- • - BACKSTORY - • -
After losing his friends in 1981 — first James and Lily, then Peter and Sirius — Remus Lupin was left trying to get by without the people who had made everything seem worth it. Cindy Redgrave, a Ravenclaw from the Marauders' year, took advantage of this vulnerability by manipulating him into a relationship with her. She was controlling, manipulative, and lowkey abusive, making Remus feel like she was the only one who could ever love him. Almost two years and nine months went by before Remus managed to get out of this relationship, leaving Cindy for good. But in doing so, he unknowingly left his unborn daughter behind as well.
This daughter — Celeste Redgrave — was born in April the next year, on a full moon. Living with her pretty neglectful mother was bad enough, but when Cindy discovered Celeste's wolfborn powers, it became a lot worse. Cindy took great pleasure in torturing her daughter, punishing her for being a "monster" and a "freak".
After years of this, Celeste finally escaped. She took the money she'd been secretly sneaking away for years, turned into her wolf form, and ran. Somehow, she managed to find her way to Diagon Alley, where she bought herself a wand and a couple of basic spell books, before practically running into Professor McGonagall. Being the BAMF she is, Minnie immediately realised that something was wrong with this small child who had scars on her face and was buying a wand unaccompanied.
Celeste didn't want to tell the whole story, but Minnie got enough of it to realise that she needed to stay somewhere safe. Minnie took the young girl to Hogwarts and told Dumbledore that Cel was going to live there now. So, about a month before the end of the 1990–1991 school year, five-year-old Celeste moved into Hogwarts. Since she didn't have a proper guardian within the castle, she was looked after by the teachers and students alike. Some of the students didn't like her being there, especially the more snobby ones, but the rest didn't mind, and most of them enjoyed Cel's company.
Within a few months, the new school year started, bringing with it the Boy Who Lived, Voldemort living on the back of some dude's head, and a nice side of danger. Having befriended the Golden Trio at the start of the year, Celeste managed to get caught up in the dramatics of Voldemort's attempts to kill Harry and steal the Philosopher's Stone. Being so young and so used to danger, though, she just shrugged it off and carried on with her life as though being attacked by a three headed dog and threatened by a dude with the Dark Lord on the back of his head was completely normal.
Her second year living at the school brought new dangers, and this time, it was Cel's decision to befriend Ginny that drew her into danger. This friendship meant she managed to get through the year without being petrified, but it also meant she got to know Ginny far too well for Tom Riddle's liking. So, at the end of the year, when Ginny was taken into the Chamber of Secrets, she took Celeste with her. Like the previous year, though, the young girl took all of this in her stride.
The year after that, Remus Lupin came to Hogwarts. Celeste knew instantly that he was a werewolf, and also knew that he had the same last name as her father — Cindy had complained about him before, blaming him for Cel being "such a freak". Because Cel had been using the last name Redgrave out of habit while she was at Hogwarts, nobody realised they were related at first, but people soon started picking up on the similarities between them.
On the first full moon of the school year, Remus and Celeste transformed together, and knew from the "pack" feeling they got that they were related. The truth came out soon after, and Celeste started going by Celeste Lupin.
When the dramatics of Sirius Black had run their course (and Celeste had, once again, been caught up in the craziness), Cel went to live at Remus' house. But not even a week later, they were forced to return to Hogwarts when Cindy came looking for Cel. A bedroom for Remus was added to Celeste's old rooms at the castle, and the two of them brought a lot of the things from his house to Hogwarts, ready to stay there for as long as needed.
Her fourth year in the school proceeded as dangerously as was normal, although this time Celeste thankfully didn't get pulled into said danger. She made friends with as many Beauxbatons and Durmstang students as possible, cheered for all of the champions equally, gatecrashed the Yule Ball, and helped Hermione with S.P.E.W. Of course, the happiness couldn't last, and by the end of the year, Cedric Diggory was dead, Voldemort had returned, and the Second Wizarding War began.
The fifth year was hell. Remus was often away on Order missions, and Umbridge was taking over the school. Celeste often found herself in unofficial "detentions" with Toad-Face for siding with Harry and trying to tell people that Voldemort was back, as well as for just generally being angry at Umbridge for the things she was doing in the school, and for the anti-werewolf laws she'd created. She hid the scars from these "detentions" from everyone, and helped Dumbledore's Army out once it had been formed as much as she could. She missed the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, but was affected badly when Remus told her that Sirius was dead.
The following year was somehow even worse. People outside the school kept dying, and people inside the school kept almost dying too. Remus was sent to live with the werewolves for an Order mission, so Celeste barely saw him, and was constantly worried about him. By the end of the year, Dumbledore was dead, Snape was a traitor, and Voldemort grew ever more powerful.
The next year was Celeste's seventh at the school, but her first year as an actual student. Under the new laws, she was forced to attend the Death Eater-controlled Hogwarts, and found herself on the wrong side of the Carrows pretty often as she once again helped Dumbledore's Army with the resistance. It was during this year that her wolfborn powers were finally discovered by most people, thanks to her inability to get somewhere isolated for her transformation, and this only gave the Death Eaters at Hogwarts more reason to target her. To Cel, it felt as though she'd gone full circle, as she was once again being tortured for being a "monster" and a "freak".
When the Battle of Hogwarts happened, Celeste refused to be evacuated, instead helping the Defenders of Hogwarts with potions, plants, and anything else that meant she didn't have to rely on her limited first-year magic. Because of this, she saw Remus get killed, and her world shattered.
The end of the battle, the end of the war, was a hollow victory for Celeste. Too many of her loved ones — her friends, her family — had been killed, and her only real home lay in ruins. And she knew that whatever happened, nothing would ever be the same again.
