THE ONE WITH BEING ALONE.
EPISODE THREE.
♡
Zara and Monica had a plan: for Zara, she was focused on her getting the latest draft of her novel done; and for Monica, she was busy with jam. It was a little crazy in the kitchen with the fruit overspilling and the jam bubbling, but Zara only had a little space for her laptop.
"Hey, look at me," Monica greeted her brother and Rachel. "I'm making jam."
"And I've almost finished my edits," Zara added with a grin.
"We've been at it since four this morning," said Monica.
"Where'd you get fruit at four in the morning?" Ross questioned.
"Went down to the docks," Monica told them. "Rach, bet you didn't know you can get it wholesale."
"I didn't know there were docks," Rachel confessed.
There was a knock at the door as Joey came in with Chandler following. Zara's smile vanished, but not because of Chandler this time; Joey had his arm in a sling. Seeing him, they were all sympathetic as they greeted him.
"Is it broken?" Ross asked.
"No," Joey answered. "But I got to wear this for a couple of weeks."
"Did you tell the doctor you did it jumping on your bed?" Rachel questioned.
"No," said Joey. "I had a whole story worked out, but then...Chandler sold me out."
"Well, I'm sorry, Joe," Chandler replied. "I didn't think the doctor was going to buy that it just fell out of the socket."
Zara smiled again. "Oh, Joey. Even the kids in my class are more creative than that."
"Hey," Joey protested. "My arms in a sling, you gotta be nice to me."
"I'll try," Zara offered, holding up a piece of fruit. "Would you like a peach?"
"What is this?" Joey questioned, noticing the chaos for the first time as he took the squishy piece of fruit from Zara's hand. "Fruit?"
"Good job, Joey," Zara teased but was still nice. "You've earned a gold star."
There was another frown on Joey's face, but Zara was still smiling.
"Monica's making jam," Rachel told them.
"Woah, jam? I love jam!" Joey exclaimed, turning to face Chandler. "Hey, how come we never have jam at our place?"
"Because the kids need new shoes," Chandler replied.
"I'm going into business, people," Monica stated, not stopping with a bowl of fruit placed on the table next to Zara, making her workspace even smaller. "I'm sick and tired of being depressed about Richard. I needed a plan — a plan to get over my man. And what's the opposite of man? Jam!"
Zara kept her eyes on her laptop screen, forcing herself not to look at Chandler. So far, Zara's plan was working as a distraction, but Chandler always popped up to shatter any progress Zara had made.
"Oh, Joey don't—"
Looking over, Joey had helped himself to the jam with a wooden spoon.
"It's way too hot!"
Joey felt the temperature on his tongue as he spat the jam back into the pan. Realising what he had done, Joey froze, becoming aware of Monica's anger.
"This will just be my batch," Joey suggested.
Of course, the jam-making ended up being too much for Zara with the sickly sweet scent and the constant storm of Monica in the kitchen. Instead of heading to her bedroom, Zara ended up sitting in the living area of Chandler and Joey's place with her laptop in her lap.
Chandler was out with Janice (Zara did not care to know anything more) and Joey was already impatiently bored with his injury. In his chair, Joey was flickering through the channels as Zara had stolen Chandler's chair.
"Zara, I'm bored," Joey moaned. "Can't we do something?"
"I'm working and you're injured," Zara reminded him.
"You've been working since this morning."
"Because I have deadlines."
"You can have a break," Joey told her. "Come on, a couple of hours of Joey time."
"Joey time?" Zara questioned, raising her eyebrow at him. "What do you have in mind?"
There was silence for a moment with it being obvious that Joey had no set plan.
"Oh, I know!" Joey decided. "Chandler rented Die Hard."
Zara sighed. "Again?"
"I thought you liked it?"
"Yeah, but you guys watch it too much."
"Please," Joey pleaded. "Watch it with me."
"Fine," said Zara, closing her laptop as she knew she had a soft spot for Joey and perhaps it was because he was injured. "I suppose I did say I'd be nice to you."
Joey grinned at that, but Zara had to be the one to put the videotape on with Joey struggling. With the movie starting, Zara helped herself to snacks in the apartment, offering Joey some chips too.
♡
After the film, the two headed down to the coffee house, where Monica had started handing out her jars of jam. This cheered Joey up even more over his arm as he spooned the jam onto his biscuit.
