Chapter Forty-Two
In the plan, I was sent off with Bruce and Val to set up the distraction as Thor and Loki worked on getting us the ship. It was going well, we got Korg and his friends armed and they started the revolution Sakaar was in need of.
Now, we waited in the sky in Val's ship for Thor to make his escape. It was a bit of a weird silence, but we all just sort of... sat around and waited for anything.
I had started to pick out some of the crud from the plates in my hand when Val suddenly lurched forward and I nearly went tumbling to the ground. "A warning would have been nice," I commented as I got back into a comfortable position.
"Sorry, Soldier, but he's got some crap on his tail that we need to get rid of," she said back, barely glancing over her shoulder. I went with the nickname, not really caring since I had given her one.
We flew around and shot stuff down, Bruce beside her congratulating her on hitting things. "Nice shot!" he yelled over the noise.
"Thanks," she said back and continued on. She did a few taps on her headrest then said, "Open the doors." I figured she had talked to Thor.
We flew under Thor's ship- The Commodore I heard her call it- and the top of her ship opened.
"I hope you're tougher than you look!" Val yelled over at Bruce.
He looked confused, but smiled. "Why?" Her answer? Pressing a button that ejected him up and out.
Then she looked back at me. "You'll be fine," she said. When she pressed my button, I was ready and had a pretty solid landing up in The Commodore.
Bruce gaped at me for a second. "You look like a badass!" he yelled. I just smiled.
The ship was suddenly hit and we rocked around a little. "Shouldn't we be shooting back or something?!" Bruce yelled in panic as he carefully made his way up to Thor.
"I agree, it might make our escape a bit easier!"
Thor mumbled something, then started to look around and press buttons. "Where are the guns on this ship?" he asked and continued pressing things.
"There aren't any! It's a leisure vessel. He uses it for his good times, orgies and stuff!" Val responded over the radio. Well, it's a hologram thing so I don't really know what to call it.
"Did she just say orgies?" I asked, instantly disgusted. I pulled arms into my sides and looked around at everything with a grimace.
Bruce stumbled up to Thor and asked the same thing. Thor looked equally disgusted and said, "Yeah... don't touch anything..."
I moved my way up to the front of the ship as well and took a cautious seat in the other chair as Bruce stayed behind Thor. We maneuvered around, doing our best without any kind of defense systems and watched as Val was doing her thing.
"She's pretty badass," I said as we watched. Thor and Bruce nodded.
Suddenly, her ship was hit. We all reacted with gasps, and then yells when the whole thing erupted into flames. I hadn't known her long, but I still felt a pang when I saw the ship go down like a fireball into the building below.
It was short lived grief, however, because a figure came flying from the ship and landed on the outside of ours. We smiled at Val being alive. But now we have no guns.
"Get inside!" Thor yelled at Val as we got shot at.
To our surprise, she looked back and yelled, "In a minute!" We watched as she stood up and ran backwards.
It took me a moment, but when I heard some crashes I put it together. "Is she... is she taking the ships out on her own? Like, no ship, just her and a sword?" I asked. "Again: badass."
Thor thought for a second. "I should probably go and help," he said and started to get up. "Here- take the wheel!" he called to Bruce.
The man in question panicked instantly. "No, I don't know how to fly one of these!"
I was just glad I wasn't the one who had to fly.
"Use one of your PhDs!" Thor called as he ran to the exit of the ship.
"None of them are for flying alien spaceships!" Bruce yelled back. It was no use, because Thor jumped out to land on a ship below us.
I looked at Bruce and he looked over at me. "We can figure this out, yeah? I believe in us... yeah..." There wasn't much, but I had some faith we could do this. It was a very small amount.
"Okay, okay, you're doing great!" I encouraged. "Just do what you saw Thor doing! It can't be much different than driving a car or a Quinjet!" I said. Bruce gave me an incredulous look.
But, he did well. The wheel was pretty much like a steering wheel, so he was able to move around rock formations and things like that. I continued to encourage him just so we would stay less stressed- didn't really feel like seeing the big guy right now.
"You got this! Hard left!" I called out over the noise. The number of guns firing at us was going down significantly as Thor and Val took the ships out. "You drive, I'm going to press buttons and see if there's a gun on this thing."
Bruce nodded, but then paused. "Wait, be careful because we have no idea what this stuff does!" he warned.
I ignored it, though, and pressed some buttons on the control panel. None of them were doing anything significant, but I saw a large button with a picture of a blast on it. "Bruce, press that big one! It looks useful," I offered.
He hesitated a little, but then pressed it. What we weren't expecting was the hear the Grandmaster singing "It's my birthday!"
I looked around and saw holograms coming up of him and heard fireworks blasting off behind us. "Well, that wasn't the kind of blast I was expecting," Bruce commented as he continue to fly towards our exit.
Even if it wasn't what we were expecting, it ended up working out pretty well. I heard ships exploding as they ran into things and sooner than I expected, Thor and Val were back up in our ship.
"Guys!" Bruce calls out. "We're coming up on the Devil's Anus!"
Thor and Val come up behind us with Thor going behind Bruce's chair and Val behind mine. Bruce skillfully avoided all the junk that was raining down as we went to the portal. "Let's switch out," Val said before we entered the portal-looking thing.
Bruce got up quickly, relieved to no longer be flying the craft. I was a bit sad to relinquish my chair but I also realized Thor was a much better copilot considering he had better knowledge.
"You guys have fun up here, I'm going to sit in the back," I said and moved to a spot in the back of the ship I had found. I had already come to the conclusion I would have to take around 500 showers after being in this ship so I didn't really care about where I had to sit.
There was a small room with a table and some chairs around it, so I took one of those chairs and sat down. There were so many thoughts on my brain, but the biggest was how was I going to get home. I had left so abruptly. Everyone must be panicking.
"Hey, you okay?" I looked over and saw Bruce coming in and sitting down across from me. "Well, I mean, I can already tell you're not, that was just my invitation to talk about it."
I chuckled at him and then sighed. "I just... I want to get back to Earth. I left pretty abruptly and I've got unfinished business down there," I said. With Bruce, I didn't want to get into the circumstances of how I ended up here. He might not agree with my thoughts to get rid of the abilities. He'd want to study them and figure them out.
Bruce smiled at me. "I kind of understand it, you know, considering I disappeared rather suddenly with some unfinished tests. You know very well what I mean. But I can't help but think there's more to the story..." he trailed off.
"Damn you and your observing skills," I mumbled, loud enough for him to hear. He laughed at that one and I smiled. "All joking aside, I really hate how you can tell there's something more. I guess you are a scientist after all- it's in your nature."
We sat in silence after I finished talking. Bruce wanted me to continue, but I wanted to ignore it and deal with it later. It's a favorite strategy of mine. When he went to say something, some rather violent jolts nearly caused us to go flying.
"Hold on!" Thor yelled at us from the front. As if that wasn't what we were already doing. We gripped our chairs.
It was a strange feeling. I almost felt like energy was being pushed through me at high velocity, which I figured was what was actually happening. My body rattled and I squeezed my eyes shut. Bruce let out some noises of discomfort until finally it went black.
