Chapter 34
Panic was the only emotion that Taeyong felt at reading the single-word note left behind from Arcadia. He scrambled out of bed, falling to the floor as the blankets were all wrapped around him. Once he was free of the blankets, he hurried to his phone, which was for some reason across the room. He called Arcadia's number, only for the phone to ring in the room with him.
"What?" Taeyong spun around to see Arcadia's phone on the floor where she'd thrown it the previous day. Taeyong could literally feel his blood run cold at the sudden realization; Arcadia was gone with no way to contact her. Not sure what to do, and hoping that he was wrong, Taeyong called Eclipse next. She picked up after a few rings.
"Hello?" Eclipse sounded tired as if Taeyong's call had awoken her.
"Eclipse, have you heard from Arcadia?" Taeyong's voice revealed how frantic and panicked he was.
"What do you mean? She's supposed to be with you!" Eclipse's tiredness instantly was pushed away.
"She isn't here, but her things are. Her phone, laptop, the bags she'd brought; everything!"
"Hold on. Let me go out and ask if anyone had seen her this morning." Taeyong was able to hear Eclipse hurry out of her bedroom, cell phone still in hand. He could hear her asking the group and heard their responses. None of them had seen or heard from Arcadia that morning. "Taeyong, what's going on? Why is my sister suddenly missing?"
"I don't know. She was here when we fell asleep, and I don't know how she could have left without her things and without waking me up."
"I'll try to summon Gwisin. Maybe he'd seen her or knows where she is right now." Eclipse hurried to the little shrine in her room. She tried to summon him, but felt absolutely nothing and got nothing from it. It was like he detached himself from the shrine and was ignoring her calls. "He isn't responding to me. What the fuck?!" Eclipse was frustrated. "I have to go. I... I have to find her. You keep trying to find her too, alright?"
"Of course," Taeyong replied as the two of them hung up the phone. Taeyong was determined to find his lover. He planned to search the entire city and even further if he had to. "I will find her," Taeyong told himself, more as a reassurance than anything.
~ ~ ~
However, the man was wrong. The whole day passed by with Eclipse and Taeyong enlisting many others to help in the search of Arcadia. There wasn't a single clue as to where she went. There was no proof she even left the city. No one spotted her and no one knew where she'd gone. It was like she vanished from the face of the earth suddenly.
This left a hopeless Taeyong to return back to the 127 dorm all alone. The others had heard by then all about Arcadia's disappearance. Johnny, Mark, Jaehyun, and Yuta all gathered around Taeyong, in hopes of helping him feel better. They tried to reassure him, but they had no helpful suggestions, which only served to upset the hopeless man further.
"Guys, it's alright. I get you're just trying to help, but it isn't really helping right now. I think I... I think I just need to be alone for a while." Taeyong sadly spoke to his friends around him. They watched as he got up and headed to his room for privacy. Once he was there, he began to go through his social media accounts and fan sites. He hoped that there would be someone who'd spotted Arcadia at some point through the day.
The time passed slowly for Taeyong as he hopelessly scrolled through pages of nothingness. At exactly 9 pm, though, something happened. Suddenly there was a notification on his social media sites that Arcadia had uploaded a video on every single one of her social media accounts. Taeyong instantly clicked to the video and began to watch it.
In the video, Arcadia wore a black shirt with a blank white wall behind her. She was seated, so her bottom half wasn't visible. Her face gave away no emotion at all. She was completely neutral, and when she started to speak, her voice held no emotion as well.
"Hello, everyone. I'm sure most of you are wondering what this is about. The purpose of this is to explain why I will no longer be seen by any of you. My mental health has been getting worse in the last few months. It's best for everyone that I leave the public eye for a little while. So, I've left Korea. I won't say where I am, nor will I contact anyone that I love and care about. I need to find myself again and I need to be the person that I want to be, not have to be. I need to heal before I can fully give myself to being an idol. A friend. A sister. A lover. I'm so sorry for this sudden departure and this may potentially be the last time anyone hears from me unless I get better and decide to return to Korea."
Arcadia then sighed before frowning, showing emotion for the first time the entire video.
