Chapter Forty-Nine
The fight had been raging for what felt like hours but had really only been minutes. I was up in the air, doing whatever I could to help that didn't take too much energy. Because Natasha was so right when she said they would need it later. If I had to face Thanos again, it wouldn't be when I was exhausted and near dead. I would show him who I am.
Rhodes and Sam were dropping bombs towards the entrance to take out more and more at once. I help there as well. Until Big Guy knocked Rhodes out of the sky. "Rhodes!" I yelled and narrowly missed getting knocked down myself.
I glared down at the two aliens, the Children of Thanos. Then, I looked around. Everyone was getting overwhelmed. "No," I whispered. This could be my moment to help but it would take nearly everything I had in me.
Since I couldn't do what I wanted, I did what I could. I threw balls of energy at the dogs and tried to lift them through the air. The way they fought me was hard to contain. These things were insane and thrashed about violently.
As I was focused on some of the alien dogs, something grabbed onto my foot. I let out a gasp when I was suddenly pulled down to the Earth and hit the ground hard. I wasn't even given a chance to try and recover before I had a pile of alien dogs on top of me, all trying to rip me to shreds.
Letting out a small scream, I created a small bubble around me to try and hold them off. They kept clawing at the surface and trying to break through. I squeezed my eyes shut and grit my teeth together.
I might not make it to Thanos after all.
Then suddenly, they were gone. I opened my eyes and looked to see nothing on top of me. I released the shield I had created and stood up, only to find a beam of light in the center of the field.
Out from that light came Thor. He was holding a brand new weapon, an axe with lighting sparking all over. To his sides, he had a raccoon and a tree. Both were strangely sentient in a human way and I didn't think I wanted to know the details. It didn't matter, because Thor was here.
He charged toward the army of alien dogs, shouting a war cry: "Bring me Thanos!" With a running start and a giant leap, he brought his axe down and took out hundreds of the alien dogs at once.
I could only watch and catch my breath. This is who we needed right now and I was so glad to see him in a better state than what I had left him in.
There was a moment of no fighting so I jogged up to him. "Thor!" I called out. He turned around and stop sparking just in time for me to crash into him, pulling him into a hug. "Oh god I am so glad to see you."
When I let go, he smiled down at me. "As am I, Rey. But we can't claim victory yet. There is still a fight to come." We looked back over at the Children of Thanos and the new wave of alien dogs coming.
"Right, we'll talk later," I said and felt my hands heat up with the energy appearing in them.
More came, and more died. I fought hard at his point still conserving my energy but, at a point, I couldn't anymore without becoming a watcher to this battle. I ended up on the ground fighting off the alien dogs with the others.
It was a grueling fight and I had been getting my fair share of cuts and bruises. Letting out a battle cry, a group of the dogs were flown back and killed by Thor and his new axe. I was able to take a breath and that I did.
A rumbling from under my feet caused me to pause, and I listened carefully. It was in the Earth and it was getting closer. I flew up into the air to see where it was coming from.
Trees outside the dome were being run over by something. I watched as a huge thing under the ground came underneath the dome and then burst above the ground. My eyes widened and I knew this was something I had to do.
"Run!" I yelled to the others below, barely making sure they heard me before I read toward the machine. But then, it broke apart and there were multiple. To the side I saw another coming underneath the dome.
"Shit," I mumbled and decided to only focus on one of them. I came to the ground in front and threw my hand up in front of it. Orange energy was surrounding the contraption and I was able to lift it up into the air.
I let the energy flow through the machine, finding every crack and tearing it apart until it was no long functioning. When it was a useless piece of junk, I flung it at a large group of alien dogs that were getting a little to far away for my liking.
A few seconds later, I felt something else hit the ground. I looked over and saw Wanda on the field and pieced together that she had taken care of the other machine.
But then, "Guys, we got a Vision situation," Sam alerted from above. I looked at Wanda and both our eyes went wide.
"Somebody get to Vision!" Rogers yelled.
"I got him!" Bruce called out and I saw him fly over.
"On my way," Wanda said, but then let out a cry of pain. I looked over in time to see her tumbling into a ditch the machines had made with the female alien right behind.
