CH 8. Partnered In P.E

So far, today, was chill, because nobody dared to come near me and that was a good thing. I just didn't want to jinx my fate. I knock on the desk twice, hoping to kill the jinx, as I wasn't ready to deal with it right now. No one was phased by the knock because everyone was deep in their lesson.

I stretch my muscles remembering those lessons in gymnastics, from when I was little. Stretching was so important, and I've twisted and pulled muscles, so I wasn't about to deal with it again.

P.E. was mostly girls and boys separately. The classes are mostly separate in England until those days where their brought together. This was one of those days where we are doing the lesson with all genders.

"Partner up! Boys and girls and I don't want any arguments," screams Miss. Higgs, holding her whistle as she blows into it. She lets it fall back down. "Anyone who isn't paired up must come to me and get assigned a partner!"

I was about to go over, but a hand is on my shoulder, and I looked to see who it belonged to. Niall Horan.

I nod, accepting the offer, as it was better than having one assigned to you.

There was only four people who got unpaired. I was thankful that I wasn't the odd number in that bunch.

"Thanks," I whisper.

"Huh?" says Niall.

"You saved me from that," I say, slightly joking, and half not at the same time.

"You're normally one of them?" asks Niall.

I do my best American accent. "Yes sir."

"I thought I'd be over there, our group is mostly even numbers," says Niall.

"Really? Even though you're the new boy?"

"Yeah. You'd be surprised they mostly forget I'm there."

"Everyone gather round! NOW!" screams Miss. Higgs, beginning to get annoyed at everyone.

Niall and I walk side by side as we make our way over to the circle. The circle was hollow in the middle as everyone was shoulder to shoulder. Some opting to go behind those who dared to go in the front row. We are one of the people in the back not ready to be targeted by the teacher.

I keep on moving my body to keep myself warm in the freezing air around us. It was like Jack Frost was ready to pinch us. I couldn't stand the cold, and often wore lots of layers only this time those layers were forgotten.

I ended up just being bare in my sports uniform made up of a shorts-sleeved top and shorts. My socks are long up to my knees, but they keep rolling down, and don't stand up to the challenge. My feet are the only thing warm because of my trainers.

Something falls into my pocket, and I find a pair of gloves. I look at Niall who had a grin on his face. This must be the day where everyone was going to try put The Bet into action. I sigh, taking them, and putting them on accepting that The Bet has started. I didn't like this idea at all but had to play along.

A ball is passed around the circle until every pair has one. It was football and we must dribble the ball around the cones and try not to stop. Dribbling the ball was the hardest part of the English version of football.

I was cautious of who was around us. That was because in the past someone (not naming anyone) would've aimed the ball in my face, proudly.

The furthest cones were already taken. There was no choice but to pick the ones in the middle, where you had multiple people surrounding you.

My hands rub together as I keep them moving.

"You want to go first?" asks Niall, no longer smiling, and dead serious. "You look freezing."

"Yeah sure. I can't promise I'm any good though, so don't judge."

"I won't judge," promises Niall.

I line the ball to the first cone. I take a deep breath in and release it. My ball was zigzagging around the cones, so I tried my best, to tame it so it wouldn't go everywhere. It was steady. I was able to get it to the other end without falling over.

I watch other teams, and they pass the ball to the other people. That was what I did once I finished my turn and kicked it back to my partner.

The ball slightly moved past just by an inch, but Niall saved it and started his round on the cones. He was slow as if warming himself up for his other turns.

"Good job, Evans and Horan! Keep it up!"

I walk to the beginning of the track waiting for the ball to be kicked back to me. However, I wasn't paying attention, with a ball flying into my face and crushing me. My hands fly over to my nose as blood drips down.

"Jenna Hunter! Go to isolation now!" orders Miss. Higgs, you knew you were in trouble when your full name was used.

I begin to cry unable to stop myself. The pain shoots up my nose which was not a good sign.

"Horan go take Evans to the Nurse's Office."
