Chapter Forty
Loki had assured me Thor was alive, but that was the most confirmation I had gotten. Ever since him and Hulk fought, and I left, I've been in my room. Sakaar is an awful place, a place where I wouldn't wish any enemy of mine to end up in.
I had known from the second I met him that the Grandmaster was a strange man, but this? He forced people and aliens to fight for entertainment, and then decides the winner anyway. It was awful, it reminded me too much of Hydra before the Avengers came about and attempted to destroy them all. The only difference was the aesthetic.
The view out of my window was nothing spectacular, yet anyone who came into the room would've thought otherwise. I had moved all the clothes to the ground and taken the chair so I could sit and look out the window. It was all I wanted to do because I sure as hell wasn't leaving this room. I wasn't going to pretend this is a high society party when it's really just a celebration of creatures dying.
I sighed and got up from the chair. The only other thing I wanted to do was relax in the little bath I had in my room. That and looking out a stupid window. Living on another planet was a blast.
The bath was always full of water, but also had a constant refill and drainage system set up. I didn't bother to figure it out, and just appreciated the fresh, warm water that I had. I hated Sakaar, but I would be bringing up the idea of a hot tub to Tony.
That thought made me pause. It was silly, me thinking I would be able to get off of this goddamn planet and getting back home. It's even sillier that I dare call the Upstate Facility home. Every second I spent on Sakaar was another second of me losing grasp on the life I should be living, where I have no more orange magic, no more trigger words, and no more governments hunting me down. I should be in New York, living at the Compound until I can get enough money together and a job so I could have my own apartment. I wanted to be normal.
Normalcy doesn't start on a trash planet.
As I started to relax in the water, an alarm started blaring through my room. My hands covered my eyes and I cringed at the loud noise. "Oh, fuck off!" I yelled out.
The alarm was replaced by a voice. "Sakaar, here ye." It was the damn Grandmaster. "Attention please. I have some bad news. My beloved exalted champion has turned up missing. Take to the streets. Celebrate my champion!" He kept going, but I just groaned and stood up violently enough to splash the water. "It seems that that criminal seductive Lord of Thunder has stolen him away!"
Whatever else he had to say fell on deaf ears as my anger grew. "I swear to god Loki or Thor has something to do with this. They better not do anything stupid especially with Bruce," I grumbled, drying myself off quickly and getting something to wear.
There was no damn way I would be able to put leather on right now with my damp skin, so I dug through the pile of clothes on the floor and found something I could work with. It was a one-sleeved dress colored black with hints of silver.
"My god, this entire wardrobe is the same color scheme. I hate this place," I commented. The dress, however, would have to work. It wasn't extremely fancy and I figured I could work with it.
I grabbed my armor, bundled up with one of the straps fashioned into a sort of backpack strap so it was easier to carry, and hurried out of the room.
As I was hurrying through different halls and corridors, I heard cheering and loud noise outside. At one point, there was a window I was able to look through so I did. People filled the streets, celebrating the Hulk, showing him all their love.
Part of me thought it was amazing. Earth was never Hulk's biggest fan. Okay, that's quite the understatement. But here on Sakaar, they loved him for who he was.
Except that was the murderous, giant green monster half. That was where the sentiment went out and my mission to find him or Bruce or whoever it was before anything bad could happen. I figured the best way to start was by going into the crowd, so that's what I did.
The 'palace' was strange and I struggled to find my way out, but finally came out on to a street. My senses were overwhelmed immediately as people cheered around me, bright colors flashed about everywhere, and all these different smells filled the air.
One of the things that sucked about having enhanced senses was when they got overloaded. It rarely happened to me so I didn't have a proper way of blocking certain things out. I thought I was going to explode from the overload, so I sat down and tried to just breathe.
My eyes closed and I covered my ears. Breathe. But it was so hard. Breathe, Rey. You got this, just block it out and breathe. I let my thoughts work and focused on breathing in and out. That was it. Just going in for five seconds, out for five seconds. Things faded away and I was able to open my eyes back up and not be overwhelmed by everything.
I stood back up and went about looking for Thor, hopefully with Bruce right behind. There were so many places to look- crevices, doorways, side streets, just behind large crowds in general- that I didn't think it would work.
