Fact #16
Hamilton's last words.
"I have a tender reliance on the mercy of the Almighty, through the merits of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am a sinner. I look to Him for mercy; pray for me."
I found these words from an unreliable source.
However, Ron Chernow does note that these words were some of his last.
It does say that after he spoke these words, he tried to persuade the bishop, Benjamin Moore, to give him communion. (typical Hamilton. Even on his death bed he was trying to persuade someone.) He apparently, "expressed his faith in God's mercy." (Chernow, 708) He then forgave Col. Burr. The bishop gave in and gave him communion and when that was done, Hamilton leaned back, "and declared that he was happy." (Chernow, 708)
Chernow does note that the next day he could speak with difficulty but does not say anything about what he said.
So I do not know what Hamilton's exact words are, but I do know that "Raise a glass to freedom" were not his last words.
A/N:
Just a follow up from that last Hamiltrash.
I find facts in everything. So HA!