"Eclipse. I know that you're going to have a tough time with this, but I need you to understand that I have to do this. You are the best sister I could have ever asked for and I wish you and Taemin the best. Coven, I just want you all to know that I'll miss all of you. You've become the family that I have always wanted. All my friends that I care so deeply about, I want all of you to know that I'll also miss you guys. You all accepted me so quickly and I'm so thankful for it. You all made me feel safe and happy. Now, Taeyong. I'll miss you the most, but I want you to go on as if I'm not going to come back to you and the life I had created. Pretend that I don't exist. Be happy and don't feel bad about me leaving. I love you, Taeyong. I love you with every piece of me, even the broken ones. Despite saying that, I don't want you to wait for me."
Arcadia then smiled at the camera.
"Maybe we'll all meet again eventually, but don't hold onto hope, since no one knows what this world holds for anyone's fate. Goodbye, everyone and thank you for the time I got to spend with you all."
With that, the video ended and the screen went black. Taeyong was left staring at his own face in the reflection of his phone. Tears streamed down his face as he thought about everything that Arcadia had spoken in the video. He wasn't sure what to do, so he went to watch the video again. He listened to it until the video suddenly cut off at exactly five minutes after the video first aired. The video had been deleted, but Taeyong soon realized that it wasn't the video itself. Every single one of Arcadia's social media accounts, even personal ones, were deleted.
Moments later, Taeyong was still processing everything when his phone rang. It was Eclipse, so he answered it right away.
"My sister is gone..." Eclipse muttered to Taeyong. He could hear that she'd been crying.
"I know," Taeyong replied through tears of his own.
"What are we supposed to do now?"
"I... I don't know."
"I can't lose my sister. She didn't sound like she was ever coming back. What if she's going to kill herself? How could I live with knowing that I let her go off and die?" Eclipse broke down into sobbing like she had been before the call started. Hearing the despair in Eclipse's voice caused Taeyong to feel incredibly guilty. He should have woken up when she left. He should have kept a tighter grip on her. All sorts of things like this were running through his head as he listened to Eclipse's crying.
"I'm so sorry, Eclipse." Taeyong choked out as he started crying harder due to the negative things going through his mind.
"It isn't your fault. Its mine. I'm her sister. I should have done something more." Eclipse cried out as she tried to regain control over her sobbing. "Oh, Taemin's trying to call."
"I'll let you answer that. Again. I'm so sorry." With that, the two hung up their phones, and Taeyong was left with a completely empty feeling within him. He wasn't sure what to do now, but he knew that he needed to keep looking for Arcadia, somehow. He wasn't sure exactly how to go about that, but he was trying to keep his hopes up.
~ ~ ~
A week went by, with no word, no sight, and not a single clue as to where Arcadia had gone off to or where she was at that moment. After realizing that they may never see Arcadia again, everyone around her began to feel differently than when she was around.
Eclipse completely broke down. She refused to eat to drink anything. She refused to sleep because she wanted to be awake if they heard anything about her younger sister. She also refused to go to work or do anything work-related. She wouldn't even leave the apartment and remained stationed in Arcadia's room.
Realizing that eclipse needed him, Taemin moved some of his things into the Coven dorm, specifically Eclipse's room. He stayed with Eclipse every day and night trying to comfort her, and when he couldn't be there, he sent over the members of SHINee to watch over her. Eclipse was in a way thankful for their support, but she felt equally as guilty for taking them away from their work. However, Eclipse couldn't bring herself to get out of Arcadia's bed. Eclipse didn't even take care of Precious, so the others of Coven had to take care of the little cub. Precious did lay with Eclipse all of the time though. She was feeling her mother's emotions and wanted to help her, but knew that she couldn't do anything.
Nova was broken but she tried to keep going as normal as possible. There were moments when she had a sudden burst of crying that she couldn't control. Sophia tried to help her out by trying to reassure Nova that they'd find Arcadia. Nothing seemed to help in those moments of intense sadness though.
Amara became angry. She felt anger and had outbursts over any little thing. She began to argue with everyone around her and blamed them all for anything and everything that was going wrong. She felt so guilty for not helping Arcadia that she turned her sadness into rage toward everyone around her.
Ga-eul, being the leader and oldest, felt like Arcadia's disappearance was her fault and her fault alone. She began to feel as though as she wasn't a good leader anymore and that she didn't deserve to be in the leader position. At first, Ga-eul wanted to step down as leader, but the others of Coven wouldn't let her.
Kim-Lee was more quiet than usual. Everyone around her could tell that she was clearly hurting and feeling terrible about Arcadia, but she refused to speak about her feelings. Kim-Lee just wanted to keep everything to herself and not burden anyone with her feelings. She did this despite knowing that it wouldn't do any good and only hurt her in the end.
