Yubel
Name: Yubel
Species: Dual Monster Spirit
Gender: Genderless (Japanese); Female (English dub)
Franchise: Yu-Gi-Oh
Many individuals from the genre of "anime" can be described as being overly powerful. Some of which aren't even human, or are merely humanoid in stature. Many of these powerful anime characters are heroes, while others- frighteningly- are villains who seem impossible to take down. Some of those powerful villains, however, usually have a drive and cause attached to their pain... Few of which take in as pleasure. Cower before Yubel (picture above), Terror Incarnate!
Yubel is one of the many Dual Monster Spirits that appear throughout the popular anime/card game Yu-Gi-Oh. Yubel specifically appears in the second generation of the franchise, Yu-Gi-Oh GX. She was the main antagonist of the third season of GX before being redeemed and became an ally to Jaden, the main protagonist of GX, during the fourth season (note that the fourth season of GX wasn't dubbed and didn't air in the US). In the original Japanese release of the series, Yubel is considered genderless as their design featured male and female traits, but in the English dub she was made to be more female and was later redesigned with more female features. If you prefer to play it safe and call Yubel a "they", do as you please, but I'll personally refer to her as a female since I'm more familiar with her as such.
Yubel first appeared in the show as the being pulling Professor Viper's strings so that she could gain the "Dual Energy" she needed to regenerate her body. You see, she had previously fell from space from inside a satellite and she miraculously survived, but all but her left arm was destroyed. She made a deal with Viper that she could bring him his son if he helped her gain enough energy to reform her body, to which Viper agreed and he began work. However, Yubel's cruel and calculating mind manipulated the odds in her favor from the very beginning, as she manipulated Viper into believing that his son was still alive so he could agree to her deal, even though his son was already dead. And when Viper realized this truth, Yubel disposed of him as soon as she gained her Spirit Form (how Viper was killed differs between the Japanese and English versions drastically, so I'll avoid explaining them here).
Her plan was to then transport the entire Dual Academy, the setting for the majority of Yu-Gi-Oh GX, into an alternate dimension (yeah you heard that right she can legit do that!), at which point Jaden chased after her. Yubel hid away however and slowly drained more Dual Energy from the students of the Academy to gain her true form, turning everyone into "Dual Ghouls". She hid away and played with Jaden as she watched him become tortured by being abandoned and left behind. Jaden eventually broke down enough for the spirit of the Supreme King, whom which Jaden is the reincarnation of, to take over and go on a blind rampage to conquer the whole dimension. All going precisely as Yubel planned...
After the Supreme King remembered himself and what Yubel had sacrificed for him in his past life, Jaden gained back control and begun to prepare to face Yubel down, now knowing what Yubel had done before becoming this... this monster. By this point, Yubel had possessed many individuals and battled Jaden's allies and even "killed" one of them (the death was clear in the Japanese release, but in the English dub it was stated that Yubel "sent him to the stars" despite the strong implying of death), eventually gaining her true form. All the while showing off her masochistic nature and belief in her wake. Only once did she lose a battle, and that was only because one of Jaden's friends sacrificed himself, and lived (even though he was later defeated by Yubel off screen and "sent to the stars"), but Yubel's plans were still within her tolerance to handle. She also managed to gain control of the three Sacred Beasts, special almost God Card-like creatures that drain the life out of almost every Dual Monster when they are active (the only Dual Monster to have not been affected by this is Yubel herself, because she's THAT powerful).
She even managed to trick Jaden into playing the card Super Polymerization so she could steal it for her ultimate plan. Which was to unite all 12 dimensions and create a new world for just her and Jaden to be together in forever. Nothing would stop her in doing this. Her strategic mind had figured out everything. She even took advantage of Zane's heart condition in hopes of his heart taking him out before their dual was over.
Eventually Jaden reached Yubel and challenged her to the final dual that would determine the fate of the world. Jaden tapped into his powers as the Supreme King and the Gentle Darkness, knowing that these powers would be the only thing to stand a chance against Yubel, and yet, with her strategic mind, she still remained one step ahead. Things were made worse with Yubel's special ability as a Dual Monster: to basically hurt the opponent's life points directly if they attack Yubel, all while Yubel herself wasn't damaged. While Jaden did everything he could to dely the usage of Super Polymerization, he couldn't prevent Yubel from summoning her monstrous forms of Terroe Incarnate and Ultimate Nightmare. Eventually she finally got her chance to use Super Polymerization and fuse the dimensions forever!
But not before Jaden activated the effects of two spell cards, and the combined effect of these spell cards would allow Jaden to choose what Super Polymerization would fuse together! What a close one! And the things Jaden wanted to fuse? His and Yubel's souls, so that Yubel's soul and the Supreme King would be together while healing Yubel's insanity! Jaden then told Yubel that he understood why she did all these things, and that she was just trying to protect Jaden and her Supreme King as she did before, but she had lost her way due to the torture the Light of Destruction did to her. Yubel cried tears as Jaden stated that he wasn't sure just what would happen to him after the fusion, but as long as Yubel was healed, he didn't care. Jaden passed out just before the fusion, and Yubel caught him and held him as she stated that their souls would indeed fuse and that when the time would come, both her and the Supreme King would rise again to save the world. The fusion reversed most of the damage Yubel had caused and returned the Dual Academy to its proper place. And fortunately for everyone, Jaden's outside appearance hadn't changed a bit, nor did his personality. However, as everyone would come to know, Yubel's soul lived on in Jaden, assisting him in duals similar to how Yugi and Pharaoh did with each other.