But somehow, some way, I saw someone leading Thor and Bruce through the crowd. "Thor! Bruce!" I called out, grabbing all three of their attention. I had no real idea on who the woman was because I haven't met her yet, but Thor and Bruce looked so excited. Thor had some thing over his head? That was weird.
"Rey!" Bruce called back. He looked so happy and so relieved. I ran over and caught him in a hug. There was green powder in his hair and all over his face that got on my face, so I coughed lightly and blinked it away from my eyes.
We pulled away and I looked at what he was wearing. "Are you wearing Tony's clothes?" I asked, noticing the outfit wasn't exactly Bruce's speed.
He nodded and Thor came into the conversation. "I found the Quinjet that Bruce crashed in. When I tried to use it to get us out of here, someone destroyed it. One thing led to another, Bruce is here and he needed something and that's all that was there."
Bruce sighed and hung his head. "I am really sorry about that, but you know I couldn't do much at that point," he said, and I figured the Hulk found it first and then Bruce showed up. I felt bad for him and wanted to make him feel better, but also wanted to get out of the crowd.
"Is there a place we can go to get away from," I gestured around me, "this?"
The woman who I pretty much forgot about stepped in now. "Follow me and I'll take us somewhere away from this." Thor nodded and seemed to know her, so I followed behind him with Bruce at my side.
Who was firing off questions left and right. He used the fabric that was over Thor's head to wipe the green off, and quietly asked me questions. "What are those things on her eyes? Are those the people that she's killed? She's so beautiful and strong and courageous-"
"Who is this guy?" the woman suddenly asked, peeved with the constant questions.
The three of us spoke at once.
"I could ask you the same thing, so calm down."
"Uh, he's a friend."
"I'm Bruce."
She squinted at him as we went down a hallway. "I feel like I know you..." She trailed off as she thought.
Thor grabbed the fabric once Bruce was done with it and threw it behind us. "I feel like I know you too," Bruce remarked. I just shook my head and moved on.
The woman stopped at the very end of the hallway and did a 180 to face us. "Look, I've spent years in a haze, trying to forget my past. Sakaar seemed like the best place to drink and forget, and to die one day."
Thor hummed and added in, "I was thinking that you drink too much, and that probably was gonna kill you."
She didn't agree. "I don't plan to stop drinking," she clarified. It was awkward for a second, but she started talking again. "But, I don't wanna forget- I can't turn away anymore. So, if I'm gonna die, it may as well be driving my sword through the heart of that murderous hag."
"Good," Thor said. Bruce nodded.
"I'm going to be honest, here, I'm a bit lost. Hela? Are we talking about her?" I asked, obviously a few pages behind from where they were.
Thor nodded. "Yep, that's what we're talking about. I can explain more to you later," he offered and I nodded along.
We were quiet until she spoke up again. "So, I'm saying that I wanna be on the team," she said. "Has it got a name?"
Bruce and I watched, in varying levels of excitement, as Thor stumbled around a bit. "Has it- yeah, it's called the Revengers."
"Revengers?"
"Revengers?" Thor glared at me and I stifled the laugh that was forming.
He stopped and explained a bit, decidedly leaving out the bit on how it's sort of named after the Avengers. "Because I'm getting revenge. You're getting revenge. You- do- I- do you want revenge? Bruce? Rey?"
"I-I- uh, I'm undecided."
I shrugged. "I mean, there's not much else I can do so I guess, yeah, I'll get some revenge. Pretend to be pissed at her for ruining my plans for the day that was actually weeks ago... yeah sure," I said. Thor nodded and we looked back to the woman.
"Also," she said, her tone changing. "I've got a peace offering." I raised an eyebrow but no one said anything as she faced a door on the side.
It slid up quickly once she pressed a couple buttons. Once it was gone, the first thing we saw was a certain god chained up in front of us. "Surprise," Loki greeted. We all started to walk in, the woman going right immediately to a kitchen, Thor picking up a thing and hitting Loki with it, and Bruce and I hanging back just a bit but far enough in to let the door shut.
"Hello Bruce," Loki greeted. I wanted to laugh at how different Loki acted around Bruce versus the Hulk, but opted not to.
Bruce cautiously approached, and I was close behind just in case anything happened. "So, last time I saw you, you were trying to kill everybody. Where you at these days?" he asked. God bless him for trying to have casual conversation with Loki.
