Chapter 24: The Calm Before the Storm
A/N: I decided to make Mahito, Junpei and Uraume the evil trio because I can :P
I made Uraume female. Mahito and Uraume need a surname in this story, so I chose 'Kenzo' for Mahito and 'Suzuki' for Uraume.
This chapter ends in a nasty cliffhanger 😬
WARNING: Vague mentions of an attempted sexual crime!
Chapter summary: Wanting to take revenge on Megumi, Mahito sets his plan in motion.
--------------
Mahito watched Megumi disappear into the distance with squinted and calculating eyes until he was out of sight.
"That fucking brat ..."
One corner of Mahito's mouth twitched into a crooked smirk.
"I'm gonna ruin him."
-----------------
It was Monday morning.
Megumi and Yuuji were sitting next to each other in their joint class, a few minutes before the lecture would start. Yuuji was effortlessly socializing with students around him, all of them exchanging plans for the weekends.
Something like a group activity among pharmacy students was mentioned, Megumi wasn't really listening, though; going over a text he needed to read for an assignment.
While Megumi was busy reading and highlighting the text, a small but long, cylinder-shaped item was rolling across the tables next to him until it hit his sleeve.
Oddly puzzled, Megumi looked at the thing before picking it up with bare hands. He inspected it for a few seconds.
The cylinder-shaped container was black and fit into his palm and had a cap on top that was decorated with a little, white dice that had the numbers painted in grey. Megumi furrowed his brows. That thing had a very distinctive appearance with how the cap was paired with that little dice, and Megumi figured out that one could put something inside. Not much fit inside, actually, but as Megumi was weighing it, he guessed that it must have been empty.
"Don't touch it."
Megumi heard the voice as suddenly as the item was taken from his hand. Megumi looked up.
Mahito was grinning widely at Megumi as he took the little, black container with gloved hands by touching the tip and the bottom of it with a thumb and forefinger. To Megumi, it looked so strange seeing that happen while Mahito was wearing black leather gloves.
The way Mahito was grinning at him, made it hard for Megumi to understand what was actually happening here.
"It's mine," Mahito added as a finishing sentence, raising the container with that dice cap higher.
Megumi didn't understand anything, not looking at the thing that Mahito was holding between them, silently giving him a confused look.
Mahito seemed to not have anything to add, so he slowly walked away while still carefully holding the little container between his fingers, the tips of those two fingers barely touching it.
Megumi was watching him leave, all the while a dozen of questions were swirling in his mind.
What was that just now?
"That was creepy," Yuuji commented coldly next to Megumi who must have witnessed parts of Megumi's encounter with Mahito just now.
"Why is he wearing gloves?" Megumi questioned seriously.
Actually, Mahito was dressed in all black and in all leather. A leather jacket, leather pants, leather gloves and leather boots. Mahito wasn't paying attention to Megumi or looking to the general direction of Megumi's seat anymore, seemingly engrossed in conversations with two other people. Megumi recognized one of the two people's faces from last time.
"Because he's a creep," Yuuji replied.
"Apparently, it was his blunt that I picked up from the floor last time," Megumi added, continuing to look at Mahito. "He wanted it back. I offered him financial compensation, but he didn't want that. He was so weird about it all. That whole conversation was so weird."
"I'm telling you it's because he's a creep," Yuuji insisted. He edged closer to Megumi, subtly pointing with a finger as he spoke lowly into Megumi's ear. "Those two next to him are Uraume and Junpei. All three of them are pharm students. Mahito stands out in every pharm class because of his long, grey-blue hair. He's a strange guy, really. You can't really tell, if he dislikes a person or actually despises them. That cold kindness always seems so fake."
Megumi had already met Junpei once. Uraume was a girl with white hair and a streak of red going across to both sides. She was the palest of them all, though Mahito was a close second.
Everything about the incident from earlier kind of felt odd to Megumi, but he couldn't pinpoint where that feeling of oddness was coming from.
For now, he pushed those thoughts aside, and when the professor of the joint class arrived, he wasn't thinking about them anymore.
Mahito gave unsuspecting Megumi one last look before taking his seat. He smirked to himself as he sat down, knowing that the first part of his plan had been a success. The rest would be a success too, he was sure of that.
***
It was Sunday, the same week.
The pharmacy students Yuuji had talked to before the joint class had started on Monday were actually meeting up today in the afternoon for some outdoor activities. It would be a group of around twenty to thirty.
Yuuji was in his dorm room, getting ready, while Megumi was sitting at his desk.
"I'll be gone the whole afternoon, maybe until late to the evening," Yuuji clarified as he tied his shoes and put on his jacket next.
"Mhm, okay."
Megumi was pulling out his anatomy book, notebook and tablet from his bag.
