Chapter Ten
The next day a grey pickup truck with a single driver pulls up in front of the house, and honks a couple times. Katlyn goes and wakes the others. Groaning awake they grab the gear they brought with them from the safehouse, and exit the house. Serena is the first to the truck when the driver makes a jokes calling himself, Resistance Taxi Service. They mount up into the truck, some having to ride in the box of it, and return to the Red Zone and New Town. Katlyn sits in the box with Kelly and Maya, the bumpy road and paths take are painful for Kelly, groaning from the discomfort. Katlyn finally having a minute to think process everything that's happened lately.
The last few days I've almost been blown up, arrested, and shot at on two separate occasions, and killed someone. Nothing about my life has been normal recently since meeting Serena. There's no getting out of this now, is there? No, not with blood on my hands now. Guess there's only one thing I can do.
The group arrives at New Town after leaving the truck before it crossed the Zone lines, releasing him to return back to his own Cell, proceeding on foot. Serena and Adam separate from the others while Katlyn and Maya take Kelly to the clinic. While Kelly gets treatment Maya return to the New Town centre seeing the kitchen making preparations for lunch. The two leans into an old couch that was set up in the common area, letting out sighs of relief finally being able to relax a bit.
"You had to say our job was boring eh?" Maya says with a cheeky smile and soft laugh, Katlyn chuckles in return.
"I'm sorry about your friend. He seemed like a nice guy." Katlyn says with a soft tone, Maya's head lowers slightly.
"Johnny was funny. Dark humour was his favourite kind, obviously. He was a great guy." Maya says with a soft laugh, followed by a heavy sigh,
"I'll have to find his daughter later, tell her what happened." She continues, her head lowered slightly.
Katlyn doesn't say anything but is surprised when his daughter is mentioned, surprised that he had a daughter but still joined the resistance. She doesn't want to ask an outright question that could be seen as rude or inappropriate so she decides to ask where his daughter lives, she lives here in New Town. Maya goes on to tell Katlyn that he volunteered to do a week posting in the Safehouse then return.
"If his daughter is here why didn't he stay in New Town? Why take an obviously danger posting?" Katlyn asks, curious what Maya's answer will be.
"Yeah, its dangerous for us out there. Never knowing will a boot will be breaking down the door. But he did it for this." She says gesturing to area around them as people walk by.
Katlyn assumes she is gesturing at New Town, which makes sense but what Maya says next isn't exactly what she expected.
"He did it not just for New Town, and the people here but for everyone in this country. His daughter gets freedom. Real freedom. Not separated by Zones, Districts, or Classes. He wants his daughter to live in a country where you are free to go where you want, when you want. That's what he was fighting for, that's what he died for." Maya says with a soft voice, eyes filled with emotion.
Katlyn goes silent thinking about what she said, the fact John had a daughter but yet still risked his life for her to have a better life. Life in New Town isn't great but Katlyn can see that they are happy: Children playing together, people talking openly in the pathways, NVR Fighters talking with the people and being respected by the citizens of New Town shaking their hands and thanking them for what they do.
Life here is so much different than back home. The Green Zone definitely has it easier than the other Zones but not every district has it easy. Even in the Green you avoid eye contact with the ATTF and the military, here their soldiers are adored. This is nothing like how the News and the ATTF have portrayed the rebels.
Kelly walks up to them smiling with his non-injured arm laughing,
"Eh ladies! Look who lives another day!" He says, Maya and Katlyn happy to see him back.
Kelly sits between them groaning in relief as he stretches, face relaxed as he inks into the couch. The three joke with each other for a while to lighten the mood after what happened, laughing. The laughter quickly subsides when Adam shows up, telling them Serena asked them to her office.
The three of them follow Adam up a set of stairs between some of the makeshift shanty houses up to a semi nicer built but still ran down house made from wooden sheets opposed to the scrap metal and wood used on the common houses and shelters. Adam taps on the door with his knuckles before entering, the interior is semi lite with holiday lights, and gas lamps, basic field bed, desk with a chair and other furniture items. Serena is sat at her desk with her laptop when Adam and the others enters, she's visibly worried.
That's not the face you wanna see.
"The other Cell Leaders reached out, and this wasn't just our district. Other districts were hit as well. Somehow the ATTF learned about several of our Safehouses, so far the exact losses haven't been totaled yet." Serena explains with a sigh, fingers interlocked resting on the desk.
The others remain silent, the atmosphere becomes more tense and confused. Katlyn can see the expressions on everyone as they take seats in different places, even she can't help but feel concerned despite only being involved with the NVR for a few days. She feels a light burning sensation in her heart as she reflects on the last few days between first meeting Adam and Serena, delivering supplies to the encampment, and now everything that happened recently. All this finalizes her decision.
"We need to find out how they knew about the safehouses." She says, catching everyone's attention.
She knows what she just said, knowing she can't go back on it.
"We? Since when are you part of we?" Serena asks with a very curious tone.
"Since the last few days I've been shot at and almost killed twice in the last three days, and killed an ATTF soldier. I'm in this deep, not really any way out of it at this point." Katlyn replies, taking in the expressions of everyone around her.
The expression that stands out the most to her is Clara's: showing mixed reactions, both excited and almost scared. Katlyn knows Clara was responsible for the meeting between her and Serena from the beginning, but wasn't expecting such a mixed reaction from her.
