N I N E T E E N | ACQUIRING THE NICKNAME 'SPARKY'
"Hey, Raven said you'll know what to do with this."
Carter glanced up to see two boys carrying a large, heavy object between them; the control panel to the Pod. She smiled. "Yeah, just put it down there, I'll take it from here." The two boys did as she said and walked away, talking aimlessly amongst themselves.
Carter helped all she could with the dismantling scrap metal and various other materials off the Pod and then decided to hike it back to camp to get the launchers for the flares ready, while the others stayed back and got other materials.
She began to dismantle the control panel, when a familiar voice stopped her from working. "Need any help?"
"Sure. The quicker we can get this done, the quicker the Ark can see that we aren't dead." She murmered, not looking up from her work. Monty nodded and sat opposite her. They both worked in a content silence, only speaking when they needed to use a tool that wasn't in their reach. Rewiring a control panel to initiate the launch of rockets was a hell of a lot easier than trying to fix the wristbands, Carter noted.
Of course, her work didn't go without it's dangers and not long into molding two wires together, she got electrocuted.
"Ow!" She hissed, pulling her arm away from the naked wire and scowling hatefully at it. "Why is it always me to get electrocuted?"
"Because you're the only idiot to hold the exposed part of the wire." Monty snickered. He gestured with his head down to his own hands and Carter noticed that there was at least two inches in between Monty's fingers and the end of the wire. She always held it right to the tip to she had more control. Well, she found out where she was going wrong...
"Shut up." Her eyes narrrowed into a soft glare.
"Hey, did you put that map back?" Monty asked suddenly with a raised eyebrow. "The one I gave you to find Finn and Clarke?"
"What ma-- oh shit, no I forgot." Carter's eyes widened. She quickly scrambled to her feet and grabbed the back pack that was beside her. She threw a half-hearted "I'll be right back!" over her shoulder to Monty as she briskly walked through the heart of camp, she wanted to run but it was likely to draw too much attention. Once she arrived at the tent the map was originally in, she looked around cautiously to make sure no one was watching before she slipped in.
No one was in the tent, much to her advantage and Carter quickly undid her pack, snatching the map from inside of it. She laid it down on the table and took a step back to see if it was noticeable that it was even gone in the first place. Once she was satisfied, she turned around to make a sly exit-
-when she walked straight into someone's chest.
Carter stumbled back, trying to regain her balance and looked up to see who it was she just so happened to walk into. Bellamy. Of course, she thought bitterly. Of all the people who could have walked in, it just had to be him.
He looked from her to the map on the table and smirked. "So that's what happened to the map."
"Monty did it," Carter rushed out childishly. "I was just being a good friend and putting it back for him."
"Has anyone ever told you, you're a bad liar?" Bellamy quirked an eyebrow.
"Many times." Carter sighed with a flat look on her face, inwardly cursing at her incapability to lie. Dammit Carter. "So... is there a reason you're in here...?"
Bellamy studied her face for a few beats before nodding. "Yeah, actually I wanted to talk to you."
"Me? What did I do?"
"Earlier, back in the woods, you said you were threatened by someone which is the reason you can't say anything," Bellamy explained. "Who?"
With wide eyes, Carter grabbed his arm and pulled them both further away from the entrance of the tent and towards the back. "Keep your voice down!" She hissed. "It doesn't matter who threatened me. I already told you, I've got it under control."
"No you don't." Bellamy retorted without missing a beat. "If you did, you wouldn't be scared."
"I'm not scared." She lamely defended, mildly shocked he knew that. Ever since she was a kid, she had mastered the art of hiding her emotions. Not even her father or Finn knew how to look through her mask.
"Yes. You are," He argued. "I can see it on your face, Carter. Who was it?"
"Why do you care?" Carter snapped, suddenly feeling claustrophobic by Bellamy's piercing dark gaze. "I think we've already established you're a selfish son of a bitch otherwise why else would you have chucked the freaking radio?"
He opened his mouth to reply but quickly caught on to what he was about to say and closed it. He wanted to say he did care, he had no idea why, he just did. But this is Bellamy, he couldn't just outright say he cared about a girl that wasn't his sister. Especially Carter. The fact that she was threatened hung over his head all day and he felt an insane level of protection towards her. He just wished he knew why. "Who was it?" He tried again, noticing the lengthy silence that had fallen between them.
"It doesn't matter." She shot him down, pushing past him angrily.
"Was it Shumway?" He guessed. She stopped dead in her tracks, her back tensed and that was all he needed to know he was right. "What did he say?"
She turned around to face him again and pursed her lips as a desperate attempt to keep her expression void of emotion. "He would kill my dad if anyone finds out what he made you do." A pause. "He told me if I said anything, he would find out and... and I can't take that risk, Bellamy."
