Escape From Lonesome Flats
Heading down a road as Poppy looked at the map, the four Pop Trolls finally came across the ghost town of Lonesome Flats. Which was a good thing, too, Flower's tiny feet were getting tired.
“This must be where the Country Music Trolls live," Poppy said to her friends and daughter.
“I don't sees them, though," Flower pointed out, and collapsed on the road. “Daddy, my feets hurt."
“Well, it looks like nobody's here," Branch figured, picking Flower up and heading off in the opposite direction. “We're too late. Time to go home. Come on, guys, let's go!"
“There is no ‘I quit' in ‘team!'" Poppy pointed out, headed for the town. Branch just resisted the urge to groan.
Once they reached the town, Poppy and the others got a better look at the Country Trolls, who each had four hooves like a horse instead of toes. Coming out from a saloon was their mayor, Delta Dawn. She was a beautiful Troll, with an orange body, a big, red hairdo, and a green tail. She wore a green shirt, white sparkly pants, and a tiny sheriff's hat tucked in her hair. She strummed her banjo, which had the glowing, orange Country string stringed to it, and began singing a sad tune.
We don't hope for making things better
All we want is to keep it together
Every day is a rainy day, no change in the weather
This kind of life has made our hearts as hard as leather
As Poppy, Branch, Flower and Biggie snuck through the town, they watched as a newly hatched Troll was immediately put to work with his brothers and sisters. Two children chased a tumbleweed, only for it to chase them back! As one Troll cried, his own teardrop cried with him. A heard of buffalo just lined up to a barbeque, and the burgers that came out sang with Delta Dawn.
And all these tears are from the dust in our eyes
And all these years just keep on passing us by
We all know that we're just born to die
That's the way it goes when you're just born to die
“This song is so sad," Poppy realized.
“Yeah, it is sad," Branch agreed. “But life is sad sometimes, so I kind of like it?"
“You do?" Poppy wondered. “Huh. But it's so different. Oh, they must not know that music's supposed to make you happy! That's awful!"
As Delta Dawn continued singing, two Trolls nearly fought until they pulled up their hats and danced with the rest of the Country Trolls. An elderly Troll had a heart attack and dropped dead in a pine box, which Delta Dawn closed for him.
And all these years just keep on passing us by
And all this misery makes it hard to deny
That's the way it goes when you're just born to die
“Okay, guys, guys, huddle up!" Poppy whispered to Flower and the boys. Delta Dawn eyed them curiously.
“Growly, growly, growl..." a Troll growled at her, suspicious about these colorful Trolls.
“Now, take it easy, Growly Pete!" Delta Dawn said softly. “I feel bad for them. It looks like they got beat up by a rainbow."
“First things first," Poppy said to her fellow Pop Trolls, “these trolls need some serious cheering up, and we're gonna have to go top-shelf."
Branch had a bad feeling about this. “Now, when you say ‘top-shelf,' y-you don't mean..."
“That's right," she answered, stretching her muscles. “We need to sing them the most important songs in the history of music!"
“Yes, but which ones?" Biggie asked.
Poppy narrowed her eyes and answered, “All of them!"
“And when you say ‘all of them...'"
Before Branch could finish, however, Poppy had already begun singing, and he and Biggie joined in, with Flower clapping to the beat. Poppy wasn't kidding when she said they were going to sing all of them.
This did not cheer up the Country Trolls, much to their obliviousness. Instead, they all just stared in horror, disgust, or they were just plain unamused. A mother felt the urge to cover her child's ears as he began dancing Gangnam Style. Another one with sideburns narrowed his hazel eyes at them.
Once the Pop Trolls finished their performance, they noticed the entire town was cleared out. All there was left was a tumbleweed blowing in the wind.
“You suck!" it shouted.

“Now, I want you four to sit in here and think about what you've just done," Delta Dawn said as she threw them all in a jail cell. “That was a crime against music!"
“We're sowwy," Flower said quietly.
“Wait, no!" Poppy insisted. “We're here to warn you about Barb, the Queen of Rock!"
“Sweetie, I already know and have heard about this Queen Barb and her fancy World Tour," Delta Dawn assured the Pop queen with a scowl on her face. “Now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta go wash what you call ‘music' out of my ears."
Poppy's face fell as Delta Dawn walked away. Her young niece, Clampers Buttonwillow, stuck her head out from her hair and laughed at the Pop Trolls.
“You in real trouble now! Right, Aunt Delta?"
“Keep an eye on 'em, Growly Pete!" Delta Dawn order him, who growled as he sat by the cell door, reading a newspaper.
“No, no! Music should bring us together, not divide us!" Poppy insisted, but no one was listening to her. “Sh... Sugar!"
Branch just sighed. “Well, I knew it. ‘Who Let The Dogs Out.' Too far."
“Okay, Branch," Poppy admitted as she sat on a cot. “You can say ‘I told you so.' I know you want to."
She was right, he wanted to, but he didn't. That was the last thing Poppy needed to hear right now, what kind of friend would that make him?
