First Day of the Arena (2)
Darkness is what surrounds us. We are helpless in this sense because we cannot see. How are we to know if we're killing our ally or enemy? Besides their screams as we drive our swords and daggers into their skin we cannot identify them. And by then it's too late.
I knew that Dayta my intelligent ally, yet clueless sister was on my right side. By her determination, I knew she was going to the cornucopia even though we were encompassed by murkiness. If she's going, so am I. Though she ruined my life, I know it wasn't entirely her fault and she is family so I want her safe. The count down caught my attention as the voice seemed to be coming from seemingly nowhere. I was ready and timid rolled into one.
As the last few numbers counted down, I got ready to run to the slightly illuminated cornucopia. As the voice welcomed us to our untimely deaths, I charged towards the cornucopia, knowing that Dayta will be there. She is already ahead of me, I can tell by the little bit of light bouncing off of her from the death trap with weapons.
She runs up and grabs twin daggers without any other tribute seeming to notice. They were already in the process of killing. I grab her arm to pull her away from the other tributes, forgetting she can't see me too well. She raised one of the dangers to strike. Just before she could bring it down I yelled, "No! Dayta, it's Troy! I'm not going to hurt you! We're in a alliance together!"
She let her arm fall down to her sides, and she hugged me as she said, "Troy don't scare me like that! I thought you were going to kill me."
I shake my head. And we began running again, out of the sight of the other tributes who were just waiting to get their hands on us. We escape through a hallway that was aglow with torches. I notice that we are in a castle. We never would have expected this. Well played Capitol. Well played.
We turn down yet another hallway until we lose track and stop. As we run, we hear endless cannons. What was worse is, This is a labyrinth that we can't get out of. Hopefully, No tribute is going to find us here. We stop and We sit in silence across from each other. Now was the time to ask about her family. My family.
I broke the silence with, "Hey, you know what will get our mind off of this? Talking about our families. You go first."
She sighed, "I have a nineteen year old sister. Her name is Deela. She took us in after my mom and dad died. She's always working but money is still tight. Then there's my little brother Dexter. He's five. He looks so much like my dad. The youngest is Drea. She's only a few months old. While Deela works, I'm raising Drea and Dexter. And I," she paused. Letting a few tears slide down her cheek. She went on, "I don't know what's going to happen to them if I die. Deela can't raise them."
My heart wrenched in pain and my stomach in knots. Maybe my father didn't have the perfect little family like I had suspected. She looked up at me, "What about you?"
Well just found out that I have four siblings, a dad, and a stepmother. Do I tell Dayta? Will she think I'm crazy? I'll tell her but now is not the right time. "It's just my mom and I. Always have been."
She shakes her head, "Your father wasn't around?"
I'll drop hints but won't come out and say the truth. Maybe she can figure out this way. Without me telling her. "No he wasn't. He had cheated on his wife with my mom. Of course my mom didn't know so when she found out, she ended it. She ended up pregnant with me while his wife was pregnant with my half sister and had already had another daughter with him a few years before. He stayed with his family and had no contact with me. He died recently anyway."
Dayta stared at me, he eyes wide. "Oh that's terrible! I'm so sorry. That man didn't deserve a family. The worst people always get the best and it's not fair."
She had no idea. I think I'll tell her now. "Dayta, you're my half sister."
