Chapter 8
"You see Kimberly, there comes a time in your life where you feel defeated. Like you have no control over it and you surrender to this cruel ruler called life. Everything seems hopeless, an abyss of nothing. You lose your reason to live, you forget the purpose of your life," Grandpa L says, staring at grandpa H who was in the kitchen, cooking with my mother, smiling "I'd lost my reason to live too. I'd lost Harry and it wasn't even his fault. I was young and reckless and we were both so in love. There was nothing that could separate us and we used to to dream about our future together. But like I said, I was young and reckless. I didn't really achieve much in life but I was happy because I had Harry by my side and he was never disappointed with me, never. I was so in love with your grandfather, God, I still am. So I did the only logical thing, I asked him to marry me. He didn't object really, he was, still is, in love with my stupid self too. We were thrilled really. We didn't think anyone would even have a problem. So well we got married, on our own without informing our families. Our friends were there with us of course. Because who even would have a problem , right? So well we got married and then things got worse from there. Harry's parents well, they hated me. Because I didn't have a proper job and Harry, your grandpa was and still is the brightest person ever. He obviously got a posh job and he even told me he would take care of our house,"
"From where did you get a house?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Well that's the only thing my parents agreed to give me, they are kinda rich."
"Oh, continue."
"Yeah so Harry's family didn't want him to live with a loser like me and well...it got pretty bad from there. When Harry told them he was married to me, all hell broke lose. His parents didn't let him live with me and fuck I had to do something. So I got my Drama degree to some use and became a teacher. Of course it wasn't much but I had to do something to redeem myself to Harry's family. And it took them some time but eventually they let Harry and I be. Everyone now is long gone, my friends and we are old, my parents and Harry's parents have passed away and I can't believe I'm ancient. My sisters are growing old too. You're twenty five now!and you're my grand daughter. I can't believe we have made it this far you know? The thing is Kim, in life sometimes you get out of your comfort zone for the people you love. You make great sacrifices. You change for the better. Of course i didn't change fully, your grandfather fell in love with this idiot it would have been a shame. But then we were better, yeah there were some assholes trying to tear us apart but we always made it Kim. When you love a person truly, you can't live without them. I had to for months and it was horrible, I can't imagine a life without Harry and I don't want to. I hope you realise that love isn't always about the good things, it's about the sacrifices you're ready to make for your other half. I made mine, and I'm glad I did."
"Why are you telling me all this?" Kim asks, confused.
"I just want you to know, that no matter what happens in life, no matter what you have go through—never forget who you are and never let anything stop you from being happy. You have to learn to fight. In the end it all pays off." Louis says, smiling at Kim.
"I'll always remember that grandpa." Kim says, hugging him.

The next morning the Tomlinson's end up in the hospital. Kim watches her grandfather Louis laying on the hospital bed through the glass.
"He's not going to make it." The doctors had said.
Kim looked over to where her other grandfather was, holding his daughter who was crying, tears rolling down his wrinkled cheeks.
"Remember what we taught you, always be brave." Harry says to his daughter, kissing her forehead.
"I will always be brave Papa." Kim hears her mother say. Kim let's her tears flow.
"I must be with your Dad now." Harry says, caressing his daughters hair and pulling away from the hug.
"Kimberly," Harry says, walking over to her, trying to smile, "take care of your parents like your parents took care of us. Family is very important."
Kim doesn't know why he's saying all this, he's right here, he's not going anywhere. Right?
"I will try my best grandpa."
"Good, good."
Kim watches as Harry makes his way inside Louis' room, smiling down at him, Louis' returns the smile, the corner of his eyes crinkling.
"I love you, Louis. Always have, always will." Harry says, holding Louis' hand in his.
"I love you more. I can't believe we made it this far." Louis says, his smile unwavering.
"Yeah who would have thought, I'm so glad we didn't listen to anyone back then. Look at what we would have been missing." Harry says, making space besides Louis and fitting himself next to Louis.
Louis curls his fingers around Harry's waist,"I love you."
"I love you too,Lou."
There they lay on the hospital bed, the little spoon being held by his big spoon,a different age, a different bed. It didn't make a difference to Harry. He being held by the love of his life, by his husband.
It was the last time though.
*****
Kim lost both of her grandfathers that day.
She had smiled through her tears,
"Those idiots even died together. What forever bullshit is that?"
