Chapter Five
Katlyn debates heavily the next day about going to the meeting but she's concerned: if she goes will they let her go? Will they kill her for knowing the location of an NVR Safehouse? Will they take her hostage and used as a bargaining chip? All these questions run wild through her mind as she throws her legs over her bed and goes to take a shower. After her shower she texts Clara to meet her at the Cafe, she agrees to the meeting with much hesitation knowing she would just go in circles thinking about it anymore. She leaves the house thinking one thing, I hope I don't live to regret this if things go wrong.
The three of them meet at the Cafe and walk down deeper into the city into the less desirable parts of the city with run down and boarded up shops, metal bars on the windows, tagging and trash everywhere. Katlyn isn't usually phased by much but this area of the city doesn't make her feel very at ease but Clara and Adam seem right at home here, people even looking at them out of equal fear and respect. They walk down an alley between two closed off buildings littered with trash, and NVR tags spray painted on the walls alongside various other rebellious symbols. They enter through the back of an abandoned apartment building and make their way up several floors before stopping outside one of the apartments with NVR sprayed black inside of a red circle on the door.
They enter and the apartment is empty aside from pieces of furniture that clearly wasn't here before: plastic chairs, wooden makeshift table, cooking station with a portable gas stove, canned food, and water. The smell isn't the greatest but that's expected given the state of the building. At the table are three NVR members with their weapons close by. One with a shogun, another with an AK and a pistol strapped to her hip, and the third has a pistol. Clara and Adam lead Katlyn towards the back room where two more NVR Fighters are standing both armed with hunting rifles. Katlyn makes a mental note of the mixed weapons the fighters are using, seeing that they clearly don't have access to better weapons given they have only one high powered rifle present, or maybe it's intentional. They enter the room and the same woman from the bombing is sitting on a worn down bed with her arm being propped up by her knee, her face is serious but not aggressively so.
She looks almost surprised that Clara managed to convince Katlyn to go along with the meeting, commenting that she did good work on getting her there. Katlyn is nervous but puts on her best poker face to hide the fact her heart is about to burst out of her chest and run out the door. The woman stands up, looking Katlyn up and down taking her in as if she's inspecting her. She locks eyes with Katlyn and grins slightly,
"She looks like a soldier. Almost convinced me she's not scared shitless. Almost." The woman sits back on the bed, and gestures for Katlyn to sit on the chair across from her, Katlyn sits and the two just stare at each other for a moment.
"I'm Serena, the Second for the NVR. Your friend has told me a lot about you." Serena says with a relaxed tone, Katlyn looks confused for a moment.
"Second? Clare told me you were the Boss."
"I am, I'm her Boss. You don't get to meet our Commander until I decide if you're trustworthy, or a threat to our cause." Serena explains with a bit firmer tone.
Katlyn stays silent for a moment while carefully choosing her next words wisely.
"So what? Is there some kind of test you're gonna give me?" Katlyn asks very sarcastically, Serena chuckles at her.
"You think this is a game? We're fighting for something, Katlyn. We're fighting for you."
Katlyn scoffs, smiling in a sarcastic manner,
"Fighting for me? You nearly killed my best friend, and got me detained for being an Insurgent. If that whole, fighting for you, line is the best you got you'll have to do better than that."
"What happened at the check point wasn't our fault!" Adam suddenly chimes in, Serena puts her hand out and his tense posture relaxes.
"What he means is, it wasn't our intention for your friend to get hurt. Our targets are, and only ever will be the occupiers. And you're right, that line only goes so far." Serena stands up and looks out the window pulling back old ratty curtains outside at some noises.
Katlyn walks over and looks out the opposite of the window looking down at street level: a Humvee outside of a rundown town house with soldiers and ATTF members kicking in a door, charging in and moments later pulling people out not even letting them get their footing as they are dragged down the steps yelling. The soldiers force them to the ground, boots on their backs and rifles aimed at the back of their heads, Katlyn watches with her eyes widened in shock.
What the fuck? The house raid I saw yesterday was one thing, but this? This is fucked!
An ATTF member gets into a shouting match with a male detainee, the distance doesn't allow for much to be heard but Katlyn can see clearly that the ATTF member kicks the man in the face sending him rolling onto his back while holding his face as a transport truck arrives. They watch as the soldiers start forcing the detainees to their feet, and loading them onto the truck. Katlyn walks out of the window with a knot in her stomach, from behind her she hears Serena's voice.
"This is a daily occurrence, Katlyn. And this, this was nothing. It's worse most days. Cruelty, brutality, oppression, this is what we're fighting to end. Haven't you seen enough of our people going missing? Families ripped apart during late night raids? Don't you want to see our country free?" Serena asks her with an increasing emotional tone, Katlyn turns to face her and sees the deep emotion in her Serena's eyes.
"I hate the military as much as you do, I want the same things as you but I'm not willing to risk my life for a cause that has lost more times than its won lately." Katlyn says with a stir and dismissive tone, making it clear she's done listening.