Aurora seemed fine on the outside. She went about her time as if nothing was wrong, but there were moments she went to say something but paused. It was like she forgot that Arcadia wasn't there anymore and wanted to speak to her, but then remembered that she couldn't. She felt like there was a missing piece in their group but acted like she was in denial about Arcadia being missing.
Mark, Johnny, and Ten all equally felt horrible. Out of NCT, other than Taeyong, they had been the closest friends to Arcadia. They had wanted to help her, but now that she was gone, they were left with a sadness that wouldn't go away. They all tried their best to act normal and go on like nothing was wrong, but every so often someone would bring Arcadia up and they'd get sad again.
Taeyong was devastated like Eclipse was. However, being the leader of NCT he went on with his work as normal but didn't have the energy that he had before. He trudged along, dragging his feet like he never had before. He wasn't as creative and it was honestly like a piece of him had been stolen from him. He hardly was sleeping and was also hardly taking care of himself.
It came to the point where the rest of NCT 127 were worried about him, to the point they gathered in their living room with Taeyong. It was time for an intervention.
It was late at night and 127 had summoned Taeyong, despite him not wanting to get out of bed. They sat him in a chair and gathered around him.
"What's this about?" Taeyong's voice showed how drained he was. It was like the happiness had been taken from him, leaving him an exhausted mess.
"Dude, you can't keep going on like this." Mark began, trying to sound softer as to not upset the older man. "Arcadia wouldn't want you to be wallowing in sadness. She wouldn't want you to not be yourself anymore."
"She said she wanted you to go on as if she wasn't coming back. Not lie in bed and only come out when you have to." Yuta stated to his friend before Taeyong could argue with Mark. This seemed to upset Taeyong though, which caused him to cut off the next person trying to talk.
"Arcadia is coming back," Taeyong muttered to his group before anyone else could speak up.
"I don't think she is," Johnny spoke sadly to his leader. "If she was coming back, wouldn't she have told you? Why would she let you and everyone else think she's not coming back? Why would she let you and Eclipse suffer so much?"
"I..." Taeyong wanted to argue and give Johnny an answer, but he couldn't find the words.
"You need to move on. You can't keep holding onto someone who isn't coming back. It isn't healthy and we're all worried about you. You aren't yourself and you are hurting yourself now. The fans are noticing the difference and are worried about you as well." Mark said to Taeyong, which were the words Taeyong needed to hear at that moment in time. Taeyong looked up and around at the men around the room. He then looked to the floor and took a deep breath in and out slowly.
"You're right." Taeyong finally spoke up as he looked back up to his group again. "I'll try to do better. It'll take time to get over her, but... I'll try."
"That's all we can ask." Yuta patted Taeyong on the back as he spoke. Taeyong gave Yuta a sad smile, but nonetheless, it was a smile. This gave the others hope for the broken man.
"I think I'm going to get to sleep. Hopefully, I'll feel a bit more rested tomorrow." Taeyong stated as he stood up and began to head for his room. He paused though and turned to his group-mates and friends. "Thank you all." Before they could say anything in response, Taeyong disappeared and went to his room.
Taeyong fell asleep that night feeling extremely tired. He wasn't sure how to go about moving on from Arcadia, but he knew that he needed to. He didn't realize that his negativity was affecting everyone around him. He didn't want them to worry about him and it was clear that this wallowing in sadness had gone on for too long. He wasn't quite ready for this, but he knew he had to suck it up and do it. For the sake of everything, he'd worked so hard on. For the sake of his friends, family, and fans. He needed to move on from the one person he truly and wholly gave his heart to.
~ ~ ~
As time went on, Taeyong was able to slowly move on from Arcadia. He wasn't thinking about her as much and when he did, he didn't dwell too hard on the fact that she was gone. Everything around him stopped reminding him of her and he was able to go days without feeling too negatively about the situation. He finally was to the point where he no longer needed to wear the little vile of Arcadia's soul that he'd worn from the moment he first put it on. So, he put it in a shoebox and put it in his closet to get it out of sight, out of mind.
