Breaking in

Sorry this took me so long. I was having a writing block, but I have the rest of the story planned out so this shouldn't happen again.

Rem woke up to the smell of French toast, grabbing his sunglasses to shield his sensitive eyes from the small bit of morning light that Virgil allowed in his room. The coffee lover put on his sunglasses before standing up. "Verge, you 'wake?"

"Yes." The other groaned, digging his face into the pillow more.

"Patton made French toast, I think." Rem tried to lure Virgil out of bed.

"Tired." The emo complained.

"Fine, see ya' when you decide to move." Rem rolled his eyes, walking out to see all of the others huddled around a table, still in their pajamas.

"Rem, you're up! Where's Virgil?" Patton called out.

"In bed. Verge is not a morning person." The coffee drinker sighed, pulling a chair out.

"Give him five minutes, he'll be alive by then." Logan played with his fork.

"Yeah anyway, Rem, here's your French Toast." Patton nearly dropped the plate of sugary bread on the table.

"Thanks." Rem said, taking a bite of the food, continuing to eat as the others chattered amongst themselves.

"Did you know that we all are made of particles left over from dead stars? We're all made of star dust!" Logan's eyes were big and bright like they always were when he talked about anything.

"What if that's why we're soulmates? We were all a part of the same star!" Roman's eyes lit up in a similar fashion to Logan's.

"Unlikely explanation considering not all of us are connected to eachother." Logan shrugged. "But I do enjoy the idea of us all being soulmates because our particles were close to eachother when the Big Bang happened."

Patton suddenly gasped loudly, "Roman, you are a star, technically!"

"My god Patton, you're right." Roman did a dramatic move, placing his hand to his chest. "I, Roman, am made of stardust."

"What are you nerds talking about?" Virgil appeared.

"Verge, here's your food!" Patton placed a plate similar to Rem's, which was mostly eaten. "Did you know we're all made of stardust?"

"Yeah, it's everywhere on tumblr." Virgil rolled his eyes playfully. "People use it for inspirational post or aesthetics."

"That's so cool!" Patton nearly shouted.

They were all so upbeat and loud. Even Logan and Virgil liked to hear themselves talk. But Rem felt a little out of place amongst the others. He wordlessly got up and got some coffee before settling back to his spot.

The group continued chatting until Patton suddenly stopped. And everyone noticed this. Patton was the main person talking, so the volume dropped dramatically. This in turn made everyone stop talking and stare at Patton.

"What's wrong sweetheart?" Rem raised a brow.

"I just realized I forgot to get all of your presents." Patton cried out. "I need to go get the supplies!" He stood up and ran to get his shoes on.

"Patton!" Logan shouted. "You're still in your pajamas." The teacher rolled his eyes at Patton's sleep pants that were covered in pictures of puppies and cats.

"Oh."

"Get dressed, let's all go out." Roman suggested.

"No!" Patton yelled back. "I want to suprise all of you and if you ask me about it on accident it won't be a suprise."

"But we wouldn't know where you are." Virgil point out, his voice pouty.

"Patton's old enough to do what he wants. Do what you want, girl." Rem waved the other off.

Logan interjected, "But it is supposed to snow a lot today and I would not like to have Patton stuck outside, alone, in a snow storm."

"I could go." Rem suggested. "Pat can lie to me so no issues there, right?"

"Remy, you are so smart!" Patton shouted. "Alright, get dressed, let's go now." Patton turned around to his room, only to be pulled over by Virgil.

"Wait," Virgil looked Patton straight in the eyes. "People are going to be out and drunk or hungover if you go out now. Wait 'till after lunch."

"Okay, but that means we're going to be out late." Patton pursed his lips.

"Fine. Just come home." Virgil pleaded.

"Of course I will. I'm not going to leave my dark strange love." Patton stood on his toes to kiss Virgil's cheek, making Virgil go red and flinch slightly.

"Good." The emo averted his eyes to the floor.

And Rem had never seen such a cute interaction in his life. Patton and Rem got dressed after that, the coffee lover in a hot pink shirt that had "Slay Queen" written on it in white cursive. While Patton wore a pastel blue shirt with a white heart in the center of his chest.

