Reala

Name: Reala
Franchise: NiGHTS/ SEGA spin-off games
Gender: Your opinion
Species: Nightmaren

Reala(picture above) is Wiseman's general of his army of Nightmarens, creatures that mindlessly and blindly serve Wiseman to the death. Usually it's Wiseman that kills them actually, for not fulfilling his orders completely. Reala is also NiGHTS's brother, both being created to serve Wiseman, their "father" if you will. Reala is much the same as NiGHTS, though you can imagine that he claims to be stronger and that NiGHTS is his "sibling". Technically Reala, like NiGHTS, doesn't have a specific gender. It depends on how you see the Night Dimension, though you can imagine that pretty much everyone sees Reala as a male.

When Wiseman was creating more members of his army, he decided to create something different. All of his Nightmarens up to that point had little to no resemblance to a human, and had no intelligence, though Wiseman purposely intended for them to have no intelligence so they wouldn't revolt against him. He decided since he needed a general or two to command his ever growing army of circus freaks, he decided to let his newest creations to have intelligence and a more human looking body, while still maintaining the circus look, granting them more power then the others, and so forth. He created two special Nightmarens with these traits and named them NiGHTS and Reala. The only thing that wasn't so perfect about the two was that, since Wiseman granted them intelligence, he denied any sense of free will from them, claiming to destroy them should they try. Reala obeyed with no question out of fear of what Wiseman would do to him, but NiGHTS soon started feeling like a slave and wished to leave it behind, to see the world, to feel freely. Despite the danger, NiGHTS took courage and finally escaped from Wiseman, and even stole some of his Ideyas too. She became free, and though she would have to deal with Wiseman trying to capture her and punish her time and again, she was joyous of her success...

Minus the fact that her brother Reala was still trapped as Wiseman's general. Reala was still fearful of Wiseman, and felt betrayed by NiGHTS, thinking she purposely left him behind. Now he wishes to capture his brother(NiGHTS doesn't have a specific gender, it depends on how you see her,or him, or it. I discussed the matter further in my earlier chapter on NiGHTS) while trying to stay on Wiseman's good side, if he even has one...

In the first NiGHTS game, Reala only made one appearance in one boss fight. It wasn't known to many people outside of SEGA that Reala was NiGHTS's brother. To find out that information you had to have Internet, which not many people had back then, and know what website to go to, which wasn't very well known. The website revealing the fact that Reala was NiGHTS's brother was also in Japanese, which meant you needed to be able to actually read Japanese in order to figure out what it was saying at all. The only other way was to have some involvement in the NiGHTS game, that or wait till SEGA themselves revealed the information, which I have no idea if they ever did. It wasn't until NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, where Reala had more screen time and story development, that it was revealed globally that Reala and NiGHTS were brothers.

Reala's appearance in NiGHTS into Dreams was somewhat simple compared to his later design. Some believe this is the better design for those who enjoy nostalgia, but the newer gamers beg to differ. Reala didn't where a persona(a kind of magical mask) back then like he does now. He claims wearing his persona is a testament to his loyalty to Wiseman. His fingers were colored yellow, but now the newer version of him has a hand that's the same color as the rest of his skin, plus his nails are now colored pink. Not going to lie, I thought that was disappointing that they got rid of Reala's yellow fingers. It made them look like claws, but that's really my only complaint about the new design compared to the old one. The new design also sports an almost samurai look to Reala while still maintaining some circus looks.

In the first NiGHTS game, the Nightmarens had some mysterious language only they could understand. As Reala's intro before his only boss fight, he stood up on his feet and said something in Nightmaren language. For the longest time everyone who played the game thought Reala was saying something to the extent of ",There is no NiGHTS," but as it turns out, according to SEGA, Reala was just taunting NiGHTS, saying something to the extent of ",Come on, NiGHTS!" In NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, the Nightmaren language was never used or even mentioned.

Reala has made appearances outside of the NiGHTS games. In the Archie Comics version of NiGHTS into Dreams, Reala appeared alongside NiGHTS as a character in the story, though still against NiGHTS. In the Sonic/Megaman crossover comic series, where all of SEGA's and Capcom's games up to that point were included, Sigma wanted to rule the many worlds outside his own, so Tails developed the Genesis Portal to go to these different words and find more help to stop Sigma and his army. Though Sigma's army had come to Nightopia, both NiGHTS and Reala were able to stop them. When Tails asked NiGHTS if she would help and she agreed, she asked Reala to come with her, thinking it would be "fun." He originally refused, but then Wiseman via telepathy told him to go along and help NiGHTS so that Sigma wouldn't get in the way of his plans to take over Nightopia. The rest is history.

In case you're wondering, Reala is correctly pronounced Re-al-a. Similar to saying reality.