Bellamy nodded his head in acknowledgment and it didn't go unnoticed by Carter that his hands were clenched into fists by his side and how his jaw tightened. For a small second, Carter thought that maybe Bellamy did care about her, but the second she made sense of the sentence, she abolished it. Bellamy made it pretty he clear he cares for no one but himself and his sister.
"I need to contact my father, it's the only way I can warn him about Shumway." She whispered. "Please Bellamy, don't say anything to anyone."
"Hey Sparky! I need your help!" Monty hollered, breaking the tension between Carter and Bellamy. With a deep breath, Carter recomposed herself and sent Bellamy one more meaningful glance before exiting the tent and making her way back to Monty.
"What happened to 'I'll be right back!'?" Monty asked, his voice went into a high-pitched whine as he tried to imitate Carter.
She gasped, feigning the look of hurt. "I don't sound like that!"
"Wanna bet?" Monty teased, looking back down on the control panel which was now in one piece, lights flickering different colors. "So, I fixed it."
"No, we fixed it. All you had to do was screw it back together." Carter corrected. "Hardly rocket science."
"Actually, it kind of is." Monty smirked, earning a half-hearted glare from Carter. "Now stop slacking and help me connect it to the launchers."
"Sir, yes sir." Carter saluted mockingly before she began to help Monty wire the control panel to the make-shift launchers. The sun was already beginning to set for the night, so light was limited.
Once they both had finished wiring it all up and connected the control panel to a sturdier piece of wood, a warm orange glow lit up the camp and other camp members had already began to light up sticks, ready for the night.
"You didn't do a bad job, Sparky," Monty smiled as flicked a few buttons, ready for the missile launch. "Good work."
"Sparky?" Carter rose her eyebrows in amusement.
"Yeah, we've been down here less than two weeks and I've lost count to the amount of times you've electrocuted yourself. I think the nickname Sparky suits you."
"Whatever helps you sleep at night, Monty." Carter patted his shoulder playfully. Just as she was about to make a few minor tweaks to their, Carter saw Finn walk out of the camp, alone. It was her chance. Most of the day Finn was always around someone, specifically Raven, so Carter had to wait for the right moment to catch him. "Uh, I'll be right back," Carter mumured distantly.
"Yeah, I haven't heard that one before..." Monty scoffed, but Carter was already too far away to hear.
She followed Finn at a steady pace, careful to make no noise against the ground. Once they were a fair distance away from camp, Carter began to wonder where Finn was going. "Finn!" She called. She didn't want to wander too far because her navigation skills were terrible as it was, and that's when she was somewhat familiar with the terrain and there was light.
Startled, Finn span around on his heel, his eyes wide and his knife firmly in his hand. Upon seeing Carter, he frowned. How did he not hear her? He noticed her looking warily at the knife and he quickly tucked it back into his waistline. "Carter? What's up?"
"Is there anything you want to tell me, Finn?" She asked, her voice was sickly sweet as she advanced towards him.
"Uh... no?" Finn knitted his eyebrows together in confusion and Carter swallowed the urge to scoff.
"Really? So you don't want to tell me anything?" She paused. "Not even about you and Clarke last night?"
Finn's expression dropped as well as Carter's. Her sweet demeanour turned sour. He quickly masked up his shock and tried muster a smile, although it was more like a grimace. "I don't know what your talking about."
"Oh come on, really? That's the most cliché thing you could ever say in this situation." Carter rolled her eyes. "She told me, Finn. Clarke told me that you two had sex last night, so you can't even bullshit your way out of this one. She also told me that she didn't know you had a girlfriend... But you told me she knew about Raven."
Finn winced as he saw the betrayal and anger flicker in Carter's eyes. "Carter, you don't understand, I didn't think I would ever see Raven again. You know I wouldn't do anything to hurt her."
"You had every intention on sleeping with Clarke, didn't you? That's why you never mentioned Raven and then to make sure I didn't say anything you told me that she already knew." Carter summed up, a light humourless laugh escaped her lips. "So you lied to me. Your best friend. I thought I knew you better than that."
"Carter, I nev-"
"- And do you know what makes it worse? Not the fact that you deceived Clarke and I, not the fact that you lost your virginity to a girl that's not your girlfriend. You decided to do all of this on the night Charlotte died. While I was mourning her death you were happy to shack up with Clarke."
"No, it never happened like that! Please, Carter. I never meant for any of this to happen. I knew I shouldn't have lied to you but-"
"But what?" Carter interjected, her voice low and full of disgust. "You didn't want me ruining your chances of getting lucky, is that it?"
"No! I don't know why I did it, okay? I would never do anything to ruin our friendship, Carter. You're like an annoying little sister that I constantly worry about, and I love you for that. Last night shouldn't have happened, but it did. I can't change that. I honestly thought I would never see Raven again. I know that's no excuse, but it's the truth."