The day continued without much incident, leading up to the time when Patton and Rem would be out. The two left the house around one, and got into Rem's black car.

"Where to first?"

"The crafts store." Patton bounced in his seat, putting his seat belt on just like Rem was.

"Where's that?"

"Here, just listen to the directions." Patton plugged some words into his phone until a mechanical female voice started to talk and give directions.

"'Kay." The coffee lover hummed, follow the instructions of the phone, turning on some music while they traveled. They got to the craft store in less than ten minutes.

"We're going to need a bunch of cardboard, sharpies, markers, pens, and paper. Oh, and a note book!" Patton grabbed a buggie, walking it to the area with all of the scrapbook and art supplies. "What's your favorite color?" Patton raised a brow.

Rem simply pointed at his bright pink shirt. "Take a guess, sugar." Patton laughed lightly before grabbing a few packets of pens.

They continued to shop until Patton had everything he needed. Rem still had no clue what the other was getting him. He could guess it was going to be something like a card or something else like that, and would definitely be sappy, but he had no idea on the specifics. Which was a victory for Patton.

"So, are we going to the house?" Rem raised a brow, turning on the heated seats to keep them warm from the snow outside. It was starting to pick up.

"Nope." Patton dangled a key in front of the coffee lover's face. "I may have taken Virgil's key to the pet store." The look on his face was unlike an other Rem had ever seen on Patton, devilish and playful, though still so Patton.

"Which way?" You could hear the pure joy in Rem's voice. After a few giggles Patton gave the directions to the place.

Elliot would have closed up shop by now considering the snow and the late hour, so they would be there alone. With the animals.

Patton quickly unlocked the doors, creeping into the place filled with cute animals. Once they both got in, they flung themselves at the area with the dogs. Not the area with the puppies, but the mild mannered dogs that wouldn't yap all night about a person being in there. Because that would not be good for the two that were sneaking in.

"Hey midnight." Patton called out to the black dog, going to his knees to pet the large one. "Who's a good girl?" He cooed.

"Well, hello precious." Rem sighed, running his hands through the blonde fur of a smaller dog.

"That's Goldie. She's a usually really hyper." Patton lowered his brows, staring at the mellowed out dog. "Huh." Two other dogs went to crowd around Patton, making the smaller giggle so much that midnight left to go sit next to Rem.

"Hey, girl." Rem waved, placing a hand on Midnight before running his hand through her black hair. The black dog settled in and leaned on Rem, letting the coffee lover pet her.

Rem pet the two dogs while Patton gave a brown dog cuddles, holding him close as he held onto the large and proud dog hugs. It was adorable and frankly, made Rem's heart soften to mush. Right now he just wanted to grab Patton's hands, pull him close and kiss him.

What?

No, he couldn't be thinking that. They're not soulmates. If Patton was supposed to fall in love with him then surely the universe would have given him Rem as another one of his soulmates. If Rem allowed himself to fall for Patton then he would end up disappointed, because it would never work out. So, push that emotion down onto the ones that were nothing like it. Stress and sadness underneath a sweet and happy feeling like Patton.

Suddenly, Patton's phone went off. "Hello?" He quickly called out.

"Patton, where are you?" Was yelled through the line. Patton pulled it away from his ear, then back.

"Don't yell. You'll scare the puppies. I'm at the pet shop where Virgil works." Patton pouted.

"Do you have any idea how scared we all were? Virgil has been jumpy since you left and he was nearly in tears when you didn't make it home for dinner. I was about to call the police before I remembered I didn't call you yet. We all texted you a million times." Logan continued to rant. "And you aren't supposed to be at the pet shop. That's illegal Patton."

"I know!" The smaller shouted back through the phone, scaring the dogs away from him. "I didn't have any idea how scared you all were. I'm going home now."

"Don't!" Logan sighed before continuing. "It's storming outside, if you go now you'll get hurt. Just... Stay there. May I talk to Rem for a second?"

"Yeah." Patton sighed handing the phone to Rem.

