Behind Closed Doors
Stevie had made the call to Dr Banzo that the experiment had ended a week ago and a wrap-up therapy session was scheduled. It would be their first one together since the initial assessment and they were both nervous. She was tired, emotionally drained and had so much to process. The whole journey was extraordinary and she had books upon books of notes, poems and journal entries for their therapist. Lindsey watched her carefully pack them all into a tote bag and simply shook his head, chuckling to himself.
"What are you laughing about, Mr Buckingham?" Stevie asked with a crooked smirk, turning her head to look at him.
"Nothing, just how serious you took this whole thing."
"Apparently not serious enough as I ended up pregnant."
"I took advantage."
"No you didn't. We made love and we needed it, we deserved it."
"And man, was it good!" Lindsey said, making her blush.
"Obviously" She smoothed her barely detectable bump.
"Are you happy?"
"I'm very happy" Stevie said, turning around and wrapping her arms around her husband. "Do you think he will be mad at us?"
"Does it matter what Dr Bozo thinks?"
"Can you stop calling him that?" she asked, with a playful swat to his chest.
"Listen here, you, me and the little one can all attest to this experiment being a complete flop."
"I guess" Stevie went back to arranging her notebooks and journals so they fit in the bag, but decided to accept defeat due to exhaustion.
"Would you like a cup of tea, mama?" Lindsey asked from the kitchen.
"Yes, please" came her sweet reply and Lindsey smiled.
"You amaze me."
"Why?"
"I don't know, you're just you and I love that."
"Aww, Linds!"
"Don't you dare cry!" he said with a smile as he pointed at her. "I know it's hormones but I can't take the tears. It breaks my heart."
"I will try, I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize, I understand." The kettle was on the stove top and he went to check on Arabella who was still asleep.
"What are you doing?"
"Checking to make sure we had ample time alone" He had a mischievous look in his eye and she knew what he meant by that instantly.
"Oh yeah? What are your plans?"
"Wouldn't you like to know!" He poured hot water into her mug, dropped in the sachet and let it steep.
"I would."
"Come here, you pretty little thing, you!" He beckoned to her and she joined him in the kitchen. Lindsey wrapped her in his arms once again. "Lots of terrible, awful, no good things"
"Mmmm...really?"
"Oh yeah, tons."
"Any of those things I can do for you?"
"Maybe just one if you're not too tired"
"I could manage."
He laughed, kissing her forehead. "You know I love you, don't you?"
"I do, and I love you too."
"And I love our two beautiful children, our life together..."
"Uh-oh, where is this going?"
"We talked about buying a house and well, we have one."
"What? How?"
"I picked it out myself. I know you don't like this kind of surprise but it has a lot of room, and a big yard for Arabella and eventually this little one to run around in. It felt like home, Steph."
"Really?" she asked and he nodded. "Well, when can I see it?"
"How about after our final session?"
"That's perfect. Oh, Lindsey, thank you!" she said, kissing him repeatedly. Before they knew it, their clothes were strewn all over the living room and Stevie had forgotten all about her tea.
--------
The next morning, Stevie was very sick. Lindsey held her hair and helped her clean herself up. He started the shower for her and grabbed her a glass of water with a few crackers to settle her stomach.
"We should reschedule"
"No" Stevie told him, stepping into the shower to refresh herself.
"You don't feel good. We could wait a little longer."
"I want to be done. We can discuss his experiment then leave the practice. We don't need it. I think we're fine. Maybe we're supposed to be a little fucked up" Stevie said and Lindsey laughed. "Jesus, this morning sickness catches me off guard every time."
"It will be over soon"
"Hopefully." She turned off the water and stepped out of the shower. Lindsey dried her off without copping a feel for a change and he wrapped her in her pink fluffy bath robe. Lindsey watched as she got her toiletries together, careful not to bend down or stand up to quickly as the swift motion almost always made her sick.
"What about twins?" Lindsey said randomly, watching Stevie apply her make up.
"Let's focus on one at a time"
"I meant, what if it's twins? Everything is different this time, from what you've told me."
"Every pregnancy is different." she said with a shrug. "Are you trying to say I'm fat, Lindsey? That's very rude."
"No, not at all, I'm just--"
"I was just kidding. No...I've thought about it too and well, maybe I could get an ultrasound soon. Would you like to go with me?"
"Of course."
"And we can bring Arabella. I think she would like to see the baby on the screen."
"Or babies..." Lindsey corrected and Stevie smiled. She finished with her makeup and moved on to clothes. She pulled out a simple long sleeved black dress and worked on her hair. Lindsey retrieved her boots for her and then he quickly got ready himself. Their daughter was awake now, he could tell by the giggling and babbling coming from her room. He left briefly to bring her into the bedroom and lay her on the bed where she cuddled up with her teddy bear and almost went right back to sleep. Stevie stroked her long beautiful hair and sighed.
"When I look at her, I always want more just like her."
"We may get our wish" Lindsey said, rubbing her belly. "Christine will be here to watch her in a few minutes. Would you like to try to eat something?"
"Something small. I don't want to risk getting sick again."
Lindsey understood and went to work on frying an egg while Stevie let Christine in. "Hello!" Christine said, hugging Stevie.
"Hello, how are you?"
"Shouldn't I be asking you?" Christine smiled knowingly and Stevie chuckled.
"So big mouth told you?" Stevie teased, looking over her shoulder to make sure Lindsey was listening.
"Hey! I'm the one making your food lady." He joked back, waving the spatula at her and she laughed.
"He did but only because he was so excited. Congratulations. You make beautiful babies and frankly, I need more babies to spoil so the more the merrier."
"You think?"
"I know. So let's catch up for a few while we still have time. Where's the baby?"
"Asleep in our bed."
"Aww well when she wakes up, do you think she will be upset that I'm here?"
"No of course not, she loves you. You're fun and she looks forward to seeing you. Could have something to do with the treats you bring her." Stevie teased.
"That's the one perk to not having children. I can dose them up with sugar and get them all hyper just to send them back to their parents!" The women laughed and Lindsey told Stevie, her food was done.
"Finally!" Stevie ate quickly, as if she hadn't eaten for a month and both watched her, quite amused. She was done in no time flat, she brushed her teeth, careful not to trigger her gag reflex and left.
Pulling up to the building that housed their therapist's office was strange. Lindsey pressed the button on the elevator, waited around for the terrible stop that almost caused Stevie to lose her breakfast then walked down the grey and maroon hallway. She held his hand and checked in, waiting for Dr Banzo. Like magic, he appeared in the doorway and ushered them both inside.
"I'm so happy to see you both...so, how was it?" He asked. Lindsey and Stevie looked at each other before sitting down.
"Well, you see..." Stevie began as Dr Banzo shut the office door.
