Chapter 26: An Outsider (Part 1)
A/N: Wanted to post this earlier this week, but I had a hard time putting the scenes together. The last, this and the next chapter are all a bit tricky because of the interrogation stuff.
Anyways, enjoy more angst <3
Chapter summary: Mahito has successfully framed Megumi for attempted sexual assault.
Megumi and Yuuji are in despair. Yuuji suggests reaching out to a certain person.
-------------
"Yuuji! Once the fingerprint and blood results are back and the content of the container was analyzed-together with Mahito's blood test-and Junpei's and Uraume's testimonies-and the fact that I don't have an alibi-" Megumi gasped for air; he had difficulties saying it out loud himself, "it's more than enough for a police charge. Even if the charges are dropped later or whatever, the evidence is definitely enough to kick me out of med school!!"
-----
Yuuji was looking at Megumi silently - dangerously silently. The calmness he was exuding was palpable.
"I'm gonna kill him." His words were carried by a lethal tone.
"What?"
"I'm gonna fucking kill Mahito!!"
Yuuji was already by the door, hand on the door handle.
"No!"
Megumi had acted quickly too, pulling Yuuji's arm to keep him in place.
"Don't go to him. Don't do anything! If you do something now, things will get worse! Don't make it worse for me!"
"It can't get worse than this! I'm gonna make his pathetic mouth confess to everything! That fucking bastard!"
"Don't go! If you hurt him, it will play into him! He's the official victim! If you beat him up now, Mahito will run to Nanami. He'll play victim again and things will look even worse for me! Think about how Nanami will judge the whole thing! Do you really think he'll be on my side after something like this?!"
"You didn't do it! I'm gonna force Mahito to admit the truth!"
"He'll never admit it, if you threaten him! Beating him up will backfire!! Don't do that, Yuuji! I'm already at a disadvantage! I'm already painted in a bad spotlight! Don't do it, Yuuji! It'll make me look bad! Don't make it worse for me! Please, Yuuji!!! Acting on impulse is the worst we could do right now!!"
"But you didn't do it!"
"I know!"
Yuuji turned hastily around, ripping his arm off Megumi's grip.
"What are we supposed to do then?? Tell me! I can't stay here and do nothing!!!"
Megumi had both of his arms raised, frantically gauging whether Yuuji was going to run off any second or not. He talked with his face; pleading eyes and stress painted all over. Yuuji stayed in place, highly irritated, fists shaking with wrath and lips pressed together; his hatred for Mahito was endless, and Megumi went over to calming himself down to a certain degree.
Megumi let some time pass, silently watching Yuuji's angered face. He then turned around making his way to his bed.
"Hold on. Lemme think. I need to think ..."
Megumi sat down, running his hands over his face until they were covering all of his mouth. His lips were parted under his palms, his breath shallow as all of the despair was visiting him yet again.
He released his hands from his face.
"I have no alibi. No one saw me. No one."
Yuuji came up with a 'solution' quickly.
"I'll give you an alibi. I'm the one who saw you studying when that shit with Mahito allegedly happened."
"Yuuji, you were meeting up with pharm students for hours at that time. There are so many people who can testify to that! Please, I can't afford myself to sound even less credible that I do already."
Yuuji felt like being in a predicament. He wanted to help Megumi so badly. He had to help Megumi. Those were his true feelings.
Despite the interrogation being over for a while, it was only now that Megumi realized the sheer magnitude of the whole matter. The realization was raining down on him mercilessly.
He was accused of attempted sexual assault.
He gave testimony that contained contradictions.
There were false evidences incriminating him.
Megumi Fushiguro's future as a medicine student and medical doctor was in the hands of a stranger - the president of the university, Professor Kento Nanami.
Professor Nanami was the one to decide what would happen to Megumi soon.
