Sickness and Secrets

Third Person's POV

"Ready?" A young brunette girl asked her mother as they stood in a forest.

The lady nodded and poured the purple dust into her hand.

"How does this work?" The lady asked her daughter.

"Just think about her and it should work." The young brunette explained.

The lady took a breathe and threw the dust into the air. It floated to the ground and created a big, brown door with a golden handle.

The lady opened the door and inside the doorway was a teenage girl with brown hair and brown eyes sitting on her bed. The lady was almost speechless at the sight of her eldest daughter and how beautiful she had become.

"Is that my sister, mom?" The young girl asked her mother, staring at her older sister.

"Yes, Jocelyn, that's Lindsey, your sister." The lady spoke breathlessly. "She's beautiful."

"Mom, let's not waste another second, we have to go see her." Jocelyn rushed her mother, ready to run through the door.

The lady, with the name Ashlyn, stopped her daughter and held her back. "We can't."

"Why not?" Jocelyn asked, glancing at her mother with confusion.

"She could be put in danger and I can't risk that." Ashlyn informed her daughter shaking her head. "We have to wait a little longer."

"Then why did you do this? Just to see what she looks like?" Jocelyn asked her mom, gesturing to Lindsey.

"I have my reasonings, Jocelyn." Ashlyn told her daughter who rolled her eyes.

"Like what? We don't know where the heck she is?" Jocelyn protested.

"We'll find out, sweetie. I can contact William to help." Ashlyn explained to her daughter.

"I thought you lost contact with him?" Jocelyn asked her mom.

"I did, but I was able to gain contact just recently. We are one stop closer to reuniting with our family."

Lindsey's POV

"So, when's your next visit, dad?" I asked my father. Daniel and I were video chatting with my father at the moment.

"I'm not sure, sweetie." My father sighed and I averted my eyes for a moment. "New recruits are coming in and we have to train them."

I haven't seen my father since we visited him in Italy which isn't that long ago, but I want him to come here so he can meet everyone.

"Linds, please don't be upset." My father pleaded. "I hate seeing my little superhero like this."

"I'm not upset. I just miss you." I shrugged.

"We both miss him, but he has a job to do and it's a very important one." Daniel rubbed my shoulders. "We have to be patient and wait."

I've waited way to long to be patient. I want my dad here.

"Hey, I'll see if I can get some time off and I'll inform you both if I can, okay?" My father asked us and we both nodded.

"Alright, dad, I love you." I told my dad and blew him a kiss.

"Love ya, dad." Daniel added.

"Love ya too, kiddos." My father told us before the call ended.

My body language seemed to catch my brother's attention and I heard him sigh.

"Lindsey, don't be so upset. You have your one year anniversary with Max tomorrow. You should be excited about that." Daniel smiled, nudging my shoulder.

A smile formed on my face when I thought about Max and I giggled.

"Oh yeah! It is tomorrow!"

I hopped off the stool and walked into the living room. Riceball ran up to me and I picked him up.

"Going to bed, Danny. Night!" I called to Daniel as I headed upstairs with my puppy.

"Night!"

——

I woke up the next morning with a sore throat and huge headache. I groaned softly and cuddled into my bed more.

"Oh, crap."

I slowly sat up and let out a loud cough. My voice was raspy and my mouth was dry. My head was pounding.

"Why today? Why?" I asked myself and cleared my throat.

I carefully got out of bed and put my glasses one before I trudged towards the bathroom. I looked into the mirror and let out a shriek.

"Oh, it's me." I spoke. "Forgot how ugly I look in the mornings."

Today I liked especially ugly, my face was pale and had bags under my eyes. I looked like I got hit by a bus and then died and then just came back to life but I feel like dying again.

I opened the drawer and pulled out the thermometer. I took my temperature and looked at the screen.

103.3

I groaned again but I coughed at the end.

I walked out of the bathroom and trudged downstairs. I heard barking behind me and saw Riceball behind me.

"Not now, boy. I'm sick." I told him, but he kept following me.

I walked into the kitchen and Daniel was eating breakfast.

"Hey baby sis, are you-Ahhh!"