"Remember when you were a kid," said Joey to Rachel and Zara. "And your mom would drop you off at the movies with a jar of jam and a little spoon."
Rachel could only stare at Joey. "You're so pretty."
That caused Zara to smile. "If I had a mom, Joey, then I'm sure she would've given me all the jam while I was at the movies."
Rachel had moved to seat back on the sofa with Ross as Phoebe came in, greeting the five of them that had settled in their spot. Seeing her, Joey had stood too as he continue to eat his biscuit.
"Hey, oh, you know that guy who's been following me?" Phoebe started. "I talked to him today."
"You talked to him?" Joey questioned with his mouth full of food. "Are you crazy?"
"Okay. First, I'm not crazy," said Phoebe. "And second, say it, don't spray it."
"I hope you gave him a piece of your mind," Zara said.
"Well his name is Malcolm," Phoebe told them. "And he wasn't following me. I mean, he was, but just 'cause he thought I was Ursula, ugh. And that's why... that's why he couldn't just come up and talk to me 'cause of the restraining order."
"Hm," said Chandler. "Not feeling better about Malcolm."
"Oh," Phoebe said. "No, no, no. He's not like a kook, no. He's just, like, this very passionate incredibly romantic guy that just got, like, a teensy bit carried away, you know."
"Oh, yeah," Zara replied sarcastically. "We've all been there."
"And we just get along really well and he is really cute."
"Oh my God," Ross said upon seeing Phoebe's bright smile. "You've got a crush on your sister's stalker."
"No," Phoebe denied. "No, I'm just going to help him, you know, get de-Ursula-ized. You know, like I did for Joey after he went out with her."
Joey had his mouth full again. "But I didn't stalk her."
"Okay, I asked for the news, not the weather."
Phoebe disappeared to get a drink for herself as Monica came in, seeming a fake perky kind of happy as she offered Joey another jar of jam. Already that day, Joey was going through the jars.
"Joey, this is for you," Monica placed it on the table in front of Joey and Zara. "It's blackberry-currant."
"Oh!" Joey said, unscrewing the lid as he tried the jam which resulted in an ecstatic moan.
"Okay, Joe, I got to ask," said Chandler as Monica left with a satisfied smile. "The girl from the Xerox place, buck naked or a big tub of jam?"
"Now, think carefully about this," Zara insisted.
"Put your hands together," Joey answered with a smirk.
Instead, Chandler put his hands up in surrender, where he should have known what the response would have been.
"Joey, take your time with that," Monica told him, joining them again with a drink. "That's my last batch."
Joey's voice broke. "No more jam?"
"Well, what happened with your jam plan?" Rachel questioned.
"Yeah," Zara's eyes fell on Monica. "We had a plan."
"I figured out I need to charge seventeen bucks a jar just to break even," Monica explained. "So, I've got a new plan now. Babies."
"You're going to need much bigger jars," Chandler told her.
"What are you talking about?" Ross questioned his sister.
"I'm talking about me having a baby," Monica said with her face serious.
"Are you serious?" Rachel questioned.
"Yeah," Monica insisted. "The great thing about the jam plan was I was taking control of my life. So I asked myself: what is the most important thing to me in the world? And that's when I came up with the baby plan."
"Well, aren't you forgetting something?" Ross pointed out. "What is... what is that guy's name? Dad?"
"No, look," Monica tried to make them see the vision of her plan. "It took me twenty-eight years to find one man that I want to spend my life with. If I have to wait another twenty-eight years then I'll be fifty-six before I can have a baby. And that's just stupid."
"Th-that's what's stupid?" Chandler questioned.
"I don't need an actual man," Monica insisted. "Just a couple of his best swimmers and there are places that you can go to get that...stuff."
"Down to the docks again?" Rachel guessed.
Zara stared at Monica in shock, unknowing if her friend would truly go through with it or not. At least Zara hadn't lost the plot over her heartbreak.
♡
The next day, Zara had a few chapters printed on the kitchen table as she tried to keep up with the edits and changes. Of course, Zara was still so excited to have the opportunity to be published, but now she was feeling the stress, especially on top of her full-time job.
"Joey, you're getting jam on my work," Zara complained to him.
"Sorry," Joey replied, pulling the jar closer to himself.