As Megumi thought about that, anxiety climbed up his throat and swelled uncomfortably. He couldn't help but feel terribly anxious about his uncertain future. Yuuji witnessed all of that of course, focusing on nothing else than being by Megumi's sight and comforting him. He sat down next to his boyfriend.
"Meg ..."
Yuuji stroked both of Megumi's arms soothingly. Megumi's mouth opened and closed repeatedly, his thoughts a mess and the words twisted on his tongue.
"I don't get it! How did he do that?! No, no. I know how he did it." Megumi rubbed his hands over his face a few times, frenzied. "But how did he do it in such a way that it worked?! Where did he even get the confidence from to plan everything out and act on it?!"
Yuuji's moving hands stopped on Megumi's arms slowly and his face grew guilty.
"It's my ... I should have been more cautious about not losing my key ..."
"No. No. Don't say that. Don't say that, Yuuji. If they hadn't gotten your key, they'd have found another way to break into our room."
Yuuji chewed on his bottom lip, his arms going to Megumi's shoulders.
"What shall we do? What can we do?"
"I can only wait until the next meeting with Nanami."
Upon realizing that, Megumi became more desperate. He was sure that he had no possibilites left to change his fate.
Yuuji's grip on Megumi's shoulders went a bit firmer.
"This is such fucked up shit. How did they know that you wouldn't have an alibi??"
Megumi thought about that question for a while.
"They didn't exactly know, but they chose Sunday in the afternoon for a reason. Chances were higher that barely anyone would be in the hallway, possibly seeing me. And they chose a time where they knew that you would be gone away from the dorms for sure. You were meeting up other pharm students. So many saw you. That way you can't give me a fake alibi. They took that into account."
Yuuji remembered what Megumi had told him about why he was lured outside of their room in the first place.
"The little container they hid here ... It was the same one that was in your hand at our joint class before Mahito took it back, right?"
Megumi nodded.
"It has my fingerprints on them and they put a bit of the drug inside that Mahito used to drug himself with."
"Alright! I will tell Nanami that! I was a witness! I saw that happen in the joint class. Mahito was wearing gloves and all that stuff. That's not normal. You told Nanami about that incident, too, right?"
Megumi had to recollect some of his memories.
"I think ... I didn't go as much into details. I just told him that Mahito made me touch that little container without me suspecting anything."
"That's not enough! Tell him every single thing that happened at that joint class! I will do that, too!"
Megumi was averse towards that idea.
"I won't go back to Nanami to explain more stuff."
Yuuji couldn't believe it.
"Why not?!"
Megumi stood up fast and abruptly, his senses agitated.
"You know what I asked him at the end?? I asked him, if we can start over with the interrogation! That's the most stupid thing I could have ever done! Nanami won't believe anything anymore that I might want to add! I already lost all of my credibility!"
"I will go to Nanami then and tell him my part of this whole thing!"
"I'll go with you!"
Yuuji's answer was left unsaid as he didn't want to utter it out loud. He scrunched up his nose and ground his teeth.
Megumi had a hunch, so he wouldn't let Yuuji go out of this room alone. He grabbed one of Yuuji's arm and hugged it tightly, looking at his boyfriend with determined fierceness.
"I will go with you."
***
Megumi was waiting next to Professor Nanami's office, arms crossed in front of his chest, restless. Yuuji was currently inside, giving his own testimony.
Megumi had a bad feeling about that. When Yuuji came out of the office and closed the door a bit harsher than what was appropriate, Megumi already knew.
The big frown on Yuuji's forehead was only adding to Megumi's suspicions.
"What did he say?"
"That my testimony is taken note of."
Yuuji paused for a moment, frowning.
"Did he ask any question?"
Yuuji shook his head. Then, he looked at Megumi sadly - sheepishly.
"That's not ... a good sign, is it?"
Megumi felt a pang in his chest, seeing how Yuuji was growing helpless. He slowly shook his head, saddened.
"I don't think so ..."
"Fuck."
Megumi knew what this meant.
