Chapter Forty-Three

"Rey, get up!"

Then I was jostled.

I tried to push the person away but they continued to shake me and yell in my ear.

"Would you stop yelling in my ear," I groaned and slowly opened my eyes.

It had been Bruce trying to get me to wake up. He looked relieved that I was awake and finally moved out of the way. "We made it," he said. I looked at him, then stood up and moved to the front of the ship to see out the one window we had.

And there it was, it all of it's glory. The palace was glittering in the light and it almost distracted me from the dark grey plumes of smoke that rose from the city around it. I tore my eyes from the palace to look around the city below to see buildings on fire and destruction all around.

"I thought it'd be a lot nicer," Bruce commented. I rolled my eyes and smacked his arm. "Not- I mean, not that it's not nice, it's just it's- it's on fire..." he explained.

"Smooth," I whispered to him.

Val wasn't paying any attention anymore and had moved on to find something else. "Here, up in the mountains." She pulled up a hologram of a mountain with a giant red dot in it. "Heat signatures, people clustered together."

"The Asgardians," I concluded out loud.

"She's coming for them," Val continued. A new, green dot appeared and showed it moving towards the red.

We needed to move and get all the people out quickly, which wouldn't happen unless Hela was distracted. Something Thor was thinking about, trying to come up with a plan.

"Drop me off at the palace and I'll draw her away," he said. It wasn't a suggesting, it was the plan.

We didn't agree. "And get yourself killed?" Val asked.

"I don't think this is the best idea here, Thor," I added on. Bruce nodded and verbally agreed with me.

"The people trapped down there are all that matter," he said. "While I'm dealing with Hela, I need you three to help get everyone off Asgard." This was an issue considering the amount of people and the size of the ship.

"How the hell are we supposed to do that?" Bruce asked.

Thor, looking straight ahead as if trying to see something answered, "I have a man on the ground."

Not quite the issue at hand here, but we would certainly try our best with the 'man on the ground.'

We landed shortly after and Thor went off to grab some things, telling us to wait while he did. I was going to go back to the table room but Bruce stepped in front of me. "Seriously, Rey, what's going on?" he asked. It was a long shot, but I was hoping he had forgotten what we were talking about before we went through the Anus.

"I don't think this is the best time to talk about it, Bruce. We've got some shit coming our way and that's what we need to focus on," I said. My attempts at moving on weren't successful.

"You can trust me with anything, you know that," Bruce said.

And I did know that. He was one of the first people to truly try and talk to me. He showed me kindness when others wouldn't and didn't care if I was 'dangerous'. I'm very lucky to have him as a friend but even so I couldn't bring myself to tell him about everything that's happened over the past two years. All of the things weighing down on my shoulders were too much for him right now.

I smiled and nodded. "I know, Bruce, of course I do. But this is something that will have to wait. Trust me on this, please."

He wanted to say more, but stopped himself and nodded. "Okay. But you have to promise me we will sit and talk after all this is done. You owe me that much," he said.

I nodded once. "Promise. We just need to get through this first, then we can hash out the last two years."

A loud clatter to my right cause my head to turn in that direction. Thor had come back with a large gun, arming the ship against Hela and her evil gang she's no doubt gathered by now. I turned back to Bruce and ignored Val and Thor's conversation.

"I can't wait," he said. He then turned to look at where Thor and Val were. He walked over to them and I followed in suit. "Are we good to go?" he asked her and she nodded.

Bruce gave a wave to Thor, then ran over to the front to get the ship back up in the air. Val yelled out a 'don't die' before joining Bruce. As the ship began to rise, I smiled to Thor. "We can do this, right?" I asked. He nodded. "We can do this."

I stepped back from the opening and got the gun upright to get it ready for use. Speaking of... "Hey, Val, I don't quite know how to use this!" I called out.

She came over to me and took over control of it. "Don't worry, I can take care of that part. You need to focus on getting people in while he flies and I look out." I agreed with the plan and went to sit up next to Bruce.

"This is really weird," I say randomly as we fly over to the mountain. Bruce looked at me questioningly. "Being on another planet. Well, our second planet of the day actually. Space was never one of my interests so this whole thing is just weird."

Bruce laughed. "Totally. I mean, after New York the thought of space was intriguing, but never in a million years did I expect to find myself in it on planets and in realms with other creatures. It's amazing and terrifying."

That was very true. "Makes you wonder what else is out there, you know? If there's anything else we need to look for," I mentioned.

He gave an almost humorless chuckle. "There's always something to look out for in this line of work. Vacations don't exist, even in the galaxy," he joked.

While we may be laughing, it was very true. There would always be something or someone out there and we'd find them every time. There's always a bone to pick when you fight to protect people. Earth, I guess at this point.

Hearing a clanging noise, Bruce and I look behind us to see Val all dressed up in a new outfit, getting the gun loaded and aimed. She posed for a moment then looked back out the opening.

"We better find them before Hela and her crew do, otherwise they'll get to deal with her," I called out.

We raced towards the Bifrost, where the people had gone, and saw them all trapped on it. On one side, a ginormous dog was racing towards them. On the other, an undead army.

"Let's go!" I called to Bruce, and then looked at Val. "You better be ready."

She just smirked and loaded the gun with a satisfying click. "Never been more ready in my life, Soldier," she responded. Deciding to get on the same page, I got up from where I was sitting to stand by the opening with Val.