"You can come with me and join us, if you want. It might be mostly pharm students there, but we meet up with other kind of students as well."
"No, I'm good. I have to revise some anatomy classes. Anatomy finals are gonna be a pain in the ass and it's not easy memorizing everything. I need to do a deep study session today, I guess."
Megumi groaned at that thought, even showing a pout as he looked at his boyfriend. Yuuji wished he could help Megumi with that, but he couldn't. The least he could do was give Megumi encouraging pecks and an encouraging hug, so he did exactly that.
"Good luck with that, Meg."
Yuuji planted one last kiss onto Megumi's lips.
They parted. Yuuji left the room and Megumi prepared the study material on his desk. The window was right next to him. Megumi stared out of it for a while. They blue sky was crystal-clear, the sun was shining, unbridled. It was early December, so Megumi knew that it was actually chillier outside than what the sky made one believe.
Megumi looked at the watch.
4.11 p.m.
Megumi wanted to deep study until at least 7 p.m. - better even, if he managed until 8 p.m. without his brain feeling like deep-fried.
He started with going over the anatomy of the skull, memorizing that before he would have to go over to the hands and feet. The parts of the skull were more difficult for him. If he mastered those first, he would feel better and more motivated with the next ones that were easier.
When he was about to start filling in blanks of a work sheet to name every part of the skull, Megumi's phone buzzed as he received an incoming message.
Sighing, Megumi checked his phone. (He had started off his deep study so well.)
(Unknown number)
[4.37 p.m.] Hi Megumi! Yuuji forgot to leave the key card to the pharm lab behind in his room. Would be shit if he lost it somewhere outside. Am doing that for him bc he busy with others rn. He didn't tell me which number his room is tho. Just placed it on top of the shelf next to the comm bath on the first floor hope you'll find it!
Megumi sighed even louder this time.
Yuuji forgetting to leave something behind was typical, but him forgetting to tell someone an information as important as the room number to the dorm room they are supposed to go to was even more typical of Yuuji.
He rubbed over his face repeatedly, desperate and unwilling. There was no use. The key card was already put there. It was better to pick it up right away before someone else might find it coincidentally (for whatever reason would someone look at the top of a shelf in a dormitory hall anyway?).
As he stood up and made his way out of the room, he went over the things he'd studied so far, walking across the hallway. He didn't really pay attention to his surroundings, but at the same time there really was no need to. It was Sunday in the afternoon. Megumi didn't think that he encountered any students on his way. Most of them were gone to their family homes or chilling somewhere outside of campus. And if there were any in the dormitory building, they were probably resting inside their rooms without a single care in the world.
Megumi's and Yuuji's dorm room was on one side, the communal bathrooms were on the other side of the first floor; the shelf was next to it.
Thinking about whether the orbital plate, lacrimal bone and zygomatic bone or lacrimal bone, orbital plate and zygomatic bone was the right sequence to memorize, Megumi had finally reached the antique shelf that was dusty everywhere. At the same time he came to the conclusion that, yes, the parts of a skull really weren't easy to remember.
Megumi looked at the shelf. Nothing noteworthy was put in it anyway. Good thing that Megumi was tall enough to reach the highest place of the shelf.
He stood on his toes as he let his hands wander over the surface. A lot of dust accumulated on his fingers and Megumi felt slight disgust.
However ...
Megumi couldn't find the key card. His fingers weren't grasping anything. Irritated by that, he let his hands wander again - this time not leaving a single spot untouched, a double layer of dust accumulating on his palms.
No card.
What the hell? Megumi thought angrily.
He jumped; once, twice. But the highest place on the shelf had nothing resting on it. Megumi checked out every other place of the shelf, but there was nowhere a key card or anything card-shaped in sight. Considering that it might have slipped and landed between the wall and the shelf, Megumi checked that part as well, lighting it up with his phone light.
Nothing.
Megumi was so done. He had spent ten to fifteen minutes like an idiot, searching for something that wasn't there.
To top it off, Megumi felt like he had forgotten everything he'd studied so far today. He couldn't recall parts of the skull in correct sequences anymore.
It made Megumi mad, actually.
He pulled out his phone and checked the message again. First floor. Shelf next to the communal bathroom. That was where Megumi was at right at this very moment.
Should he just call the unknown number and tell him that the card wasn't there?
No ... why should he??
Megumi wasn't the one who had messed this up. On top of that, he had no nerves left to deal with this. His deep study session had suffered from it, too, and Megumi felt like he had to study twice as much later.
Whatever.
Yuuji could deal with it later once he was back. Surely that friend of his would know better than Megumi where he had actually hidden the key card.