Nat, Okoye, and I followed right behind and got ready to fight. "She's not alone," Natasha said. The alien looked at the three of us before she went after Nat.
Okoye and I hurried around to be right at her side, fighting off her sword and dodging every sweep of her foot. Dirt was flying everywhere and chatter was filling my ears but I wasn't focusing on any of it.
A wheel from a new machine came rolling over and we all ducked. As I was standing back up, a foot connected with my jaw and I went flying backwards. I landed hard and struggled to get back up. God, I was so tired.
Nat stood back up to fight her until Wanda used her powers to pull the alien off of Nat and threw her up into another one of the wheels.
We all sat back and let out huge breaths for a moment. Nat looked over at us and I grimaced at the blue blood on her face. "That was really gross," she said between breaths.
I could help but laugh lightly at her comment. We sat for just a few more seconds, but then we remembered the situation at hand. "We better get to Vision," I said. Wanda froze for a second, and then nodded.
With some help from each other, we all got up and out of the ditch and started to make our way to where Vision was- the woods by the trees. "How's the Vision situation?" Nat asked through the comms.
Rogers gave a quick reply of, "Okay for now. We need to se if we can get him back up in that lab and finish removing the stone."
Wanda and I looked at each other and had a silent conversation go through, where we agreed we'd both get him back up there and get Princess Shuri to finish up what was started. Nat, Okoye, and Rogers would be the backup if anything went wrong. This might actually happen. We might actually get our chance to finish this.
We made it and Wanda ran right over to kneel beside Vision. "Are you okay?" she asked. They shared a looked, then Vision started to make pained yells. "What is it?" Wanda asked, more panicked.
I looked over and locked eyes with him before he looked to Wanda. "He's here," he said just above a whisper.
My body froze and I felt chills run down my spine. My jaw started to quiver and looked at Wanda as she turned to look at me. "We ran out of time," I said as tears made their way to my eyes.
I looked over at Rogers who was looking around, ready. "Everyone on my position. We have incoming," he said through the comms. Backup would be coming but it wouldn't be enough. I knew it.
"Oh god," I whispered and felt myself shaking. Knowing he was coming brought up so much worry in my stomach. What happened to Tony? Peter? Strange? Were they okay?
We all stood, looking around us. Sam, Nat, T'Challa, Okoye, Bruce- none of us were ready for it and I knew it. They might've known too.
The air felt wrong. Something felt wrong here. Bruce turned and I followed where he was looking to see a ripple in the air, a blue-ish color. It grew and grew until Thanos appeared and it dissipated around him.
I looked at the gauntlet right away and saw the glow of the green time stone, along with two others he didn't have before. "Oh my god," I whispered. He was here. We were out of time.
"That's him," Bruce said. As if it were't obvious. But the words still struck a chord of fear down inside me.
"Rey, you are going to be Wanda and Vision's last defense, got it?" Rogers said to me quietly. We all knew at the point the stone had to be destroyed. And poor Wanda had to shoulder that burden. "We'll deal with him until we can't okay?"
I nodded to him and was ready to position myself over by them. No sudden movements yet, however. Not until the fight began.
As Rogers got ready to fight, I stepped back and got ready to defend Wanda and Vision. Thanos stalked forward while the others did their best.
Sadly, against five Infinity Stones, it was almost useless. I watched as Bruce became air and then was trapped in a rock. Rogers was picked up and tossed to the side. T'Challa was punched to the ground. Sam's suit lost power.
Behind me, I could hear Vision getting Wanda ready to destroy the stone. I let them have their moment, because I knew it was hard, and only glanced back when the words stopped. She was doing it.
I turned back around to focus on Thanos and tried not to let my tears fall as I watched Rhodes' suit crush itself and basically re-paralyze him. Barnes went charging at him with his machine gun but was blasted back. Okoye threw her spear but it was stopped and was thrown back with Okoye. Nat charge forward but was stopped when jagged rocks pieced through the earth and trapped her.
Thor's tree friend tried to trap Thanos is roots, but they were ripped apart and left the tree in pain. Rogers came back up and put himself right in front of Thanos. He did hit after hit with the shields until he broke off, and Rogers had to grab the gauntlet and block it from doing anything. He yelled as he did it, until Thanos used his other hand and punched him in the side of the head. Rogers went limp on the ground.