"Hey..." Rem called out.

"Move to the other side of the store from Patton. I don't want him to listen in." Logan gritted through his teeth. Oh, this would be fun... Rem was doomed.

After the brunette moved to the front of the store, he answered, "'Kay, away from Patton." He braced for the screams he knew Logan could force on his ears.

But, Logan's voice returned to its normal low. "Take care of Patton next time. You both could have died. Virgil's not doing well because he thought two of his soulmates died. He's in a bad place because you couldn't look at the sky or the time. Learn from your mistakes, because I won't let you do this again. Here's your second chance. Use it. And don't make this time any worse than it already is."

"Got it."

"Alright, give it back to Patton."

Rem did as instructed and gave Patton the phone.

"Hey, Lo." The smaller whispered.

"Be careful. We all love you. I'm going to give phone to Virgil now. He's scared for you."

"Okay."

"Patton?" A low voice called out from the other side.

"Hey, Verge! How you doing? I'm okay... Rem's fine too... Sorry for scaring you, kiddo."

"I'm not okay. God, I wish I could lie to you." Virgil groaned. "I hate my imagination... I kept on thinking of every way you both could h-have died and..." Sniffles came from the other end, making Patton frown deeply.

"That's why it's snowing... Maybe," Patton said quietly in fake realization.

"What?" Virgil asked through tears.

"An angel's crying..."

"Dork." Virgil laughed, and Patton could feel the other's blush from five blocks away.

"Hey, Verge, it's late. You should get to bed..." Patton hummed.

"Can you promise me you two will be okay?"

"No. But I promise that I love you. Don't worry about us. Have Logan calculate the probability of us dying. I bet you it will be..." Virgil started to laugh before Patton even finished the sentence. "Infinitesimal."

"Alright, just don't do anything this dumb again. My heart couldn't handle it." Virgil sniffled again.

"When," Patton put all the focus on that word. "I get back, I'm going to hug you for eight hours."

"You mean you want to cuddle."

"Yeah."

"Okay. You need to go to sleep too. There's some cover in the back. Make sure to get out before seven. Sloane and Corvan get there at about that time and C won't hesitate to call the cops." Virgil sighed. "Be careful."

"I will. I love you, Virgil! Good night."

"Wait, Pat. Can I talk to Rem?"

"Sure."

And once again, the phone was passed to the coffee lover, as Patton went to grab the cover.

"You 'Kay?"

"Yeah, girl. I'm doing fine." Rem responded.

"Alright, anything you want to tell me?" Virgil sighed.

"Not that I can think of."

"Okay, that's all. Bye, Rem. Let me speak to Patton." The smallest place three covers on the floor.

"Bye, Angel." Rem replied, handing the phone to Patton.

"Verge?"

"Night, Pat. Have good dreams. I love you."

"You too, my angel. I love you. Bye." Patton finally hung up.

The two rolled themselves up into two of the covers then noticed that they didn't have a pillow. They could use the other cover as a pillow, but it would only work for one person.

"Let's share a cover!" The smaller suddenly shouted.

"Ya' sure?"  Rem asked, uncertainty clear in his voice.

"Yeah! We could cuddle." Patton shouted, before pulling back. "If you want. I could go and sleep with midnight if y-"

"Nah, I'm good. We can share a cover, sweetheart." And Rem found, he didn't really mind sharing a cover with just Patton. He didn't mind cuddling with Patton.

Patton put his glasses on the fence, along with Rem's, while Rem made the "bed". They moved so that they each had a cover pillow and were sharing the same blanket. Patton scooted closer until he was practically glued to the other.

"Is this okay?" Patton questioned.

"Yeah, girl. It's fine."  Rem moved his hands to around Patton's waist.

"Good. Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite." The smaller hummed.

Patton's bright eyes closed as he went to sleep, his face was littered with freckles that looked like stars. His nose was one that fit a doll more than a person, but was just so cute on him. It was unreal.

It was in that moment that Rem realized he had fallen in love with someone who wasn't his soulmate. He had one thought after his moment of realization:

F*ck.