"Its not that easy Katlyn. You can't just decide to join us. I appreciate your eagerness, and you have proven yourself capable but you have to prove you are with us." Serena explains, expression still the same.
She wants proof? Fine.
"I'll prove it too you. My dad keeps files at his home office. If there's any evidence on how they found the safehouses there's a chance it'll be there." She says with a confident tone.
"If you are certain you can find something there that can help us then you'll have my gratitude, and you'll definitely have earned your place with us. Take Adam with you." Serena says, reaching into a drawer in her desk.
She wants me to take him? Yeah, because that's a great idea. Taking an NVR Enforcer to an ATTF Household, what could go wrong?
"You really want me to take the walking NVR Billboard with me? No, that's not happening. I'll take Claire." She says with a slightly snarky tone, she can feel Adams eyes drilling into the back of her head.
"My dad knows her, so at least if he sees her there I won't have any problems. Unlike if I brought the revolutionary poster boy home, pretty sure that would make things difficult." She explains with a kinder tone, the burning feeling of Adams stare lessens.
Serena agrees and gives them permission to go through with searching the office. They take a car back to drive out of the Red Zone, on the drive back the reality of what Katlyn is doing starts to sink in: sneaking into her dads home office to potentially steal information from him, and officially become a member of the NVR. Clara can see the uneasy expression on her friends face but say nothing about it.
She knew what she was getting herself into when she volunteered to do this. Nothing I say can change how she feels, she just has to suck it up and get through this.
They arrive at Katlyn's house and make their way inside, Katlyn's heartrate increasing as they walk through the front door.
"Dad? Dad, are you here?" Katlyn calls out, hoping there'll be no reply.
To her relief there is no answer giving her the impression that no one is home. Clara follows her in closing the door quickly behind them, Katlyn immediately enters the home office through a set of double glass doors. The desk is placed in the middle of the office with a large bookshelf behind it, and a pair of filing cabinet against the wall. Katlyn begins searching the filing cabinet while Clara stands watch by the door. She flips through file after file looking for anything that could lead to how the ATTF learned of the safehouse locations. She goes through the first cabinet quickly, finding nothing that is of any use, she tries the second cabinet but its the same as before.
"Fuck! Nothing." She says with a frustrated tone.
"Check the desk." Clara says gesturing with her head.
Katlyn sits on the chair and starts going through the drawers, finding typical things you'd expect to be there.
"Fucking hell, dad! You have a lot of junk in here-"
"What? Did you find something?" Serena asks.
Katlyn noticed a map in the drawer, she pulls it out and lays it on the desk: Its a map of all the Vancouver Districts in their borders, certain buildings on the map are marked with an X inside a circle. Katlyn gestures for Clara to come over.
"Holy shit! These aren't just Van safehouses, look." Clara says while gestures to over areas on the map.
"Some of these are located outside of Van altogether. Take a picture. Did you find anything that might tell us who flipped on us?" Clara continues.
"No. He's most likely keeping that at his work office at the District HQ." Katlyn replies while taking the picture.
Suddenly there's a noise from the front door, the knob turning. The two look in the direction of the door, and panic. Frantically putting the map back into the drawer, trying to make look as if it was moved. The door creaks open as Katlyn quickly shoves the drawer closed. The girls quickly dart out of the office,
"Go! Go, go, go!" Katlyn says with a quiet, panicked tone.
They rush out of the office as the door closes while Katlyn pulls the double doors closed. They meet whoever it was entering as they round the corner, Gasp!
"Jesus! Nathan, you scared us!" Katlyn says catching her breathe.
"Sorry, I tried messaging but you didn't answer. Again." He says as Katlyn pulls out her phone, seeing the messages.
Damnit! Why does he have such shit timing for this!?
"I'm sorry, its been uh- a busy couple days." She says trying to say as little as possible.
"I get it. I was just wondering if you'd wanna hangout tomorrow? We haven't really seen each other since the bombing." He askes, hands in his jeans pockets.
Katlyn hesitates to answer at first, stammering a little bit trying to think of something to say but can't get the words out.
"You can go, Katie." Clara suddenly says, giving Katlyn a moment to get composed.
"I can take these back to the Boss, and we can figure out where to go with the pick up for the goods for the next delivery."
their eyes meet for a moment, Katlyn confused as to what Clara is talking about but it quickly makes sense: pick up referring to getting into the office and gathering what intel they can and getting it back to Serena and the others. Katlyn asks if she's sure she won't be needed.
"Nah it'll be okay. All things consider you need a break." Clara says with a soft smile, Katlyn nods her head and agrees.
Clara smiles at Nathan as she leaves. Nathan and Katlyn make their plans to meet up at their favourite fast food restaurant tomorrow, and catch up since Katlyn has been away for so long. After he leaves Katlyn takes a few deep breaths, and takes a shower before going to lay in bed for a while.
She changes into some more comfortable cloths, a T-shirt and underwear, laying down listening to music while thinking on her decision and what it means going forward and what they found.
No going back now. Once Clara shows that picture to the others I'm committed. That map though, so many safehouses across the District and outside of our own, how would know about that many of them? And who would sell out the resistance on that scale? Doesn't make sense...