So, he simply deleted the message - and with that the unknown number was deleted, too. He sighed heavily as he went back to his room, trying to remember what he had studied earlier. He didn't encounter anyone on his way back, utter silence enveloping him.
Once he was close to the door of his room, Megumi suddenly stopped in his tracks.
I closed the door, was Megumi's first thought when he saw a shining bar of light slanting to the dimly lit hallway from the little space between the door and door frame.
Megumi was sure that he had closed the door earlier, when leaving the room.
And now it was open, slightly open.
What was the meaning of this?
Megumi slowly approached the door to his own dorm room. Looking at the open space, he opened the door carefully. He didn't go inside right away, listening to any sounds that might or might not come from the other side - from inside his own room.
Was someone there?
The door was opened wide enough to have a look around. There was no one. And there were no real hiding places. Eventually, Megumi went inside, closing the door behind him. He listened again, his ears on alert, his breath shallow and his body motionless.
He couldn't hear anything.
Just to be sure, Megumi checked the bathroom, too - again cautiously and silently. No one there. The bathroom had not a single hiding place.
Megumi went back to his actual room and let his scrutinizing gaze wander. Everything was in place, nothing rummaged or toppled over. There were no signs of someone having entered the room or stolen something.
So weird, he thought as he made his way to his desk.
Perhaps he, in fact, had not properly closed the door earlier, since his mind had been so preoccupied by his anatomy studies.
Megumi didn't give that any more thoughts, knowing that there were more important things to do now. He looked at the watch.
5.06 p.m.
Great.
Megumi would definitely have to study until after 7 p.m. By his desk, he looked out of the window again, rolling his eyes and taking deep breaths before mentally preparing himself for the upcoming hours.
He went on with his studies and was actually able to focus on them until he was interrupted by a knock at the door. Megumi looked at the clock.
7.52 p.m.
Well, at least he was able to study for almost three before getting interrupted.
He stood up and walked towards the door. When he opened it, he got almost hit by it as it was pushed open fast from the other side.
"Megs, I lost my key!"
Yuuji scurried into the room as soon as Megumi had finished pulling down the door handle. Megumi blinker repeatedly upon almost getting facepalmed by the door.
"Again?" Megumi closed the door behind Yuuji. "That was your spare key."
"I knowwww." Yuuji whined. "I don't know where I lost it."
He quickly scanned the room, superficially, in search of his key which he thought had been with him the whole time, both hands on his hips. He sighed heavily.
"Can I have your spare key instead?"
Megumi pointed at the top drawer of his nightstand. Yuuji went there and took Megumi's spare key before sitting down on his bed.
"And what about your key card? I couldn't find it. You sure your friend put it on the shelf on the first floor?"
Yuuji was checking his bag, but looked at Megumi with a furrow of his brows when he heard that question.
"What card?"
"The card to the pharm lab?"
"What are you talking about?"
Megumi felt dumbfounded.
"Are you kidding me? You told someone to bring the key card back to your dorm room because you didn't want to take it outside with you. They didn't know which room number, so they put it on top of a shelf on the other side of the hallway. They send me a message, so that I can pick it up, but there was no card on that shelf. Didn't you give them my number to message me?"
"No, I didn't. I didn't send someone away to do something like that for me! First year students like me don't have access to the pharm labs anyway. I don't have such a key card yet." Yuuji paused for a quick second. "Should have left my room key behind, if only I had known that I would lose it."
"What the hell. What was that message then?"
"I don't know. Who was it anyway?"
"I don't know. It was an unknown number and they didn't tell me their name."
Yuuji didn't get what this was all about.
"... A prank maybe?" he suggested uncertainly.
Megumi was not convinced.
"Why would someone do such a pointless prank? What for?" He thought about it some more. "How did they get my phone number?"
Yuuji shrugged his shoulders, rummaging through his bag.
"Forget it. Some people here are crazy."
That's weird ... What the hell was that? The whole incident had Megumi think about it in an odd way.
Yuuji dropped his bag, sighing.
"Well, I can't find my dorm room key. Urghhh, why did it happen to me again??"
Megumi, too, had no idea how Yuuji had been able to lose his key a second time. Yuuji stood up, shrugging his shoulders.
"No biggie. I'll tell the staff tomorrow to give me new ones."
Megumi hummed and wanted to go back to his desk, but Yuuji held him back excitedly.
"Are you hungry?"
Yuuji's eyes were beaming.
"Not really."
"Yes, you are. You probably didn't eat dinner yet. There's a new pizzeria right next to campus. Let's try it out. Consider this a study break."
Yuuji smiled brightly at him, which didn't leave Megumi unfazed. Even though he didn't want to have a 'study break' that would last an hour or more, he gave in nonetheless. On second thought, pizza with Yuuji did sound good.