Keeping a straight face, Loki said, "It varies from moment to moment." Bruce quickly walked away and I just rolled my eyes at him and followed after.
I looked around the room more, talking in the white and green pattern on the walls. It was done in true Sakaar fashion, that's for sure. I just hoped to never see this planet again in all it's weirdness.
The woman was doing something in her little kitchen area and I finally decided to talk to her directly. "Okay," I said, grabbing her attention. "I have no idea what to call you because I have no idea who you are. I'd really like to refer to you as something other than 'the woman' though because that's just annoying to me."
"All right, well, here I'm known as Scrapper 142. Or as your beefy friend at the creepy one know, I'm also a Valkyrie," she said.
I nodded. "I have no idea what a 'Valkyrie' is, but I'm not calling you that scrapper mess, so we'll go with Val because that's short and easy," I said.
Val didn't comment on her new name from me, instead looking confused at what I said first. "You don't know what a Valkyrie is? You're not Asgardian?" she asked. I shook my head. "What are you then?"
"I'm from Earth, so human," I answered. She was confused at my answer, but didn't press.
I watched as she pulled something out and placed it on a table in front of Thor who asked, "Is that a Dragonfang?" Rather than questioning I just watched Thor get excited over it- fanboy is a term Nat taught me once, I feel that fits here.
It was then I remembered my armor in a bundle over my shoulder. "Hey, you got a place I can change in that's a bit more private than this?" I asked Val. She nodded and pointed off a bathroom in the corner. I smiled at her and went in, shutting the door and changing out of the stupid dress.
As I was getting the final pieces strapped on me, I heard glass shattering out in the main room. After a small pause, I quickly finished and hurried out to see the damage.
A surprised Loki was surrounded by shattered glass, and Thor and Bruce were staring at Val in shock. She just looked smug. "The Grandmaster has a great many ships. I may even have stolen the access codes to his security system."
"Great job, you've done something useful," I said, putting the pieces together pretty quick with what he said. We needed a good ship to get out and Loki knew how to get us one from the creepy old man.
Val, on the other hand, was rightfully skeptical. "And suddenly you're overcome with the urge to do the right thing," she pointed out.
"Heavens no," Loki quickly clarified. "I've run out of favor with the Grandmaster, and in exchange for codes and access to a ship, I'm asking for safe passage... through the Anus."
My eyes bugged out of my head. "Through the what now?" I asked, obviously not putting every piece into place.
"The Devil's Anus, it's the way out," Bruce explained to me. "Nice look by the way." I smiled brightly at him and refocused on what Thor was saying.
"...without setting off any alarms?" Thor asked.
Loki nodded. "Yes brother, I can," he said. I could see that Loki really wanted to get this to work, either because he had an ulterior motive or because he really wanted out of here.
Bruce must've been on the same page as me. "Okay, can I just," he whistled and made a 'circle up' move, "a quick FYI." We all gathered around him. "I was just talking to him just a couple minutes ago and he was totally ready to kill any of us."
"He did try to kill me," Val added.
"Yes, me too, on many, many occasions," Thor added.
"Well now I feel left out," I muttered.
Thor launched into a story. "There was one time when we were children, he transformed himself into a snake, and he knows that I love snakes, so I went to pick up the snake to admire it and he transformed back into himself and he was like, 'Blergh it's me!' And he stabbed me. We were eight at the time."
Bruce looked at a smiling Loki in horror, Val's shock was more contained, and I had to stop myself from laughing. They definitely had an interesting relationship.
Val decided to move on quickly. "If we're boosting a ship, we're gonna need to draw some guards away from the palace."
"Why not set the beast loose?" Loki asked. I rolled my eyes and glared harshly at him.
Thor and Bruce looked at him in mild alarm, Thor saying, "Shut up."
Valkyrie obviously didn't know the secret. "You guys have a beast?" she asked, excited.
Bruce and Thor muttered over some crap before Thor managed to say something. "There's no beast. He's just being stupid." He looked back over at a highly amused Loki. "We're going to start a revolution."
I looked at him. "Are we thinking of the same guy?" I asked. Thor nodded and I smiled, excited for Korg and Miek.
Bruce looked confused at us. "Revolution?"
"I'll explain later," Thor whispered to him.
Val looked at Thor. "Who's this guy again?"
"I'll explain later."
