Chapter 20
"Alright, what do you want from me?" Roman asked. "An apology?"
"If you can muster up enough to mean it," Remus said. This was getting ridiculous. Remus was getting ridiculous.
Roman sighed, rubbing his hands together. "Alright, fine, buen." He shrugged and clapped. "Re, I'm sorry that I couldn't get enough-"
Remus laughed loudly and harshly. The sound had changed a lot from when he was a kid. "You're stupid, you're so stupid! I can't believe this! I seriously can't!" He split his sides with laughter, pointing feebly at Roman. "You can't even make something about someone else for one second! You're sorry you what? Are somehow the victim in all this?" He laughed. "This is ridiculous. You are stupid." He stopped laughing so suddenly it almost scared Roman. "You want me to spell it out for you? Eres, Roman, estupido."
Remus was being childish. Remus was always being childish. Roman sighed in irritation, turning away slightly. He rubbed his hands together and shrugged.
"Alright, Re, if you don't want an apology-"
"I want something genuine from you!" Remus snapped. Roman turned back to him. He was red in the face, tears beading at the corners of his eyes. "For once in your damn life, Roman, give me some genuine scrap of familial affection. If you can give it to your ship, you can give it to me."
"My ship doesn't whine like a spoilt kid." The words jumped to Roman's lips but he stopped himself from saying them. His run-away mouth always seemed to get him into trouble, oddly.
Maybe it was better to leave Remus alone. He obviously didn't want to talk to him. He was just looking for an outlet for his anger.
"I'll see you later," Roman muttered. He turned to the door and left. He was a few steps down the corridor when he heard the door slam behind him. Something hit the door after that.
Idiot. Idiot kid. Roman shook his head and adjusted his coat. How he'd ever gotten saddled with that as a brother...
To be fair, it hadn't all been bad. Remus was as loyal as the day was long. Sometimes, it was even nice to have someone follow you around and listen to you like you were a god.
Roman glanced up and broke himself from his thoughts. The other captain - Virgil, right? - was coming down the steps, taking them two at a time. He tapped his fingers on the banister before swinging himself off the steps about three from the bottom.
Roman half-raised his hand to get Virgil's attention. The other captain ignored him and walked past. Roman sighed in annoyance, pivoting around.
"Hey," he said, loud enough that Virgil couldn't ignore it. Virgil kept walking. Okay, this was deliberate now.
"Hey?" Roman tried again. He tapped his foot in annoyance and then started after Virgil. He balled his hands into fists by his side. Surprisingly, the other captain was hard to catch up with.
"Hey? Hey! Querido! Lindo! Precioso-"
"Why do you keep calling me those things?" Virgil finally turned around. He crossed his arms and tilted his head to the side.
"I'm getting your attention," Roman said, perhaps a little smugly. "It worked, didn't it?"
Virgil raised an eyebrow. "What d'you want?"
"One of your crewmen - Janus, I think?" Roman looked for any sign of recognition. There was none. Not even a flash of the eye. Impressive. "He told me to talk to you. About how the ship works or something."
"This might not be clear to you, Princey," Virgil said slowly, "considering you've only ever lived among people who treat you like a God. But, when someone ignores you they usually don't want to talk."
Oh, he was mocking Roman. Wonderful, splendid.
"If you're going to captain with me, you need to drop the attitude," Roman said. Virgil blinked.
"If I'm going to captain with you?" He repeated. "This is my ship."
"They're my maps-"
"That only I can read," Virgil said. "You need me more than I need you."
"Please, you'd be lost without my help," Roman scoffed.
"Your help with what?" Virgil asked. Roman opened his mouth to reply but Virgil talked over the top of him. Rude. "So far, the only thing you've 'helped' me with is pissing off my best sailor and, on top of that, you've probably bugged my Second Mate too."
"Re is your Second Mate?" Roman asked incredulously.
"Yes," Virgil said. "Is that a problem?" Roman decided to ignore the subtext behind the question.
"This is pointless, anyway," Roman said, waving a hand. "Because one of us is right, the other one is you-" Virgil scoffed and Roman ignored him, "so can you just answer my questions? Specifically, where is my crew going to sleep?"
"The crew quarters," Virgil said, like it was obviously.
"That's it?" Roman asked. "No special quarters or anything?"
Virgil shrugged. "Nothing past the usual," he said. "Do you still have your Second Mate?"
"No."
"Perfect." Roman made a face that probably showed his levels of disgust at Virgil's apathy. "Cos Remus is already sharing a bed. Logan'll have to share with Pat - sure that'll be easy for them. And you, Princey, are going to share my Captain's Quarters with me." To finish the conversation, Virgil turned around and walked away.
"Oh. Okay." The thoughts clicked into place in Roman's brain and his eyes widened. "Wait, what?!"
If you think I'm going to write a pirate!au and not include a one bed trope, you mistake me for someone a lot stronger.
Bye,
Blaize
