The Headless Horseman of Broadway
The Caterbus rolled through the streets of New York City. Inside, Poppy and the Snack Pack are preparing some clothes to wear in their suitcases. They are invited to play in a Broadway theatre, where a musical production is going to be set. The director of the new musical called them to be guests of honor for the premier of the new musical. Rose was singing a song with Cooper, who is rapping with her. They stopped when Guy Diamond gasped when they finally arrived.
"Oh Glitter!!! New York City!!!" Guy Diamond cried.
"We're here in the Big Apple!" Poppy gasped. "It was an honor to be there."
"And that's not all, we're invited by my uncle to watch his new musical production." Biggie added.
"Yeah, I remember him, he's the one who added me to the theatre club." Branch said. "We all know him from his days as a teacher."
"We made costumes for his theatre club." Satin responded. "And all of us partake in all our school productions."
"I didn't know you guys work in your school's productions." Rose said. "The only thing I know about Broadway is from research and watching the video of the Broadway production of Cats."
"Now, you're gonna see Broadway in action when we get there." Poppy assured her as the bus drove to the streets of Broadway. There, a blonde man was waiting for them by the theatre door.
"Uncle Harold!" Biggie cried.
"Barley, you're finally here." His uncle beamed as Biggie ran outside the Caterbus and they both hugged. "And I am so happy to see you all again!"
"It's so nice to see you again, sir." Poppy said before showing Rose to him. "Mr. Williams, I'd like to introduce you to Rose, our new lead singer."
"Hi Mr. Williams, it's a pleasure to meet you." Rose said, shaking his hand. "And congratulations on the musical production."
"It's not yet ready for showtime, Ms. Rose, it will happen tomorrow night." Mr. Williams said. "I'll tell you kids about it while we go to my home in Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown?"
"Sure." Poppy agreed as they let him enter the Caterbus and drove off to Tarrytown.
Through their travel, they prepared the clothes they will use during their stay in New York and their equipment until they have finally arrived in Mr. Williams's home. During lunch, they told Mr. Williams and Biggie's cousin, Pat about the May Day Festival's Talent Show, and their job as a live band for hire but they also told him their ghost-hunting adventures too.
"My musical production is not yet ready for show because we got hauntings in the theatre by the Headless Horseman." Mr. Williams told them.
"The-the-the-the Headless Horseman?!" Biggie and Cooper shivered.
"Same old Barley." Pat rolled his eyes.
"Holy Guacamole! The Headless Horseman? I thought he couldn't cross the Headless Horseman bridge?" Branch asked.
"The Headless Horseman?" Rose was curious. "Who is that?"
"The Headless Horseman is the headless specter of a Hessian mercenary from the American Revolutionary War who rides a black steed." Pat Williams answered. "He was mentioned in the story, Legend of the Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving."
"I remember reading about that, his ghost haunted Ichabod Crane and spirited him away." Poppy said.
"Now, rumors about the Headless Horseman have spread like wildfire when his haunted sightings have expanded to Broadway." Pat added.
"It might ruin the reputation of my production if he shows up." Mr. Williams sobbed.
"Well, you got the right team for the job." Poppy said. "We can check the theatre where it will be shown so that we can start solving it right away."
That afternoon, they took the car to Broadway Theatre, which surprised the Snack Pack. They enter the theatre to check it out.
"Wow, the theatre is so huge." Poppy beamed.
"I read that Broadway Theatre is the only theatre in Broadway itself." Branch read on his iPad. "There are 41 Broadway theatres in New York but this one is the real deal."
"The Broadway Theatre, as in the Broadway Theatre?" Rose gasped. "Now this is a surprise."
"My production, the Hauntings of Sleepy Hollow will be played here. It will be a success with you helping the musicians play the necessary scores I composed and helping me with the preparations." Mr. Williams said. "I really believe you can help them play the scores properly."
"No problem." Poppy nodded.
As they entered the theatre, the performers, the musicians, and everybody participating in the production, appeared from the seats for their rehearsals when Mr. Williams and Pat arrived with the Snack Pack.
"Everybody, I'd like you all to meet the Snack Pack, they'll help us with the music." Pat introduced them to the cast.
Everybody gathered to say hello and greet them. A shy, meek girl with blonde hair appeared from the curtain and stepped down the stage to join in. She is wearing a short strapless dress, where the top is sparkly with two metallic strands around the torso area, and a skirt that's flowy and exhibits a pattern that looks like the skyscrapers of a city at dawn, with pastel blue and purple hues. She wore matching booties, purple sunglasses, and her hair is pulled back in two high ponytails that flow down to her shoulders.
"Kids, this is Luna Van Tassel and Jason Crane, our lead actors." Mr. Williams introduced her.
