Chapter Five
"You have arrived at your destination." The GPS in Dillion's truck relayed the obvious.
"Thank you, Priscilla." Dillion said to the GPS, turning off the ignition.
"Priscilla?" Maleena chuckled when Dillion opened the door for her, offering her a hand down.
"Yeah. What's wrong with Priscilla?" Dillion asked, dropping her hand.
"Well, nothing I guess, but as nice of a truck as 'Priscilla' is, I would have expected a more...I don't know...rebellious, bolder name?" Maleena replied, looking at Dillion.
"A more, rebellious, bolder name, huh? What kind of name were you thinkin'?" Dillion stuck his hands into his pockets as him and Maleena slowly walked forward, towards the information bulletin board to pick up a map.
"You're gonna let me name your truck?" Maleena asked, letting out a chuckle.
"Why not? That way I will always think of you whenever I get in my truck." Dillion smiled that cockeyed smile that Maleena was really beginning to love.
"Alright. Hmm...how about the name Roxie?"
"Roxie?" Dillion repeated. "Honestly reminds me of a dog's name, but I like it. Her new name is Roxie." Dillion replied, stopping in front of the bulletin board.
"I mean Priscilla, really?" Maleena teased Dillion.
"It was the first name I could think of when I got her." Dillion quickly defended.
"Priscilla sounds like a dog name. Seriously, I picture a fluffy white poodle whenever I hear that name. Roxie, on the other hand, reminds me of something tough and rebellious...like your truck."
"Alright, Missy. Since you're in such a sassy mood, why don't you pick out which trail you would like to walk on." Dillion said, handing Maleena the open trail map.
Maleena looked over the map before deciding on a three-quarter of a mile long trail. Handing the map back to Dillion, Maleena said with a smile, "By the way, if you think that what I said was sassy, then wait till you get to know me better."
"I look forward to it." Dillion smiled that "rebel child" grin. Turning sideways, Dillion held out his hand, tilting his head to the side. "Come on, miss sassy sass. We have a trail to go on."
Chuckling, Maleena grabbed Dillion's hand, walking forward with him. She loved the way her hand felt in his, especially when he interlaced their fingers. His hand wasn't as rough as she expected, but if his truck spoke for his home life, Dillion doesn't have to work around the ranch as much as she has to.
After walking for a couple minutes around the large park, Dillion and Maleena finally arrived at the trail entrance. Stopping by the sign, Dillion pulled out his phone, dropping Maleena's hand. "What are you doing?" Maleena asked, watching Dillion walk around the sign, holding his phone in the air.
"I wanna take a picture with you, but I'm trying to find the best angle." Dillion replied, eventually seeming satisfied with "the angle" of the camera when he took a seat on a tall rock, beside the sign. "Here, come here." Dillion motioned for Maleena to come over to him. Maleena stood next to Dillion, leaning in close to him. She still was not in the frame of the picture, however. "Here, come a little closer." Dillion said, moving his phone slightly. "Okay, here, I have an idea." Dillion said, patting his lap. "Take a seat." There was that one sided grin.
"You want me to sit on your lap?" Maleena asked with a smile. She was already having so much fun with Dillion. He just seemed like the type of guy who was so easy going; she felt like she had already known him for a long time, not just a couple days.
"Yeah. It'll give us the best angle of the picture." Dillion winked.
"Alright." Maleena out two hands up in surrender, making her way in front of Dillion. Scampering on top of the tall rock, Maleena pushed herself onto Dillion's lap. His free hand held Maleena's knees up, preventing her from falling off the rock.
"There we go." Dillion smiled, his face close to Maleena's. "Alrighty. Smile." Dillion said, holding his phone out in front of him. After snapping a couple pictures, Dillion pulled his phone back to him, showing Maleena the pictures. "Man, we look good together, don't we?" Dillion remarked.
"You can't even see the whole sign!" Maleena let out a chuckle.