"The only thing we can hope for is Nanami realizing that I'm saying the truth and not Mahito ..." he said and didn't sound hopeful at all.
Yuuji clenched his hands into fists until they shook.
Megumi grabbed Yuuji's arm once more and gently guided him back to the boys dormitory building. Yuuji feeling this helpless made Megumi realize that he couldn't do anything about that.
Not much later, Megumi's hunch turned out to be true and it was a good thing that he went with Yuuji because once they had gone past the entrance door of the dormitory building, Yuuji tried to free himself from Megumi's grasp and make a sprint.
Yuuji didn't even know which room Mahito's was, but that didn't matter to him right now. He would find his room and he would beat the shit out of him. That was what he wanted to do.
Megumi, however, had seen that coming, so he had made sure that his grip on Yuuji's arm had been firm and that he had stayed on alert ever since being close to the dormitory building.
He pulled Yuuji back, hindering him from dashing away and making a mistake.
"Let go!" Yuuji protested stubbornly.
"No!"
And Megumi held his boyfriend back, telling him once more why this was a bad idea and pointing out again that beating Mahito up would make things worse for him.
Yuuji thought that beating up that cruel devil would make things better, but the more he was held back, the more he had to listen to Megumi's desperate pleas.
Yuuji was weak to the voice of Megumi's despair. He couldn't listen to Megumi for long without feeling anything.
In the end, he refrained from paying Mahito's room a visit (today?). But he insisted on asking everyone who was living on the same floor as them, if they - by any chance - had seen Megumi in the hallway near the communal bathroom last Sunday in the afternoon.
Megumi agreed.
They went from door to door, asking every single tenant. Since it was late in the evening, every dorm room was occupied by at least one person.
No one saw Megumi that day.
Most of them weren't even sure, if they'd ever seen Megumi before. Others hadn't been at the dormitories last Sunday. And a few more hadn't left their room at that time.
This was depressing - more to Megumi than to Yuuji, however Yuuji was the one who felt like he needed to take action in some kind of way.
When there were only a few more students left to ask, Yuuji would subtly ask them if they would tell a little untruth to the president of the university, if money would await them at the end.
Megumi shut that suggestion off quickly and - for better or for worse? - none of them agreed to that anyway.
A hopeless case.
***
It was the next day, in the morning.
Yuuji was about to leave the room.
"Don't go, Yuuji."
Megumi's weak voice sounded off behind him.
Yuuji's hand halted on the door handle. He turned around, hesitantly. Yuuji glanced at his boyfriend, painfully torn between leaving and staying. His emotions said to leave and do the thing, his conscience said to stay and console his boyfriend. He blinked at Megumi, watched him; how he was sat up on his bed, his body semi-hidden by his blanket, looking worn out.
Yuuji and Megumi had slept in one bed last night, both of them having been awake for a lot of hours while making sure the other wouldn't notice that.
The fatigue was starkly visible on Megumi's face.
"I want to go and grab us some breakfast," was Yuuji's excuse, his voice gentle and kind. "I'll be right back. You need to eat something. Me too."
"Stay here with me, please," Megumi highlighted his plea.
Yuuji remained silent for a while. He knew, and Megumi knew.
"You're saying that because you don't want me to go to Mahito."
"Yes. And I know you want to do exactly that right now." Megumi made a pause. "Stay."
"I can't. I can't! I need to fucking deal with that piece of shit!"
Megumi looked incredibly sad and Yuuji fell into silence.
"Stay here. Don't go to Mahito," Megumi begged.
Yuuji's lips twitched.
"Okay."
"Promise it."
Yuuji scoffed bitterly, as though he had heard the most ridiculous joke in the whole world just now. Megumi, however, was dead serious.
Yuuji's scoff fainted to nothingness. Unable to take in that sight anymore, he turned around - turned his back to Megumi.
"Promise it," came the repeated plea.
