," Lilith smiled.
Katie went limp. "No, no, no, no, this is not happening. Make it stop. This is a dream, this isn't happening.."
Lilith giggled again, twirled in a circle, and sang, "A dream is a wish your heart makes when you're fast asleep.."
Dean shook his head. "Holy crap. You are so creepy."
Katie was shaken out of her stupor. "Did you just sing Disney?"
"Silly, demons can have fun too!" Lilith responded happily.
"Not if I can help it." said the deep voice of a man that appeared next to Lilith in a tan trenchcoat.
Lilith looked over at him, smiling. "Well hello, Angel of the Lord Castiel. How nice of you to drop by for our tea party!"
'Angel of the Lord Castiel' tackled the demon, putting his fingers against her forehead. White light began to shine out of Lilith, but it disappeared as she threw him off and kicked him halfway across the room. "Learned some new tricks, I see." She said, approaching him.
Katie was frozen in horror as she watched the scene unfold. Sam looked over at her, realizing Lilith had lost her demonic grip on her.
"Katie! Grab the colt and shoot! NOW!"
Katie jumped at the sound of her name, then leaped for the colt and clicked off the safety. She aimed, tightening her grip and preparing to squeeze the trigger, then suddenly stopped. "Wait, what am I doing?"
"You're stopping the apocalypse, you idiot! SHOOT!" Dean screamed.
"I..did I just consider killing my best friend?"
"You don't have a choice!" Sam said urgently. "Do it!"
Lilith and Castiel were whirling around in their fight, their attacks punctuated by flashes of white and red-orange light. The surrounding demons were launching themselves at the invisible wall that the angel was somehow maintaining.
Katie was in such a state that she didn't even process the fact that angels were apparently not fiction.
Katie dropped the gun. "I can't. I-- I can't shoot her."
Dean screamed again. "You've GOT to be KIDDING me!"
Just as Dean finished his sentence, Castiel yelled, "Close your eyes!"
The room was filled with a blinding flash of white light, all of which was bursting out of Lilith. Castiel's fingertips were pressed hard against her forehead, his face contorted in effort. After a few seconds, the light exploded into nothingness, bringing the man with it.
Sam and Dean flew away from the wall. Dean looked up. "Cas?"
Sam ran over to Jamie and threw her over his shoulder. "I don't think she's dead. He just sent her back down to Hell. Unlike all these other demons!"
"And EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM IS PISSED NOW!" Dean yelled as the elevator doors slid open.
Sam nodded, but Katie was quivering with rage. "No. Way. I am so done with these stupid DEMONS!" With that, she launched herself into the crowd of stunned demons, a whirlwind of punches, bites, and kicks. She managed to take a few down, but soon she was swarmed by the violent black-eyed beings. Dean grunted angrily.
"Why do I always have to risk my life for idiots?"
He launched himself into the crowd, snatching Katie and bolting away with her and numerous cuts. "Go, go, go!" He screamed, barreling past Sam and into the elevator. Sam leaped inside, slamming his finger down on the button for the lowest floor. The heavy steel doors closed just as the fastest demon made a flying leap. The group was spattered with blood as his hand was smashed.
They sat in shocked silence until the doors slid open again at the bottom floor. The ragged, now bloody bunch trudged out the doors, capturing the confused and horrified stares of everyone in the lobby.
As soon as the door to the Impala slammed shut, Katie let out an enormous sigh. "So that..happened."
"No thanks to you," Dean snapped. "Because you didn't have the guts to pull a damn trigger, Cas is probably dead."
"We don't know that." Sam said quietly.
Katie glared at Dean, then hissed like a cat. After recovering from his surprise, Dean slapped her.
"Dean!" Sam said, shooting him an angry glance.
"I fricking hate cats." Dean muttered.
"And cats hate you," Katie replied, rubbing her cheek. "Ow."
"Guys?" Jamie tentatively asked, now awake again. "We just survived a full-on demon attack and prevented the apocalypse, at least for now. Can we not fight, please?"
"Sorry, Jamie." Sam said, looking pointedly at his brother.
Katie looked down at her feet. "Hey, Dean?"
"What?" Dean responded, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Thanks for saving my butt."
"Your welcome," he responded. "I'm here all week."
