Chapter 24
"You know, you look more suspicious with the mask and hood than you normally do," Haru drawled as she walked beside him.
It was early the next morning and true to his word, Izuku was walking the girls to school. Hanta was in charge of driving Hina while Aya and Akira stayed back at the apartments with Toga. Akira was supposed to be going back to college, but decided to take a few more weeks off to spend time with her mother and sisters. She didn't seem to care about her impending graduation as much as Haru did.
Izuku shrugged, not bothered with how he looked. "Maybe, but this way the facial recognition will at least take a few minutes to find me."
"Facial recognition?" Emiko echoed, practically skipping at her older sister's side. It was obvious that one of them was more excited to be going back to class than the other.
"You didn't know our school's security has that?" Haru asked back, her brows furrowed. "I know you're only a first year, but come on, Emi. How do you think it knows who's a student and who's just a reporter trying to sneak in?"
Izuku raised a brow at that, turning to the older girl. "That still happens?"
She waved her hand in a 'so-so' motion. "Once a month or so. It's not that big of a deal anymore with the new software, it shuts the journalists down pretty fast."
"Shit," Izuku mumbled, pulling the strings of his hood so it sat tighter to his face. He hadn't walked through the front door of the school ever, so he genuinely wasn't sure how long he had before he put the building on red alert.
"Is Izuku gonna get arrested?" Emiko asked, actually sounding worried at the possibility.
Haru laughed at her sister's question, bumping her elbow into the girls ribs in a teasing manner. "It's not like it'd matter, he broke out of Tartarus at fifteen!"
"Maybe we don't shout that right outside the country's top hero school," Izuku hissed as the front gates of UA came into view.
Haru at least had the decency to look sheepish. "Sorry."
Izuku didn't have the strength to stay mad at her, or any of the Seros for that matter. "It's fine, just try to keep your voice down next time," he said with a tired sigh. "Can you two get to your homerooms on your own? I gotta go find Nezu."
"Awe," Haru whined, pulling on his sleeve. "But I wanted my big brother's scary boyfriend to walk me to class. I'd get so many cool points if I was seen with a mysterious older guy."
"All the more reason for me to dump you at the front doors."
"Mean!"
There was another tug on his sleeve, this time softer and more hesitant. When he looked over, he saw that it was Emiko this time.
"Could you pretty please walk me to my class?" she asked in a soft voice. "Mr. Aizawa really scares me and I've missed so much. I know he's gonna be mad."
Izuku's resolved instantly cracked. Even if he knew the girl's fears were irrational and Aizawa would definitely not scold her for getting kidnapped, he still couldn't stand the thought of her being afraid. "Yeah, of course I can."
The way her eyes lit up was enough for Izuku to consider walking her there every day. Emiko had been walking on eggshells around him ever since he got her back from Shigaraki and Chisaki, with good reason. He was just happy she seemed to consider him safe again.
"Yay!" Haru cheered, throwing her hands up in the air. "Drop me off first? My class is closer to the front doors anyway."
"Yeah, yeah," he sighed in response.
It didn't take long to get to Haru's classroom, it was close to the front doors like she said. As soon as she stepped into the room there was a chorus of "Haru!" and "Sero, we were starting to think you died."
"Almost," she said with a cheeky smile.
Izuku and Emiko let her move further into the class while they waited back at the door. As much as Izuku didn't want to stick around, he would until Haru told him she was okay. As much as he despised when Shigaraki called him a dog, he was really turning into a guard dog for those girls.
"What happened?" a blue haired girl asked, pulling Haru into a tight hug. "Where were you? I tried to call, but it always went straight to voicemail."
"You're never gonna believe it," Haru said, pulling away with a sly smirk. "I was-"
"Haru," Izuku called in a warning tone. Where the Seros were the past few weeks was classified information. Only a handful of pro heroes and Izuku knew, and the villain wanted to keep it that way. Teenagers had a bad habit of blabbing to whoever would listen and technically Emiko was supposed to be dead.
A hush fell over the room as the students realized Izuku was there. The wide eyed school children didn't know who he was, but with his power level they could sense that he wasn't good. A con of his many, many quirks.
Haru had no such sense, rolling her eyes at his mother hen-ing. "Yeah, I know. It's classified," she said in her best Izuku impersonation.
"Whoa, that sounds like a big deal," the blue haired girl said, her eyes flashing between her friend and the scary stranger at their door.
"Who is that guy?" a boy with spiky black hair asked, bumping Haru with his elbow.
"Hanta's boyfriend," she fake whispered, a teasing smile taking over her features.
Izuku raised one brow at the girl. "Actually, I'm the guy who's gonna dump you at Takoba beach and make you walk home."
"Mean!" she said with pout, before turning her nose up and looking away. "You can leave now."
Izuku rolled his eyes at her change in tune, but pushed himself off the doorway he was leaning on. "If any of them start giving you shit, let me know," he said while turning his back.