Katlyn opens the door and begins to leave, making it to the front door before Serena's voice echoes behind her,
"Katlyn, if I haven't convinced you then maybe this will." She reaches into her pocket and gives Katlyn a USB Stick, Katlyn looks at her a moment before asking what's on it.
"The truth about the raid. It wasn't a bloodbath in the way they claim it was." Katlyn takes the USB and puts it into her pocket before leaving, followed closely behind by Clara telling Serena she'll talk to Katlyn.
Katlyn stays just a head of Clara who is trying to catch up to after losing pace, Katlyn looks back to see Clara behind her,
"I really want to be left alone right now. Go home!" She says turning her head away, Clara rushes up to her putting her hand of Katlyn's shoulder.
"Kate! Katie, look! What do you want me to say?" Clara calls out as she brings Katlyn to a stop pulling her back.
"You got involved with the NVR! Of all the crazy shit you've done this? This just raised the bar, Claire! And the fact you didn't tell me! Your best friend! Why? Did you really think I'd rat you out to my dad? Fucking seriously?" Katlyn walks away without hesitation, very pissed off.
Clara is left just standing there unable to come up with something to say because she knows Katlyn is pissed with her, and isn't entirely wrong in her thoughts: Clara was told to not say anything about being in the NVR specifically because of what her father does. She stands there as Adam walks up to her, asking if she wants him to talk to Katlyn.
"No, she already doesn't like you as it is. If you talk to her instead of me her dad will be the least of your worries, trust me on that one." She walks away as Adam follows behind.
Katlyn gets home just as curfew begins with the new hours being enforced given the hours the day before were set in a rush attempt to get the districts under control quickly. She lets out a sign of relief being back home just in time while leaning against the front door when she feels someone knocking on the door,
"Who is it?" She asks already knowing who it is,
"Who do you think?" Clara answers,
Katlyn rolls her eyes and groans as she unlocks the door, and opens it seeing Clara standing there. She steps aside and sees Adam standing out in the yard,
"You forgot your pet." Katlyn says with sarcasm.
Clara gives shoots her a look knowing she's taking a shot at him just to try and get arise out of her because Katlyn is pissed off,
"Can we please skip the antics, Katie? Have an adult conversation?"
Katlyn scoffs and pushes the door closed with a sarcastic smile, she walks pass Clara chuckling in amusement at what she said,
"You lie to me and I'm the one being childish?"
The two walk into the living room and sit down in the same places they were yesterday, Katlyn leans forward with her hands put together waiting for Clara to say whatever it is she thinks will convince her to join the NVR. Clara seeing the look in her eyes sighs a bit before speaking,
"I'm sorry I lied. It's not that I don't trust you, Katie, you've been my best friend for how long? There's nothing I haven't told you-"
"Except the fact you're a Rebel." Katlyn snaps cutting Clara off
Clara is getting visibly annoyed but keeps her cool, taking a breath before continuing.
"Okay, yes, I'm a Freedom Fighter, but there is so much you don't know Katie. So much you haven't seen that the ATTF, and the military has done to our people."
Katlyn simply says, enlighten me then.
"The military carry out raids daily in the Grey Zones but no one ever hears about it because who cares, right? Just a bunch of homeless, and lowlife, low income citizens no one cares about. The Greys are no different than us. They have families, children, and dreams."
Katlyn has always been sympathetic to the people living in the Grey Zones but the fact that groups like the NVR can openly walk the streets leaves her concerned,
"I get that, really. But the fact your NVR buddies can parade with their tattoos openly doesn't really reflect well on those people. Especially with NVR, or other resistance groups freely throwing their propaganda around causing trouble." Katlyn says, still leaning forward with a firm tone.
"And that's the difference between me and you, Katie: You talk a lot of big talk but choose to make excuses as to why you won't take a stand. You want change right? You want to see our, people, and our home free from occupation but you refuse to open yours eyes and see the bigger picture, you refuse to actually make a fucking effort!" Clara says snapping at her with a very frustrated tone, Katlyn is slightly shocked by the outburst.
I didn't know this side of her existed... She's never been one to just go off before.
Katlyn goes to say something in a counter argument but Clara cuts her off,
"No, Katlyn! You talk about Resistance Propaganda but you have NO idea what we are actually doing. I know I hurt you by not telling you, I get that, but there is so much more to this! So much more that is bigger than you, bigger than me! You are just too busy sticking your head in the ground to see it! That USB Serena gave you will show you the truth. Look it over and get back to me tomorrow." Without hesitation Clara gets out, ignoring Katlyn's attempts to talk to her.
The door slams shut as Clara and Adam begin to leave. Adam notices the anger in how Clara is walking and groans,
"Guessing that went well. Think she'll come around?" He says with his hands in his hoodie pockets.
"She's naive to a lot of things happening but I know deep down she wants the same thing as us. Once she goes through that USB she'll get onboard." Adam asks her what the plan is if Katlyn doesn't get onboard with their plans.
"Then we stick to protocol: No loose ends."
She'd really be willing to take out her own best friend? Hmm guess if it has to be done.