Yuuji rubbed his face with both hands, groaning exasperatedly.
"Promise me that you won't go to Mahito, Junpei or Uraume and that you won't harm them and that you won't threaten them. Not now or later or ever."
Yuuji raised his head, still facing the door.
"Fine."
"Fine what?"
Yuuji sucked in air, taking a deep breath.
"I promise," Yuuji muttered almost inaudibly.
"Promise what?"
Yuuji threw his hands in the air. He couldn't get out of this to his liking anymore.
"I promise that ..." He hesitated, chewing on those nasty words before he would have to spit them out. "I promise that I won't go to Mahito, Junpei or Uraume and that I won't harm them and that I won't threaten them. Not now or later or ever ... There. I said it. Happy now?"
Despite Yuuji's promise, Megumi was far from happiness.
***
Megumi didn't attend any of his classes. Yuuji didn't either the next two days, staying with Megumi in their room the whole time, unless he picked up some food for them. Nobara and the others from the friends group were sending them worried messages, but neither of the two would tell them what was up - simply stating that they were busy with other stuff. They didn't accept any visits from their friends, wanting to be left alone.
At some point, Megumi told Yuuji to visit his classes. It was Megumi who was the accused one, so he felt guilty about seeing Yuuji skip his lectures as well. It didn't feel right to Megumi after a few days. Yuuji didn't want to leave, but Megumi somehow managed to convince him.
Yuuji attending his classes bore a high risk because Mahito was in every of his classes, too. He had promised not to do anything and Megumi could only hope that nothing was going to happen.
That morning where Yuuji went to one of his classes again after days of not attending, he went back to his dorm room despite his first class not having ended yet.
"I can't do this!" Yuuji yelled as soon as he was back in his room, slamming the door behind him loudly. "I can't sit in the same class as those three and have them in my vicinity and think about them and pretend that nothing has happened and not do anything! I can't pretend that everything is okay! I can't! I can't go to any of my classes until everything is cleared up!!"
Megumi was lying in his bed, hugging his white bunny that he got from his deceased mother, blinking slowly, feeling lethargic. At least, the way Yuuji explained it, it seemed as though he hadn't done anything to Mahito or the other two.
"Then, at least self-study," he said feebly.
Yuuji was hectically pacing up and down in the room, throwing his arms in the air once in a while as he complained angrily.
"All of this because we smoked his weed?? What the fuck!"
Megumi wetted his lips, letting a few seconds pass.
"There is probably more to it. I talked to him only once but he must have disliked the way I talked to him or about his weed that I took."
"So what?! All of that because he didn't like the way you talked to him that one time?! That's fucking crazy. That dude is a fucking psychopath!" Yuuji paced up and down more frantically. "His friends are crazy, too! They're backing him up!"
Megumi didn't want to say anything to that. He was ... waiting. Waiting for ... a message from Professor Nanami. Or for something to happen. The wait felt inexorable, like black doom looming over him, about to devour him.
Megumi hadn't accepted defeat, he was waiting. Waiting for something to happen. Waiting for good news. Nanami telling him that Megumi had been right. That everything Megumi had said was the truth and that Mahito was the one who had lied. And that the evidence was not real; that they were fake.
Yuuji halted, scratching the back of his neck as he thought about something. He turned to Megumi.
"Let's go to my dad's," he suggested in a mild voice.
Megumi furrowed his brows lightly.
"What? Why?"
Yuuji tripped over his words, his tongue tied.
"I don't-he's a doctor-maybe ... Perhaps he knows a medical way to determine whether someone has drugged themselves or not! Or something like that ..."
Megumi furrowed his brows deeply this time.
"Nonsense. There is no such thing."
Yuuji sighed heavily, sitting down next to Megumi on his bed. He looked at his boyfriend, stroking his hair tenderly.
"Megs ... I don't know what to do. I don't know what else we could do. Perhaps my dad can give us some advice."
