When you ask any gamer about "indie games," 8/10 times they'll think about a horror indie game like Five Nights at Freddy's or Tattletail or Bendy and the Ink Machine. However, one new game in this genre has been giving the other games a run for their money, has lots going for it, and has had such a profound impact on those who watch it's gameplay, even more so for those who play it. The horror feels real, and the mystery surrounding it has only thickened with the DLC, and, by it's developers, it's not officially a horror genre game. It might fill the faint of heart with nightmares, however. Little Nightmares, that is. 😉
Meet Six (picture above), a little girl who has seen her fair share of trouble. Little Nightmares is based around her journey to survive and escape. It's one of a few games with no dialog whatsoever(for those who ain't been paying attention in English class, dialog is the conversation(s) between two or more characters in a story. Just think of most Legend of Zelda games and their reputation for no voice acting). So the details throughout the game were meant to be there for one reason or another, no stand-out details are pointless. Even the details that take some finding means something to the story. None of it is pointless.
Anyway, Six is the main protagonist of the main story of Little Nightmares. In the DLC, a boy named the Runaway Kid by the game's developers(nicknamed Seven by the fans, cause, you know, Six and Seven 💕😆) is the main protagonist, while we see a slight appearance of Six in the first DLC chapter. Six wears a large yellow raincoat-like clothing and her only tool throughout the whole game is her lighter (like a cigarette lighter). Who knows how Six ended up with that lighter, probably unwittingly stole it from the janitor or got it from that hanging man near the beginning of the game(yeah, you read right, a hanged man is in plain sight near the start of the game😕) She also has an unmatched talent for puzzle solving, even in a crisis. Six can climb and partcore around her surroundings. She's not perfect by any means, however.
Six becomes hungry in the worse of times. In Little Nightmares, Six gets hunger pains and will eat anything to live a little while longer. In the game, the first thing she eats is a piece of bread another child gives her. Next, a piece of meat in one of the janitor's traps. Then, a live rat. Then, a gnome who was offering a sausage(I hate to say this, but as revealed in the DLC, the Runaway Kid was turned into the very gnome that Six killed😢💔). Finally, after knocking the Geisha lady down, Six bit into her neck and absorbed the lady's dark magic(😨). She then presided to kill the guests and unlock the door to the outside, and as seen after the credits, Six sits beside the door, presumably waiting for help to come. When the player selects the exit button, a fog horn is heard, suggesting Six managed to actually escape via a passing boat.
Many a mystery still surrounds Little Nightmares, such as whether or not the lady is Six's mother, the gnomes possibly being children, and so on. In fact, the developers felt that since the fans somehow didn't see all the facts clearly, they created the DLC with the Runaway Kid(Seven) to help explain the story. They also developed a 4 issue comic book version of Little Nightmares, showing that there are in fact other children trying to survive. I'm warning you now, it's really weird, even for Little Nightmares. Two issues of this comic has been released, while the other two are still pending.
As you can imagine, Six herself has a lot of attention by fans and theorists and, well, anyone that has had the chance to play even a fraction of the game. The developers supposedly haven't confirmed Six's gender, yet everywhere you look, the developers have called Six a "her". In the official website the description of Six refers to Six being a girl. The developers have called Six a girl in their interviews, including the ones regarding Six's gender. When they had people dress up as the chefs, Six, and some Wax Bellman that supposedly never made it into the game(I say it like that because theories and pictures suggest otherwise, you know what I mean), the developers had a stunt woman act as Six. You get the idea, right?
There's more. During the hunger scenes Six has, if you look around the room and look hard enough, you might see what appears to be a dark version of Six watching from afar(Everyone calls it Dark Six or Evil Six, but I call it Shadow Six, so I'll refer to it as that). According to one YouTube video it's possible to see this Shadow Six in the main menu in place of Six, though whether or not it was fake is hard to say. Many people think Shadow Six is a representative of Six's growing dark powers. Some think it's the North Wind(In the comic it's revealed that this North Wind is the enemy of the Maw and hunts down children, doing lord knows what with them) watching Six.
The game itself has gained quite the reputation. Not only does Little Nightmares have a comic, DLC, and even official papertoys, but supposedly Little Nightmares is going to get a television show adaptation. You heard right, a flipping TV show. The best that fnaf has done was some novels and the rumor of a movie. Tattletail has DLC, but I think that just made things more confusing. Bendy got a crossover DLC with Hello Neighbor. Little Nightmares is going much further than any of that. If it's true, that means we'll got alot of explaining about what's going on in Six's little world.
Little Nightmares is also getting a Nintendo Switch release, along with a similar and predecessor of-sorts game called Inside, Undertale, and of course, The world ends with you, along with other games. The release of the Switch version is supposed to be sometime in 2018(the year this was written, so you know), along with the other previously mentioned games.
Recently it was revealed that the Little Nightmares franchise will be getting a new installment called Very Little Nightmares for iOS and Android. Not many details have been revealed as of yet, but what has been revealed has been enough to send fans running back to this game series. Six once again plays as the main character, giving the idea that is possibly a prequel to Little Nightmares. There is also already one new monster revealed to us, and it can be mistaken for the Janitor at first glance. The location of Very Little Nightmares is a place set high in the sky called The Nest.