The second the dog started charging the people, Bruce flew by and Val shot down at it. I was on standby, ready with my powers or to jump out and help. He stopped right over the Bifrost and Val was able to continue hitting it straight on.

I watched as the Asgardians ran away. When the last person was out of my sight at that angle, I looked out the other opening behind Val and her gun to see the large crowd halting once more.

The undead army was coming for them and they had nowhere to go.

I turned to Val. "This is my cue!" I called over the gunfire. Then, I saluted Bruce before jumping out of the ship and landing between the Asgardians and the undead, who were being led by another Asgardian. I struck a pose similar to Nat's and had a second of nostalgia wave over me.

It was only a second, though, because there was no time to waste with the Asgardians' safety in the balance.

"Heimdall! The sword!" The leader called out. I had no idea who he was referring to. I thought the name was familiar, a friend of Thor's, but didn't have the care to see who responded.

No one ever did, however, so the man signaled for the undead to rush forward. I balled up some energy in my fists and got to work taking them down. Letting out battlecries, the people of Asgard came to my sides and joined the fight.

Their swords clanged with the armor of the undead as my blasts tore through them. That wasn't alway enough, considering their state, so I pushed a few off the side as well to ensure they'd get out of the way.

I continued fighting, unable to see the end of the enemy. They kept swarming and I almost thought they were climbing out of the water and back onto the bridge- there were so many.

There was an angry, loud, familiar roar from behind me, on the other side of the crowd. For a moment I floated upward and turned around. The Hulk was squaring off against the dog. I was barely able to watch the two go flying off the bridge before something else caught my eye.

The ship that Val was still in was getting attacked by the undead. My eyes widened and I flew over quickly to try and help her out. She was up at the front know, trying to figure out what to do.

She flew around sporadically in an attempt to fling them off. She almost succeeded with me. I help on tight enough with one hand and used the other to send the soldiers flying off with energy blasts.

In my haste to get the disgusting things off the ship, I didn't realize Val was crashing it through some columns on the Bifrost until it was too late.

"Shit!" I yelled and used both my hands to grip onto the outside of the ship. We landed on the Bifrost and skidded down a ways before coming to a halt. My head was fuzzy and my body ached with the crash landing. My vision blurred for a moment after I blinked and I felt like throwing up.

After regrouping for a few seconds, I stood up to see a huge ship had arrived, and the Asgardians were boarding quickly. This was their escape. I thought I made out another person on the bridge when suddenly, a huge flash of lightning hit the palace straight on. It was so large and bright, I wanted to cover my eyes. If I had, I would've missed Thor coming out of it, surrounded by the glowing electricity.

With a newfound energy, I jumped off the ship and landed close to Val as she was exiting. Fireworks started coming out of the ship as we walked away, meeting the undead halfway. We started fighting them, slicing off heads and tearing holes through their middles.

"This is so badass!" I called to Val over the sounds of the soldiers being killed. I did a sweeping motion with my arms and cleared about twenty of them off the Bifrost.

Before, I had been trying to conserve energy for a long fight. But now, with Thor down here literally crackling with electricity, I knew this would be over soon. I started using my powers to pull the undead off the bridge and throwing them into the rough waters below. If I saw too many surrounding an ally, I took them out and away as well. This was almost looking winnable.

"We're actually doing this!" I yelled again, and Val laughed at that. After I threw another soldier away, I looked to find the next one only to see there weren't any left. The next living thing I saw was the crowd of Asgardians getting onto the ship.

"Let's go," Val said, gripping her sword tightly. We hurried down the Bifrost, moving through the crowd of people and to Thor and Loki.

"When did Loki get here?" I questioned to myself. He must've brought the new ship and the allies.

As we approached, we heard then conversing. "This isn't over," Val said as she hurried by them. She was right, of course. Hela was still alive and this would never end until she wasn't.

Panting, we lined up across the Bifrost to make a barrier between Hela and the Asgardians. She was walking towards us, slowly but surely. Her helmet of horns adorned her head and she didn't even bother to glance at the fallen ones around her. Hela's focus was us. Well, killing us.

"I think we should disband the Revengers," Thor said.

I scoffed. "Great timing on that one," I responded.

Loki pointed at her and said, "Hit her with a lightning blast."

"I just hit her with the biggest lightning blast in the history of lightning and it did nothing," he snapped.

We were covered in silence for a moment as she drew closer and we had no plan. "We just need to hold her off until everyone's onboard," Val said.

Thor, however, shook his head. "It won't end there. The longer Hela's on Asgard, the more powerful she grows. She'll hunt us down," he said.

"Oh now that won't work." I shook my head and added on, "We need to kill her here and now. I don't want to add more people to the list of 'who to look over my shoulder for'."

"So what do we do?" Val asked. The question was valid but I didn't have an answer.

Loki turned to Thor. "I'm not doing 'Get Help"," he stated. Val and I gave him looks, but then my focus shifted to Thor who had taken a few steps forward.

"Asgard's not a place, it's a people." He turned back to us and gave us the answer: Ragnarok. The destruction of Asgard- the place- and how that should take Hela with it. Loki went off to retrieve Surtur's crown to start the end. We were to stay and hold her off until Loki completed his task.

"Shall we?" Thor asked and looked at Val and I.

I smirked and nodded as Val said, "After you." We turned back to Hela and got ready to fight and hopefully not die.