Megumi didn't feel like going anywhere, but taking advice from Yuuji's adoptive father wouldn't make matters worse, so he might as well listen to what another adult might say about his problem.
Thus, Megumi made up his mind, sighing deeply at last.
"Fine ... Let's go to Gojo."
***
"Huh?!"
It was early in the evening. Yuuji, Megumi and Gojo were in the living room by the dining table. Megumi was sitting, Yuuji was standing and Gojo had drawn a chair back to sit down as well when Yuuji had began telling him what was up.
Gojo was still standing, frozen in place, Yuuji's uttered words a curse in his ears.
Yuuji didn't know what to make of Gojo's silence. He started again.
"A student called Mahito Ke-"
"I heard you the first time, Yuuji, that's why I said 'Huh?!'," Gojo interrupted him.
He turned his gaze to Megumi who was sitting there, head resting on his propped up palm, staring mindlessly at a spot on the table. He looked so hopeless and frail, as though he had already secretely given up.
"Why did he target you of all people, Megumi?"
Megumi waved a hand in a dismissive manner.
"Don't ask. It happened, alright."
Gojo directed his question to Yuuji this time.
"He accused Megumi? Just like that?"
"That's the point. He didn't accuse Megumi just like that," Yuuji answered. "He laid out a plan with two of his friends very carefully."
"How? What did he say had happened?"
And then Yuuji told him. The more Yuuji revealed, the more expressions of bewilderment were showing on Gojo's face until he looked flabbergastedly disgusted at the end. To Gojo, the accusations against Megumi were ludicrous.
Gojo took a minute to let the words sink in and think about what knowledge to obtain next.
"And ... there are evidences?"
Yuuji nodded, scowling.
"Yeah. Fabricated evidences. Even our principal found one himself."
"And your testimony Megumi? What about your testimony?"
Megumi shook his head.
"I messed it up. I was studying alone in my dorm room at that time. And I forgot to mention some details at first. I revealed them later, which made me contradict myself with the things I had said before. It got me in the end. There was a short time where they lured me out of our room to place one of the evidences in there, under my bed. I didn't mention that during the interrogation at first because I forgot. Which was dumb of me because, before that, I had insisted on having studied in my room the whole time. The other fabricated evidences were put cleverly - in a way that I couldn't save anything with my testimony anymore. By then, the principal wasn't convinced by my version of the whole thing anymore anyway. He didn't outright say it, but I'm sure he doesn't believe me at all."
Gojo looked at Megumi intently. The whole issue sounded complex.
"Last Sunday, right? At what time were you studying?"
"From around 4 to 8 p.m. After Yuuji went away to meet up with other pharm students and until he came back."
"How long were you gone from your room?"
"I don't know anymore. Maybe fifteen to twenty minutes?"
"When?"
"Some time after 4.30 p.m. until around 5 p.m. I wasn't gone long enough though to allegedly go to Mahito's room to meet him there and then attempt to sexually assault him. That one is for sure."
"Any witnesses?"
Megumi shook his head.
"I was on the same floor, on the other side of the hallway, but no one saw me and I didn't see anyone either."
Gojo was stunned.
"No one saw you? Really? Not a single person who saw you? Not even while you were exiting or entering your room?"
"Absolutely no one saw him," Yuuji answered for Megumi. The big contrast between Megumi (who was declining to resign) and Yuuji (who wouldn't accept any of this) was highly evident. "We've already asked around. There's no one who can testify that Megumi was in the hallway instead of Mahito's room when that attempted sexual assault had allegedly happened."
"How did they lure you out of your room?" Gojo went on.
"With a message." Megumi replied.
"Show me the message."
Megumi grimaced.
"I deleted it." He placed a hand over his face. "Fuck, I was so dumb. I shouldn't have deleted it. I deleted it out of frustration. That message would have been a little chance for me to prove my claims. There was a time stamp and it said what they wanted me to do. I did what they asked me of."