"Have you even stopped?" Chandler questioned.
"Monica created a timetable for me," Zara said. "If I don't get these chapters done by today then I'll be behind to make deadline. I stopped yesterday for Joey, so now I gotta catch up."
"Let me help then," Joey offered.
"Guard the jam then," Zara suggested.
"Couldn't you drop some hours at work?" Chandler asked.
"No," Zara answered. "The summer holidays are about to start, so it'll be just classroom prep for the new year soon. This is okay, it's just like writing again, but with just a little extra stress."
"And apparently less sleep," Chandler noticed.
Zara frowned, looking over at him as she met his worried gaze. "Chandler, I'm okay. It's just temporary."
"Then I'll help," said Chandler, picking up a chapter. "You do your magic and I'll read."
Zara felt her face soften, especially upon seeing that sweet small smile on Chandler's face. While Zara was stubborn enough to do it all herself, she found herself accepting his help like she always did.
Even Joey helped with keeping his sticky fingers away from the pages. At one point he offered a spoonful of jam to the two.
"Nah, that's all right," Chandler told him. "I just had a jar of mustard."
"It's too sticky," Zara said, fearing for her laptop too.
"Okay," said Monica, coming out of her bedroom. "Sperm donor #03815! Come on down!" Stepping into the living area, everyone's attention turned to Monica in disbelief. "Okay, 6'2", 170 pounds. And he describes himself as a male Geena Davis."
"You mean there's more than one of us?" Chandler questioned.
"You can't do this," Ross insisted. "If you do this I'm going to, I'm..."
"You're going to what?" Monica demanded.
"I'm going to tell mom," Ross decided.
"Honey, I'm sorry, but he's right," Rachel said. "I love you, but you're crazy."
"So crazy," Zara insisted. "You're not thinking straight."
"What? Why?" Monica questioned. "Why is this crazy? So this isn't the ideal way to do something." Ross tried cutting in, but Monica wasn't having it. "Lips moving, still talking. I mean, it may not be ideal, but... I'm so ready. Now, I see the way Ben looks at you. It makes me ache, you know?"
"Check it out," Joey interrupted, holding up his cracker. "Jam crackers!"
"Okay, all right," Monica continued. "All right, how's this: 27, Italian-American guy. He's an actor...born in Queen's. Wow. Big family. Seven sisters and he's the only...boy."
Zara's eyes were already on Joey, who was oblivious as he ate his jam cracker.
"Oh my God," Monica said. "Under personal comments: New York Knicks rule."
"Yeah, the Knicks rule!" Joey exclaimed.
"Joey, this is you," Monica told him.
"Let me see," Joey stood up to check the donor paperwork. "Oh, right. Yeah."
"When did you go to a sperm bank?" Monica asked.
"After I did that sex study down at NYU," Joey answered, turning to face Chandler. "Hey, remember that sweater I gave you for your birthday?"
"And that's how you bought it?" Chandler questioned.
"No," Joey answered. "That's what I was wearing when I donated."
Zara laughed at that, but she was in shock too at the discovery.
"I'm kind of surprised there's any of my boys left," Joey said.
"Well, honey, it is pretty competitive," Monica told him.
"Not everyone wants a pretty actor," Zara explained, trying to be nice, but it was hard.
"I mean, I've got an actual rocket scientist here."
"Maybe I should call the place and get them to put my Days of Our Lives gig on here," Joey said. "You know, juice this puppy up a little."
"Good idea," Zara told him. "I'm sure Erika will be the first in line."
The front door opened then and Phoebe came in. Already there was a joyous smile on her face as she greeted the group of friends.
"How's the maniac?" Ross asked with Zara becoming intrigued, leaving her laptop as she perched on the end of the armchair next to Rachel.
"Oh, he's yummy," Phoebe answered. "We did a little kissing."
"Phoebe, what are you doing?" Rachel asked her.
"Oh, no, no, no," said Phoebe. "He's not into that stuff anymore. He quit for me."
"He quit stalking your identical twin for you?" Zara repeated, wondering if Phoebe had forgotten that Ursula and Phoebe were identical.
"Pheebs, this guy has been obsessed with your sister for god knows how long, okay?" Rachel tried. "You don't just give up something like that."
"Look, he gave me his night vision goggles and everything, so..."
