E L E V E N | THE FAMILY SONG
"Seventy-two bottles of beer on the wall, seventy-two bottles of beer. Take one down and pass it around, seventy-one bottles of beer on the wall, seve-"
"-You're killing me." Monty groaned loudly from the corner of the room. Carter mock gasped and he sent her a flat look. "That's, what, the forth time you've sang that damn song."
"I'm bored..." Carter defended lamely, her eyes trained down on her two feet.
"What is that song anyway? I've never heard it." Octavia asked from her position next to Jasper. None of them had left the second level of the drop ship since Murphy's outburst and Carter was desperate to get out. Not only for the sake of her sanity, but because she wanted to find Finn and Charlotte. She figured that hours had passed since someone shouted that the acid fog had passed and the Hundred left the drop ship. But none of them budged, not until they were sure Murphy wouldn't try to kill Jasper.
"I don't know," Carter shrugged, her eyes still glued to her feet as she limped slowly from one end of the drop ship to the other, trying to train her injured foot to walk again. "My grandparents on my mother's side used to sing it to me."
"Were they big drinkers by any chance?" Monty asked, the ghost of an amused smile tugged at his tired lips.
"My Grandpa was," Carter nodded her head vigorously. "He used to have a secret stash of scotch in his room." She chuckled lightly to herself. "Said that his parents took the liberty of taking their whole bar on the Ark with them."
"Sounds like he was fun at parties." Octavia mused with a grin. She then noticed what Carter was doing and frowned. "What would Finn say if he saw you trying to walk without a crutch?"
Carter stopped and dramatically turned her head to face Octavia with a pointed look. "Finn is not here."
"Look at you being all rebellious," Octavia snorted. "Who would have thought you were Councilman Kane's daughter."
Carter smiled as a sudden surge of happiness ran through her. "That's exactly what my mother used to say." She sighed with content at the memory of her mother teasing her and went back from limping from one side to the other. It shocked her how easy it was to walk on her bad foot and when Octavia checked it and re-bandaged it, she said how well it was healing. Carter shook away the memory and continued limping. "Seventy-one bottles on the wall, Seventy-one bottles-" Both Octavia and Monty groaned over dramatically, causing Carter to smirk and sing louder.
"Hey everybody, they're back!" An unfamiliar voice sounded through the vents. Carter paused and exchanged wide-eyed looks with Octavia as they both scurried towards the hatch. Octavia was the first to climb down, Carter hot on her tow-- slower as she still didn't trust her injured foot.
"Yeah, it's okay guys, I'll stay up here-- I don't mind!" Monty called after them sarcastically with a huff. He looked to his best friend and half smiled. "Girls. What you gonna do?"
Carter limped her way out and picked up her speed the second she saw Finn. She ran straight into him and enveloped him in a hug. It took him by surprise at first, but he smiled and picked her up, hugging her tightly. "Thank God you're safe," he whispered with relief.
"Ditto." Carter replied with a giant smile. He put her back down and examined her with a sudden frown.
"Where are your crutches?"
"They were getting in the way," Carter brushed him off. "It's okay, I can walk on both feet. Kind of."
"... Yeah, I got it. Come on let's go talk." Carter turned her attention to Clarke and Octavia, the former trying to lead the latter away. There was sadness in Clarke's voice that peaked Carter's full attention. Octavia held up her index finger, singling for a minute and wiggled out of Clarke's grip as she walked towards her brother.
"Octavia," Bellamy looked up from what he just laid on the floor. "Just- just stay there." Carter took a tentative step forward and suppressed as gasp as she realized that it was someone's body underneath the coat.
"Stop," Octavia shrugged him off with annoyance as she crouched down, cautiously taking the coat off the person's face. Her face dropped. "Atom..." she breathed in despair. His skin was burned and sported boils and blood, Carter could only guess he got caught in the acid fog. She remembered Octavia babbling on about an Atom (which Carter mistook for Adam, you know, a normal name,) her face contorted into a forlorn expression as she tried to keep her tears at bay. Carter's heart panged for her.
"There was nothing I could do-" Bellamy began, but was immediately shot down my Octavia.
"-Don't." She seethed, looking back down at Atom with a trembling lip. She took a shaky hand and recovered his face with the jacket before standing to her feet.
