Chapter Four

Today was the day I go back to school. I was in the hospital for at least a week all because of that nuisance. Earl was worried I'd pass out from my concussion but I told him there was no need for it. I'll be fine, it's just a bump in the head. I made it to the school gates. There I saw her standing by the entrance holding a wrapped present. I made a long sigh and ignored her presence. She tried to keep up with me and kept saying my name to get my attention. She kept doing this for 5 minutes. I eventually turned around.

"What?!" I yelled. She jumped back at my harsh greeting. She looked sad and teary eyed. I stared blankly at her waiting for her response. All she did was shove the gift at me and run off. What a nuisance. I sighed once more as I shoved the gift in my bag and went to class. The rest of the day was pretty normal. Nothing felt wrong with me, all my teachers were still as boring as ever, and I was still neglecting everyone else's presence. The only difference was the amount homework I was given to make up for my absence. When I arrived home Earl was making dinner.
"Um...Earl, you don't have to make dinner. I can make like usual." I said, attempting to take the wooden spoon away. He snatched it away from my reach and shook his head.

"No, no, no. You just got out of the hospital and the doctor said you should rest when you have the chance."

I sighed and went upstairs to my room. I sat at my desk and worked on my homework. It took me hours to finish but I was able to get it all done. As I was packing my bag I had noticed the unopened gift Sarah gave me. I took it out and opened it. Inside was an apologetic card:

I'm sorry for injuring you. I was running to school. When I noticed you, I wanted to say 'hello' but I ended up tripping and giving you a concussion. Please forgive me and my clumsiness. I understand if you don't want to accept my apology. But the least you could do is open my gift.
~Sarah Collins

I placed the card down on my desk and dug around for the gift. It was a pair of red gloves. They were nice wool gloves and they seemed to fit me perfectly. But why gloves? I looked back at the card and notice the writing on the back.

P.s. Winter is coming soon so I thought you could use some gloves to wear. I made them myself, I hope they fit.

I smiled slightly. I've never gotten a gift from someone beside Earl but his gifts were usually just out of pity and sympathy for not being there for my mother and I. I guess she's not as big of an idiot as I thought she was.