Carter stared at him carefully, judging whether he was telling the truth or not. She couldn't find any element of a lie in his face and at that she felt the slightest relieved. She was still beyond pissed at him for the shit choices he made, but they had so much history together and Finn had played such a significant role in her childhood, she couldn't just cut him out-- even if she wanted to. After a few short moments, she sighed. "Whatever. But you have to tell Raven. Like hell are you getting away with this."
Finn pursed his lips and nodded. "I will tell her, just... just not right now. Let her have some happiness, it is her first day on the ground. We should give her that."
"When?"
"Tomorrow. I promise."

Their walk back to camp was silent. Finn knew Carter was still mad at him, he could tell by the way her body was rigid and her jaw was clenched. Guilt poured over him at her previous words, at the obvious betrayal she felt.
Because of him.
He couldn't bring himself to tell her what his night of passion was like with Clarke, and that his feelings for her only grew bigger with every waking minute. He knew if he told Carter that, she would only hate him more. He couldn't blame her. Carter relied on loyalty and trust, something that can be broken with a simple lie-- as he found out-- but she was also fiercely protective of those she cared about. And she cared about Raven and Finn.
Whatever situation Finn had himself tangled in, affected her and she was torn.
Picking a side was definitely not an option. She couldn't do that to them. The only thing left for her to do was take a step back and keep her head down and her mouth shut. The latter being the hardest to control.
Once they were both back in the safety of camp, darkness had envaloped them but the camp was alight with the orangey glow of torches. People were rushing around as they made the final preparations for the launch.
"Hey there you two are!" Raven approcached them with a smile. "I was wonderin' where you went." The tension between Carter and Finn didn't go unnoticed and Raven narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "Is everything okay?"
"Everything's fine." Finn forced a smile and slung an arm over his girlfriend's shoulders. Raven wasn't fully convinced and looked to Carter.
"Why wouldn't it be?" Carter offered her friend a tight lipped smile. She felt wrong for knowing what Finn did. "All three of us are back together, eh?" Out of the corner of her eye, Carter noticed the Hundred had already began to gather around the rockets and quickly used that as an excuse to drop the subject. "We better go, they're getting ready."
They dispersed once they hit the group, considering she was one of the only people that knew how to lauch the rockets, Carter made her way to the control panel she and Monty had been working on while Finn and Raven found a place where they could watch the rockets, almost romantically.
"Hey Carter!" Jasper called, beckoning his friend over to where he stood with Monty. She smiled as she approached them. "You sure about this? Because it can either go really well, or it can go kaboom in our faces and you will be responsible for a lot of deaths."
"No pressure or anything," Carter muttered sarcastically. "Yes, I'm sure. Now move your ass, I've got a job to do." Jasper gave her a small smile and moved to the side, allowing Carter to pass.
A sequence of buttons were pressed and she flicked a switch. Before Carter pressed the button that would ultimately lauch the rockets, she hesitantly looked up. Bellamy was stood a few paces away from her and nodded his head slightly, giving her the reassurance she needed. With a deep breath, Carter squeezed her eyes shut as her finger pushed down on the button. For a second, her muscles tensed until she heard the firey woosh of the rockets followed by the Hundred cheering awe.
"You did it!" She heard the familiar voice of Clarke and turned to face her.
"Let's just hope they see it in time." Carter's lips tugged into a smile. "Hey, do you share a tent with anyone?"
"No, why?"
"Because I have a feeling Raven and Finn are gonna need their own space." Catter shuddered an answer. Clarke's face fell slightly, but Carter didn't notice. They both walked further into the crowd, stopping beside Bellamy.
"Sure, you can share with me." Clarke smiled weakly. Carter nodded her head gratefully and they both turned their attention to the mesmerizing red glow of the rockets as they cut through the darkness of the sky. Under different circumstances, Carter would have found the whole thing magical. But knowing it was to stop the culling of three-hundred people was enough to dampen the beauty of it.
"You think they'll see it from up there?" Bellamy asked, his eyes still fixated on the sky.
"I dunno, I hope so." Clarke answered from beside Carter. There was a brief pause before she spoke again. "Can you wish on this kind of shooting star?"
Carter smiled sadly to herself. She knew about shooting stars. She found it silly how their ansetors used to wish upon a burning rock, but it gave them hope. And that's what she needed. Bellamy, however, didn't understand it and side-glanced at Clarke in confusion.
"Forget it." The blond shook her head.
"I wouldn't even know what to wish for." Bellamy replied grimly. Carter didn't know what urged her to do it, maybe it was a need some kind of physical comfort so she knew she wasn't alone, but without a logical thought, she clasped onto Bellamy's hand tightly. He tensed at the sudden touch, both of them feeling that odd warmness under the skin, and he looked down at their hands. Carter's cheeks heated as she realized how stupid that move was.
That was until she felt him squeeze back. Neither said anything, neither pulled away. They both just stared up at the rockets with hope that they could save their people.