"Hi." She said in a meek voice. "It's nice to meet you all."
"It's so nice to meet you, Luna." Poppy said.
"How did you guys get your roles?" Branch asked.
"We got in because of our audition video we sent to Mr. Williams." Jason Crane said.
"So, who's gonna be the headless horseman?" Rose asked Mr. Williams.
"He's just gonna be a hologram onstage to make him look like a real ghost." He answered.
"This is gonna be exciting, we couldn't wait to perform onstage when the production is ready." Luna added with a shy tone.
"Hey!! Don't forget us!" Three girls yelled rudely. They pushed some of the cast members out of the way with a sneer on their faces.
A teenage girl with chest-length wavy brown auburn hair, vivid sapphire blue eyes and fair skin. She wears a long-sleeved red button-up mini dress of black buttons on the bodice, a Peter Pan white collar, a black broad band around the waist, and white fold-up cuffs with lace lining, white long leggings and black patent leather Mary Jane shoes.
The second girl has creamy-pale skin, wavy, chest-length dark chocolate brown hair and light cornflower blue eyes. She wears a gray long-sleeved mink coat, a shimmery light pink button-up knee-length dress with a light pink leather belt around her waist, white tights with tiny pink dots, black double strap Mary Jane shoes, and a light pink purse with a light pink strap over her left shoulder. The flanks of her hair is pulled back into a back in a half ponytail, with the end of it styled with shoulder-length soft, heavy ringlets.
The third girl has fair skin, straight shoulder-length blonde hair with straight bangs held in place by a fuchsia headband and deep sky blue eyes. She wears a baby pink and white ballet tutu and white tights, with peach leather point shoes with diamonds and peach santon laces wrapped around her ankles. She has a fuchsia ballet sweater that she wears over her tutu, and a diamond necklace. She also wears white gloves and a pink mink coat.
"Hold your wings! Who are these girls?" Rose asked.
"Yeah, this is the Veruca Salt Bunch, they got in because of their audition tape that they submitted to me." Mr. Williams said.
"Well, I'm Veruca Salt, this is Julia a.k.a Winter Veruca, and Ellie a.k.a Pink Veruca." The auburn haired girl introduced herself and her team. "We are also in the musical but Luna got the lead role instead of any of us."
"In every show, there is only one lead role." Rose reminded them.
"But you get to be in the show with your own songs." Poppy told them.
"Yeah, but we wanted more, especially the spotlight." Pink Veruca complained as the three left to practice on their own.
"Oh my Guh! How rude." Smidge sneered.
"What a team of spoiled brats." Rose spat.
"Looks like we got our first three suspects." Branch added.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah!!!" A raspy voice growled. It was an older man, wearing a cleaner's outfit and he was pushing a cart of cleaning tools. "They have tested my patience too much!!"
As the old custodian left, the Snack Pack looked at him with suspicion.
"A fourth suspect." Poppy added.
"But we haven't got suspects before in some of our mysteries." Branch said.
"Trish and her aunt Trish were already our first list of suspects." Poppy blurted out.
"Let's just practice." Rose suggested.
Everybody practiced for the whole day. The singers and performers practice all day while the musicians get help from the Snack Pack with the notes. At the same time, the Snack Pack practiced their song in secret. It went on until dinner came and everybody left for home. They are unaware of a pair of glowy eyes looking at them. The next day, they practiced again but instead of going out for lunch, the Snack Pack looked around the place for clues and they noticed a portrait of a red haired lady among the other paintings.
"Wow, that lady is a gorgeous actress." Rose gasped.
"Rosalyn Van Brunt." Branch read. "Let's continue looking around for clues."
Sure enough, they continued looking for clues until Poppy looked at the floor and picked up a picture of the headless horseman, drawn on a piece of paper.
"Pedra Preciosa! It's the drawing of the headless horseman." Poppy was shocked.
"Everybody loves to draw the headless horseman." Branch rolled his eyes.
"But this one looks like a costume design." Poppy retorted.
"Strange, Mr. Williams said he'd have a hologram of the Headless Horseman in his show but someone wanted a costumed actor instead for that role." Rose said.
While they look around for clues, Cooper and Biggie are checking out the posters in the hall.
"Wow, these shows are a hit around here!" Cooper squealed.
"Yeah, and Mr. Dinkles sure loves it too." Biggie added as he let his dog poke out his head to look at the photos.
The two didn't know that the Headless Horseman was snooping around with his pumpkin head and watched them with every move from the shadows.
"Biggie, have you noticed we've been watched by someone?" Cooper asked.
"Yeah?!" Biggie shivered.
They turned around and saw the Headless Horseman behind Poppy.
"G-g-g-g-g-g-ghosts!" The two tried to warn her.