Daniel noticed me and his eyes went wide.

"Don't say it. I know I'm sick." I snapped. I went over to the medicine cabinet and grabbed some Advil.

"You were fine yesterday. What happened?" Daniel asked with concern.

I poured some water into a cup and took the Advil.

"Who knows!" I exclaimed and let out a heavy sigh. "Looks like mine and Max's anniversary is off..."

Riceball noticed my sadness and licked my leg. I bent down and petted his fur.

"It's not till later right? What were you guys doing to do?" Daniel asked, standing up from the stool.

"I don't know, Max wanted it to be a surprise." I answered. "But whatever it is, we might have to cancel. Max will be so upset. I know he was excited about this."

"Maybe by tonight, you'll feel better." Daniel assured me as I stood straight up.

"Hopefully." I muttered. "I'm gonna go drown my sickness in tissues and ice cream."

I opened the freezer and took out the Oreo ice cream.

"Don't bother me!" I scolded my brother and left the kitchen. He seemed scared and let out a nervous laugh.

"Don't worry, I've learned my lesson."

I rolled my eyes and went up the stairs.

"Riceball!" I called and I heard tiny footsteps behind me.

"Woof!"

——

Two hours later

My eyes fluttered opened and I still felt the same as I did when I woke up this morning. I picked up my phone from my nightstand to check the time.

It was 1:00 pm. Max has texted me a few times and had called me in the two hour time period.

I let out a cough and sniffled. I decided to text Max back.

"Hey babe, I'm so excited about tonight. I'm so exited that I got sick...how unfortunate."

I sent the text and shut my eyes, feeling guilty about this whole thing. It's not my fault I got sick but on all days in the year it had to be this one. I feel like life hates me.

I sat up in my bed and placed my glasses back on. I felt so cold yet so hot, I hated it. My head was pounding and my throat hurt like crazy.

My phone buzzed and I felt my chest tighten. I hope Max isn't upset about this.

I opened the message.

"What? That's awful. I'm sorry baby, don't feel bad. It happens🖤"

A sense of relief rushed through me knowing he isn't mad and upset.

I texted back.

"Don't apologize, it's not your fault. I'm sorry we can't go on our date that you had planned. What should we do now?"

I waited for him to text back and petted Riceball to pass time.

He knew something was wrong with me and paid his fluffy head on my legs. I giggled and kissed his head.

"I'm fine, boy. Just sick that's all." I assured him.

About ten minutes had passed since I texted my boyfriend and I was getting worried.

"Why isn't he texting back?" I mumbled, checking my phone.

"Knock knock." I looked up and saw Daniel standing there. "You have a visitor."

He stepped back and the visitor revealed themselves. Max stood there with a basket in his hands, looking handsome as always.

I felt myself smile and Max returned it.

"Hey baby." He greeted and came to the side of the bed. Riceball got excited and greeted him. "Hey Riceball."

"Have fun you two." Daniel blurted out. "But not two much fun."

I looked away in embarrassment. "Bye Danny."

The door shut and I cleared my throat.

"How you feeling?" Max asked, sitting on the edge of the bed.

I gave him a look of 'did you really ask that?'

He realized and let out a small chuckle. "Dumb question."

"Yep." I said and let out cough. I whimpered when I felt it scratch my throat.

"My poor baby." Max cooed and crawled over next to me. He held me in his arms and kissed my temple. "I'm sorry."

I shook my head and placed my hands on his chest. "Don't be. I'm sorry for getting sick and not going on our date you had planned."

Max sighed. "It wasn't a huge date because I'm not much a fancy person and you aren't either. It would've just been going to the arcade and just being with each other."

I felt myself smile and laid my head on his shoulder. "Most girls would complain on how simple that is but that would've been perfect."

"And that's why I fell for you." Max told me sincerely and I looked up at him. He was about to kiss me but I turned my head. He complained and I giggled but ended up coughing into my arm.

"I can't get you sick. So no kisses." I told him and lifted my head up.

Max looked like a lost puppy when I said that. I glanced at Riceball and they looked similar because of the face Max made.

"Why? But kissing you is the highlight of my day!" He whined.