"I never said anything about gettin' the sign in the picture, I just said we had to get the best angle, but I realize that no matter what, you're gonna look pretty in any picture." Closing out of the camera app on his phone, Dillion added, "Actually, I really just wanted a picture of us together so I can brag about you to my friends."
"Oh, is that it?" Maleena teased back.
"And so whenever we are apart, I still have a picture of you that I can look at so I won't miss you as much."
Maleena smiled, pointing a finger at Dillion. "You, sir, are a sweet talker, and that is very dangerous for a gullible girl like myself."
"You are the kind of girl who deserves to be sweet talked to." Dillion smiled, a dimple peeking out from the corner of his mouth.
"You're sweet." Maleena replied. "But, are you gonna sit here and flirt with me all day, or do we get to actually walk the trail and explore?" Maleena said, partially teasing, but also serious.
Dillion let out a dramatic sigh. "If we have to, I guess we can go explore."
"Besides, I guarantee there are other people waiting to take a picture on this rock." Maleena countered.
"Really? I see no one else." Dillion looked around them.
"Maybe they're all hiding in the woods, waitin' till we leave before they emerge." Maleena said in her best creepy voice, moving her fingers and waving her hands in front of Dillion's face.
"Oh no. Now I'm scared. We should probably get off the rock then!" Dillion played right back.
Chuckling, Maleena hopped off of Dillion's lap, waiting for him to do the same. Pulling his phone out again, Dillion sent the pictures they just took to Maleena. "You ready?" He asked, smiling at Maleena.
Maleena smiled, nodding her head and walking forward. As he walked beside her, Dillion grabbed Maleena's hand, interlacing their fingers. "Are you havin' fun yet, pretty girl?" There was a smile on his face when he asked Maleena about twenty minutes into their walk.
"I am. I'm havin' a blast. Thank you for bringing me here. It's beautiful." Maleena said, looking all around her at the trees and the gray, snow capped mountains that decorated the background.
"Not as pretty as you." Dillion remarked, smiling at Maleena. Before Maleena could tell him how much of a flirt he was, Dillion dropped Maleena's hand, immediately walking to the side of the trail, into the green foliage.
"Dillion, what are you doing?" Maleena asked chuckling.
"Here, hold my hat." Dillion stopped his trek off the path to give Maleena his hat.
"Where are you goin'?" Maleena stepped close to the edge of the trail. Beneath her feet was a two foot drop above where Dillion was standing, on more green grass.
"Just stay there." Dillion smiled up at Maleena, standing sideways, sliding down the hill even further.
"Dillion, please be careful." Maleena said down to Dillion who was now about thirty feet off the trail. Arriving at the base of the hill, where a stream was running, Dillion disappeared from Maleena's sight.
A couple minutes later, Dillion's figure appeared again. Shouting up to Maleena, Dillion had a hand behind his back. "Turn around."
"Why? Then I can't see you if you fall climbin' back up." Maleena said back to him, fingering the bill of his cowboy hat.
"Just trust me. Don't look." Dillion replied, beginning his climb back up to Maleena.
Three minutes later, Dillion was still not back up the hill yet. Maleena was starting to get worried. "You alright, Dillion?" Maleena asked, looking over her shoulder.
Just then, a strong arm came around Maleena's waist from behind. Her hair tickled her neck, sending chills throughout her whole body when Dillion whispered, "I got you something."
Turning, Maleena pulled away from Dillion. She felt the blush beginning to rise on her cheeks when Dillion handed her a beautiful bouquet of wildflowers. Taking them from Dillion, Maleena lifted the bouquet to her nose, smelling them before saying, "They are beautiful. But how on earth did you see these flowers down there from up here?"
Dillion shrugged. "I've been on this trail a million times."
"Oh, is there where you take all of the girls on their first dates?" Maleena asked, a mischievous grin playing on her lips.
Dillion tilted his head back, letting out an almost awkward chuckle. "You're the only one who I have walked down there just to pick flowers for." He replied, not fully answering Maleena's question. Reaching down, Dillion retrieved his hat from Maleena's hand, replacing the hat with his hand. Intertwining their fingers, Dillion smiled at Maleena. "You ready to keep on explorin'?"