"Yeah, we are solving the mystery of the Headless Horseman." Poppy said.
"No! Behind YOU!!" They cried.
Poppy turned around and she finally saw the Headless Horseman behind them. A chase ensues in the theatre as the Snack Pack would try to outwit the pursuing ghost until they finally lost them when they caught up with Mr. Williams.
"Mr. Williams, you were right, the Headless Horseman is haunting this place!!!" Biggie cried.
"We saw them right with our eyes!" Cooper added.
"You were right, I saw them too." Mr. Williams said. "When Pat and I are having the auditions for the production, the Headless Horseman spooked us too."
"We saw it too, it scared most of the people who auditioned for the production." Jason Crane added.
"We found this drawing of the Headless Horseman in the theatre." Poppy said.
"You said you wanted a holographic projection of the Headless Horseman but we found a costume design of it" Rose butt in.
"Yes, I planned to use a projection of the ghost but someone wants an actor to play the role of the Headless Horseman." Mr. Williams answered.
"I remember who wants an actor to play as the ghost, Evelynn Brunt." Luna said, remembering her. "She suggested it but he refused the offer so she quit the production and was never seen again. Some say she disappeared after that."
"Don't worry, we'll return her alive and well but we will also solve the mystery, you guys can help out too." Poppy suggested.
"Okay, let's split up for some clues." Branch said. "Cooper, Biggie, and Mr. Dinkles, you go to the basement, Rose, Poppy, and I will check the dressing rooms, Smidge, you, Guy Diamond, and Fuzzbert will check backstage while the twins can investigate the costume room."
"Great!!" Biggie and Cooper moaned.
But instead of going to the basement, the two sneaked into the rehearsal room and started goofing around in the place, dancing, singing and having fun until the Headless Horseman appeared behind them.
"CRIPES!!!" They cried as they ran out of the room with the Headless Horseman pursuing them. The two with Mr. Dinkles continued to get away and they used tactics to evade the ghost, from a food fight, locking the Headless Horseman in a closet to pretend to be dancers and trick him. The chase continued until they bumped into the rest of the gang at the stage, behind the curtain.
"Guys, we have a problem, the ghost is still haunting the place!" Cooper complained.
"We know, we are also trying to solve the mystery too." Poppy said.
"Pat is still with the cast but he told me that the Veruca Salt Bunch disappeared when it haunted us." Mr. Williams added.
"Well, we have two mysteries to solve, the hauntings and the kidnappings." Branch groaned. "What else?"
Suddenly, the ghost appeared out of nowhere and chased them too. They are able to get away from being chased until they busted into a locked room. Inside, they found some tools and other items in the room. There are items related to the Headless Horseman: a glowing pumpkin blueprint, a sewing machine, glow-in-the-dark paint, and blueprints of a robotic horse.
"WHOA!!! What a lot of junk!" DJ Suki groaned as she examined all the scrap metal on the ground.
"These are just some items used for the Headless Horseman costume but we need more evidence." Branch called out as he started looking around for clues. He touched something on the wall, revealing a book about the Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
"It's a copy of the story!!" Poppy was shocked as she picked up the book and read it. A piece of paper was seen between the pages. She pulled it out and read it.
"Dear Mr. Williams,
I was planning to quit, not because of your choices but the real reason was something else. Someone is after me.........."
"Mr. Williams, I couldn't believe that our missing person is a victim, not a suspect." Poppy said.
"Wow, I didn't know Evelynn was being haunted by the ghost herself." He gasped.
"And that's not all, I found this diary that belongs to Evelynn but there are a lot of photos of her with some girl resembling her, only slimmer." Rose added.
Suddenly, a sound was heard nearby. Mr. Williams tracked it into a closet, opened it, revealing the Veruca Salt Bunch, and a plump red haired woman, tied and gagged together. The Snack Pack, Jason Crane, and Luna Van Tassel set them free by untying them.
"Evelynn, what happened to you?" Mr. Williams asked her after she was freed.
"It was horrible, she caught up with me!" Evelynn cried.
"Who caught up with you?" Poppy asked.
"Some femme fatale kidnapped us from our hotel room. She gagged us and stuffed us in the closet with this old hag!" Veruca complained before the three left.
"A femme fatale?" Rose wondered.
"It was my rival, I mean someone I used to know." Evelynn complained. "If she sees me again, she will try to destroy my life."
"Don't worry, we will catch that ghost in the act before we know it." Branch smirked.
"Wait, tonight will be the show itself." Rose retorted as she dragged a giant bag of sand with a long string.
"Rose, where did you get that bag of sand?" Branch asked her.
"We can have the show as a lure and I will build a trap to catch the ghost." He said.
"At least we are not bait." Cooper sighed in relief.