"If you want to get sick then we can but-"

Max caught me off with a kiss and caressed my cheek with his hand. I smiled and kissed back immediately.

Max pulled away a few moments later and gave me a smirk.

"Max Thunderman does not get sick."

I scoffed. "Last month you acted like a baby because you got bronchitis."

Max turned his head away and didn't reply.

"Max Thunderman does get sick. You know I'm right."

Max rolled his eyes and unwrapped his warm arms from me and got off my bed. I watched him pick up the basket he brought and placed it on my bed before he sat down in his original spot.

Riceball sniffed it and his tail wagged.

"I'm guessing it's food?" I wondered and Max nodded.

"Yep. I packed all your favorite foods in here." Max told me and opened the basket. Riceball tried to jump inside but I grabbed him and held him in my arms.

"You had your breakfast." I told my puppy and he licked my jaw.

I looked at Max and gave him a soft smile. "I really appreciate this Max. Who knew a villain could have a heart?"

Max rolled his eyes and looked at me. "Please my heart is a black as ever."

"Then how do you explain this nice gesture?" I teased with a giggle.

Max paused what he was doing and let out a small sigh. "Listen, don't tell anyone this but you're the only one who knows about my...sensitive side." Max looked uncomfortable saying that. "You're my girlfriend so of course I'm gonna be nice to you and do stuff like this."

I couldn't help but smile and grab his hand. "I'm glad I get to see this side of you. It shows me that you care and I love that."

Max gave me a grin in return and kissed my cheek.

"I'm gonna go use the bathroom." I told him and Max nodded.

I let go of my puppy and got off my bed. I left my room and went into the bathroom. I shut the door and leaned against the wall. I looked in the mirror and sighed.

Max just admitted something deep about himself and now I feel guilty. Max is not the touchy-feely type and that took a lot for him to confess that.

I'm holding back so many secrets about myself and I'm so scared to confess them. Max wouldn't judge me about my past and he might even be supportive of it.

Admitting it is difficult enough but just thinking about it makes me upset and angry. I will end up in tears if I speak of it.

That box I have is under my bed along with the journal I found. Max is literally on top of them at the moment and I could reveal everything.

I decided to leave the bathroom so Max doesn't get suspicious or worried.

I walked back into my room to find Max on his phone.

He quickly put his phone down and gave me a grin.

I gave him a confused look and smiled. "Hiding something from me?"

He scoffed and shook his head. "No, not at all."

I joined him on my bed and noticed Riceball was gone.

"Riceball went downstairs." Max told me, reading my thoughts.

I nodded and looked for my phone.

"Where's my phone?" I asked Max.

"Uh..." Max trailed off as I looked around for it. "Don't know."

I heard a familiar buzz that sounded like my phone. It continued to buzz and I looked at Max and down to his pants. His pants were buzzing.

"Max? Do you want to tell me something?" I asked with a stern look.

Max swallowed and glanced at his pants. "Like what? I don't have your phone."

"Don't lie to me. Give me my phone." I bitterly spoke and Max leaned back. He sighed with regret and pulled out my phone that was in his pocket.

"Max! Why did you have my phone?" I asked him, snatching it from him.

He stuttered over his words and shook his head with defeat. "You kept getting texts and I got upset so I checked your phone."

"Why? Do you not trust me?" I asked him, feeling betrayed. I can feel the jealousy radiating off Max along with regret.

Max gave me serious look. "Lindsey. I know guys at our school flirt with you and I do get jealous. I know you ignore them and all but I sometimes feel like you might leave me."

I was shocked. Is Max really this self conscious about himself when it comes to relationships?

I placed my hand on his cheek. "You know for someone so cute you worry way to much. I only like you Max and it gets unhealthy sometimes."

Max chuckled affectionately and I gave him a smile.

"You're the best girlfriend ever." Max smiled lovingly at me and I blushed. "I'm so glad you entered my life and I know I can trust you with any secret."

Max brought me into a hug and I felt my heart sink. I hugged back and I felt guilty again.

Trust. Secrets. Two things I have trouble with.

One day. One day I'll confess it all.