After a few weeks of moving on, Taeyong was himself again. He was able to laugh normally, smile normally, and even react calmly when asked about Arcadia. He was able to carefully explain that he didn't feel as horrible as he had before. He didn't feel guilty and worried for her. He just didn't feel anything about Arcadia anymore. Taeyong was finally able to feel as though there wasn't a hole in his heart and soul anymore. He seemed to have completely moved on from Arcadia.
However, his friends and group noticed that he seemed to be pushing things. He was acting as if he never even cared about Arcadia in the first place. This worried them, but they'd gotten what they asked for. Taeyong had moved on and they weren't about to hurt that progress. They hoped that by pretending to have moved on, Taeyong really would one day.
After a full month after Arcadia's disappearance, there was an announcement from SM Entertainment to the public and to Coven. Coven would no longer be stuck at standstill. They wouldn't be waiting for Arcadia's return if that ever even happened. Arcadia would be officially be replaced by a new woman.
Sierra was the new girl. She'd been an idol for a few years but by herself. She never worked with anyone and wasn't really that popular in the first place. SM thought it would be a good idea for her and Coven if she joined the group.
Sierra was an American. She had red hair that was about shoulder-length but had fringe cut just above her eyes. She was a few inches taller than Arcadia, making her about Nova's height. Personality-wise, Sierra and Arcadia were similar there as well. Sierra was a little different though. Sierra didn't hold the darkness within her as Arcadia did. She could laugh and smile more freely than Arcadia. She was sweeter and nicer as well. She didn't argue with anyone and she was polite to those around her.
The fans had mixed feelings about the new girl. They weren't sure if it was the right time to replace Arcadia. They were hesitant to like her, but she was so similar to Arcadia that most of them didn't fuss and complain too much.
Eclipse, however, was furious about her sister's replacement. She refused to accept the new redhead. She didn't speak or look at Sierra. It was clear that she had hate toward the new female. Even so, Eclipse didn't have the will or strength to fight anymore.
Since Eclipse had continued to not eat or drink, Sophia had a doctor come in and hook up an I.V for the pink-haired woman. Eclipse still wouldn't get out of Arcadia's bed and she hardly went got up to even use the bathroom.
While Eclipse began to decline, Taemin's worries increased. He wondered if Eclipse would ever get better or even start to get better. So, the only thing he could do was hire a professional to come and chat with Eclipse in hopes they'd be able to talk her through her grief. Even Ten had come to Eclipse in hopes he'd be able to help even a little bit. So, he ended up having some sleepovers with Eclipse and Taemin. Unfortunately, nothing was helping her.
The rest of Coven were also getting more and more worried. They didn't want to be forced to replace Eclipse as well, but those types of talks had begun already.
Even the NCT members that knew Arcadia were hesitant with Sierra when they worked together. They felt that she was too much of a perfect replacement for Arcadia and worried that it would affect things if Arcadia were really to ever return.
While his group-mates were strange around Sierra, Taeyong instantly hit it off with her. No one was sure if Taeyong really liked her for her, or if he was seeing Arcadia in her, but they couldn't do anything but watch them. Coven, NCT, and the fans watched as Taeyong and Sierra quickly fell for each other. They began to do everything together. They worked together, made songs together, and went on dates together.
Once it came out that they were officially a couple, things began to change around them. NCT, Coven, and the fans all were immediately worried for Taeyong. They were also a little put off by the sudden relationship. The fans more specifically were outraged by the new couple. They didn't accept them and most admitted that they would never be okay with Taeyong dating Sierra. The people who personally knew the couple also felt that way, but they kept their opinions to themselves.
When Eclipse had heard that Sierra and Taeyong were official, she reacted terribly. She would have thrown anything within her reach, but she just didn't have the strength so she ended up sobbing and screaming at Sierra, despite that redhead not actually being there in the room. If Sierra ever came in to check on Eclipse, which she rarely did, the pink-haired woman would glare at her with all the hate she could muster up. Sierra learned fast to not go near Eclipse.
However, what bothered Eclipse the most was that she felt betrayed by Taeyong. She began to resent him as well, for many reasons actually. He had made no attempt to reach out to her after Arcadia's accounts disappeared. He made no 'get well' wishes for her and had completely stopped searching for Arcadia. Eclipse felt as though he was writing Arcadia off and was going to pretend that they were never together in the first place.
So, with everyone seemingly against them, Taeyong and Sierra went about their days as though everything was normal. They didn't have a care in the world as their lives progressed and as they got closer. To them, it really was like Arcadia just didn't exist anymore.