Maleena smiled, sniffing the bouquet of flowers again. There were several different colors and types of flowers. She knew once she got back to the house, she would have to put them in water, preserving them as long as she could before drying them.
Not much longer, Dillion and Maleena reached the end of the trail, exiting where they came in on the circular trail. Once again, Dillion paused at that same rock as they did walking in. "We gotta take another picture to prove we 'survived the hike'." Dillion said in a commandeering voice, making a fist in the air to give emphasis to his last statement.
"You're a goofball." Maleena chuckled, following Dillion to the rock. Knowing the drill, Maleena crawled up onto the rock, sitting on Dillion's lap. Reaching his phone out in front of them, Dillion snapped a couple pictures.
"Aw, how cute." Dillion and Maleena heard a voice to their left. "Would you like me to take y'all's picture?" A middle aged woman asked Dillion and Maleena.
"Sure. That would be great!" Maleena said to the kind lady.
"Thank you, ma'am." Dillion gave away his phone. Pulling Maleena close to him, Dillion wrapped both arms around her, his left hand a little too close to her rump for comfort.
After the first two pictures, Maleena shifted slightly, bringing Dillion's hand up higher on her back. "Strike another pose." The lady holding Dillion's phone suggested.
Dillion smiled, taking off his cowboy hat and placing it on top of Maleena's head. With a laugh, Maleena turned to the camera. Two more pictures later, Maleena took off Dillion's hat, leaning her face right against his.
"Perfect." The impromptu photographer remarked, pulling the camera down. "Y'all are really cute together." She said, handing Dillion his phone again.
"Thank you, ma'am. It's actually our first date." Dillion said it with a smile, looking at Maleena.
"Aw well good for y'all. You two have a nice day." The white haired lady responded, shifting her backpack higher up on her back.
"Thank you, ma'am." Dillion said.
"You as well." Maleena smiled. She slid down from Dillion's lap once the photographer walked away. "Can you please send me those pictures when you get a chance?" Maleena asked as her and Dillion slowly made their way back to Dillion's truck. The sky around them had begun to turn dark. Maleena figured it was getting close to the time the park closes.
"Absolutely, I will." Dillion smiled, opening the passenger side door of his truck for Maleena.
"Thank you." Maleena said, hopping into the cab. Once inside, she grabbed her water bottle from the cup holder. Removing the cap, Maleena slid the stems of the bouquet into her makeshift vase.
"Smart." Dillion pointed at the water bottle vase. Pushing the key into the ignition, Dillion turned it, his truck turning on with a loud rumble. Looking at the digital time display on the dash, Dillion remarked, "Oh, it's only 8pm. We have plenty of time before I need to take you back home. Do you wanna go grab a milkshake and then you can come back to my house and watch a movie? I'll cook you supper once we get back, too." Dillion smiled over at Maleena as he buckled his seat belt.
Maleena hesitated. Her and him watching a movie together on a first date at his house? That wasn't how it usually worked, was it? However, she had had such a fun time with Dillion already today that she wasn't sure she was ready for their date to end.
Before Maleena could give a response, Dillion added, "Don't worry. My parents aren't home." Without a turn signal, Dillion turned right out of the park entrance, his foot heavy on the gas as he drove.
The comment only made Maleena worry more. Dillion seemed like a genuinely good guy...with a slightly rebellious side...so what was the harm in going to his house for a little while? "Um, I guess that would be okay." Maleena replied, forcing a smile.
"Great! So there's a place down yonder on the way back to my house that has the best milkshakes. We can get them to go and eat them at my house if you wanted."
"Yeah, that sounds good." Maleena replied, sparing a glance at Dillion.
"Everything okay, pretty girl?" Dillion asked, glancing at Maleena. He must've sensed her sudden quietness.
"Yeah." She smiled, not letting him know she was hesitant about going back to his house. Growing up with protective parents, and an older brother, Maleena was raised to not give in too easy and if you don't feel comfortable in a situation such as this, follow your gut.