"Alright."
Megumi took his keys and wallet and grabbed his jacket.
When they left their room, it was Megumi who closed the door. Suspicious, he looked at it and then at the door handle, pressing his whole body against the closed door to try something out.
When closed, the door wouldn't open indeed. It made Megumi wonder. Had he really not closed the door earlier today?
"What are you doing there?" Yuuji asked.
He had already gone a few steps ahead, looking back to Megumi.
Megumi gave the closed door one last look.
"Nothing."
***
The next day, on Monday, Megumi submitted an assignment in the morning which was why he arrived at the seminar room a bit later than Yuuji.
Yuuji wasn't at his seat, his open bag was put on his desk, though. Megumi sat down next to Yuuji's seat, taking out some of his belongings. There were still a few minutes left before class would start and the professor hadn't arrived yet.
Yuuji came back shortly after, ruffling and kissing Megumi's hair before sitting down and taking out his own stuff.
"Heyyyyy. Look, Megs!"
Yuuji sounded overjoyed, having Megumi turn his head to him to see what was up with him. Yuuji was smiling brightly, holding up a key with two fingers.
"My key! It was in my bag!"
Megumi frowned, the whole thing appearing dubious to him.
"In your bag? You searched your bag for your key yesterday. It wasn't there."
"I swear, I found it here, though. Must have overlooked it yesterday, I guess," Yuuji argued casually as he looked inside his bag.
Yuuji had lost his key, had searched for it in his bag and couldn't find it. Today, he found his key in the same bag he had gone through yesterday ...
That's so weird, Megumi thought.
Something about this didn't add up, but Megumi couldn't exactly tell what it was. It just sounded so strange and constructed, somehow.
***
It was a few days later.
A blond middle-aged man was sitting at his desk in his office. He was stroking his chin with a finger as he went through a few lines of the text he was holding in his hands. Actually, he had gone over all of the pages a few times already.
Mahito Kenzo
... in my dorm room ...
... offered me a drink ...
... I was unaware ...
... felt weird after a while ...
Junpei Yoshino
... went to his room because we forgot something there ...
... he was lying on his bed ...
... took something with him ...
... it was black and ...
... I went to check on Mahito ...
... he was unconscious ...
Uraume Suzuki
... hands on Mahito's underwear ...
... pants already unbuttoned ...
... fled the scene when he saw us ...
... something in his hand ...
The blond man placed the papers on his desk, deep in thoughts.
"We're set to go," a brunet man said - who was in the office as well.
The blond looked up. The brunet was looking at him without many emotions on his face, but his eyes were expectant.
The blond eventually stood up and buttoned his jacket.
"Alright."
***
That same day, one hour later (it was late in the evening), Megumi and Yuuji made their way back to their dorm room together. Yuuji didn't have anything planned for later and Megumi wanted to study (as usual), knowing that finals were coming closer.
When Megumi and Yuuji went back to their dorm room, they were surprised to see the door being open.
"What?" Yuuji uttered lowly.
Not again ... was Megumi's first thought.
Upon reaching the threshold, Megumi was met with the sight of two middle-aged men. One of them was blond and put something, that was in a plastic bag, into his jacket pocket. He had a tall, muscular build that was enhanced by his tailored light-grey suit, his face chiseled and his short hair parted and styled to the side. The other man was brunet and finished tucking Megumi's mattress back into place. He was shorter and much leaner, with short hair and bangs. He was wearing a dark suit and his facial features were much softer.
Megumi stunned a little.
"What's going on here?"
The blond man turned to Megumi, not taken aback or embarrased by being 'caught in the act'.
"Who of you two is Megumi Fushiguro?" he questioned, his voice firm and clear.
Megumi stunned again.
"That's me."
"I'm Professor Kento Nanami, the principal of this university. This is Mister Yu Haibara, my assistant."
Said assistant was taking off his white latex gloves when he got introduced.
"We would like to talk to you, Mr Fushiguro. Can your roommate leave us alone for a while? I'm assuming he's your roommate."
Yuuji made a surprised sound.
"He can stay." Megumi stretched an arm protectively in front Yuuji. "I have nothing to hide."
Professor Nanami slightly shrugged his shoulders. Every of his movement seemed poised and yet calculated and dominant.
"Very well, then."
He looked at Megumi with an authoritarian aura, raising the tension by letting a moment pass.
"First year pharmacy student Mahito Kenzo has filed a report in my office today."
Megumi was simply confused.
"And? What's that got to do with me?"
The seriousness in Professor Nanami's demeanour seemed to harden. What he said next came as a surprise to both Megumi and Yuuji.
"Mahito Kenzo is accusing you, Megumi Fushiguro, of having attempted to sexually assault him."