"Little Sero!" a new voice yelled. Izuku mentally groaned, already recognizing it. It was hard to mistake Present Mic for anyone else. Haru could have at least mentioned who her homeroom teacher was. "Does that mean your big sister's back too?"
Emiko sheepishly waved, half hiding herself behind Izuku from the loud teacher. The villain silently wondered if she'd always been so shy or if it was a result of the kidnapping.
The blond hero's eyes traveled from the young student to the man she shielded herself with, one brow raising at the sight of the stranger. "And who might you be?"
"Family friend," Izuku replied in a gruff voice. He'd met Mic a few times in his life and none of them had been particularly pleasant for the voice hero. He preferred if Mic didn't recognize him.
Unfortunately, recognition sparked in the eyes hidden behind a pair of shades. "Ah, you're Shota's, aren't you?"
Izuku mentally cursed himself for his reputation with the underground hero. How had he somehow been categorized as one of his? "He wishes."
Present Mic shook his head with a small smile, looking down at Emiko. "This little listener has to get to class before the first bell, you two better hurry."
"Not worried," Izuku said while grabbing her hand and snapping his fingers. He didn't like to flaunt his quirks in public, but getting away from the voice hero as fast as possible was more important than his anonymity. Besides, Nezu already knew about that quirk so it didn't really matter.
"Whoa, that felt like a roller coaster," Emiko said once the landed just down the hall.
Izuku smiled at the analogy under his mask. "You didn't hear this from me, but your brother puked the first time I teleported with him."
The fun fact had the intended effect, causing the girl to giggle behind her free hand as they walked down the corridors toward her class. "Shouldn't he be used to that feeling though? With all the swinging around his does with his tape."
"You'd think, huh?"
They came to a stop outside of class 1-A, Emiko's grip on his hand trembling slightly. The girl was scared to death and Izuku thought he needed to have a little chat with her homeroom teacher. Whatever he did to make her that terrified wasn't sitting right with him. He'd literally killed her and she somehow felt safer with him.
"He won't yell at you, Emi," he assured her gently. "Not while I'm here. Between you and me, Aizawa's scared shitless of me."
It wasn't technically a lie. Aizawa was terrified of the idea of Izuku, of the power he holds, of the possibility that one day he might snap and get lost in the darkness forever. Of course, that would never happen, especially with Hanta around, but the white lie seemed to relax Emiko and that was all he needed.
Izuku slid the door open, knowing it was now or never. Just like with Haru's class, the room went silent. Unlike Haru's class, the teacher was already at the front of the room and looking at the two of them completely unimpressed.
"Midoriya," Aizawa curtly greeted. "Sero, you're late."
"That'd be my fault," Izuku easily lied, taking the fall before the teacher could even start bitching at the girl. "Got caught up chatting with your husband. Did he do something new with his hair?"
The villain relished in the way Aizawa's jaw ticked at the mention of Yamada. Not only that, but his class was now in an uproar, because not only was their stoic and strict teacher married, but he was married to a man?
You throw my real name around, I throw your husband around. What a fun little game we have, Eraserhead.
Izuku didn't break from their little staring contest as he urged Emiko into the room. "Go find your seat, Emi."
The girl wordlessly walked to an empty desk while Aizawa shut his students up with one sharp glare. Once they were taken care of, he turned back to Izuku. "What're you doing on school grounds?" he asked in a sharp tone.
Izuku pointed to Emiko and then the door, looking around in confusion. "Dropping the girls off? Was that not obvious or something?"
A few students snickered at his sass, but were once again shut up by a single look from their teacher.
"Don't disrespect me in my own classroom," Aizawa said with a tired sigh. "It's bad enough you do it in the field."
A few shocked gasps made their way through the room.
"Is he a pro hero then?"
"He must be underground, I don't recognize him."
"You don't know every pro hero, Takashi."
"It makes sense though, because he's wearing a mask. If he's underground he wouldn't want people to know what he looks like!"
"Thanks for that," Izuku grumbled, hearing all the gossip going around the class.
He watched as the student sitting behind Emiko tapped on her shoulder until she turned to them. "You know him, Sero," the girl whispered unsuccessfully. "Is he a hero?"
The dark haired girl just nodded her head with a small smile.
"And now we're lying," Izuku sighed. "Not very heroic at all. She get's that from Hanta," he said to the tired teacher at the front of the room.
"Don't you have a village to terrorize?" Aizawa asked, sarcasm dripping from his words. "Get out of my classroom and let me teach."
"If I start terrorizing the village you won't be able to teach, you'll be too busy chasing me," Izuku called as he left the class, giving a small wave to Emiko as he went.
"Don't make me assign Shinsou to guard duty!"
"He wouldn't be able to keep up, old man!"
Alright, here. I caved and wrote another one. I'm a sucker for Dadzawa, in case that wasn't already blatantly obvious.
