When Aureum started showing signs of magic, her Muggle parents didn't know what was happening, so they thought she was possessed or something. Their fear led them to start neglecting her, and they became quite abusive (physically and emotionally). They dictated every single detail of Ria's life as a desperate attempt to keep control over the situation, trying to make her into a perfect little princess.

This meant Aureum grew up having lots of rules drilled into her, many that she resented with all her heart. Little girls should wear dresses. Little girls should play with dolls. Little girls should be seen and not heard. Little girls should be obedient. Only boys are allowed to wear t-shirts and trousers. Only boys are allowed to play outside. Only boys are allowed to be noisy. Only boys are allowed to do what they want. She broke most of these rules quite frequently, but was always punished severely for it.

When Ria was five, she started talking to animals in languages that didn't seem to actually exist. This only made her parents more abusive, eventually getting to the point where they decided they didn't want her in their house anymore, and just dumped her on a random street to fend for herself.

After a couple of days, she was found by Dumbledore, who, upon realising that Ria was magical, convinced the Hogwarts headmaster to let Ria stay there for a little while. During this time, Dumbledore reached out to Newt and tried to convince him to permanently take the young girl in. It was only upon meeting Ria and seeing just how much she cared about the creatures of both the magical and Muggle worlds that Newt agreed, deciding to take her around the world with him so that they could work together to do the research for the book on magical creatures that Newt had just been commissioned to write.

Ria became very close to Newt, literally trusting him with her life on more than one occasion. When her Hogwarts letter came, she decided she'd rather keep travelling with him and be homeschooled than go to the school, since she didn't want to leave Newt, the creatures, or the travelling lifestyle she'd grown accustomed to.

During the events of FBAWTFT, Ria got caught up in all the shenanigans, eventually being sentenced to death by Grindelgraves alongside Newt and Tina. On her birthday. Because she was still struggling and trying to get away when the three of them were brought to the death potion, she was sent onto the floaty death chair first. She was rescued by Newt, and the events proceeded as they did in canon.