Gojo wasn't thinking about sitting down anymore, his mind constantly occupied by questions and answers and possible solutions.
"Actually, there are ways to retrieve a deleted message," he said after a while.
"Let's do this then!" Yuuji said quickly.
Gojo stalled with his answer.
"How much could that help, though? Megumi said no one saw him. Even with the deleted message retrieved, he has no ways to prove that he was following instructions of that message instead of being in Mahito's room at that time."
Megumi nodded slightly to himself, but Yuuji couldn't stop there.
"A-And-And ... what about the number?? If we get the message back, we're gonna have the phone number too! It'll prove that Junpei or Uraume sent it. That's suspicious!"
Megumi drew circles on the table with a finger.
"Mahito, Junpei and Uraume came up with all of this meticulously and with a lot of details taken care of. Do you really think they used their own phones to send me that message? I'm sure it was some throwaway phone."
Yuuji pouted, hating the fact that Megumi was probably right. The sheer helplessness of the whole issue made him worry boundlessly.
Gojo wasn't finished yet at all.
"Where in your room where you studying?"
"At my desk."
"Did you say that when you were interrogated?"
"Yes."
"Which desk? What does the place look like where Megumi was studying?"
Yuuji was confused.
"Huh?"
"Show me a picture of your dorm room."
"Huh??"
Yuuji was totally perplexed, while Megumi wasn't paying much attention to that weird exchange of words.
"Don't you have a picture of your own dorm room?!" Gojo asked in a slightly raised voice.
Gojo didn't sound downright angry, but this was the first time that Yuuji was witnessing his adoptive father look and sound this mad. Megumi had never witnessed him riled up, either.
Yuuji pulled out his phone, searching for a picture as he approached Gojo. He then showed him a picture, pointing at Megumi's desk. Gojo's eyes scanned the picture painstakingly, taking Yuuji's phone in his own hands. His voice went back to normal.
"That's the desk you were studying at, Megumi? The one by the window? You were studying at that desk the whole time except for that one time where you were lured out of your room?" Gojo wanted to confirm once more.
Megumi hadn't moved an inch from his seat so far, head still resting against his palm, apathetic. He closed his eyes and nodded his head slowly. By now, Megumi had the feeling that none of this would help him anyway. What use could it have to go over everything once more?
"What's the location of your room?" Gojo wanted to know.
"Second floor, at the far end of the building. Number 2.27. West side towards the sports fields," Yuuji responded casually.
Gojo kept staring intensely at the picture for a long while, silent.
"I see." He gave Yuuji his phone back. "What evidences does Nanami have?"
Yuuji then told him about a little black container that was hidden under Megumi's bed when Megumi was gone for that short amount of time and which the principal had found himself later. He went on, saying that Mahito's two closests friends had given testimony, claiming they had seen Megumi run out of Mahito's room after being caught. Mahito had actually been drugged at that time when his two friends found him there. Then, of course, there was Megumi's messy testimony and the fact that he had no alibi because no one saw him. Yuuji had been away, which many pharmacy students and the security camera at the entrance of the dormitory building could prove.
"Why did they hide a little container in your room?" Gojo inquired, taking in every information diligently.
Megumi drew little circles on the table with the tip of his finger once more.
"It has my fingerprints on them. They are still running some tests, but the inside of the container probably contains traces of the same drug that was found in Mahito's blood. He drugged himself to make the whole attempted sexual assault believable."
"How did your fingerprints end up on that thing?"
"Mahito made me touch it before all of this happened. I didn't know back then what he was doing and what he'd use the little container for."
"How did they get access to your dorm room?"
"They stole Yuuji's key."
"And whoever hid the thing in your room wasn't seen by anyone else either, I guess."
Megumi shrugged his shoulders.
"They gave Yuuji his key back without Yuuji or anyone else noticing it."
