Rejected

By the time Stevie comes down the stairs, the party is much more wild that usual. She immediately finds Lindsey telling tour stories with Mick to a group of overly-fascinated women. Stevie pulls herself into Lindsey's side, asserting that he's off limits, and he wraps an arm around her. He kisses her hair and she smiles a little.

"That necklace looks even better than I thought it would on you. You look gorgeous." he whispers. She touches the heavy, statement necklace covered in emeralds, leaning her weight into him affectionately. He kisses her again, loving how she's hanging all over him. When the women speak in their high pitched voices, Stevie stares them down. They touch Lindsey and Mick, wordlessly inviting them away from the women they came with and that doesn't sit well with Stevie.

"Babe, let's mingle. We have other guests."

"I'm happy here." he tells her and she sighs.

"Please?" He looks at her and she gives him the very best puppy dog eyes she can. After a moment, he finally nods, leading her away from his group to find someone else to speak with.

"I have another present for you but it hasn't arrived yet."

"For what?"

"Our anniversary. I know it's not for another couple of weeks but--"

"You shouldn't have."

"It's all set up. I talked to the guy last night and it should have been delivered by now."

"Last night?"

"Yeah"

"You talked to the guy last night?" Stevie asks and he nods, having already answered the question seemingly a million times. Before she could inquire further, he is absorbed in another conversation. The group of men in tacky suits talk endlessly about production and mixing. Standing close to the bar has done no favors for any of them as they are all three sheets to the wind with no hope of return. They have taken it upon themselves to hand Lindsey more drinks as well and create a game of it. Stevie watches her husband become consumed with alcohol, his inhibitions becoming lax then abandoned completely. The party ramps up, becoming loud, joints are being passed around like party favors and drinks are spilled on their expensive rugs. Men are  climbing the stairs with drunk women, trying to find a place to make it out of the sight of others. Stevie, more than once, has to steer them back to the party. She doesn't want any of her rooms defiled in such a way. Lindsey brings her into a different group and they're now talking about who in Hollywood they'd want to make it with, if given the chance, or who they have already slept with. Lindsey is laughing drunkenly, groping Stevie's behind, biting her collarbone or finding his hand down the front of her dress. She retrieves his hand and pushes him off her and he gives a low growl. She hates when he gets this way.

She pulls herself from the group, mingling with a couple of the women she had met while they vacationed in Hawaii the previous summer. It was only coincidence that they lived so close to the couple and Stevie was more than happy to see them. Neither of them were drinking alcohol and Stevie relaxed a little.

"Where's Lindsey?" A tall, dark haired women with a deep tan named Maureen asks.

"At the bar with his buddies."

"Oh look, Harold is over there too." Maureen says, obviously unimpressed. "I asked him not to drink."

"Men never listen" Stevie says, looking back over at her buffoon of a husband, now leading a round of shots.

"No they don't. You see, we're trying to have a baby."

"Oh?"

"And I read an article in one of those maternity/baby magazines at the gyno that said staying away from alcohol could help...y'know?"

"Hmmm" Stevie says.

"Yeah, I could tell you all about it. I've been reading so much about the subject lately and relaying it to Harold but he obviously doesn't care. Are you and Lindsey thinking about having a baby too?" The other woman standing with Maureen, Dora, seems mostly interested in the conversation as she's spotted her husband Eli and waved him over.

"I don't know if you could say that..." Stevie says looking down into her water glass.

Dora and Eli begin talking with Maureen and Stevie uses this as an opportunity to check on the bar and caterers. She's exhausted and just wants to go to bed but knows she can't just leave her guests. She passes by Lindsey and he catches her hand. "Where are you going?"

"Checking up on things, making sure the party is going as smooth as it can, why?"

"Stay, talk." he urges.

"I'm tired." she says.

"Okay. I'll dry out" he says and she nods, smiling.

"Thank you, sweetheart." She strokes his face and he pulls her hand from his cheek, kissing her palm. He moves away from his drunken buddies, grabbing an ice water from the bar to flush the alcohol from his system.

At nearly four in the morning, Lindsey is still relaxed but not as loose as he was. He and Stevie are in the gallery discussing the pieces they had chosen with some of their more sober guests, having closed off the room early in the evening due to the rowdiness. Stevie beamed as he spoke at length about their travels and which pieces came from where. Lindsey wrapped an arm around her, tilting her face toward his and he kissed her lips so softly. Is this a real kiss or staged?, she thought to herself. She doesn't remember a time when he had kissed her like that outside of the bedroom. It was tender and lacked real passion but it was chaste and plenty enjoyable.

"I love you" he says.

"I love you more"

Moving toward the front of the house again, Stevie gave a small tour of the downstairs while Lindsey praised his beautiful wife, saying she is the finest thing in the house. This got chuckles and whistles from the guests as he kissed her yet again. Stevie felt butterfly flutters in her stomach as she did the first time he kissed her all those years ago.

The party was finally winding down. After Lindsey had thanked a few guests for coming and made sure they safely exited, Stevie took his hand and pulled him toward the stairs.

"Thank you for tonight, Linds."

"You don't have to thank me. I was drunk for most of the night."

"But you took the hint and stopped when I wanted  you to. That's very considerate."

"I'm trying. You know I'd do anything for you."

"And I for you. I, um, I have something to tell you. It's big news...huge news, and well, it's life changing."

"What is it?" he asks.

"Lindsey, I'm--" Stevie looks up at him and out of the corner of her eye she sees a familiar, yet unwelcome, face. Her expression changes and Lindsey turns. He immediately releases Stevie from his arms, heading right over to the tall, buxom blonde in the foyer.

Stevie sees off a few other guests that pass by, barely able to force a smile as she is left feeling hurt and rejected by her own husband.
