Tread Lightly

By the time everyone was leaving, Stevie had fallen asleep on the couch. He touched her cheek softly, waking her up as carefully as he could.

"Hey, Steph, party's over" he whispered.

"What?" she grumbled, tossing her head this way and that.

"Let's get you to bed." He tried his best to pull her up but couldn't. He would never tell Stevie, but she was getting kind of heavy in the late stages and he couldn't just scoop her up anymore. "Stephanie, come on sweetie"

"What about our guests?" she asked, eyes still closed.

"They're gone, everyone is." Her eyes opened slowly and she squinted in the light.

"Gone?"

"Yes."

"Oh no! Oh Lindsey, I'm so sorry!" she said, suddenly wide awake.

"It's okay, you're tired."

"I'm a terrible host, and I know I had to have embarrassed you." Her forehead was creased and he shook his head.

"You didn't! Please don't worry about it. I'm sure everyone understands and personally, I think it's so cute."

Stevie rolled her eyes and held out a hand. "Will you help me up?" Lindsey found it much easier now that she was conscious and walked up the stairs with her. She sleepily waddled to the bathroom and started the shower. "Will you help me with my zipper?"

"Of course. Any excuse to see my woman naked." Lindsey made eye contact with her in the mirror and she giggled.

"You're such a perv." He unzipped her dress, helping her take it off. He hung it up for her, making a mental note to take it to the dry cleaners with his suit the next day. Stevie removed her makeup, undergarments then carefully got into the shower. She shampooed her hair, massaging her scalp in small luxurious circles, then rinsed it out. She continued with conditioner, leaving it to sink in for a few minutes while she lathered her body with a scrumptious-smelling body wash. Lindsey waited for her, listening to her hum and sing while she bathed.

He kept thinking back to their interview and how they both chose honesty as the key to a happy and healthy marriage. He heard her say that he would never keep secrets from her, that he is always upfront and truthful. He sighed, running his hands through his hair. He had to come clean. He couldn't keep something so big from her. She was due to have their daughter soon and he didn't want to start this new chapter based on lies.

She emerged, smoothing on a thick cream to moisturize her skin. He watched as she massaged it all over her thighs, her belly and breasts. She pulled on a pair of little pajama shorts and a tee shirt. She stepped into her slippers and began to blow dry her long blonde hair. When she was satisfied, or sufficiently tired and unable to continue, she turned off the hair dryer and wrapped the cord around it, putting it back in the cupboard. She turned around, smiling at Lindsey.

"Your turn, baby." Lindsey nodded, stripping off his clothes. He felt eyes on him and turned to see Stevie sitting on the bed cross-legged, watching him.

"And you say I'm the perv?"

"I can't help it. You look so good, Linds." she said with a giggle. She blushed bright pink, embarrassed that he had caught her but unwilling to stop gawking. She sighed, aroused and waiting for Lindsey. She wished he would hurry up in there, even though he had just gotten in.

As he washed his hair, he began to feel even more conflicted. His thoughts wouldn't leave him alone. He had the potential to destroy all of the progress they had made with his confession. How could he have done what he did to her? How could he tell her about it now? He rinsed his hair and washed his body, practically scrubbing it raw like he had the night he came back from Lydia's. He still didn't remember what happened and though she tried to contact him many times, he ignored her. The water went cold and he got out, wrapping the towel around his waist. She was watching him again and he felt uncomfortable. Would she even be here when he spilled his secrets and let them all out in the open? He deserved a whole lot more than broken decanters, egged cars and clothes tossed into the garden.

"Hurry up, baby, I want you." she said seductively.

"In a minute."

"A minute is too long" she whined and he laughed a little but his smile quickly faded. He had to tell her, there was no more waiting.

"Hey, Steph?"

"Yes, Linds?" She sat a little straighter when he entered the room completely nude. He dug in the drawer and pulled out a pair of pajama pants. "Leave them off."

"Uh..." He considered it a moment but ultimately put them on. "Steph, we should talk." He turned to look at her. She saw the serious look on his face and she uncrossed her legs, placing her feet on the floor.

"What's going on?"