Gojo crossed his arms, smiling weakly. He couldn't hold back a little huff.
"Those three have done impressive work. It's incredible that their whole plan worked out pretty much perfectly. So many fabricated evidences against you and you can't do much about them." Gojo rubbed his chin, pausing for a second. "There were actually many things that they had no control over - possible witnesses, for instance. The worst is that no one saw you, Megumi. And you didn't see anyone. They had to rely on many things to work out for them without having control over it and yet their plan came off well."
Megumi didn't really want to hear this and Yuuji listened without knowing what to say.
"Thanks for your uplifting words, Gojo," Megumi said sarcastically, sighing, no energy left inside him.
"Such bad luck," Gojo added. "Contradictory testimony, huh? It's not easy navigating through an interrogation and giving a neat testimony; especially when you're the one who's accused of something."
"I feel so flattered, Gojo."
Megumi was so close to drop his head onto the table and bury it under his hands. Being reminded of his failures was the last thing he wanted to experience right now.
Yuuji looked at his boyfriend, trying to direct the conversation to something more helpful.
"What to do, dad? Should we, I don't know, get a lawyer involved or so?"
Gojo was staring at the kitchen table, deep in thoughts.
"Not yet. There is no real need to. This isn't an official investigation yet. Megumi has already testified for the inofficial interrogation. If it ever comes to an official one, he would get testified again anyway. That's where a legal person would be needed."
Gojo squinted his eyes, thinking and whispering to himself.
"No one saw you. No one ..."
He thought about that for a long while, pairing his thought with something else he found out earlier when asking the two students.
No one saw Megumi ...?
Gojo spotted Megumi looking at him, which made him smile at the student reassuringly.
"Don't worry, Megumi."
Megumi couldn't take that seriously. He had every reason to worry himself to death.
His phone signalled him that he had received an E-mail. He pulled out his phone and checked the mail.
"Oh my god!"
Megumi had read the few lines in that mail, dropping his phone onto the table harshly, his hands going to his open mouth. His heartbeat rose and his eyes widened.
"What is it?" Yuuji asked, worried.
Gojo was watching Megumi's sudden change in demeanor silently.
"A mail from the principal," Megumi began. "I have to show up at his office. Tomorrow at 1 p.m."
"Oh," Yuuji said bluntly, "that was fast."
Megumi's mood shifted instantly.
Gojo observed Megumi. Observed how Megumi was losing his sanity and getting more depressed.
The despair.
Yuuji was desperate, too. He turned his gaze to his adoptive father fast and spoke quickly.
"What now?? What's gonna happen to Megumi?"
"Nothing," came Gojo's calm and collected answer.
"What?" Yuuji asked with a furrow of his brows, perplexed.
Megumi felt too desperate to look up.
Gojo, with that ominous aura of his and those icy-blue eyes, looked at Yuuji first and then at Megumi.
"Nothing is going to happen to Megumi because he didn't do it."
***
It was the same day, but late at night and Megumi and Yuuji were back in their dorm room.
In his mind, Megumi was going over the last words Gojo had told him before he had sent them off to campus.
"It's okay, Megumi. Don't worry. You don't have to worry about anything. Nothing will happen to you. You didn't do it."
Megumi didn't understand what Gojo had meant by that and Yuuji didn't understand it either.
The latter one was standing in the middle of the room, barely daring to check Megumi's current mood.
Yuuji had suggested visiting Gojo. However, the outcome ... Yuuji had hoped for more, he had expected more. He felt like he still didn't know what he could do. Everything was a mess and there was no way for him to help Megumi more.
"Of course something is gonna happen!" Megumi exclaimed out of the blue. "There is evidence! I'm so fucking done for."
Yuuji didn't want to believe that, starting to cling to Gojo's last words.
"Tomorrow, at 1 p.m., I'm gonna get kicked out of university. Leaving behind the reputation of a criminal. Next step: A police charge."