"You're taking the word of a guy who has night vision goggles?" Ross questioned.
"What?" Phoebe replied. "He's not still following her. You think he's still following her?"
"Pheebs, wake up and smell the restraining order," Chandler told her.
"What are you saying I should do?" Phoebe asked them.
"I think if you really like this guy you should just trust him," Monica said.
"Thank you, Monica."
"Or you could follow him," Joey suggested. "And see where he goes."
"I like that," Zara decided. "Can I join?"
"Oh, that's what I would do," Monica realised. "Forget mine."
Of course, Zara was not allowed to go with Phoebe, but she had settled to work in her bedroom with no distractions. But, when she left her bedroom the following morning, she found Joey comforting Monica.
Catching Joey's gaze, he shook his head to tell Zara that Monica wasn't going to the sperm bank. The craziness had spiralled into that devastating pit again as Zara sighed, feeling for her friend.
Sitting down, Joey pulled away as Zara's arms wrapped around her.
"There's someone out there who wants kids as much as you do," Zara told her. "When you'll find him, it'll be worth the wait. I promise you, Mon."
Monica held onto Zara tighter, wanting to believe in those words.

EPISODE FOUR.
♡
On the television screen, Amazing Discoveries was on as they had all gathered to watch Joey's recent acting opportunity. At the small glimpse of Joey, they were all excited, eager to watch.
"Can we not watch this?" Joey asked.
In response, they all hushed him.
They carried on watching as Joey's character struggled with a carton of milk as they all waited to what the amazing discovery was.
"You said it, Mike," Joey said on screen as he tore the carton with milk spilling. "Oh! Oh! There's got to be a better way."
"And there is, Kevin!"
"Kevin," Zara sniggered. "That name does not suit you, Joe."
"Can we please turn this off?" Joey asked again.
"No way, Kevin," Rachel replied.
The show continued with the new product being revealed to make opening a milk carton even easier.
"Are you intrigued?" Ross asked Chandler.
"You're flinging-flanging right I am," Chandler told him.
On screen, Kevin (Joey's character) tried using the product as he pushed it into the carton, twisting it into place until he was ready to start pouring.
"Wow this is easy," said Kevin, pouring himself a glass of milk. "Now I can have milk every day."
There was an enthusiastic response from the audience that made Zara laugh, failing to cover it up like the rest of her friends.
♡
Zara had a frown on her face as she remained focused on her laptop. The screen was angled to block Chandler and Janice, but she was still very aware that the two were there.
And Zara was not jealous.
"Well, it's official," said Chandler. "There are no good movies."
"So let's go to a bad one and make out," Janice suggested.
Zara's nose screwed up, fingers tapping a little aggressively. Hearing the two kiss only made it worse as Zara's teeth ground together, trying to resist the urge to huff.
"Perhaps you would like me to turn like this so you can bunny-bump against my back," Monica told them.
Joey came in to join them then as they were all quick to greet him.
"Hey, man. What's up?"
"Maybe you can tell me?" Joey turned to face Chandler. "My agent would like to know why I didn't show up at the audition I didn't know I had today. The first good thing she gets me in weeks. How could you not give me the message?"
"Well, I tell you... I do enjoy guilt," said Chandler. "But, uh, it wasn't me."
"Yes, it was," Phoebe snitched. "It was him. Uh-huh." Hearing that, all eyes fell on Phoebe, who broke under their gazes. "Okay, it was me."
"How was it you?" Joey questioned.
"Well, it was all so crazy, you know," Phoebe explained. "I mean, Chandler was in the closet counting to ten and he was up to seven and I hadn't found a place to hide yet. Look, I meant to tell you and I wrote it all down on my hand." Phoebe hurried over, showing Joey. "See? All of it."
"Yep," Joey confirmed. "That's my audition."
"See?" Monica said. "Now this is why I keep notepads everywhere."
"Yep," said Phoebe. "And that's why we don't invite you to play."
"What is the great tragedy here?" Janice questioned. "You go get yourself another appointment."
"Well, Estelle tried, you know," Joey said, sitting down next to Zara. "The casting director told her I missed my chance."
"Well, that is unfair!" Phoebe exclaimed. "I'll call her. I'll tell her it was totally my fault."
"Pheebs, you can't do that," Joey told her. "The casing director doesn't talk to friends. She only talks to agents."