"I haven't been completely honest and I need to be. We are going to welcome our little girl soon and I can't stand you not knowing everything you should about me. You deserve to know the truth."

"You're scaring me, Lindsey." Stevie stood but Lindsey held up a hand.

"You should be sitting down." he said and she obeyed, sitting back down on the bed. "Um...so I guess I will start with the obvious."

"Which is?" He couldn't look at her, but he knew he couldn't hide anymore.

"Stevie, when you caught Lydia and I kissing, that wasn't the first time. We uh, that's also not the furthest we went. We slept together."

"When you went to talk to her?" Stevie asked, her lip quivering already.

"No, I still don't remember that night and I may never. It was before that. We slept together for almost a year."

"Oh my god" She closed her eyes. "Is that everything? Is that the whole truth?"

"About her, yes. She wasn't the first one."

"When...when was the first time?" She was calm and that scared him. He could tell she was obviously hurt but she was sitting perfectly still, listening to what he had to say.

"1975" he said and a sob escaped her lips. "I was afraid you wouldn't stay with me if you knew."

"Is that it- 1975 with whoever and the last time with Lydia? Lindsey, I need to know."

"No, there's more"

"No..." she sobbed, her hands covering her face. "How many more? One, two?"

"I'm sorry, Stevie."

"How many?" she repeated.

"Three...or four." he told her truthfully and Stevie stood up. "I'm sorry."

"Are you sleeping with someone now, besides..." She stopped, trying to calm herself as tears streamed down her face. "Besides me?"

"No, Lydia was the last one."

"Okay."

"I never meant to hurt you."

"Okay."

"Say something, baby" he said, standing before her. "What are you feeling?"

"How do you expect me to feel, Lindsey?" She pushed herself away from him. "I love you and to find out you've slept with...what was it? Six women? We've been together for over a decade! That's almost a different woman a year!"

"I'm sorry"

"And you made me feel like shit if I didn't want to make love, when I was discouraged by the endless negative tests...all the while you were sleeping with someone else! Why didn't you tell me before? Or a better question is, why didn't you stop after the first time? Do I disgust you? Do I not do it for you? Are you bored?"

"No, honey. Jesus, it's not like that!"

"Then what is it?!" she screams.

"Calm down" he said, seeing her become stressed.

"I can't calm down!" She began to pace, one hand on her back, the other rubbing circles over her belly. "My husband, the love of my life, the father of my child, just told me he had cheated on me countless times...he continued to do it for no reason at all!"

"I used to drink a lot, Stevie. These women were all from bars, one night stands."

"Is that supposed to make me feel better?! How dare you act like this is no big deal!" She picked up a pillow from the bed and threw it at him.

"I'm sorry" he said, blocking it.

"I was here, telling my parents I loved you and I had to stay! I thought you were so selfless for saying you'd give up music just to marry me! I thought you loved me, but I'm not even enough for you!"

"I do love you and you are enough for me!"

"Obviously not because you've been fucking other women!" She threw another pillow, then another.

"Will you stop?!" he yelled, getting irritated.

"No!" She threw another pillow, looking around for something else. She reached for something off Lindsey's nightstand, deciding on his alam clock. He saw the look in her eyes and took it from her.

"Stop!"

"Fuck you, Lindsey! Get out of my sight! I never want to see you again! You're a jealous, possessive, lying, cheating bastard!" She threw the decorative blanket from the bottom of the bed at him and he caught it, tossing it in the floor.

"Stevie!"

"No!"

"Baby!"

"No, I am not your baby! I hate you!"

"You don't mean that."

"Yes I do! I have never hated a single person in my life...I hate you! I fucking hate you!" She was sobbing uncontrollably when suddenly she gasped.

"Are you done?" he asked, breathing heavily and she shook her head. He followed her gaze down and his eyes widened. "What the fuck..."

"Perfect" she sniffed, tears continuing to fall down her face. "Just fucking perfect!" She was still angry but her voice had softened and he wanted to tread lightly.

"Stevie, what's going on?" Panic filled his senses as he looked at Stevie's face, ghostly pale.

"My water broke" she said, clearly in a state of shock herself.