Yuuji sighed lowly, sitting down on Megumi's bed. He patted the empty spot next to him with a hand. Megumi saw that and sat down next to his boyfriend reluctantly. He took his bunny and rested his head on Yuuji's lap, lying on his bed now.
He was thinking about tomorrow. The things that would happen tomorrow. He hugged his white bunny harder and soon he started sobbing, tears welling up at the corners of his eyes.
Yuuji noticed that and felt pretty much helpless.
"Meg ..."
"This is my dream major My dream job! I'll never become a doctor! They're gonna kick me out and I can never enter any other med school again!"
"Of course you can."
"No, I can't. It doesn't matter, if there is a police charge or not ... This university has a documented record about the attempted sexual assault and the illegal substance use and my name is linked to it. Things like that get around discreetly beween heads of universities. All the other universities are gonna find out about it, no matter which state. I'll never get accepted to med school again!"
This time, Yuuji had no choice, but to stay silent, and Megumi's tears started flowing down his face, his sobs gaining volume.
As Megumi was crying, his cheeks were soon covered by some fabric. Megumi realized that it was Yuuji's sleeves that were pressing lightly against his cheeks to dry his tears. Yuuji might not be able to say anything right now, but he wanted to console Megumi in some other way nonethless.
Megumi sniffled, trying to stop his sobs and tears. Teary-eyed, he gave Yuuji a longing look full of hope. Yuuji was regarding Megumi too, - with bittersweet fondess - caressing Megumi's wet cheeks with his sleeves. They exchanged glances silently. It was a weak and sad smile that was showing on Yuuji's face. A smile to hide away the sorrows and nasty thoughts.
Megumi shifted his head back to its initial position. His tears have completely waned.
The way Yuuji had placed his sleeves over his cheeks and dried his tears like that ... it made Megumi remember the first time Yuuji did that. It happened back then, when Megumi had confessed his love to Yuuji for the first time ever - after their big fight.
Thinking back to it caused Megumi to crave for three little words. Megumi stroked his stuffed bunny's head.
Megumi didn't know why that sudden thought popped up at a time like this but ... Only now did he realize that Yuuji had never said 'I love you' to him yet.
To be honest ... right at this very moment ... Megumi would love to hear him say that.
He had said it to Yuuji only twice - both during their reconciliation - but he would love to hear it from Yuuji once. At least once.
Even if a love confession wouldn't be able to solve that big problem of Megumi's right now - his world shattering around him - at least those three, little, meaningful words might be able to give him a little moment of salvation.
Did Yuuji love him? He did love Megumi ... right?
Megumi didn't want to torment himself with such like thoughts that he had no answers to anyway, so he directed his attention to the conversation from earlier. Perhaps he could find something that could help him.
Soon enough, though, Megumi came to the conclusion that it had been nothing more than venting their anger to an outsider.
Yuuji had wanted to talk to Gojo, they had talked to Gojo, the conversation had ended in nothing that was bearing fruit. There was nothing Gojo could do to help them.
In his head, he went over everything once more, even if rather without motivation.
Until ...
Megumi noticed something.
"That's weird," Megumi said to himself out loud.
"Hm?"
"He said 'Nanami'."
"Who?"
"Gojo. When we were talking to him earlier, he called our principal by his name, even though we never mentioned his name." Megumi was sure he remembered it correctly. He frowned deeply. "How did he know right away what our principal's name was?"
***
(The next day, around midday)
"Wow!"
Gojo was slightly in awe as he stood in front of the main entrance of John-Johnson-Kent University. He had one hand on his hips, smiling to himself as he cast a look around the main building and campus. It was midday and one day after Megumi and Yuuji had visited him. He took off his sunglasses which he didn't need to wear on a winter day, but had done so nevertheless.
"I really am getting old," Gojo spoke to himself, huffing a little laughter as he pocketed his sunglasses. "So many things have changed here."