"Good. You havin' fun yet?" Dillion switched hands on the steering wheel, placing his right one on Maleena's knee momentarily, giving it a squeeze. Straightening back up in his seat, Dillion looked back to his driving.
"I'm havin' a blast. This has been nice because it gives me the opportunity to explore, and see what new thangs are around my new home." Maleena answered, looking out her window. Even though Maleena couldn't see much in the darkness, she knew it was still beautiful out here, but it still wasn't like home.
"That's what I was hopin' you'd say." Dillion smiled, slowing his truck to turn into the little dairy stop. Parking his truck in a spot in front of the small shop, Dillion jumped down from his seat to open Maleena's door for her. Grabbing her hand as they walked up to the order window, Dillion listed off several different milkshake flavors off the top of his head. "I never would have thought of havin' a blueberry, peanut butter, pineapple or lemon milkshake, but I've had them all and they are all equally delicious." Dillion said as they waited in line.
"I love that they have unique flavors. The regular flavors get boring after a while." Maleena squinted her eyes to read the poorly lit menu board. Scanning the list of flavors, Maleena saw one that stood out to her. "Ooh, the black cherry on sounds amazing."
"That is one of my favorites, for sure. I think I'm fixin' to get the raspberry one today." Turning to Maleena he added, "I'll let you try it."
"Next, please." The lady behind the cash register called out.
"That's us." Dillion stated the obvious, walking up to the window.
"Hey, Dillion. How are you tonight?" The young girl behind the window asked with a smile. She obviously knew Dillion.
"Doin' well, Sarah. Takin' this pretty girl out on a date." Dillion smiled at Misty, giving her hand a slight squeeze.
Sarah leaned forward, poking her head out the window to see Maleena. "Hi, it's nice to meet you. I'm Sarah. A friend of Dillion's." She stretched out her hand to shake Maleena's.
Dropping Dillion's, Maleena gripped Sarah's. "It's nice to meet you."
Retreating her hand Sarah disappeared back behind her window. "Where'd you take her, Dillion? The usual park date?" There was a smile on Sarah's lips.
"Easy there, it's not the 'usual'. I switch thangs up every now and then. I made this date special since Maleena is special." Dillion smiled that million dollar grin at Maleena.
"Yeah? How'd you make it special?" The question was followed by a chuckle.
Looking back to Sarah, Dillion said, "We took some pictures on a rock at the entrance of the trail, and I picked her a bouquet of flowers."
"Aw you did? Wow. You really did make it special. I didn't even get that when we went there." Sarah let slip. Dillion shot her a look, almost a glare. Hoping Maleena wouldn't pick up on what just happened, Sarah quickly asked, "So, what can I get y'all tonight?"
"I'll take a small raspberry and Maleena would like to try the black cherry milkshake, please. To go." Dillion ordered, pulling out his wallet.
"Alright. It'll be $8.50." Sarah rung up, taking the $10 bill Dillion held out to her.
"Keep the change. Steve will appreciate that." Dillion said, letting out a chuckle.
Sarah chuckled too at their inside joke. "Y'all wait around the side and I'll get those shakes started."
"Alright. Thanks, Sarah." Dillion said, taking Maleena's hand as they walked to the other window on the side of the building.
"So this is just a 'usual' date?" Maleena asked in a playful voice so Dillion wouldn't know Sarah's comment stung a little.
"What? No. No, not at all. I've taken a couple girls to the park on a date, but you're the only one who has gotten flowers, a picture, and an invite to watch a movie at my place afterwards. That's because you're special, and not like the other girls." Dillion played off with his charm. He leaned closer to Maleena, smiling once again.
"That was smooth." Maleena said in response, trying to remind herself that she had only met Dillion less than 48 hours ago. She hardly knew anything at all about him; how could he already call her special? Liking the attention and flattery Dillion gave her, Maleena unknowingly ignored all of the clear red flags that were being thrown out in terms of Dillion's character.