"What a sad little life she must lead," Phoebe said, picking up the phone. "Okay."
"What are you doing?" Joey asked, starting to panic.
"No, no, I know, I know," said Phoebe as she started to call with her voice pitching higher. "Hi, this is Caitlin from Phoebe Buffay's office. Um... is Anne there for Phoebe? She'll know what it's about."
"Hang up. Hang up right..."
Phoebe swatted Joey away. "Annie! Hi! Listen, we've got a problem with Joey Tribbiani. Apparently, he missed his audition. Who did he speak to in my office? Estelle? No, I don't know what to do with her. All right, so your husband leaves you and then burns down the apartment. The world does not stop."
"Is anybody else scared?" Chandler asked.
"Right, well, if Joey loses this audition then that is it for Estelle. I don't care. Annie, you are a doll," Phoebe continued, putting her thumb up at Joey. "What time can you see him? I need a pen."
At Phoebe's whisper, Chandler was quick to hand her a pen before Phoebe started writing on his neck.
"Get the woman a pad! Get the woman a pad! A pad! A pad!"
"Oh, now you want a pad," said Monica.
♡
From her bedroom, Zara carried a box of toys for her classroom as she handed them to Ross, who had Ben for the day.
Ross peered into the box, not completely satisfied as Zara rolled her eyes at him. Ben still clutched at the Barbie doll, clearly happy with it.
"Those are boy's toys, right?" Ross questioned.
"They're toys, Ross," Zara said. "Ben's happy with the Barbie doll."
"Give daddy the Barbie," Ross told his son instead. "Give me the Barbie."
Zara sighed, heading to the kitchen to help herself to some breakfast.
"Okay, how about, don't you want to play with a monster truck?" Ross suggested before he started mimicking the sound of a truck. "No? Okay, oh, oh, how about a dinosoldier?"
"Ross, you are so pathetic," Rachel announced. "Why can't your son just play with his doll?"
Then, Zara's head turned, spotting Rachel using the milk handle to pour her milk.
"It's just a doll," Zara insisted.
"I go to go to work," Monica told them, leaving her bedroom in her pink uniform. "Has anybody seen my left boob?"
"I loved that movie," Joey said while resting his head on the left boob.
Monica snatched it back. "Here it is. Joey, what are you doing?"
"I'm sorry," said Joey. "It just felt nice."
Monica stuffed her boob back into place as Chandler hurried into the apartment to look for Joey. "Joe, Joe, answer the phone."
"Hey, I only got one good arm," Joey pointed out. "You know, you should be doing stuff for me. Go get me a sweater."
"Just do it, okay?" Chandler snapped at him. "It's Janice. If I get it, I'll have to see her tonight."
Zara perked up at that, wondering if there was trouble between them. Fortunately, the ringing stopped, but Chandler didn't look happy.
"Oh, that's great," said Chandler. "I'm going to have to see her tonight."
"What's the big deal?" Rachel questioned. "Why don't you want to see Janice?"
"Okay, last night," Chandler started. "At dinner, when the meals came, she put half her chicken piccata on my plate and then she took all my tomatoes."
"And that's bad because...?" Ross questioned. "You hate chicken piccata."
"No," Chandler answered.
"You didn't want to share your tomatoes?" Ross guessed again. "Tomatoes are very important to you."
"No, it's like all of a sudden we were this couple," Chandler explained. "Okay. And this alarm started going off in my head — run for your life! Get out of the building!"
"Oh, men are unbelievable," said Rachel.
"What is it with you people?" Monica exclaimed. "I mean, the minute you start to feel something, you have to run away?"
"I know that," said Chandler, where Zara's eyes were stuck on him, but she couldn't find humour in the moment of him touching Monica's fake boob. "That's why I don't want to see her tonight. I'm afraid I'm going to say something stupid."
"Oh, you mean like that guy thing," Monica realised. "Where you act all mean and distant until you get us to break up with you."
"Hey, you know about that?" Joey questioned.
"All right, look, what do I do?" Chandler questioned. "I want to get past this. I don't want to mess this up again. I don't want to be afraid of the commitment thing. I want to go through the tunnel! To the other side!"
"Where there's no fear of commitment," Ross explained to Joey.
"I'm gonna go," Zara decided.