"O, O wait-" Bellamy tried again, but Octavia shoved her way past him.
"-Don't!" She hissed, storming away into the drop ship. Bellamy's eyes followed his sister until she disappeared and Carter couldn't miss the flicker of hurt that crossed his face. Her curiosity bubbled and she turned her attention back to Finn.
"What happened to him?"
"Got caught in the acid fog. Clarke said that he begged to be killed but Bellamy couldn't go through with it so she did." Finn answered in a quiet voice, not wanting anyone else to hear. Carter nodded her head in acknowledgement and turned back to Bellamy who was talking to Murphy.
"We lose anyone here?" Bellamy asked his second-in-command somewhat distantly.
"None."
"Jasper?"
"He's still breathing- barely," Murphy glanced at Carter sidelong bitterly. "I was gonna take him out but your psycho little sister an-"
He was abruptly cut off as Bellamy shoved him forcefully, before grabbing a fistful of Murphy's collar and bringing him closer. "My what? My what?!" Bellamy bellowed in such a rage Carter's eyes widened and she took a step closer to Finn, intimidated by Bellamy's sudden mood swing.
She watched intently as Murphy's expression almost looked bored, like he wasn't even phased about Bellamy being extremely pissed at him. "Your little sister," Murphy corrected himself, his voice void of emotion.
"Yeah, that's right, my little sister," Bellamy released Murphy's collar and took a step back, his voice was low and almost calm but his demeanor said anything otherwise. "You got anything else you wanna say about her?"
Murphy gritted his teeth and stared Bellamy dead in the eye. "Nothing. Sorry." He apologized begrudgingly. Carter could practically see that he didn't mean it. Most of the camp could. Bellamy took a step back and looked around at all the people that had gathered around them. When his eyes met the even stare of Carter's his gaze lingered before he looked down to the floor and then up at one of the guys stood beside him.
"Get him out of here." He instructed and the guys got straight on the task of taking Atom's body away. Bellamy looked back at Murphy with a cold expression before he turned away and left completely.
She knew she shouldn't have, but she found herself admiring Bellamy more for his sudden outburst. She knew she should have disapproved it, but his insane loyalty to his sister was something Carter found interesting. He was ready to beat the shit out of Murphy just for calling Octavia a psycho. Carter found herself inwardly smiling which was the opposite of what she should have done.
"Hello, earth to Bambi," Finn waved his hand in front of Carter's face, ultimately snapping her away from her thoughts.
"Wh-what?" She asked, blinking several times at Finn to help her focus.
"I said, was everything back here okay?"
"Oh, uh, well apart from Murphy going all crazy and wanting to kill Jasper and the fact that ninety-something of us was shoved into that god damn drop ship... yeah, it was okay," Carter concluded with a shrug. Finn opened his mouth to give her a smart-ass comment but she was already talking again. The atmosphere around her had shifted and her eyes were fearfully wide, every muscle in her body tensed. "Finn, please tell me you know where Charlotte is." Her eyes scrutinized the camp thoroughly in search for the small blond, but came to no avail.
"She was with Bellam-" Before he could even get the rest of the sentence out, she had darted off the way she saw Bellamy go. Her foot emitted a dull pain but adrenaline numbed it, her focus was soley on finding out where Charlotte was. When she saw Bellamy's tent come in to view, she darted in, not even bothering to knock or make her presence known, and saw him pacing back and forth, his running running through his hair in frustration. He didn't even know he had a visitor until an alarmed feminine voice ran through his ears.
"Where's Charlotte?"
He turned around and met Carter's wild, if not terrified, gaze and frowned. "She should be in camp."
"She's not," Carter shook her head. "I've looked." She felt a bile rise in her throat as she became more and more frustrated. She grabbed at the talons of hair beside her temples and pulled them whilst she tried to suppress the urge to scream. Carter wasn't sure why she felt so much when it came to that little girl, all she knew was that she did and she wanted to know Charlotte was safe.
Bellamy took a step forward and placed his hand on her forearm in a somewhat successful attempt to calm her down. "Hey, calm down, I'm sure she's okay. She couldn't have gone far the only place she knows is camp."