Though the fourth season of GX wasn't dubbed, we know it revolved around Jaden trying to relax after the events of Yubel's arc, all while having to deal with the return of a previous enemy known as Nightshroud, whom can basically be described as the Majora's Mask of Yu-Gi-Oh GX. Yubel's soul would assist Jaden and cheer him on unless Jaden used her Dual Monster card in battle, such as when he had to send her to the graveyard to make his ace monster Neos strong enough to fight his current opponent. Yubel told Jaden that he could go ahead and send her to the graveyard, and though that meant he would be going the rest of the dual alone, she had confidence in his skills and abilities as a dualist. Also, during Jaden's dual with Yugi himself, Yubel pointed out Jaden's hand shaking and asked if he was afraid. However, Yubel immediately stated that Jaden couldn't be afraid since she knew him better then anyone and that she knew he wasn't afraid of losing to Yugi.
Yubel's entire reasoning behind her cruel deeds can be traced all the way back to the Supreme King's past life. Yubel was once a beautiful human individual whom the Supreme King, who was a child prince at this point, was close friends with. The Supreme King's father, the king, explained to Yubel that the young prince had powers tied to the Gentle Darkness. The belief in this kingdom, see, was that when light came into being, the darkness remained and shielded all life from the scorching light so that all life could thrive. However, the Light of Destruction was determined to one day return in physical form and destroy the Gentle Darkness. That was the Supreme King's destiny; to fight the Light of Destruction and save the world. However, the prine needed a guardian of extraordinary power to protect him until he was old enough to control his powers. Finding a guardian for the prince required a volunteer to essentially lose their humanity and become a beast that couldn't be harmed, and without a second thought, Yubel volunteered. The king was shocked at this and pleaded her to reconsider, for she would lose her beauty and become "a dragon with scales so rough they couldn't feel pain", but again Yubel insisted. As long as she could do her part to protect her friend, that's all that mattered to her.
We get a glimpse of the process that Yubel underwent to become the fiend she is today, and it could best be described as "alchemic surgery". Naturally we don't see any blood nor do we see Yubel physically change from human to monster, but what we do see is Yubel screaming in pain yet she didn't tell the individuals performing this change to stop. During this vision the Supreme King was remembering after taking over Jaden's body, he saw his young prince self dash into the room and look on in horror atwhat his friend had agreed to and he ran to Yubel's side to try and make them her reconsider. The next vision shows Yubel in her current monstrous body, vowing to her friend the prince that she would do all she could to protect him for all their days. In the original Japanese release, the prince vowed to always keep their love for one another in his heart, while in the English dub he vows to always remember Yubel's sacrifice and their friendship.
After a lifetime passed, Yubel's soul was made into a Dual Monster card and was given to Jaden whom was a child at this time. Yubel immediately recognized Jaden as the reincarnation of the Supreme King and vowed to resume her duty of protecting him. Unfortunately, this was taken to an extreme when Yubel also "protected" Jaden from anything that would get between their friendship. She went as far as sending everyone who lost to Jaden in a dual into a coma just to "protect" Jaden. Jaden's family decided to send Yubel, along with Jaden's Neo-Spacians Dual Monsters, into a space capsule to allow them to gain new powers as well as hopefully healing whatever was troubling Yubel's soul. However, the Light of Destruction took Yubel's space capsule and preceded to torture her. Yubel tried to call for help via Jaden's dreams, but Jaden only received horrible nightmares of Yubel's torture, which lead to Jaden's parents erasing Jaden's memories of Yubel. After five years of torture, Yubel drew more insane under the Light of Destruction's influence and decided that this was simply Jaden's way of showing his love for her, since love requires two to go through pain as well as joy. Thus began Yubel's masochistic belief and her planning sweet revenge on Jaden.
Yubel is one of those characters who seemed to reveal new powers as the plot demanded. For example, she was shown to be able to use telekinesis, teleportation of objects, people, places, and herself, and throwing fire balls just on a whim. She is also capable of flight, regeneration, energy absorption, possession, and even duplicating herself whenever she used her own Dual Monster card (she is the first Dual Monster dualist to have done this, for every other Dual Monster that dualed the GX characters put themselves in battle). Also, her Dual Disk was actually an extension of her left arm, which is a frightening thought and sight.
Yubel's design as seen in GX can best be described as a representation of duality. Half of her was male and the other half female. One of her eyes was green while the other was orange. Half of her hair was white while the other half was blue-ish colored. Her left foot having sharp claws at the end of her toes, while the right is single toed with a large yellow spike extending from it. Her split hair color specifically references both Marrik and Bakura, antagonists from the original generation of Yu-Gi-Oh. This is even more evident during the final moments of her dual with Jaden, as she fused with her Ultimate Nightmare self and veins seemed to bulge out on her face, just as Yami Marrik had done with the Winged Dragon of Ra before. However, in the English dub, the male half of her was covered in black to better hide that part of her duality, and in the 2014 movie Yu-Gi-Oh: Bonds Beyond Time, Yubel was redesigned with both halves of her torso being female.