Now, it was my turn.
"You," Thanos said and it shook me to my core that he remembered me.
"Me," I said back, then used both my hands to blast energy at him. The force pushed him back several feet until he could get the gauntlet up to stop the blast. I had a thought in my head- would it be possible to destroy a stone in the gauntlet?
That became my goal and I pushed all the energy I could muster to him. It pushed him back a little more. My heavy breathing turned to screams as I squeezed my eyes shut and prayed this would do something good. Anything good.
I felt him start to push back. My eyes snapped open and I saw he was able to push back against me and was getting closer. I panicked and tried to push harder. My throat ached with how much I was screaming but I couldn't stop at this point.
I'm so scared.
He looked furious as he got closer and closer. I tried to push him back again but couldn't go against him. I could see the power stone glowing vibrantly in the gauntlet as he pushed against my powers.
I was losing again, but this time I wasn't going to get a lucky escape.
Thanos was so close now and he knew I was scared. I could see the way he grinned. As I pushed the last bit of energy I had, he reached his hand forward and gripped onto my neck.
The orange energy disappeared as my hands moved to his giant hand to pry it off of my. I let out gasps of air and little 'no's as he squeezed the air from my throat and deprived my lungs. My legs were frantic, kicking and trying to hit anything they could, but I wasn't tall enough to reach.
The only satisfaction I had was seeing burn marks on his skin from my powers. At least I had done something to him.
Black dots danced in my vision. "Pity," he said. "Such power gone to such a waste." After those words, he squeezed even harder and I felt myself giving up.
Until a burst of something caused him to leg go of me and fly backwards. I laid on the ground gasping and coughing, trying to recover from the loss of air. My body was drained to the point where I couldn't move. I just stayed on the ground with my eyes closed trying to learn how to breathe again.
An explosion caused my to roll on the ground a few feet into a bush. The way I was positioned now, I could see what had happened. Wanda had done it. Vision was gone and Wanda was a mess on the ground. Thanos said some words to her, but I couldn't tell with the way my ears rang.
As I came to more and more, I saw what he was doing. Green now surrounded his gauntlet. "The Time stone," I said. Wanda and I watched in horror as Vision was pieced back together and the explosion reversed.
Once Vision was back in his entirety, Wanda got up and screamed, "No!" But Thanos just backhanded her, and she went flying back.
"Wanda!" I yelled out.
I looked back at Thanos in horror and watched as he picked Vision up by the neck. With his other hand, he gripped the stone and pulled it out of his head. Vision's body lost all color and his eyes went white.
He tossed Vision's body to the ground and then carefully placed the stone in his gauntlet. He let out a yell and I saw colors danced around his skin before disappearing. Thanos was looking at the gauntlet in awe when lighting came in and blasted him off his feet.
I saw Thor coming in and decided to crawl over to Wanda. "Wanda..." I croaked, knowing she had seen the whole thing. "Oh god."
There was a flash of light behind us and I dared to turn and see what it was. Thor stood before Thanos. I gasped when I saw the gauntlet, burnt to a crisp along with most of his arm.
"What'd you do?" Thor yelled, desperate, afraid. Rather than giving an answer, Thanos used the Space stone to create a portal and left, leaving the axle in his chest behind.
I looked around at Thor and everyone else standing around, waiting. Rogers looked at Thor, asking where he had gone. No one knew what was happening. What we we were waiting for.
"Steve?" I looked over at the source and saw Barnes trying to walk over. He turned to ash and dust.
My eyes went wide and I let out a shaky breath. I turned around and went to Wanda quickly, getting up to my feet and then collapsing again at her side. As I stood, my vision went spotty. I didn't know what was happening.
"Wanda," I said and held her in a hug as she looked at Vision's body in pain.
But then her arm disappeared and I looked over just in time to see her face become dust. "Wanda!" I cried. "No, no, no, no!" She was gone. My fingers could only grab onto the dust that she had become. Soon, it became mixed with the tears that finally fell from my eyes.
My breathing was labored and my vision was getting blurry from more than just tears. I was getting lightheaded. Is this what it's like to become dust? What would happen after?
I closed my eyes.
Darkness.
