"-Now I'm sure you've wondered where holidays come from. If you haven't, I'd say it's time that you begun."

If you tried to build a town based entirely on the holiday of Halloween, the Nightmare before Christmas has already beat you to it. Halloween Town, where the souls, bodies, and skeletons of people and animals end up in one form or another, is a place of the ever-constant celebration of, well, Halloween. Though the residents' manner of celebrating Halloween is somewhat horrid, they mean well and are actually quite nice people.

Most of them anyway.

One creature named the Oggie Boogie Man is jealous of Jack Skelington for being the Pumpkin King. He's also a gambler, and an unfair one at that. However, like many villainous tyrants like himself, he has henchmen to do most of the dirty work for him. Or should I say, hench children? Also known as Halloween's finest trick-or-treaters, Lock, Shock, and Barrel(picture above) are mischievous and loyal yet fearful of the Boogieman's power.

Lock, Shock, and Barrel are a representation of how mischievous and troublesome young children can be. They wear costumes and masks to fit the atmosphere of Halloween Town. The three of them all live in a large tree house just outside of Halloween Town and located just above Boogieman's lair. In fact, they often capture bugs that fall into their traps and throw them down a pipe that leads into Oggie's lair as an offering to him(seriously, in the movie while Lock is about to throw the bug down to Oggie, you can see Shock and Barrel kneeling, like they worship Oggie or something), and supposedly they get food from Oggie in return. Based off the song the three sing in the movie, Oggie rewards them with "snake and spider stew" for their more excellent services, which they seem to enjoy greatly. They will also take orders from Jack if he offers them to do something considered mischievous in nature, such as kidnapping Santa Claus, though they'll often turn around and go against Jack Skelington if it's in their and/or Oggie's interest. They have their own sorce of transportation in the form of a living walking bathtub, which they use to travel between Halloween Town, their tree house, and the woods. They also use it to carry large objects around between said places. In Kingdom Hearts(the first one I mean), before you fight Oggie in the Halloween Town world, you can get up the tree house via this living tub, which suggests it will let anyone ride it. This probably means that it doesn't have much of a brain.

Lock, Shock, and Barrel which are different to each other. Though they have their differences, they will get along for a good mischievous prank, especially if Oggie gives them the order to. Despite being loyal to Oggie, they also clearly fear him, as they have been seen to shake and hold each other while Oggie cackles about his plans to overthrow Jack Skelington. Their combined names of Lock, Shock, and Barrel is a pun off the phrase lock, stock, and barrel.

Lock- A six year old boy in a devil costume, which reflects what he is; a handsome devil. He is actually the leader of the three, though Shock often fights him for leadership and often is confused for being the leader. Judging from the lines he specifically sings in their song, he is supposedly the cruelest of the three. Specification has it that everyone in Halloween Town, Lock, Shock, and Barrel included, were once living people and animals before dying and being brought to the afterlife. Theory has it that Lock died by being frozen to death. Evidence of this is the fact that Lock's skin and lips are blue, which is what happens when you freeze. This is said to be the reason Lock dresses up as a devil, because he wishes to be someplace warmer. And where else is hotter then where the Devil lives?

Shock- A seven year old girl who dresses up as a witch, though she doesn't show any affiliation with the other witches in Halloween Town other then sharing the same looks. She is the oldest of the three, and she often tries to take leadership of the group from Lock. In fact, it wasn't till sometime after the release of the Nightmare before Christmas that it was revealed that Lock was actually the leader despite Shock's control over him and Barrel. She sees herself as smarter then Lock and Barrel, which is somewhat accurate considering Lock and Barrel are younger and visually less intelligent. Theory has it that Shock died after being accused of or being the daughter of someone who was accused of being a witch and burned for it, which is the punishment people gave to supposed witches back in the 1800s. This is why Shock dresses as a witch, and yet doesn't associate with the other witches in Halloween Town.

Barrel- a five year old boy who dresses as a skeleton, and is the runt of the litter. He is the youngest of the three, which subjects him to being called dumber then Lock and Shock sometimes. Though he's really the only one who would care about rather Lock is in charge or Shock. In the first Kingdom Hearts game after beating Oggie, if you talk to Barrel he'll say that he actually doesn't like trouble, but the only reason he hangs out with Lock and Shock is so he doesn't miss out on whatever is happening. Theory has it that Barrel died via drowning. Evidence of this is that Barrel's lips are blue, which is a sign that someone drowned after they die. It's also possible his body was never recovered and his body didn't decay like other people's bodies do outside of water. This could explain why he dresses up as a skeleton, because he wishes for a proper burial which he never got.

*😢 Poor Barrel. He's my favorite of the three you know. (Sniff) Man I fall for people with depressing backstories so hard.*