Carter's eyes snapped open and she met Bellamy's dark orbs. "I know where she is!" Without further words, Carter bolted out of the tent and towards the treeline. She knew the route well after taking it several times so she managed to dodge several trees even in the dark, but she still tripped over the uneven terrain. It didn't stop her though and when she saw the dim green glow she had became accustomed to seeing, she picked up in speed and tore her way through the shrubbery, coming to a halt as soon as she saw Charlotte's small frame slouched by the water from the waterfall, her feet was kicking slowly in the water and her face was scrunched up as she had an internal battle with herself.
"Charlotte," Carter breathed a sigh of relief as she ran towards the little girl and enveloped her in a hug. Charlotte was started by the sudden act of affection at first but soon hugged Carter back her small arms wrapped tightly around Carter's middle.
"H-how did you find me?" Charlotte asked with a frown.
"It's the kind of place you come to think." Carter shrugged before pulling away and holding Charlotte and arms length, her green eyes were alight with curiosity and concern-- something she wasn't used to feeling. "What was you thinking about?"
"I was just thinking about my nightmares," Charlotte shifted her eyes to the mossy ground beneath their feet. "But it's okay, I know what to do now." Before Carter could persue in any more questions, a snapping twig from behind them caught her attention and she turned to see Bellamy looking around at the waterfall and scenery with awe. His eyes fell down to Charlotte who was planted beside Carter and relief pooled in his eyes.
"Charlotte, why didn't you go back to camp like I asked?" He took a few steps closer to them, his eyes still trained on the little girl.
"I needed to think and I can't think with that boy screaming." She answered timidly.
He nodded and then looked up to Carter. "How did you find this place?"
"... It's a long story," Carter lamely replied. She looked back down at Charlotte and asked, "You ready to go back to camp now?" Charlotte nodded and as Carter went to follow the girl, she hissed as a sharp sting rippled through her foot. Now that the adrenaline had faded, she could feel everything. Carter knew she hadn't reopened the wound otherwise she would feel a hell of a lot more than a sting.
Bellamy noticed her face contort in pain and sighed. He walked over to her and wrapped her arm around his shoulders and placed his other hand on her waist. "Before you reject my help, just know that you'll have to navigate your way back in the dark with an injured foot on your own, because I sure as hell am not waiting for you and neither is Charlotte."
"Jeez, someone's gotten used to bossing people around..." Carter trailed off. In truth, she was never going to reject his help, she didn't fancy being stranded in the middle of the woods especially with the thought of Grounders lurking in the shadows. They both kept their eyes trained on Charlotte's small silhouette which was a few paces ahead of them. "I guess I should thank you," Carter muttered, breaking the silence.
"For what?"
"For making sure Charlotte didn't end up like Atom," Carter felt Bellamy tense beside her but she continued to talk regardless. "Why was she even with you? I thought you took a group hunting."
"I did," Bellamy nodded despite that she couldn't see it. "She turned up out of nowhere and almost got an axe through her head," he sighed. "Then when the acid fog came we hid in a cave. Did you know she has nightmares?"
"Yeah," Carter answered with hesitation. "I've spoken to her about it, but hell, who doesn't have nightmares?"
"Do you?" Bellamy asked curiously.
"Every night." Carter nodded. Another silence overtook them and Carter was desperate to change the subject. She had no idea why she told Bellamy that, especially because she had a strict rule on telling people about her weaknesses. "Anyway, about the waterfall clearing... I guess you're in on the secret now so that means you have to keep your mouth shut about that place, okay? It's my only escape from camp and Finn's smothering so I don't want to turn up there one day to see you with one of your many 'partners'..." She trailed off with a shudder, "Especially since it's now where Charlotte goes. I don't even care that you're the new leader of this so called camp, if I find out you've told anyone about that place, so help me God I'll-"
"-You're secrets safe with me." Bellamy interjected before she could truly threaten him. He had to bite his bottom lip just to stop himself from laughing at her. He was at least half a head taller than her and there was no doubt that he could over power Carter, yet he still knew that if pushed, Carter will attack and not fairly either.
"Good." Carter nodded her head once with an amused smile. "Now let's just get back to camp before I pass out from exhaustion."