Instead, he sat next to her and softly said, “Y-You did great out there Poppy."
Flower watched as her parents smiled at each other. Now was the perfect time for Daddy to tell Mommy he loved her... only for Biggie to break the cot above theirs and land in between them, much to Branch's annoyance.
“I'll never survive the big house!" Biggie cried out. “We've got to get out of here!"
“I know," Poppy agreed. “That was such a rad medley! I can't believe it didn't work."
“Tell me about it," Biggie said. “I did the splits, no one even clapped! Am I not cute anymore?! Come on!"
Branch just rolled his eyes.
“Maybe my dad was right," Poppy figured. “The other Trolls are different in ways I was not prepared for. Some Trolls, they don't just want to have fun!"
“To each they owns," Flower said in agreement.
“Anybody got a plan B?" Biggie whispered as he made Mr. Dinkles' mouth move.
“Plan B? Right up here!" Branch replied confidently, pointing to the top of his head. He pulled out a travel from his hair and opened it up. “Step one: escape from Lonesome Flats."
As Branch began digging their way out, Flower and Biggie joined in to help. Biggie used Mr. Dinkles' mouth to pick out the fluffy sand and Flower just used her bare hands.
“Plan B it is," Poppy sighed in defeat. “I guess we're going home."
Suddenly, Poppy heard a voice shout out “Whoo-hey!" Someone lassoed the door, pulled it down, and Poppy fell flat on her back! In front of her was a handsome Country Troll with chartreuse skin, broad shoulders, orange hair and sideburns, and a bright red tail. He wore a ten-gallon hat and held a piece of straw with his teeth.
“It ain't right to put you in jail 'cause your music's different," he said smoothly as Poppy smiled up at him. “It seems some folks round here don't appreciate a rad medley when they hear one. Let's skedaddle."
“Yes! Mission back on!" Poppy cheered. “Branch! Branch! You can stop rescuing us!"
The others climbed out of the hole curiously as Poppy climbed onto the Country Troll's back.
“Poppy, you don't even know who this is!" Branch pointed out.
Poppy knew how to handle that. “I'm Queen Poppy. What's your name?"
“Name's Hickory," he answered.
“Branch, this is Hickory. Hickory, this is Branch."
“Enough with the formalities, let's go!" Biggie shouted. “Uh, this is Mr. Dinkles, by the way."
Mr. Dinkles just mewed.
“Bye, Gwowly Pete!" Flower said, causing him to wake up.
“Growly, growl... Huh?!"
At that moment, Delta Dawn and her fellow Country Trolls stormed out and saw them escaping.
“I said let's skedaddle! Hyah!" Hickory shouted, pulling the door with the rope as Biggie sat on it. Branch and Flower hesitated to follow, though.
“Go get 'em, Clampers!" Delta Dawn yelled, pulling her niece out of her hair. Chomping her teeth rapidly, little Clampers ran after them.
“Daddy, wun!" Flower cried, running after the others. Branch noticed Clampers and followed, scooping Flower up in his arms along the way.
“This was my plan C, by the way!" he screamed, climbing onto the door with Biggie.
“Charge!" Delta Dawn shouted as she and her posse ran after Hickory and the Pop Trolls out of town. Poppy noticed that they were headed straight for a cactus field!
“Oh, no! Hickory!" she warned.
“I got it, Queen Poppy!" he assured her, and ran through the field, evading the giant cacti.
It didn't stop Clampers, who just ran right through all of them! Hickory was fast, but she was faster.
Then, Hickory had an idea! He took a sharp turn, headed for a mine and easily jumped above the massive hole, while Clampers just fell in.
“Come on, Growly Pete!" Delta Dawn shouted to her partner. “Do your thing!"
“No one can escape my mustache!" he growled, and grabbed Branch's foot with it, causing him to slip.
“That tickles!" he laughed, nearly losing his grip.
“Branch, hold on to Mr. Dinkles!" Biggie shouted as Branch grabbed the worm. Mr. Dinkles strained as his whole body was being stretched by the two Trolls pulling on each end.
Suddenly, Flower noticed Clampers pop out of the ground and jump into the air, ready to attack!
“Wook out!" she warned, but it was too late. Clampers had bitten Branch in the rear and began chewing on his thigh like a beaver to a tree.
“Hickory, look out!" Poppy warned as they headed for a canyon, holding on to his hat for dear life. “We're not gonna make it!"
“Oh, yes, we are!" Branch said, getting an idea. He yanked Clampers off his leg, Delta Dawn came closer, and just when she thought she had him, Branch used Clampers' teeth to trim Growly Pete's moustache, freeing him! The Country Trolls could only watch as the escapees were sent flying over the canyon!
“Well, I hope Pop Trolls can swim," Hickory said right before they fell hundreds of feet into the river below.
“Oh, for Pete's sake!" Clampers groaned as she crawled back into Delta Dawn's hair, who was just as furious.
“Well, dangity-doodly!"
And thus, we meet one of the most... interesting characters in the Trolls franchise.
Feedback is appreciated. Until next time. 🤘