"Oh, Zara, I'm so sorry," Chandler apologised.
"No, it's okay. I just... don't feel comfortable with this," Zara forced a smile. "But, Chandler, if you truly care about Janice, then maybe you should face your fear."
"You really think so?" Chandler questioned.
"Yeah," said Zara, holding onto his stare,
knowing her irises betrayed her with every possible emotion. "I regret not facing mine."
If Zara had been braver earlier on, then maybe she would be the one with Chandler. Instead, here she was, so green with her jealousy, but so blue with her sadness too. The mood ring on her finger was a swirl of colours as Zara spun the ring around her finger, finding comfort.
But, with nothing else to say, Zara picked up her bag and left to go meet her agent.
♡
That night, everyone was out as Joey came into the apartment, sitting down next to Zara. If he was here, then it meant Janice was over with Chandler.
"How was your meeting today?" Joey asked.
"Good," Zara answered. "I'm on track and the novel is coming together. How was your audition?"
"I got the part," Joey told her. "I owe Phoebe one."
"Really?" Zara smiled at him. "That's amazing, Joe."
There was an innocence to Joey as he found himself smiling too. While Zara found it fun and adorable to tease Joey, she liked the small moments like this when she caught him off guard too.
"Yeah, but how are you?" Joey asked.
Zara looked away, knowing what he was implying. "I'm fine."
"I don't believe you," Joey said.
"I suppose Chandler's figuring it out with Janice," Zara said.
"Do you want to know?" Joey offered.
Zara sighed. "I don't know, we're friends, so I gotta get used to it, but... it's so hard, Joey."
"Maybe you need to move on too," Joey suggested. "Find someone else."
"Find who, though?" Zara questioned, resting her head on his shoulder as she found herself exhausted. "I'm fed up with being alone, but I'm too scared to find someone else."
"You didn't expect anything with Chandler, right?" Joey replied.
"No," said Zara. "He was my friend, so it surprised me, but... I guess it made everything easier as I could trust him more."
"Then maybe the one will come when you least expect it," Joey suggested. "Or perhaps they're already a friend, but it's not the right time."
"After Chandler, I can't risk falling for a friend again," Zara confessed. "But, I don't know, I guess I'm just tired of trying."
"You know what I think?" Joey said.
"What?" Zara questioned.
"I don't think you have to try doing anything," Joey told her. "You know, you're the kind of girl I avoid."
Zara lifted her head, looking at him. "Wow, thanks, Joey."
"No, no, listen," Joey insisted. "I know we slept together, but you're not the kind of girl I'd usually date—"
"Still not making me feel good," Zara mumbled.
"Just to sleep with," Joey finished.
"Oh," Zara realised. "But you did."
"Yeah, because you're crazy hot," Joey explained. "But... that one night was enough for you to stay in my mind. You know, I went back to the bar in the hope to find you again."
That left Zara speechless for a second. Of course, she knew how caring Joey was now, but back then, Zara had just thought Joey was a heartless guy who had taken advantage of her for sex.
"You did?" Zara questioned.
"Yeah," said Joey. "I guess you were like the one that got away. But, you know, it's me, Joey, so it probably would have just been a couple more dates before I forgot your name. Plus, I made you cry, so you hated me anyway."
There was laughter with Joey becoming awkward. Even now, Zara knew that Joey had never forgotten her name — even from just one night.
"What I'm trying to say is..." Joey cleared his throat. "You don't have to waste your time searching. Whoever it is, they'll see you and you'll forever be on their mind. You're too perfect for someone like me, but you're perfect enough for someone who deserves you."
Zara found herself too stunned to even speak. All she could do was look at Joey, remembering how good he was at charming women, but it didn't feel like an act.
"Thanks, Joey," Zara smiled at him. "You know, you deserve someone special too."
"I don't need anyone," Joey decided. "Why would I when I can sleep with as many women as I want?"
And Joey was back.
Still, though, Zara's smile didn't falter. "I guess I feel more lonely sleeping around now."
"Come on," Joey told her. "We're going out."
"I don't feel like going out," Zara confessed.
"Just for food," Joey promised, offering his one good hand to Zara. "I'll buy you Joey's special."
Taking his hand, Zara gave in, knowing it was better than sitting around and sulking about Chandler being with Janice.