That night, the musical is set and they are ready to catch the ghost in the act. During the performance, the Snack Pack, now dressed in stylish Gyaru outfits with sparkling beads, are already set with the trap while they wait for the HeadlessHorseman to appear. Suddenly, the Headless Horseman appeared in the middle of the act. Luna Van Tassel and Jason Crane are pretending to scream and panic as the Headless Horseman attacked the stage.
"Uno, dos tres!" Branch whispered before signalling the trap to be released. Cooper and Biggie cut the rope and a chain of contraptions were set, releasing a giant bag of sand that hit the Headless Horseman from behind, knocking it down onstage. The ghost rose up from the stage and tried to attack again but Cooper secretly used his telekinesis to make it float and get hit over and over. Then, Rose grabbed the bag of sand, swung it over her head like a hammer, and released it in midair until it hit the Headless Horseman was knocked down unconscious. The crowd thought it was a part of the show and applauded.
While the crowd was applauding for Luna Van Tassel and Jason Crane, the Snack Pack went up to the police and the security with Mr. Williams, Evelynn and the tied up ghost.
"The Headless Horseman may be a myth but we'll see who this impostor is!" Branch said as Mr. Dinkles jumped out of the bag and bit off the coat, revealing a slim, red-haired woman. Evelynn rushed onstage and she was shocked to see who it was under the costume.
"Gina Van Brunt!" Evelynn cried.
"Wow, it all makes sense, the costume design of the headless horseman, the fake pumpkin, the blueprints, everything was stolen from Evelynn by her older sister, Gina." Branch said. "I noticed that the painting of a red-haired woman from the hall of portraits has the name, Rosalyn Van Brunt, and she has the same looks as Evelynn and Gina but Evelynn is plumper while Gina is slim like Rosalyn."
"We found out from the blueprints and all the designs in the walls have the same signature as Evelynn does." Poppy added. "Rose discovered from Evelynn's diary that Gina was a ruthless, failed actress who was kicked out from the same theatre where Evelynn was working. She resolved to sabotage Evelynn herself by kidnapping her but she also wanted to get revenge on the theatre that kicked her out for her cold and ruthlessness. She used Evelynn's Headless Horseman costume, painted it with glow-in-the-dark paint, and used a glowing pumpkin to scare everybody and ruin the musical that Mr. Williams is working on it."
"The real Headless Horseman cannot cross through the notable Headless Horseman bridge from Sleepy Hollow but Gina is living here the whole time," Rose said. "She is almost complete with her Headless Horseman costume but the horse is the only thing she is missing. That makes her a normal headless ghost, not the Headless Horseman."
"Well, it looks like jealousy got the best of you!" Smidge sneered. "And you're getting to perform behind bars."
"Ugh!!! Foiled by those rainbow misfits!" Gina cried as she was dragged away by the police and Mr. Dinkles continued to bark until Biggie picked him up.
"Oh, thank you for saving my musical." Mr. Williams thanked them.
"Aww, it was nothing." Poppy nodded. "We are just doing what is right for you because you're the one who helped us back in high school."
"Well, this night will be a night to remember." He said as they were called onstage. Fuzzbert immediately set up the drumset and handed out the instruments to the rest of the Snack Pack as they ran onstage and performed their song. Rose started singing with Cooper rapping and everybody started dancing and moving to the music that the rest of the Snack Pack were playing with their instruments.
Cooper:
Grew up in a town that is famous as a place for movie scenes
Noise is always loud, there are sirens all around and the streets are mean
If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere, that's what they say
Seeing my face in lights or my name in marquees found down on Broadway
Rose and Cooper:
Even if it ain't all it seems, I got a pocketful of dreams
Baby I'm from New York!
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothing you can't do
Now you're in New York!
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Hear it for New York, New York, New York!
Rose:
On the avenue, there ain't never a curfew, ladies work so hard
Such a melting pot, on the corner selling rock, people playing card
Hail a yellow cab, takes me down from Harlem to the Brooklyn Bridge
Someone sleeps tonight with a hunger far more than an empty fridge
Rose and Cooper:
I'mma make it by any means, I got a pocketful of dreams
Baby I'm from New York!
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothing you can't do
Now you're in New York!
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Hear it for New York, New York, New York!
Rose:
One hand in the air for the big city
Street lights, big dreams, all looking pretty
No place in the world that can compare
Put your lighters in the air, everybody say
Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
In New York!
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothing you can't do
Now you're in New York!
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Hear it from New York
Whew, another story is done. I got the inspiration where the Headless Horseman attacked Broadway Theatre because of both the legends and my love for musicals. The song belongs to Alicia Keys. Keep the mystery requests going because I can't wait to write them down and think of the plot for the Snack Pack to solve.
